POS works by giving interest to people with their wallet open. There is a maturity period of 1 hour before your coins start "staking," denoted by the green arrow. The "weight" will increase as you wait longer, making you more likely to earn a block. This secures the network instead of POW, and provides interest as an incentive to keep your wallet staking.

Also, getting more coins increases staking weight as it is calculated by number of days passed × number of coins in a block. Additionally, the longer you have to wait to stake the bigger the payout, so don't worry about the 7 days - you will get rewarded fairly.

That means that in one year you will earn 25% of what you have right now (if you were to gain no external funds).
