What is the most secure setup for NIS in a VPS?

How to harvest with a remotely hosted NIS without exposing the private key?

thats the brilliance of delegated harvesting.. you dont give your private key to the nis on the server, you give the private key of a proxy address and the block rewards are forwarded to you. i could have full access to you server with nis that you are harvesting on and there is nothing i can do with the information on it, worthless to me..

http://blog.nem.io/how-to-use-delegated-harvesting/

I understand that a proxy address should be used. But I couldn't find any documentation that shows how to set the proxy address in delegate harvesting. Is the proxy address is the address/private key used by the NIS? In this case I would just create a new address to be used by the NIS and use the private key of that address in the NIS config?

when you "activate delegated harvesting" it does it automatically. when the 6 hours has passed, you can click into the "cog" settings next to your address top left, and click "display remote account private key" and that will show your proxy account private key but you dont even need to use that really.. when the 6 hours has passed, you will be able to click "start delegated harvesting" and that will send the proxy key over to what ever nis you are connected to and use that for harvesting so its all automated.

Thx kodtycoon for clarifying this point. I now see the remote private key +full info of the remote account. So when I activate the delegate harvesting a new remote account is being created and shared between my client/wallet and the remote NIS. When I enabled delegate harvesting I was connected to my local NIS. So in this case the remote private key/account is stored locally and shared between my local NIS and Local client?

yes the remote account is stored in your wallet file afaik so from now on as long as you keep that wallet file you shouldnt need to "activate delegated harvesting" again.. the private key of the proxy account is afaik, only sent to nis once you "start delegated harvesting".. is better security practice to use delegated harvesting on a local nis too cos you can then remove your main accounts private key from your wallet and store it on a USB key or something while continuing to harvest with the proxy key.. that way even if someone gets hold of your computer while you are harvesting locally, or someone hacks your computer, they cant steal the funds from your main account even though you are essentially harvesting with it on your local machine. Wink

Quote

If I wanna move to a remote NIS I would have to move the generate harvesting private key/account from my local NIS to the remote NIS? Or the client will take care of that automatically whenever I connect to a new remote NIS?

no, you just "stop delegated harvesting", change over to another nis by changing "host" in settings and then "start delegated harvesting" again and thats it.. you never actually need to know the private key or account number of the proxy account.

Well, launch went smoothly, price keeps growing. What is the next step?

I dont know what the dev team priorities , but as a user I think we need more exchanges and possibly a fiat gateway.

Ps: @kodtycoon: Btw, when will we trade at bittrex?

In the mean time, can any of NEM expert please help me here:

https://forum.ournem.com/general-discussion/quetions-regarding-public-nem-node-and-xem-rewards/

Hi,

Just like NXT, I'm going to make a Public NEM node. It'll be accessible by it's standard ports, as well as via port 80 (using HTTP Proxy).

I know I read somewhere NEM distribution mentioning there'll be rewards for Public NEM nodes.

1. Have those rewards already started?
2. If now, when public nodes will be rewarded?
3. To get rewarded as Public node, is there anything needs to be done? example: giving or submitting Public node info to NEM admins or devs etc, so that public node gets rewarded?

I'll be creating this Public node on 1GB RAM VPS.

4. Do you think 1 GB RAM will be enough to run NEM Node? In my experience NXT node is running fine on 1 GB RAM VPS.
5. What are NEM experts opinion on allowing multiple harvesting on Public NEM Node? I can configure NEM node to allow multiple accounts to harvest.
6. Is there any recommended number to allow multiple harvesting on Public NEM Node?

On my NXT Node, I added hallmark generated for my NXT address.

7. Is there anything related to "hallmark" in NEM. To my little experience with NEM, I don't think so. But, still it's good to confirm to make better NEM Node.

8. Can you point me to any recommended Public Node post, thread, guide or how to?

Right now I just have some idea to tweak and optimize Java, and opening ports of NIS/NCC.

Cheers!

^^ not sure.. i think they are implementing nem but i dont know when they will go live..

Coinomat offered a fiat gateway if their nemstakes were made redeemable.  It would be foolish if that offer was rejected.

1 & 2 & 3, details not released yet.

4 there are few transactions so 1gb should be fine. just remember to open port 7890 to inward and outward traffic or else the node wont be much help to the network.

5) & 6) i think is the most you should go to is 3.. i think one of the devs said before not to go over 3 but im not 100% on that. nothing wrong with allowing multiple harvesters, as long as you dont over load the node with too many harvesters.

7) i think naming your node and opening port 7890 to inward and outward traffic is the only thing you need to do.

Cool https://forum.ournem.com/vps-nodes/list-of-dedicated-vps-nodes-to-conect-nem/

Thanks @kodtycoon!

I'm installing it right now.

Any idea when there'll be more light shed on rewards related queries by? days, weeks, months??

Glad to see that the launch happened smoothly with no major problems. Smiley

Just a few questions though:

1.) I have a NEM private key and address. I looked up my address on the block explorer and all my coins seem to be there. Is there a timeframe in which I have to enter my private key into the client or can collect my real NEM a week/month/year from now? I assume it's the latter?

2.) Why does it say "Status: Locked"?

3.) Can I start forging without doing any transactions? Just the NEM sitting in my account from the genesis block? According to the block explorer, my importance score is 0.1%. Is this good?

4.) Is Poloniex the only exchange that NEM is currently trading on? I only bought 0.1 NEMstake which means I only have 225,000 coins and I'd like to bring this number up to 1,000,000 eventually.

1) As long as you have your private key, you can access your funds at any time as long as NEM itself still exists.

2) Not sure.

3) Yes, if your account is in the Nemesis block then it is fully vested and ready to harvest right away. As for your importance score, I don't think there is really any way to tell if it is "good" or not. The higher the better, of course.

4) Currently only Poloniex but BTC38 and Bittrex should have XEM up for trading sometime soon.

Your private key just allows access to the account that holds the XEM from the NEMesis account. There is no timeline unless you consider the length of time NEM exists as one.

The status locked just means you are not harvesting on that account. You need 1000 XEM in vested balance to do so. And you have to initiate harvesting from within the account. If you do local harvesting it will be the account you are using, if you do delegated harvesting it will be the proxy account that you give your importance to.

You can start harvesting without doing any transactions. Just need the minimum on vested balance. Also your importance score can increase depending on the amount if transactions you do compared to everyone else I believe.

Poloniex is the only exchange at the moment. That will probably change shortly however.

Ah, OK thanks for the replies. It looks like I'll be heading over to Poloniex to grab a few extra coins then. It's kind of surprising to see that they were able to integrate NEM so quickly since new source code coins tend to take a while for exchanges to support but I guess the NEM devs felt it was important for the coin to start trading from day 1. If I have multiple wallets does the settings menu affect all wallets? Specifically, if I enter a host in remote server, do all my wallets have to delegate to that same remote server?

settings does effect all wallets, but if you start one account harvesting on one server and then change IP, the fact you changed IP wont stop the account harvesting on that server. so settings are global for your client but if you do something and then change, the change doesnt have any effect on what you have already done. unless we are talking about local harvesting. if you change from localhost to an IP while loca lharvesting it will stay harvesting, but when you turn off local nis it stops.

So if I enter a remote server in settings which only has space for one more harvester, then I change wallets and change the remote server in settings to another one that has space for one more harvester, will the first wallet still be delegating to the original remote server? I'm not sure this works because when I switch back to the fist wallet it does not say it is harvesting, it says start delegated harvesting.
