When you send a transaction to somewhere else, you decide what transaction fee to add to it.  In the case of the exchanges, they make it simpler by picking the highest value (quickest confirm time) for you.  If you want your money moved quickly, you need to put a higher fee so that the miners pick it up right away.  If there are a lot of transactions waiting, that transaction money keeps getting higher to get over the top of everyone else.  As we mine, Kano's software picks out the best transactions for us to use in our mining.  Once we get the block, all the transaction fees get added to our mining proceeds.  So the net effect is that when bitcoin is active (more marketing hype perhaps), we get paid a lot more per block we find.

Only thing i wonder: i didn't know that on forehand one could see how fat a block is, as everyone would pick the fattest blocks first?

No, you pray that you hit the next block before anyone else does...if you do then you fill that block with the largest txns you can find

We got lucky in that someone was moving a ton of BTC at that time, and we managed to take our piece of it by solving that block.

Welp my power management issues just got worse. Running the main AC and about 108 here in phx. Also runnine ONE S3. Suddenly ....."Flicker" and everything's out. Go outside and the plug has burned right off the power cord. Shit. Off to Lowes for another male plug, cut back the wire and use the second outlet. 1st is burnt and unusable. Gonna be 110-112 tomorrow and the next day. Gotta shut em down for now till I can figure this out.

A certain other person told me about BTC in Jul 2011 ... sounded exactly like the sort of thing I liked to do that I'd been doing all the time, before I quit my office job about 10 years before that, R&D with as much time to play as I wanted ... but building real systems ... stuff like documentation/postscript font generation/printing in the late 80s when postscript printers first arrived, software to generate software, development build systems, database design of course including DB software itself, ... and accounting and all sorts of other crap like that too for the large companies we dealt with
I had a genius computing sensei and doubled that with computing at university also

Wanted to move them to my shop where I have 220-240v but the damn Methhead manager turns the power off every night to chase out the other methheads that try to live in their units. (it'sa storage facility and I have a Large one with power). They're supposed to open at 9 but usually because he's been up all night the office don't open till noon. Even then I gotta go to the office to ask for the power back. Between that and 30 amp service where I live summers are kinda tough.
     Yah I COULD just BUY Bitcoin but theres not the satisfaction of conquering dilemmas such as I'm having now. Not sure where to go with this but as a retired guy it fills my time.

Did you tell him to keep your power on only?   Can't he shut off each unit's power individually?

He rents to methheads that show up on bicycles and take 5x10s or 10x10s and set up camp in them so he shuts off the entire building. Mine is the only 20X30 in the whole complex. The rent WAS reasonable but rapidly rising. Unfortunately the next step up in square footage would necessitate going back into business to just support it and not have any time for my own projects. "Sides....I'm 65 and not willing to go into a start up anymore. Not complaining  Trying to stay busy retired but not a slave.

The more I read your posts, about your issues, it raises a question in my mind. Have you considered Colocation??? I understand
that it's not as "hands on", but you've definitely got more than a handful going on in your situation. Realistically, if you had none
of your setbacks, you'd just be monitoring equipment, and that can be done while using Colocation. Plus, no Meth-heads!!! Bonus!!!

Haven't explored that avenue yet but I strongly suspect it may not be cost efficient without some higher end mining machines? I may just try listing the lot of them as a package (or singly) to amateurs such as myself and see if I can finance stepping up to something a bit more efficient.

Yes, you'd need s9's or 821/841's...S3's don't cut it in colcation.  It may end up costing a little bit more, but peace of mind and not blowing up plugs at your place is a price to be paying for.
