Update!!
Well I lost it all. My hard died on me. I was able to sync with bitmonerod (thanks for the help by the way). However, my .keys files went down with the hard drive... 534 Monero's!! almost a year worth of mining down the drain.
Well, i still have 1.5 KH/s worth of mining power. Back to the drawing board....
Word of caution to all - BACKUP/SAVE your stuff! Don't be me!!!
Terrible news. You might want to save the dead hard drive. If there is a "moon" event, taking a shot with an expensive data recovery service might be worth it. Those companies cost too much. I looked into it. It costs around 250 dollars (US) and I lost about 1 BTC worth. I might as well just start mining again. on the plus side, on a pool I mined 1 XMR since yesterday

Can't he recover with seed? I never wrote down the seed words. My wallet is from June or July of last year (2014). My stupidity.

FCUK!!! Sorry to hear that...that hurts... Gladfully i am doing backups once a week and using some quality SSD´s Man i feel sorry for you... Be careful with SSDs. I bought a cheap OCZ Agility SSD. I cant afford any quality SSD yet, but plan on buying a Samsung 850 EVO or PRO (when i can afford it). I'm back to using a plain old 1TB western digital hard drive.

Still, in your spot I would personally hang on to the drive and see what happens.

That sucks. I lost btc that way. Education Costs. One way or another. On the bright side, it is extremely unlikely to happen to you again! Oh yeah. I backed up my new wallet onto a 2nd harddrive and onto my google drive. Now I hopefully wont loose anything. Write down the seed words on a piece of paper and put it in a safe place. Hard to be more secure than that.

Not to poo-poo on your XMR mining, but depending on your hardware, you might be better served mining on a multipool that pays BTC and then just buy XMR. Maybe leave the CPU('s) mining Monero and point the GPU's at WestHash or something. 1 each of Geforce 750Ti and GTX 970 lately have netted me the equivalent of ~5 XMR (~0.010 BTC) per day at current payrates, mining Quark algo at WestHash/NiceHash. I leave the CPU to mine XMR directly. (C'mon MoneroHash -- find a block! [been 3 days])

Where in that post did I mention fairness?
I'll say it again. If you want a direct financial payback for your work, just buy coins, and then work to make them worth more. It's maybe "not fair" that you got in early and cheap, but I fail to see any reason that model doesn't work.
A desire to preserve fairness or live up to some lofty ideal are the only reasons I can see for the Monero team not having several hundred thousand XMR set aside for development. A clever individual could have found a way to acquire these coins, and then you could have even preserved the image by funneling them into the donation address. It is an anonymous coin, after all You mean clever like Evan? That's not coming back on his coin at all Also, are you just ignoring ArticMine's FinCen observation or just don't understand that an IPO type launch could DOOM Developers who used this type of tactic to raise funds? I like my Devs free form controversy and governmental investigation. Your selfish-idealism may prove to be the bigger hampering to any long-term project in crypto. Also, is the fact that the best, biggest and most successful cryptocurrency project was/is being carried out in the same manner as Monero lost on you? Bitcoin may have technological limitations when it comes to privacy and scaling, but the launch and development are the biggest success in an e-cash ever. Whatever works, works. The only reason there's not several hundred thousand monero set aside for development is because #1: the monero core team didn't launch the coin, so they couldn't have snuck in (or implemented) anything to the code to set aside these funds... and furthermore, I agree with some of the other posts that your disappointment misses the boat concerning the whole purpose of Monero's existence, which was a fairly launched cryptonote coin with a bitcoin-like emission schedule - it was launched in direct opposition to the Bytecoin scam. But dude, i totally get you - we're holding on to this great technology that needs a fair amount of work to become "perfect", and if you're like me (i.e., you can't code) its like "gaaahhhh!!! how do we make this move faster!!!" And one of the obvious solutions is "well of course throw money on it" but then of course there's this "We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane" But yes, unfortunately we can't guarantee the many hodlers of Monero will donate to Core development. The dice incident is a sure indication that people would rather put their money where returns are tangible than into the blackbox of core development (hence the new funding mechanism) or the blind hope of a random developer. I wish we could figure out the multisig thingy so we could make an "investment bond" or whatever. Wasn't there some time lock that could be useful?

SERIOUSLY! this is what we get for those days getting like 4 blocks in a row. what does your 970 get hashrate wise? I'm still trying to figure out if I should continue trying to acquire 750 ti's or go up a grade.

Sorry to hear that. Just wanna give the following tip. Depending on the drive, and if it is a mechanical problem, SOMETIMES turning the drive upside down gives you enough access time to get some files out.

How exactly did the drive fail? traditional drives have moving parts and can get stuck up with gunk. there is a pad that cleans it off but this gets clogged and can grab the head and stick it firm. A trick I used to try sometimes is the take the handle of a heavy screw driver and tap the drive as it tries to spin up. This can free the read head and bring it back to life. At one company where I was new they were like WTF are you doing? but sure enough they weren't complaining when their machine came back to life. Good luck this might not be your problem but worth a try. Also if you just cant boot from it? maybe it can be configured as a slave to see if there is more accessible data there still from a different point of view (new OS).

Depending on the drive, and if it is a mechanical problem, SOMETIMES turning the drive upside down gives you enough access time to get some files out. I tried that. From what I can tell, my SSD drive is 'asleep' or 'locked'. Something that happens to older and lower end drives. It's a windows 7 sleep mode issue.

It would be very interesting to see how many xmr the donations address received until now. cant say if the hall of fame donations are big or if the pool donations became big over time too.
XMR was since its beginning founded by idealists and visionaires. not all of them have money, but some do. motivation to do so has not been any ROI or whatever i guess, but the vision of a real p2p internet currency that protects its users. Biggest founding is coming from the devs with their time, energy and money. they are the people who are driven mostly by non financial interests it seems.
Investors are different, but also there this kind of attitude exists. Sure all of them want to earn money, but thats not the only reason why they are here. this is what makes monero different.
Regarding TPTB, i guess he is a one of them too. He would contribute for free to this sector if he could afford without thinking about it i guess, just out of interest, idealism, need to save mankind or whatever. But he can't right now, thats why he is looking for money, what i find is totally legit.
me personally is very happy that monero chain has no premine. whats the difference of devs having a premine to dump compared to donations? ok "donators" get xmr in return, but thats about it. Thats not worth it if you ask me.
bulletproof anon, yes - but the rest transparent and open

Anonymint can buy/mine coins and contribute to the project to maximize their worth or get involved in a periphery project--same as everybody else.
This is the thing. At the moment Monero are cheap. One can own a good chunk of future potential for little investment. The idea that there should be those who do not participate in the risk is foolish.

Is $250 worth the risk to recover 534x$25? That's a question for you to answer. But how much does it cost to put the broken hard drive on a shelf until monero is worth $.00003 or $25.00?

There are 30 years of history of free and open source software projects that says people with talent (often truly exceptional talent that would he hard to buy at any price) will contribute. More than that, many people have gotten wealthy doing so, by either leveraging their visible work on open source to further their careers, by starting businesses that leverage their work on open source to create conditions conducive to the success of their businesses, or independently doing other less interesting but more lucrative things while enjoying their work on open source far more (and using it to help stay sane).
Also I don't agree with the model of viewing decentralized cryptocoins as equity, because they aren't, but if you want to participate in the appreciation of the coin as a result of your efforts, the coins don't need to be given to you. That model works just as well if you buy them. Perhaps better (people value more what they have purchased or worked for than what was given or obtained easily).
In the case of Anonymint specifically, he's broke, which is unfortunate and limits his options, but that is not really the rule for people with talent.
EDIT: I agree with the previous post that there is a potential role for crowdfunding. So that is something we'll have to observe and see how it works out.
I see this as simplistic idealism. You're just setting up unnecessary limitations in the name of some absurd parody of fairness. The ironic thing is that this idealism actually hurts everyone involved in the project. There is no value to these economic ideals. They just give you a little tingle, while really just hampering progress. I agree with you brilliantrocket. Actually Smooth is main reason I liquidated most my XMR. I hold 1/4 what I used to, cause of his constant trolling of dash (whatever you wanna say, it's trolling and looks horrible for a dev to do this, and hampers adoption, and investors) as it's very unprofessional. Even when i came into IRC, he still stuck to his stubborn guns in that it's good to correct them. WHO FLIPPING CARES? If XMR is next best coin, they let the tech stand on it's own, and ignore dash. Also with this case, I feel smooth is really out of touch with how things work in real life, and is also hamper advancements for this coin. As for now, I'm still somewhat invested, and know XMR is great tech. But unless different approach is taken, and smooth stops being self appointed spokesperson, I'm going to sit back and watch.
