People are just greedy and only looking for ways to warm money. Even if that is what they want to achieve, no through something risky like gambling.

It's a case of being in denial. This attitude is common among children, where you tell them that if they keep running like crazy they will fall and hurt themselves, but they ignore you, keep on running, until they fall and hit the floor. Then of course they cry, but when you ask what happened they say nothing. You ask about a lump on their forehead and they answer that there's nothing there, they weren't running and they did not fall. They know that they weren't listening and you were right, but they won't admit it.
The best part about it is that if you confront them they'll keep denying until you touch the lump and they feel the pain. Then they get their reality check and start crying again, because they know they can't hide the proof that they did this to themselves.

We all have our own ways of dealing with problems. Some will shut down, some will deny, some will get aggressive, some will run away. Such is life.

The son definitely needs a strong father figure which is what he lacks. I don't like the punishment or fine give  to them. It is not going to be in anyway effective. Their punishment could have been rehabilitation and community service.

Compulsive gamblers are like that they will deny wrongdoing they will deny that they are hooked on gambling and they will deny that they gambling too much, they are pathological liars and we have a saying here in our country that thieves and liars are relatives, you can easily tell a compulsive gambler to a responsible one, they cannot stand to what is right and very prone to lie, so this is what happens to the mother and her son.

As much as I try not to, there are instances where you can't just help but blame something, or someone, anything really for that matter that just pops up in your vision and you have that urge to blame it regardless of its innocence. Ofc I'm fully aware of what I do and what I gamble with, unlike OP's case here which is more apt to be called "putting the blame" to someone else instead of blaming someone. At least, to what my understanding of what those words mean, that's well, what it means.

I don't like the aspect of option of meagre fine aspunishment either. That is exactly my challenge on this crime that I can't get my head over with. Some punitive measures are just as good as not pronounced because they don't in any way measure with offenses. I have some issues with some legal system because I think a punishment is suppose to wade people off a certain crime, what is pecuniary fine of 150,000 (about $210) as option against a jail term of 7 years or a crime of squandering $8,000 do to prevent future perjurers in gambling crimes.

If the woman and her son had a way of manipulating things on the accused, that fellow would have paid dearly for what he or she knows nothing about. This is purely a case of accusation that would have resulted into making someone else pay for what wasn't eaten by he or her. It can't be a case of double standard because no one is getting any special treatment rather the offender is paying for the crime the committed

It is really hard dealing with emotions when both party are greedy. As one person it might be easier to tackle emotional issues but when it involves two persons they might not see the disaster coming especially when both of them are just too greedy.

I bet they are just taking their chances to use the law to recover their losses since this kind of incident is really happening that hacker use someone bank account to purchase online or gamble.

I believe they have a family history of being a compulsive gambler because they can pretend that they really hacked if they don’t have history of gambling. KYC is not an issue since they loss the money and probably casino doesn’t asked them to do KYC since they didn’t manage to withdraw the funds. KYC typically applied when they already want to withdraw the funds. I think the prosecution evidence on this case are their family  background since a mother and son not typically joining together to gamble if they didn’t do this most of the time.

With this, they just waste money on fine or jail time instead of just accepting the losses.

It was undoubtedly foolish as both mother and son should have been thoroughly betted when making gambling investments. But they directly invested almost $8000 in Nigerian currency Nairo in Sportsbetting without due diligence. I don't know what legal action can be taken if someone gives wrong information and loses betting without checking it.
But I don't follow anyone's information in gambling, if someone has given me any information in sports betting, I must have checked it carefully before following it. As every gambling has ricks and these ricks will be borne only by the user himself. It would not be reasonable to impose this liability on anyone else in the event of a loss, and every gambler must be 18 plus years of age.

Excessive addiction sometimes makes people unable to control themselves and use logic properly, for example like this mother and son. We can't really blame them for their addiction to easy money as we really don't know their background doing that. But one thing for sure, making a false report is something that is not allowed, we must be responsible for what we have done.

Sometimes. Because there are several conditions that make me supposed to win but I fail to win due to external circumstances, like my friend who doesn't advise me to play in certain matches but I really believe that I will win. In the end I didn't place the bet and realized if I had just placed I should have won. Isn't this my friend's fault? LOL.

If you can question this people and ask them how they gambled aways that kind of money without realising it or stopping themselves, they will say they did not know when. This is the height of addiction.

As individuals we should be careful entrusting money to people who we know have a gambling problem.

Seems like they have done this before and it’s only today that they were luckily caught. It only proves that no matter how smart you are, rules will always be rules, and you can’t get rid of it so you can free yourself and continue gambling. Though it’s safe to gamble as long as you are using your own funds, but in this case, the mother and son have really set their plan but unfortunately, they fail to succeed this time. And even if they can fined theirselves and become free again, I believe these two gamblers will never get rid of gambling.

They probably thought it was like a console game where there is a save point and load point to reset the game and do it again. Blame it to others and maybe we will have a chance to go back and gamble. They are lucky the fine was lower than the spent amount which leaves me in a curious mind.
Anyway, that's another gambling news that will be difficult to forget. Trying to get away from responsibilities is really something in the trend these days.

Whoever the person is if they are trapped in a case, of course blaming/slandering other people is a trick that is often used by criminals, especially when this case involves money and gambling, even though Oluwayemisi & Samuel have admitted the error of the legal process continues, because they have made a fake Petition to the EFCC for their actions.

They should have tried to get permission first from the EFCC, before withdrawing money from their sports betting account, if this went wrong, penalties and fines were waiting for them. because they know their country has rules about finance, crime, money laundering and so on, they should be aware of that.

yes, they should have thought about that, there are many ways they can withdraw money from their betting accounts, without having to get ahead of their emotions. if they think that the money has other people's rights and their rights, of course it's safer.

I didn't understand one thing: did they make up this whole story due to gambling being illegal in Nigeria, therefore they couldn't been spotted as gamblers by authorities, or did they do this simply because they wanted to retrieve the lost money?

If it falls under the first case, I don't blame mother and son, as I believe gambling is an individual decision of each person. Governments and regulators shouldn't forbid the activity or punish people for gambling. However, if it falls under the second case, I blame them, because they were acting maliciously to retrieve a money they didn't have any right over it anymore, since they voluntarily played a game of luck and lost it.

I wonder why such a lenient punishment? In fact, this is a financial fraud and in most countries such tricks are subject to criminal penalties. It seems to me that the punishment is incomparable with the amount that they could "win" if they had not been caught. For me it is illogical and I think that it encourages scammers instead of punish them.

I think they're just trying to save themselves from huge losses but what they did have brought them into a worse situation. The truth will always prevail no matter how we cover up our mistakes. Blaming someone else isn't a good idea and it couldn't even save us from our huge losses. We are only dragging ourselves to bad situations more. It will be better to control ourselves or just accept losses in case we lose our funds since that's a part of gambling. We can't blame others if we are the ones who are making wrong decisions.
