The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced this hashlet deal is the opposite of what the message on the site states. I.e. it's not about turning off the unprofitable ones, I mean 1 satoshi should be affordable even for GAW. It's about getting rid of Genesis. Someone over at GH did the math based on the Champions list and it turns out GAW could be paying out $5k daily. If they don't have the hardware anymore that's a lot of money to make out of thin air (~2500 XPY to dump each day). Even if they do have some hardware, why should they pay out if they can just stop paying.
On the other hand, Mr.Garza has claimed that 90% of hashlets were converted to HashStakers. I don't think we've seen such a dramatic reduction in the Champions list, so all these numbers could be totally fake.
