121  Other / Meta / Re: Since 2018, what did you contribute to prevent signature ads removed globally? on: August 22, 2019, 09:49:29 AM
While I have not really done anything with the specific intent of "preventing signature campaign to be removed", I do have my own strategy of dealing with shit posts.
Shitposts come in all shapes and forms, but the ones that I tend to find most annoying, are the ones that are basically disguised as normal posts, but lack any real substance.

It's those replies that are somewhat on topic, but do not add anything to the discussion and the poster usually makes some kind of claim which isn't backed up by anything.
Even today I saw a post like that on a topic that talked about Bitcoin mining profitability.

The thing I do is just call it out, I quote the reply in question and basically correct them. Sometimes I'll use strong language, sometimes not, depends on the situation.
My main reason of doing it like that, is because I think that other people who might see my reply might be inclined not to copy that sort of behavior in the future.

If we want to raise the basic level of intelligent discussion on the forum, the best way to do it is to add intelligent discussion ourselves and try to call out bad behavior as much as possible.
122  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: In the end, the developer who made the token becomes junk! on: August 22, 2019, 09:17:36 AM
That's because the developers are not really invested in the project, they're just receiving a paycheck for their work.
If the project doesn't receive enough funding, devs don't get paid and development will stall eventually.

This is the main reason why it's so risky to invest in projects where the devs do not have anything to say about the token's management.
123  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Creation Cost vs Price: The True BOTTOM on: August 22, 2019, 09:11:14 AM
If you are not an institution with millions of dollars to invest,  Bitcoin mining is not profitable on longterm for individuals, except if you have completely free electricity.

With every halving the mining difficulty increases and with time is more and more difficult to recover the price of mining devices.

And on what numbers do you base this on?
I think it's entirely possible to have a small-scale mining operation, without completely free electricity and still make a profit.

People do manage to buy low quantities of miners on discount, you know. Sure, it might take a couple of months to get your original investment back, but I wouldn't say it's impossible.
Check the Mining Speculation boards and you'll see multiple scenarios where people manage to make money with just a couple of S9's for example.

124  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Get All The Cryptocurrency News In One Place on: August 21, 2019, 02:56:15 PM
It's taking ages for me to load and i'm sure it's not my internet that's acting up.
Took like a whole 2 minutes to get the page loaded.

You definitely could do with a few more tags or categories to filter out the news people actually want. It's way too general at this point in my opinion;
The design itself isn't bad though, so I disagree with what @shield132 said.
125  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: August 21, 2019, 12:34:35 PM
Steem is getting quite a bit of attention on mainstream new websites again, as they're reporting on the upcoming hardfork.
Most notable is an article on Yahoo Finance, where they talk about the new Steem Proposal System, which will give out funding to community-oriented projects.

Check out this article to see which articles have appeared about Steem recently:

126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Twitterarians can you weigh in. Does @Bitcoin support Bitcoin again? on: August 21, 2019, 11:51:44 AM
@o_e_l_e_o

Seeing that just made my day, top notch trolling right there indeed  Grin
About time that this happened, their hostile takeover of the name Bitcoin was one of the tackiest things I've ever witnessed in the whole crypto-space.
127  Other / Meta / Re: At what point does feedback spam warrant a ban / nuking? on: August 21, 2019, 11:30:25 AM
I don't know about supporting that flag, because I haven't read the entire scam accusation against him and I'm not completely sure he's a scammer.

TL;DR

The scam accusations against him are based on the fact that he's offering a service to "protect" you from casino's scamming you.
Some sort of crypto casino insurance scheme, if I remember correctly. Though he has no actual power to actually do anything, while he's still charging you.

Not sure if he's still actually charging people, but I remember that's how he started out and that was the main reason why he got negative feedback in the beginning.
128  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WHEN THE LAST COIN HAS BEEN MINED. on: August 21, 2019, 11:24:58 AM
If a coin has been mined, then we can no longer buy it in the market, unless a few people who hold the coin make sell orders in the market, and the volume will be seen again at a different price, because usually when a coin is getting scarce, the price can be very expensive than before.

That's completely false, haven't you even bothered to read the other replies?
It's all about supply and demand, if there isn't any demand for the coin in question, the prices wouldn't be higher than before.

Of course there will always be people selling, what do you think cryptocurrency is used for? You have to be able to buy it and sell it, in order to use it, that's what cryptocurrency is based on.
129  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: How to find venture capital investors? on: August 21, 2019, 10:57:25 AM
I've had quite a lot of success finding individual investors, just by attending blockchain-related events.
Just talk to as many people as possible and exchange contact info, to build up your network.

Let people know what you're working on and try to gauge interest that way.
130  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Fairlay withholding my BTC for currently no real explanation on: August 21, 2019, 10:44:04 AM
The best course of action is probably to reach out to them on their public social media pages and hope that your posts get a bit of attention.
These things only tend to get resolved fast if their reputation is actually at stake.

Sending more emails to their support obviously doesn't do any good.
131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto's reveal is a complete epic fail? on: August 21, 2019, 10:23:28 AM
You should check out the Twitter account of this guy, that will immediately tell you he's completely fake.
https://twitter.com/SatoshiReveal

Saw some of his tweets in a thread on the Meta boards first, really disgusting stuff, where he's using Hal Finney's name for his fraud & is promoting weird projects.
The way he writes is completely different from Satoshi's original messages.
132  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How people fund their Sportsbooks on: August 20, 2019, 02:04:36 PM
I'd personally stick to the privately funded ones, only those with proof of funding to be exact.
These ICO sportbooks are all over the place and the majority will eventually end up failing, you don't want to invest any of your time in those.

I have no idea about the legal situation of either though, they all seem to operate in some sort of legal gray area.
133  Other / Meta / Re: DT1 with zero or neutral trust on: August 19, 2019, 09:25:42 AM
Ehh, I think sometimes it's better to have no trust ratings at all, than low-value trust ratings such as for small transactions or whatever.
Don't think I've ever actively asked anyone to ever give me a trust rating, but I've done quite a few trades here on the forum.

I'd actually see myself as somewhat trustworthy for a DT position, just if you take all underlying factors into account. (long-time member, haven't scammed, vested interest in staying a member here, etc.)
For the record, I would not actually want that responsibility, I don't give that much trust ratings out myself, so it would be completely wasted on me Tongue

On the one hand, positive trust ratings can mean a lot, but they're really not the holy grail of proving trustworthiness.

Still, I do understand where you're coming from, seems pretty logical at first glance to require DT1 members to have positive trust.
134  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: mercatox.org Giveaway scam on: August 19, 2019, 08:51:26 AM
Lots of pl are falling for this kind of scam. Im usually very curious to find out where the scam part is. I have a dedicated scam email address and use a random suggested password.

Another form of this scam is if someone ask you for "help", There account was locked for external withdrawals but they can transfer to other user accounts. I followed the instructions to find out where they will try to scam me. a standard thing of opening up a virtual box with a clean browser. Turned out to be the same type of scam where at some point the website requires you to "Activate" your account with a deposit.

Yeah, it's always kind of fun to see where the scam goes, you tend to see a lot of those scams on Discord and Telegram.
Some people probably do fall for it, mostly people who have no experience with crypto.

Good that you've taken precautions, using a virtual machine is generally a good move with this.
i wouldn't trust my to visit scam websites with my regular browser, malicious javascript can really do a number on you.
135  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [FREE] Instant Invites to Steem(it)! on: August 17, 2019, 10:15:30 AM
At this point in time, I still have 14 invites to give away.
The delegation I can give away will be a bit smaller though, since I can't give everyone a 50 Steem Power delegation.

Also, if I notice that the accounts remain inactive after a couple of weeks, I'll just remove the delegation, since it would be wasted.
The goal is to actually post, so you can replace my delegation with Steem Power you've earned.

Feel free to send me a pm when you've posted something, I'd be more than happy to give it a nice upvote Smiley
136  Other / Meta / Re: Limit signature campaigns on: August 17, 2019, 10:11:07 AM
Seems like it was given as an option for when the merit system fails. Has it failed? What's everyone's opinion on that?
I'd say the Merit system helped. It closed the flood gates so spammers can't create new high-ranking accouts, while existing rule breakers can get banned.
It's not perfect and there is still spam (especially on some boards), but in general I think the forum improved.

Yeah I tend to agree with that, I mean it's absolutely fantastic that spammers will generally stay at lower ranks, which removes a very big incentive for them to post here in the first place.

A great side effect is that some would-be spammers have probably cleaned up their act a bit and have converted into contributing members.
Too bad you can't really get statistics on that, it's just something I've noticed by reading people's stories or actually seeing a change in someone's post history.
137  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Overview of Universal Basic Income Crypto Projects [24 Projects Listed] on: August 16, 2019, 04:46:27 PM
@TeeJayRu

Thanks, I will definitely keep an eye on those websites.
No worries, I'll add your project once you have a working system in place!
138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Overview of Universal Basic Income Crypto Projects [24 Projects Listed] on: August 16, 2019, 02:01:11 PM
@ TeeJayRu

Since it's in such an early development stage, I won't add it just yet to the main list.
Do reply again when you've come out with a working UBI project though.
139  Other / Meta / Re: Should Evil fees have a maximum? on: August 15, 2019, 09:18:17 PM
This thread makes me wonder what the highest amount of evil fees anyone has ever paid is?
Got any stats on that Theymos?

I know for a fact that an online acquaintance of mine who lives in Ghana couldn't sign up, due to the evil fees being much too high.
He wasn't using tor btw, but trying to sign up while using a public wifi (which many people over there seem to do).
140  Other / Meta / Re: Limit signature campaigns on: August 15, 2019, 04:29:31 PM
@welsh:

Was this the post? Probably not, but he did also state in this one that removing them would be possible.

It's too early to get a clear picture, but my thoughts so far:

First, most people complaining about merit are constantly posting garbage, and should not rank-up. The forum is not a welfare system; you don't run through a few hoops and then get paid for doing something that nobody actually wants. I like that good forum members can make money, especially when said forum members are in poorer countries and this is a major opportunity for them. I very much do not want to destroy the sig-ad/airdrop/bounty "industry". But I am not going to tolerate people posting garbage upon garbage. If the merit system completely fails and I can't think of anything else to replace it, then my next step will probably be to completely remove all ways for forum users to make money from posting (eg. removing signatures entirely).
