How can two persons be so addicted to gambling that they'll go to such an extent? Apparently the mother is definitely not a good role model to the son. The son definitely needs a strong father figure which is what he lacks. I don't like the punishment or fine give  to them. It is not going to be in anyway effective. Their punishment could have been rehabilitation and community service.

Maybe, they have an internal problems at their home. And they thought that through gambling they can solve their problem and it will an answer to their other issues. But it happen that they become addicted and that's not good because not only the mother is addict it is also become her son. Their family went to a lot of course and they needed counseling as well.

People would not really fall into gambling addicts easily if there’s no wrong with the way they live. Maybe this mother and son have experienced struggling with their finances that’s why they took gambling chances hoping that it could answer to their financial problems. But they have gone too far with gambling and even blame someone for their misconduct. This is a very wrong attitude, and worst thing is this mother has greatly influenced her own son to act that way. I pity her son because he’s just a victim to his own mother’s wrong doing. Hopefully, they will receive proper counseling and that they should learned after all of this worst phase in their lives.

First, gambling is a personal choice, obviously for me, I would not blame anyone for the losses caused because of my gambling activity.

In the case stated by @OP, I do not think there is a chance for this mother and son to get away of fraud since they admit the fault at the end.  Honestly the news is somehow confusing.  The lack of details how the event happens and how these mother and child ended up pleading guilty.  This is another case of poorly written news report IMO.  There should be the initial state of the case, a short information of the development of the case, the turn of events or proof that lead how this mother and child ended up pleading guilty.  But there is none.

someone will sometimes lose their mind when they become a gambling addict and rather ignore whatever they hear. accusing other people or friends when they accept defeat at the casino, that's also very bad, while other people or our friends don't have any fault.
but the name of addiction does make people a little insane.

Actually, that kind of schemes to defraud money out the bank to avoid paying for the things one has already bought or consumed do not work, because people working on the bank have a set of electronic tools and software which they use to track the operations and the IP addresses where they were made from, it was matter of time before they got busted, because I assume they did not even bother to use Tor or even thought about the consequences of lying to a bank.  

Lying to Casinos, Banks, the government and your spouse is never a good idea, I guess.

I think they need to visit the psychiatric hospital to check if they are mentally stable and correct because I wouldn't see where a reasonable man or individual would gamble with such huge amount of money to win something big. Did they in any way knows the magnitude of what they are doing and that isn't enough also accusing someone else for illegally transferring such huge amount to their bet account. Is she insane or what, didn't they know the implications of gambling with such amount of money?

Seems to me that they are used to doing that but just got caught on their recent attempt.

Kind of a foolish thing to me to file a false claim without knowing the risks, therefore, I will assume that these people have already made good deals by doing it and might have already been able to fool some sports betting sites before with their claims.

Since it's a form of financial fraud, it's really considered subject an illegal activity.

They are even really fortunate that are given an option to just pay the required money to save their asses rather than serving the jail for 7 years.

Maybe the reason why the mother and son pleaded guilty was because they got no other choice but to make a plea in-order to have a shorter jail time rather than making the processes much longer until they will be found guilty beyond unreasonable doubt. It was just a mistake on their part because instead of facing the consequences themselves as they are the ones who initiated the actions, they instead blamed someone else for the mistake they did.

The reason why gambling is strictly for adults is that you must take full responsibility for your actions which include losses and gains. These addicted gamblers cannot successfully defend this allegation because their bank statement will easily show how they wasted the funds. I am sure the court is not punishing them for gambling but for lying. Maybe they want the banking service provider to pay for damages because they want to eat their cake and have it. It also shows the kind of mothers that we have in the society. Mothers that partner with their children to commit crimes. The golden rule of gambling remains to gamble what you can afford to lose and accommodate. This is because trying to recover unbearable losses can lead to committing unthinkable crimes.

It is a pity that this family has become slaves to gambling by seeing gambling as a means of survival,if not nobody will go as dump to gamble off such amount of funds with her son and try to put the blame on someone for their reckless actions. Entertaining yourself through gambling is not a bad idea but when you go at length to take gamble as an occupation,this means that you are chasing shadows and you will live to regret your actions.

Am very sure it was because they had lossed almost all the money that they came back to their senses. Otherwise, we wouldn't have learnt of such a news if they lost it all.
Seriously though, how can you blame someone other person for a loss you knowingly indulged?
The mother and son are just crying wolf to get some pity ceremony in their favour. Even if someone influenced their decision to gamble the money away, they wouldn't have if they weren't already gambling from an onset.
The judge should inquire as to why they are even laying blame on someone else, perhaps they want insurance or their mortgage is due somehow.  At least 7years would give them enough time to think about what they had done.

When the gambling site account can be traced to the bank that they use for deposit to know the whole truth. Some people just want to play smart when they are not smart with information.

If not that the case has already been judged d d d by a court of legal jurisdiction I could have said that more investigation should be done about the posible mental state of both mother and son, because a lot of people in Nigeria are not mentally stable and due to intake of one of two substance it has affected their sense of reasoning and in essence lead them into bigger troubles.

You are right on your suggestion of taking both of them to a psychiatrist for a mental check instead of sentencing them to the wall of the prison because that will have a more negative impact on their mental well-being and could possibly ruin their life in the long run.

What they both need is rehabilitation and not jail because that is a pours case of gambling addiction and mental unbalance.

Wow this story really got me cracking up because I know how unfair that country can be and there are possibilities that who has the highest money has more chances of winning the case and one thing is certain that no matter how hard we try to push blames of losses on others, nature will always have it to tell in you especially when you gamble with money you can't afford to lose and I see no reason why one should gamble so hard that they forget to know when they get off hook and most times chasing after losses is one thing that keeps peole off their checks

So they can avoid 7 years of jail for paying total something like $700 worth of naira? That's insane! I don't know which is more insane, that both got 7 years per person for giving false information about $8000 worth of naira or you can pay off fraction of that to avoid jail. Those options are hardly symmetric. Are these kind of sentences a common in nigeria?

I once blamed my friend when he called me during roulette and i missed my bet that would have won. But i wasn't even serious as i knew it was my fault. And it's hardly in same category.

Good thing that they do able to spent out $8000 but if you do live on a 3rd world country and you do able to spend out that much money then you would really be suffering a long time payment
out of your day job if in case it would be able to be that amicable but we know that it isnt something that shouldnt really be tolerated. Its true that there are more other gambling addicts

this is a great example of two people addicted to gambling and how the addiction can lead people to do the most absurd things, when the person has relatives like these two the person suffers throughout his life and only rests on the day he dies, it is difficult or even impossible for a gambling addict to be cured, this disease destroys the life of the addict and everyone around the addict, in this case of this mother and her son even when they are released they will play again and will get involved in problems, in my opinion the court should have asked a psychologist to analyze the two to determine if they are not addicted to gambling and if so they should be sentenced to spend some time in the hospital to undergo treatment and should only leave when they are cured

That’s a clear fraud, spending the money that is not yours without authorization and that is not a gambling loss to the owner of the money, technically the funds was used for the activity of the Mother and the Son.

You cannot blame someone though if you give the consent to use your money for gambling, because in the end there’s no guarantee return in gambling. If you want to enjoy your money, then better to gamble on your own.

I feel so bad after reading that story. I couldn't believe that parents could be involved with their children in this sort of gambling. Jesus Christ! The money was so huge that the mom could even have discouraged the son to only gamble with a small amount of that money, and at least they would have used some of it for more useful things.

@wiwo, I think I agree that you are correct with the thing you said about them taking some substance that can mess with their sense of reasoning, but again, will the mom and son be taking those substances together so that they both cannot even have a good sense of reasoning at the same time? By the way, it's even more shocking that this kind of story happened in Nigeria.

I don't see this as "double standards", this is literally just mismanagement of funds and fraudulently trying to take it back. All because they couldn't stop when they had the chance. They did the crime, they do the time I say. Countless people experiencing injustice as those who have legitimately lost their funds due to scam gambling sites and these mother and son duo had the cajones to defraud the casino and make an ass out of their sorry selves? Yeah that's a well-deserved punishment in my book.

Not gonna go against this. As with some people in this thread I agree with them being institutionalized in hopes of curing them of their addiction, but they should still do the time. I heard rehabilitation could be done in the jail too, so no excuses.
