I have so many addresses/accounts because I would create one for each source.  I also made one for each mining pool I had registered with.
With this new concept, I'm wondering if I sure retain that procedure.

I believe that the purpose of this setup is to accommodate that sort of procedure. Now it's really easy to keep track of the balances and transactions for each of your addresses, and you can quickly and easily transfer PND between them.
