I have a question how sweep_dust works. I have some xmr including unlocked dust: 1.247663779850

I tried sweep_dust command and got

Code:
Error: not enough money to transfer, available only 0.204482410000, transaction amount 0.460000000000 = 0.230000000000 + 0.230000000000 (fee)

Is all your balance unlocked?
Yes, it's unlocked. But I don't understand those amounts, that wallet said.

I guess I have too many small transactions with dust - I made mistake withdrawing from Poloniex all moneroj including dust few times. Now I withdraw only round amounts.
[Edit] Shapeshift also sends dust when exchange.

I suspect you don't have enough fee to cover the sweep_dust transaction. Perhaps you could try to send a few additional Monero to cover the fee?

There is enough
278.475450179850 xmr including unlocked dust
   1.247663779850

I wonder why balance differs after two digits after comma where dust begins. I am not good at math Smiley

[edit]: I am OK with that unusable dust, just hope everything works correctly.

I never had an issue with the sweep_dust.   I've only had to run it once and now it stays clean.

From IRC:

<moneromooo> I think the <1e-2 part should be the same, yes. Maybe I'm missing a case.
<moneromooo> The sweep_dust failure is likely because it's dust that's too small, that is it's less than amount needed to send itself.
<moneromooo> Nothing can be done about those, except wait to see if fees go down later.
<moneromooo> One *could* pair a large output with a tiny dust one, and send, but you'd lose the dust and more of the large output than the dust, so rather pointless.

...

i dug in my memory and refound this gem :

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1qomqt/what_a_landmark_legal_case_from_mid1700s_scotland/

maybe we can put this story on the monero websites?

Yes, That is the first thing I ran across when I was trying to find the implications when I was researching the term.

It really is a GREAT read and needs to be linked and accessible to those researching Monero. I believe this should be a huge part of the marketing when it starts and there is no reason not to start setting up now for when the push starts.

BTW, Who will be in charge of the marketing aspect when we finally are ready for that phase?

...
Great read. Thanks for posting.

This is one of the reasons I own Monero next to Bitcoin. There is a chance a blacklist will become accepted in Bitcoin or in the Bitcoin habitat which would help it spiral to death. Monero would most likely take its place.

I agree and that is why I want to see a USD/XMR pair RIGHT now! I want nothing to do with BTC anymore it is a dead end that has passed it's time and will do nothing but turn people away from the concept of V currency going on. The Cons are starting to outweigh the Pro's with BTC, the community is splintered and eating itself (whether by design or not) and it is becoming centralized and regulated. ALL things I cannot abide.

XMR needs to be ready to step in as soon as that Gui is ready. And definitely before that Zcash bullshit is released. Because it is guaranteed they will be stealing the privacy spotlight from all other coins even though they have so many gaping flaws they are not to be trusted on release. I just can't imagine having to trust 3 people with an entire economies worth of wealth!! MY god That is worse than the current Banking system!

The Marketing plan and it's supporting infrastructure needs to be ready to be released on the day the GUI is released, not started on at that time. And updating all the literature should be a #1 priority on that list as that is what everyone will be directed to when inquiring. What we need is a pair of eyes that have never seen Monero yet is knowledgeable about using BTC and then send them to the docs and let them make a list of what is to confusing and hard to follow and or missing. then we can address that list rinse and repeat until the literature is easily digestible to the public.

Thank you for your time. I'll just leave it as it is. It's a 'hot wallet' anyway. I just wanted to try this command sweep_dust and found this error interesting.

XMR/USDT pair on poloniex is about as close as you get right now, if you are looking for an exchange.  But if you are looking for reserves, not rapid liquidity, then OTC is less circuitous.  As long as you can locate a suitable escrow agent, it's good.   Many XMR holders should be more than happy to help you get in with fiat.  http://webchat.freenode.net?randomnick=1&channels=%23monero-otc&prompt=1

Otherwise, pester kraken.com.

If it's an exchange based in the USA, there are personal information requirements which must be collected by the exchange. This is part of USA laws, such as the Know Your Customer (KYC) laws, and the exchange must comply with these laws. For example, Coinbase requires you to upload a picture of your driver license, front and back, if you want to link cash deposits from your bank to Coinbase. Since Monero is a privacy-oriented coin, I wonder how many people would be willing to disclose their personal info to the exchange (and to the US govt by extension).

I'm all for opening such an exchange and letting people decide if they want to use it or not, but if I was contemplating opening one, I'd want to conduct surveys first to see if people would be willing to give their personal info to an exchange featuring a private coin. EDIT: Of course, all XMR to XMR transactions are private and untraceable anyways...it's just the bank transfer to the exchange (or vice versa) wouldn't be private.

I don't think that is required for everyone. I've been a Coinbase user since early 2013 and only have provided my name, address, and DOB. Not saying they can't or don't ask more for some users. Just nitpicking  Smiley

They are fixed exchange rate, 1:1 with USD (subject to counterparty blah blah blah) https://tether.to/
In short, you have to sell them to get bankable USD.

Personally I think they are the sensible reserve basis to use if you want to lever a crypto position, but I don't know how to use them IRL at all.

Annoying thing is, they will not accept any of my credit cards.  They say the addresses do not match (but I know otherwise).  So it takes 4-5 days for a purchase to clear.  Circle gives me a 3k USD limit, and only allows instant if I use a card and eat the fees.

Not to early to plan for post-qc crypto world.  Not too early at all.

I know we have discussed Bittrex and AML requirments before in this thread.
So I just thought I should mention that I recently noticed that the Bittrex server is hosted in Hong Kong.

I don't recall seeing that before. Maybe it's just cloudfare that is fucking up my flagfox plugin though.

The following is an idea requesting very modest funding. The way it is presented is good but being my usual clueless self I have no way of evaluating it. Please help in doing so.

I've got a new article up on the news site that may interest some of you.

A Redditor created a fantastic spreadsheet that covers 115 VPN providers with regards to how they handle various privacy focused criteria.  Bitcoin support is there, and Monero isn't mentioned, but perhaps one day that might change.

My little blurb about it is here: https://hellomonero.com/article/spreadsheet-over-100-vpn-providers-detailing-how-they-handle-privacy

The original article is at: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/49gywi/a_little_bird_told_me_that_you_guys_might_like/
