1  Other / Meta / Re: General History of the Bitcoin Forum?! on: January 14, 2024, 06:12:27 AM

Hey, you're back. Or maybe you never left.

In the years since we last conversed, Bitcointalk has become increasingly more relevant from a crypto historian's point of view -- after all, it houses some epic threads for some revolutionary projects. I reference it rather regularly on Twitter these days for matters concerning old core devs positions on things, old altcoins, early bitcoin projects, and definitively settling matters on who said what or came up with an idea first.

Never left . Sometimes lurking - with the occasional post.
Bitcointalk is and always has been a huge source of
historical information. But currently working on making history rather than writing about it.

2  Other / Meta / Re: General History of the Bitcoin Forum?! on: January 13, 2024, 12:41:25 PM
I think it is time for the administration to provide some official information about the forum and correct some of the misinformation that individuals are dealing with.
Also, this is accompanied by the tenth anniversary of the establishment of this forum, it is shameful that this date is not properly archived.

I think I did a reasonable job in getting the history right and happy to correct any errors. I've tried to write it from a neutral unbiased viewpoint.
3  Other / Meta / Re: The most iconic bitcointalk threads. History on Bitcointalk. on: March 11, 2023, 05:30:07 AM

Now, the only remaining question is about Mt.Gox Support. Most likely, this user received the VIP status together with Karpeles (MagicalTux), for same reason stated by theymos above. In this case, this user should also be removed from xtraelv's list.

Excepting that, I just noticed that xtraelv's OP is empty and all the information appears in the second post of this thread... any idea why?

All information is based on historical information and data still present on the profiles.

Any removal of status I will list as "former". Currently those profiles still display the status.

The OP was used for timeline information only.

5  Other / Off-topic / Hodlonaut Norwegian lawsuit against Craig Wright - needs our financial help. on: August 28, 2022, 11:42:44 PM
https://www.defendingbtc.com/

On September 12 Hodlonaut and Craig Wright will be heard in the Norwegian court.

Craig has tried everything to prevent this from taking place. Appealing each step along the way and has not paid the amounts ordered by the court to pay Hodlonaut.

Craig has said that whether he is Satoshi will be proven in court. This is his chance to show all his proof in a court that requires him to provide the proof.

This court case is a direct result of the BSV community doxxing of Hodlonaut for the $5000 bounty put up by Calvin Ayre.

Craig is still pursuing Hodlonaut in the UK courts for defamation.

The UK courts are particularly biased against defendants of defamation cases. Effectively requiring the plaintiff to offer no proof and requiring the defendant to prove that the statement was not defamatory. This is particularly expensive. Estimated to be around £5m just for a full hearing.

Hodlonaut needs our help to take down this fraud* and his enablers.

https://www.defendingbtc.com/

*Craig was convicted of contempt of court in NSW and lost a civil case in the US for conversion. Ordered to pay $100m plus interest. (Still unpaid) Craig has failed to return BTC sent by reporters that he said he would send back. He has been found by 8 different judges on three continents to have provided false testimony and false evidence.

Craigs funder Calvin Ayre is a former banned director in BC and former indicted money launderer (US). He appeared in the ICE ten most wanted. Later this was settled for a lesser charge to which he pled guilty after being a fugitive for many years.

Other notables that went to jail.

Knightmb - (Michael Brown) for the extortion of Mitt Romney https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4547124.0 (account no longer with original owner)

WME - (Alexander Vinnik) was tracked down for the MtGox theft laundering because of this deleted post on bitcointalk. (external link http://archive.is/6cFcY )

MagicalTux (Mark Karpeles) for the failure of MtGox https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4412667.0 (although I consider him more of a victim of circumstances)

Altoid / silkroad - (Ross Ulbricht) and his co-conspirators https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4437773.0 (Not really a scammer but selling illegal goods and services) His opsec on Bitcointalk and another forum probably gave him away. https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/10/silk_road-au.html

Akemashite Omedetou -  (Roman Sterlingov) - Bitcoin fog service https://darkweblive.net/bitcoin-fog-operator-arrested-in-los-angeles/

Escrow.ms (Pankaj Bhardwaj) - Credit card fraud https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1359865.0

Yankee (BitInstant) - (Charlie Shrem) - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=817069.0
He co-founded the now-defunct startup company BitInstant, and is a founding member of the Bitcoin Foundation. In 2014 he was sentenced to two years in prison for aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money-transmitting business related to the Silk Road marketplace. He was released from prison in 2016. In 2017, he joined Jaxx and served as its chief operating officer, and founded cryptocurrency advisory CryptoIQ. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Shrem

Julian Assange (not a scammer or criminal - but in jail)  probably lurked on here too and Wikileaks got a mention from Satoshi himself in the now famous final quote. "WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us. "

Excepting the examples given by suchmoon, I'd also add the case of knightmb. The case was very well documented by xtraelv.

knightmb account looks like it got sold or hacked some time in 2016 / 17
Went from only English posts suddenly to only Turkish.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=345
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=345;sa=showPosts

knightmb was number 7 richest bitcoin holder.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=321265.0
At one stage owned 371,067.36 BTC
(Which is 3x more than Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss own combined)

Apparently, he went to jail for trying to extort a political figure More info can be seen inside these posts of xtraelv: [1] and [2].

8  Economy / Reputation / Re: The curious case of user 🏰 TradeFortress 🏰 on: December 20, 2021, 06:01:00 AM

Why I'm creating this topic? As I wrote above, it's because I was almost shocked to see that the scammer remained active for 8 more years after all these scams. He was last active here last month. According to BPIP, he is (just) the 28th most distrusted user from the entire forum (but I think he should be placed on a higher spot). Also, as it can be seen on LoyceV's website, there are some users (not 1 or 2, but 13!!!) which trust TradeFortress - a fact which I find to be amazing. Another aspect amazing me is that only 23 users distrust him!

What's even worst is that it also happens that he is a VIP member, meaning that he actually paid 50 BTC to obtain this rank (no matter that when he paid BTC had a lower value). And while such members - VIPs or Donators - should be remarkable figures among us, sadly, there are cases when such titles are worn also by scammers...

Coming back to the story, I still can't understand the guts of this guy, to keep being present here all the time, involve in various threads, in various boards (Bitcoin Discussion, Gambling, Securities, Altcoins, Meta, Offtopic etc.) without having (almost) anybody asking him: "do you really have the guts of actually still being here after all you did?".

Moreover, some actually praise his posts:

TF, thanks for the laugh. When I saw who posted that I laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants.

Very rarely I saw someone which told him something more or less subtle, about what he did and that he does not belong here anymore.

It's like... everybody forgotten his actions... or closed their eyes.

Why is this happening? Opinions...?

I believe part of the reason (going from memory) was the young age (teenager) of Tradefortress when most of this occurred.

The wisest course would be to surrender to the police.
I guess he planed to hide 4,100,000 dollars, then go to jail.
Bcz he is so young, he won't stay there too long.
After being released from jail, he will be a rich in peace.

No he won't, not if we all keep up the pressure.  It seems clear at this point that TF cannot justify the measly payouts offered thus far on the basis of 4100 stolen btc.  Many more than that were on deposit at CL and many of those 4100 have been written off by depositors who settled such as Dumbfruit. I think the points made about a civil lawsuit above are valid, and I think the best bet, if TF doesn't cooperate, is pressing forward with criminal charges.  From what I know about the case, I'm pretty sure a decent lawyer could make a very strong case for conviction.  If TF is really 18, he's facing the prospect of the best years of his life behind bars.  That 's ample motivation to come clean.

Tradefortress, some of us were willing to give you the benefit of the doubt at the beginning, but no longer.  The only way you're going to satisfy us at this point -short of refunding 100%-  is with complete transparency.  Speaking for myself, I have no problem accepting a fair cut if there was a genuine theft -even, in that case, setting aside your criminal negligence.  But you're going to have to justify whatever percentage refund you offer with some concrete and verifiable figures.  Otherwise, I'm operating on the assumption that you're a criminal.
9  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk trolls, dysfunction and all out flame wars. Guide to the scandals. on: December 20, 2021, 05:08:58 AM
Man, you bumped this thread and the last post was from TECSHARE (RIP) and the one before his was from xtraelv, and I'm wondering where he went off to.  He was very active for a while, and then it seems like he just disappeared.
<snip>

Still around and lurking from time to time. Using Bitcointalk for reference and research more rather than posting.

There are several reasons my post count has declined dramatically - the main one being a dramatic increase in workload and change in lifestyle.

I hope to make some more decent contributions in the future.

EDIT:

Like icopress said:

There are others as well who aren't on this list because they weren't top merit earners, and I'm thinking of xtraelv right off the top of my head, though there are others.
I think not much has changed in the last few months since I was interested in xtraelv's affairs, given that he continues to visit the forum, [he was online 5 days ago] but does not post anything. There was a time when I also had a break in publishing, I continued to read and surf the forum for more than a year, but did not publish anything (while I continued to feel involved in forum life).

As for xtraelv, I think he will not scold me if I say that everything is fine with him ... he leads a more active lifestyle than many of us, and in his free time he works to refute the lies that CSW has been telling for years, (at least that was the case a couple of weeks ago). Roll Eyes

As someone who has dealt with / is dealing with PTSD and depression.
1) Seek medical advice. Medication can help.
2) Tell people that care about you how you feel. It is difficult but helps them understand your mood or demeanor.
3) Focus on people that you care about. Look at ways of making THEM happy. Happiness can be infectious.
4) Get a dog.  ( Research the breed so it suits your personality and lifestyle ). Dogs are emotional beings but also live a simple life. It takes very little effort to make them happy and they can be immensely loyal.
5) Exercise and get plenty of sunlight.
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So, you want to get sued by a scammer? on: January 29, 2021, 06:34:22 PM
@xtraelv

It is something that can easily be manipulated with tools such as Adobe and can even be done directly online on a website.
You can change the date, keywords, and other stuff.

Frankly, coming from this person I wouldn't even be surprised. It wouldn't be the first time.

What is the chance to have 2 white papers about a disrupting technology created exactly at the same date and the same hour?
Statistically, you have more chance to win a nice amount scratching lottery tickets

It was sarcasm.

The bitcoin whitepaper is available from the 2009 archive with the same meta data as the one on bitcoin.org

Craigs version has a newer version number, exact same creation time and date.

The simplest explanation is that Craigs version is fake.

Craig Wright must be amazing.

What a feat.

The Satoshi whitepaper with no copyright details attached PDF version 1.4 was created at EXACTLY the same time as the PDF  version 1.6 with his copyright details attached.

A free opinion piece is never the same as a detailed legal opinion.

I've since asked a business associate that specializes in copyright law to have a look at the different opinions.

Wow no, that analysis is just top to bottom full of errors.

"Papers by themselves aren’t licensed".  Not true.  Post Berne convention, any copyrightable work is copyrighted by default, and you cannot reproduce it without a license of some kind. (excepting some special cases like works of the US Federal government)  Papers often do specify licensing (unless they're all-rights-reserved: in which case you're just getting no license), specifying licensing is a universal requirement in academic publication (though sometimes you're not given a choice, you're just forced to assign copyright to the publisher or likewise).

"Open source documentation is also not copyrighted if it is given away in an open source license."  All licensed open source works are copyrighted.  The license permits you to do all sorts of stuff (if its an open source license), but it's still copyrighted and some rights are usually reserved (for example, even the most permissive licenses don't generally allow you to falsify attribution or strip licensing info).

"If the author or other owner claims ownership and registers it or uses (c), date and the copyright holder’s name at publication then it’s usually considered copyrighted."  post berne convention no copyright notice or registration is required for a work to be copyrighted. It's considered a polite practice, but is legally unimportant now.

In the US you need to register to sue in court, but that doesn't need to be done proactively in advance.

"the gift can’t be taken back and claimed as a copyright." The work is still copyrighted, so this sentence is just incoherent.  The licenses isn't revocable.

"If a copyright holder allows publication of a work by other sources and does not challenge this, the holder weakens its claim.", unlike trademark there is no duty to enforce in copyright.  Though there may be equitable defences in some situations (see mention in the letter) they are generally fairly narrow, and don't implicitly create a duty to enforce.

Providing actually false information doesn't help anyone, even if it's falsehoods used to cheer along a good cause.

Edit: After writing this, I found out that my partner, who is an attorney on the board of the Free Software foundation and is one of the authors of the CC-4.0 licenses independantly attempted to correct many of these and other errors earlier today and was just blown off.

I haven't had a lot of interaction with Lauda and am only familiar with some of the controversies.

We chatted via DM about some topics and I found your knowledge impressive. I've never really known how to interpret you but in your dealings towards me personally I have always found you to be fair.

I have a lot of respect for what you have done for the forum and in the bitcoin community.  While I didn't always agree with your methods, or your conclusions , you have served as an effective bogeymam / woman / cat to prevent a lot of people from getting scammed.

Good luck with your future ventures.

You can do your research yourself using various services that you can find in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4586576.0

You can also share a link to the photo so that forum members can conduct research and help you determine the authenticity of the photo.

That thread has nothing on AI face detection. It only lists reverse image search tools.

When did those allergies start surfacing?

The first I noticed was October 2019 with nuisance hives. Thought it was pollen or hazelnuts initially. Progressively got worse since lockdown. Managed with medication but led to a couple of ER visits since then due to mouth and tongue swelling up. Didn't really get a proper diagnosis till about early September. Was hard to get a doctors appointment in person due to Covid restrictions.
