Is it possible that TOR also has some level of involvement on this (I guess it does, with all those proxy, bridges etc)? Right now I'm on TOR and when I open my photography thread it's slow as hell (
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5584438.msg66780965#msg66780965). The same goes for the Pizza Day's voting thread. I don't exactly know this this whole image hosting forum proxy related things works, but when visiting a thread with multiple images, it takes several minutes.
I just checked
the Pizza thread in a Private browser (so there's no caching), and it downloaded 164 MB. Some images don't load correctly the first time, reloading the page fixes that (thanks to browser caching). If you're on a slow connection, it's no surprise to take that long.
The solution would be to use real thumbnails on the page, instead of shrinking very large images to thumbnail size. The image proxy is limited to 2.5 MB per image, but there's no limit on how many images you can add in a post.
