I have tried taking breaks myself. It doesn't work and makes the mind restless. Gambling is like a drug. The moment you leave gambling, you become calm initially, and then slowly the temptation builds up. It grows to the point when you just can't stop yourself anymore. Intense self determination, and intense discipline can help. Because our brains have already adopted to use gambling as an escape option, hence, temporarily it might help to take a break. But to leave the habit completely, one needs to totally give up on gambling consciously.

I am sure it will difficult to take a break for the first time. But if you keep trying to break after playing gambling for some time, you will not feel difficult because you will feel that your mind needs to rest for a while. It needs to build new things to stop what we did before, especially if playing gambling. In those situations, you need to try more and more, and don't let your mind think about gambling because that can make you lose more money. You must have a strong will to leave the habit, and don't let gambling posses you. Otherwise, you will become a heavy addicted to gambling without having a chance to stop playing gambling.

I was once an addicted gambler. It happened few years ago, I cant control myself when im playing. It all started when I play dice because I heard that my friend managed to triple his money through it. Unfortunately im not lucky just like him and lose. From then, I often try to recover what I lost, end me up to a worst situation. Though I overcome those moment its a lesson learned to not enter into something you're not aware of, about the possible consequences. Gambling is addicting but it depends on the gambler itself, if you have control and discipline then you wont end up as an addicted gambler.

It is not just gambling habit that we should pay attention on there are other things that is also addictive that we should consider being cautious.
All things are addictive it only depends on us if we would be addictive to it and something excessive is bad for us and could affect our health.
But I agree that gambling addiction is one of the most common addiction and one of the greatest reason why many people are being ruined not just their own but also their family.
This is the saddest part when family member become addicted to the gambling their family is affected too . Many family broke because of a person addicting playing gambling.Addicting is our choice if we want to stop it we can as long as you are committed to your promises but if it's lie for sure after few days a person will go back again to their bad habit and that not is not good to see.
But it is not easy to be addicted, sometimes it is our decision but sometimes it is also because we are being lured and not expected.
Family really suffers because they are are the one who's being disturbed from our addicted family member.
i remember a friend who is a good person but when he got hooked in gambling?he has changed and we cannot understand him already.
Now he has changed but it is a hardest part since we did not leave him and supported him all the way of His changing lifestyle.

That's sad to hear, but also a good lesson for new gamblers. It's good you manage to break the addiction yourself. I would assume you never played dice again, or are you still gambling? I read in an article that people suffering from a gambling addiction can relapse very easily. It's similar to an alcohol addiction where one drink can send you back into a downward spiral again. You must be careful with your condition.

<...>

I disagree about this.

We know everything we decide, and of course we know what we should expect when we play gambling always, and that's is to the road of addiction, either you're winning or losing. Being addicted on it is easy, but quitting your addiction and losing money because of it makes it hard for someone to decide what he should really do because if he quits, then all of the money he had lost would be ought for nothing, but if he doesn't quit, he'll lost even more money.

And that's where mostly the part addicted gamblers are stuck at, they can't move since they are always torn on what to do to end their misery.

Being addictive is different from being discipline. People that are addict find it difficult to break away from such habit that they are addictive to. Maybe you just wanted to try luck with yourself after you see your friend tripled his money. Well maybe you are lucky to go out easily.

Not everyone is lucky enough to be successful in gambling, it's pretty risky specially if you are new into it.
Do not dive on gambling and bet high amounts if you are a beginner, just familiarize your self first.
Eventually you will get how the game works, and it could give you some nice predictions that you can use for betting basis.
Experience will be a good source of knowledge in gambling, before you decide to went through, think it about it multiple times.
Lossing is frustrating, that's why you have to establish yourself first, ready to accept whatever happens.

That's really the common struggles or reason why gamblers are getting addicted, it's because they are stuck with their losses and can't accept it. Giving their own selves a false hope thinking that by gambling, even more, they can earn back the money they lost which is not really happening in most cases. The more gamblers think/aim of getting back all of their losses, it becomes harder for them to accept it that leads to addiction.

It depends on the nature they have and of course also depends on the determination to quit, because for me a gambling addict will never 100% succeed in leaving gambling even though his addiction has been treated or has been overcome. A gambler will at least come back to gambling but with a maybe better control, this I have witnessed and experienced myself, so I say every gambling addict has a different personality but they will not really be able to leave gambling because we still it is easy to gamble anywhere.

There are things that you can do to prevent falling into spiral with gambling in the first place.  The hardest one that I can think of is self-awareness, what I mean by that is fully acknowledging yourself, even the bad traits you have should be acknowledge because the longer you deny it, it will become a pent up emotion that will burst out of proportions. If you think that you can get obsessed with things then you can prevent yourself from falling out. This is just one of the measures that can help you prevent being introduced to gambling, like a cliche, prevention is better than cure.

So true.

With yourself on the check, I don't think we should even think about being addicted. I think the best way for you not to be addicted to gambling is if you could control yourself. You could be aware of where you are falling but sometimes, there are people that couldn't control their urge to gamble that is why they still fall addicted to gambling. If you are in control, you don't have any problem.
While this is the easiest method to avoid becoming addicted to gambling at the same time it is the hardest, most people have the tendency to see everything they do in a bright light and as such even if they are gambling way too much they still think they are in control when for people on the outside they are clearly not in control, this will not be a problem if they listened to the advice of their friends and family but for the most part people also have the tendency to overvalue their own opinions which means that most likely they will not listen and by the time they realize their mistake it is too late to do anything about it.

Moreover when your loss has reached the highest ever and you can't afford to cover it all , that is the moment you might losing hope to even continue your worthless life , it happens quite often and that kind situation required a special attention from your closest colleagues.

You can't beat the gambling addiction by just stay away for a while. At some point you could make a comeback and get in to the old cycle, a never ending cycle.

So I've said to him that he needs full self dedication in quitting gambling and alcohol since it is both bad for him and for his family, but I guess once you got addicted to it, there's nothing that can change your mind.

What they need is real rehabilitation, in a center, in where they would treat it seriously and be taken care of by a professional.

I can't imagine how his life with his gambling and alcohol addiction will be too difficult to handle. First, he needs to have money to continue playing gambling, and secondly, he needs more money to buy the drink. He really needs guidance and help from other people to cure both addictions. Perhaps, his family must take seriously beside him, and always remind him or ask him to do something else.

I am not sure if he wants to go that real rehabilitation because he will reject and say that he is okay, and he can control both of his addiction. I hope that his family can take care of him and not let him make trouble with his addiction.

Addicting is not good because it might destroy your life or even your relationship to your family as well also. There is a lot of people who broke their family because they are addicting playing gambling after spending all their money and lost it all maybe an addicted player will do bad things for them to have money they can be able to play a gambling and that is reality there is a lot of cases happened that. Controlling is one of the best you can if you do not want to become addicted because it's help yourself to not do a wrong things just like the others did for money for the things they want.

There are a lot of gambler too hard to quit on gambling in different reason.
1. This is the source of their income
2. They spent a lot of money and too hard to quit
3. This is part of their daily habit

Some of the people  affected on being gambling addicted
1. Family
2. Friends
3. Work

On my opinion and experience too hard too quit gambling if you want to earn more and loss a lot.

Limiting ourself to something really addictive is indeed a tough task. I know quitting gambling can be really hard but it isn't impossible.
Trust me, meditation can really help here since it improves our control over our mind and body. We need to control our mind from gambling frequently.
Meditation has solved many problems in my life as it connects our mind and body and it will surely help you improving your self discipline.

Quitting any addiction is always hard but quitting an addiction that is behavioural in nature is even more difficult and the reason is that gambling is so available these days that it is impossible to limit your exposure to it unless you are 100% committed to stop gambling, after all thanks to online gambling now you can gamble from the comfort of your own home, so even if you somehow blocked all your accounts in the different casinos were you used to gamble a quick Internet search could be all that you need you fall back on the arms of gambling addiction.

Sad story, gambling addiction is a big problem for modern people. Some religions have a strong power of humans to prevent them from committing sin but this is never enough after tasting the sweet winnings. If the person can make the salary less than 1 week, automatically the psychology tempts him to repeat the same circle and get rid of hard work. This is the dangerous point before turning yourself a beast that can't beat without spinning a  slot or betting on horse/football matches. Professional support is essential to stop hurting yourself but the person should accept this before talking to a close circle.

What I noticed is that gambling was not like before, in the paste, there were no much computers and no phones, many people were not having access to gambling sites unlike now, people are using mobile phones and computers to access gamblimg sites now, that is why gambling is now accessible to many people. Like me, I can not gamble outside but I noticed I can pick up my phone and visit a gambling site and be betting, because of this, many people are now accessing gambling sites while gambling is addictive, that is why the issue of gambling addition is very important. Like me, I was ones addicted and lost money and properties, it depressed people and can lead to some people thinking of killing themselves like I ones did. People should be disciplined and never use the money they can not afford to lose to gamble.

How is your friend doing? Did his wife and son come back yet?

I didn't know the difference in English between gambling and betting: in my native language I think that there is no difference, only different "types of bets".

I hope your friend is doing good. Please, provide us some feedback when you have time.
