No longer use this address, since my paper private key's lost. I believe no one could deal with that address. The idea of stacking an address is to keep it save and accessible so when needed to be able to prove that you are the owner. Now you have lost twice the access, how we can be sure that you are the one to own the account and not a hacker? He can just say that he lost control and avoid being tagged, which gives him enough time to scam someone. This is just example, I'm not referring directly to you, but there are some concerns. What I can suggest, stake not one but 2-3 addresses at once and keep the private keys separately, NEVER ONLINE! In case you loose one, you still have one or two more to go. Just a tip.

I'd argue that proving control of the address right now wouldn't be necessary. Proving control by signing a message when the account is hacked is what matters in the end. Or is there more to it than meets my eye?

It's probably best to try and sign a message now... proving not only to everyone else but, most importantly, to yourself that you can actually sign a message from that address.
There have been numerous examples in the past of people using addresses from custodial wallets and web wallets like blockchain.com (for staking here and also for airdrops etc), not realising that they are not able to sign a message using their wallet's UI.
Then, when the time comes that a signed message is "required" (ie. account recovery, airdrop claiming etc)... suddenly they find they can't.
Also, some people need/want stake addresses for sig campaigns, loans, trading etc. As it doesn't "cost" anything other than time to sign a message now... there really isn't any reason not to sign a message while staking your address.

I do control the wallet that contains this address but I'm having trouble producing signed messages for it because it's not accepting my wallet password, which I still remember, there was no malicious activity so my BTC is safe, maybe something's wrong with the wallet file. I'll import my seed phrase into a new wallet tomorrow and see if I can get my wallet to open.

This thread is reserved for staking btc addresses that can be used to prove ownership in case of account compromision or to prove account ownership when needed. If you want to use pgp signature to stake your own btc address, then you can use this topic here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1159946.0I do control the wallet that contains this address but I'm having trouble producing signed messages for it because it's not accepting my wallet password, which I still remember, there was no malicious activity so my BTC is safe, maybe something's wrong with the wallet file. If you can't sign a message from that address, then it's useless to stake it. Just use another one or try to open your wallet in another client.
