I mostly agree with your post there. But I believe such a question about why people gamble requires some historical context to fully understand where the desire to wager comes from.
The most important part is understanding that in the ancient times (before the last of chances and mathematics were fully developed), the habitants those civilizations believed ramdoness itself was the manifestation of the will of their gods and deities, to them it was not matter of chance, but rather a matter of religion and the will of a bigger force than them.
An equivalent for it would be seeing people of the Christian faith gambling, because they believe Jesus wants them to have money. (I know it would be a contradiction, though).

So the motivations for gambling have not always been the same through the history of humankind. Today, we all have standard motivations, which are very rotted in greed, but it has not always been like that.

He is not married so he has no responsibilities to his family. But he had debts and that was also used for gambling. His hard work is just for gambling. For them gambling is always bad, and addicted gambler is always a person dressed dirty or badly, a typical bum. While real addicted gambler is a well dressed Because that person must look presentable, otherwise it will be hard for him to get more and new money.
