Let me try this again.
For people that don't donate at least 2.5%, there is no difference (in the long run). For people that do donate at least that much, and for the pool itself, there is a difference. A huge difference.
As to your idea that he doesn't know what it means, that is obviously incorrect, which is very easy to demonstrate: The biggest part of the incentive structure of this free pool is built around that difference.
That sentence "For ... run)." is ... again ... wrong. As my example showed. So now I have an actual answer also - it is used as an incentive for people to pay a donation. Yep that's a clear reason.

I'm not sure that you understand what I mean by "in the long run". To be clear, it means "averaged over many rounds". Yes, in any one round following an invalid block, some people will be up and some people will be down. However, averaged over many rounds they should all be pretty much even.

I keep wondering why botnet owners are too lazy to setup their own pool, you know you'll get banned eventually. Wouldnt this make them vulnerable to being discovered? Is there anyway to set up an anonymous pool? EDIT: I think something is wrong with the pool, we are having good luck.

Is there anyway to set up an anonymous pool? I would think the only way to discover bitcoin pools (and only the ones that are setup with default ports) would be to scan 1.1.1.1 - 255.255.255.255 for port 8332 being open

They aren't going to scan known address ranges so that cuts down on a lot of targets. Secondly, they could probably monitor/scan traffic at the ISP level for bitcoin traffic and figure out who is hosting a pool.

Eleuthria, the last share has started going over 2 minutes regularely for me, while some weeks ago it would not go over 1 minute. Now it stays around 1 minute and a half by default. The speed of the worker and the rewards are what they should be, so I keep wondering what is changing that gives a different last share value. Those who are going after the botnets are probably backed by security and police agencies. They aren't going to scan known address ranges so that cuts down on a lot of targets. Secondly, they could probably monitor/scan traffic at the ISP level for bitcoin traffic and figure out who is hosting a pool. Yes, they could infect one machine on purpose and check where the virus is sending the shares. I dont see how a botnet owner can have its own pool and keep it secret.

looks like after a block is solved i get a huge amount of stales!! That would be when you generally would get stales. What miner do you use? POCLBM always worked brilliantly with Guild for me. CGMiner always works brilliantly with every pool for me.

There appears to be a problem with long polling.
I reset my stats too, and I noticed that some miners have many stales, but other miners have zero. So, I looked at a box with two cards, one that was showing stales, and the other with zero. The one with zero stales saw two LPs at 15:21 and 15:23 (central US time), while the one with several stales had rejections around those times.
If I had to guess, I would say return of the botnet.

There are connection problems. My miners are showing a lot of disconnections from the servers. The speed of the whole pool has gone under 2000Gh/s and Im guessing it is because of these problems. Are we getting DDOS by an angry botnet owner again? Eleuthria, thanks for fixing last share.

Yet another attempt by the larger botnet to get back onto US Central and West. 94,000 new IPs connected to the pool in the last 3 hours. Just sent a list of the known bot IPs to our colo provider to get them filtered at the edge of the network.
UPDATE: Final count before the new filters kicked in was 139,000 new IP addresses. Anyone with experience with servers knows that trying to hold open 139,000 persistent connections while dealing with 150k opening/closing connections on top of it is going to cause...issues.

Ad Removal has just gone up to 1% donation??? What the hell?
Well, I can say that as a result of this fee that is masked as a "donation", my friends and I are now "donating" 0%. We'll deal with the ads...
Thanks.

I just added another 5870 to the pool last night. One is on Linux and the other on Win 7 x64. The Windows worker is faster somehow. I need to check the Linux system to see what I can do to improve it...

Same problem here. Pool's down? Down for me, too. Pool and website. My miners can't connect either, I wonder what is going on. The website is working for me but a bit slow. My miner stats show my miners are working and the site is updating, yet I'm positive my miner is not working.
