I think crypto currencies is for us what Gold was for our parents and grand parents. The older generations needed something to touch and store at home or in a bank locker. Without a physical asset they wouldn't feel safe. Our generations don't really need that anymore, most of my friends if they invest into gold they just buy an ETF or commodity fund. There is no real demand for physically owning gold anymore. So if you just own it on paper than there is no real difference anymore between bitcoins or gold.
