I only suggest eWallets to noobs.
+1 However, if the noob is clearly passionate about Bitcoin itself, then it might make sense to discuss the desktop client. When my Mother asked "what the hell have you been spending your time on" I said, "sign up at blockchain.info" and then I sent her a coin, and she got it. Simplicity it key, unless the person is a tech/monetary/economics/liberty enthusiast, then they're ready for more advanced discussions.

1) cost - no smartphone I know of will be able to do a BTC transaction without costing over $100 or requiring a contract. I assume bitcoincard will be under $50
It will be far under $50

Still going... over 13,000 volume past 24 hrs.
BTC price in USD at that exchange is now $5.64, and almost 4,000btc in bid orders are still there above $5.00 (I'm converting from yuan, obviously).
Gox is only at 20k volume today... it is theoretically possible that BTCChina would surpass Gox at some point here temporarily. THAT would be the first time any exchange has surpassed Gox's daily volume. I've never seen it. And for it to be CNY doing it?!?
|
|
|
That, is a spike. BTCChina became 2nd largest exchange today after Gox. Over 7,500 btc traded.
|
|
|
Wow look at that volume spike (and there are no higher volumes further back in time either on that chart)

Sadly there isn't any similar system to the Boleto Bancario in place here. I'd say the only valid methods would be bank deposits, transfers, cash and possibly some sort of payment service via SMS or calls such as Dialcoin offers. Opening an organized exchange here could be an extremely profitable venture, there is a sizeable segment of the population that already turns to online currency exchangers to fund their online purchases, send money overseas, etc. so that's a huge pool of potential users right there.
Pardon me for perhaps being naive... but doesn't Venezuela border Brazil? Would it not be possible to set up a network using BitInstant's Boleto system in a Brazil town on one side of the border, and an exchange in Venezuela on the other side of the border? Then sell Bitcoins for bolivar in Venezuela, then exchange bolivar for reals in Venezuela or Brazil, then deposit those in Brazil via BitInstant/Boleto to buy more Bitcoins. I believe Argentina borders Brazil also right? And aren't they also having a bit of a currency crisis? Implement the same system there

If and when this actually happens, it will please me immensely. It warms my heart to see Bitcoin enabling liberty in regions of tyranny (whether USSA or Venezuela ) Maria, please keep us updated on this. Also, you are aware of BitInstant's new cash deposits via Boleto in Brazil? Perhaps that will be of use to you.

Now up to 7,100btc volume, BTCChina overtook BTC-E today for second largest volume exchange. Never seen this before.

A bunch of us are flying out to Austria next month to see the product in action.
Will keep everyone updated
Hello Yankee, Any news about this device? News will arrive around June 10-15th

Over 4,500btc traded today on BTCChina. This is the highest volume yet, and May has already seen the record broken twice prior. Current price is over $5.20 in USD vs. $5.00 USD on BTC-E... so any of you who can arbitrage I recommend you look into that pair of exchanges. The Chinese might need your coins, better have them ready. http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/btcnCNYEDIT: now up to 7,100btc volume, BTCChina overtook BTC-E today for second largest volume exchange. Never seen this before.

Have you guys not learned a thing or are you just insane? Who would put a single Satoshi to such a platform again these days after what just happened to Bitcoinica, not once but twice!?!! People are so ridiculously stupid.
Have you gentlemen learned nothing from the Titantic disaster! We can never build large ships, nor sail the Atlantic, again! Thank goodness most of us keep moving forward, knowing the risks, taking the hits, examining the mistakes, and building things better.

How do these ship? Bare or in an envelope? I'd pay extra for that, want it in pristine condition.
My two copies were in a USPS mail envelope, they were in very good condition upon arrival.

+1 Or read Rothbard's short book, "What has government done to our money?" <-- best book on "what money is" and "why it's useful" ever.

1. Send all funds to a new Instawallet or Blockchain.info wallet 2. Delete your original wallet file (don't uninstall Bitcoin, just delete the wallet file) 3. Open up Bitcoin app, and a new fresh wallet will be created. The blockchain will already be there, no new download. 4. Send all funds now to your new wallet address.
