I'm going to have to side with gweedo as well... ASP.NET is horrible for scaling. Not technically, although the things POF.com have had to do to make it run well are pretty damning, but financially. A startup could really put to better use the $800 spent on each Windows Server license, not to mention the $2500+ for a MSSQL server (1 core!!!) license. Even their bizspark stuff has costs looming in the future. Also, for a Bitcoin web site you don't want to touch Azure for security reasons (at least not for the backend.)

ASP.NET is precompiled, so it will always be faster than php.

You don't need to spend any money up front when developing in .NET technologies.  You can use encryption on Azure, and scale as you need to.

Thanks. but no thanks.

Mitty

Great point. And idiots like smoothie wouldn't dare show his face and make the same inane comments in public. He adds no value to this board and he certainly adds no value to bitcoin. And he probably knows it which is why he continues to troll this and every other thread he comes across. Op you should just lock this thread now and the rest of us can enjoy thoughtful and intelligent conversation at the conference.
1308  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Just bought my ticket for Bitcoin 2013 in San Jose! on: January 26, 2013, 02:53:06 AM
You people who plan to go and are organizing this conference are better using that money to further bitcoin, not have fancy conferences where you basically tout your LEET skillz in making tonz of moneyz.

Having a conference in fact is using money to promote Bitcoin.

Quote
Bottom line, people are better off keeping their finances and conserving than attending a bitcoin conference.

Only in the same way looking at porn is a better way to enjoy sexuality than going out on dates.

And smoothie obviously knows about that.
1309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: There has to be a better way (getting USD to BTC) on: January 26, 2013, 01:41:25 AM
Have you tried ?

I advise caution when using BitInstant there have been varying reports of selective scamming.

Who are you??

There have been reports of system glitches and user error that have been resolved.

Please point to a bitinstant scam report.
1310  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla Begins PayPal-Style Account Suspensions on: January 26, 2013, 01:30:14 AM
This is because a law has passed in congress requiring more verification for online payment options. They now require you to send proof of location, ID, and tax returns. More power to the Bitcoin!

What law is that?
1311  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla Begins PayPal-Style Account Suspensions on: January 25, 2013, 06:38:21 PM
ben-abuya,

I think you will have better luck buying OTC.
1312  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla Begins PayPal-Style Account Suspensions on: January 25, 2013, 04:39:02 PM
My point is while this thread is Dwolla specifit

ANY fiat account that is use to buy, sell or trade bitcoin is subject to suspension and/or termination.

The good new is that they do have to give your your money back after a certain period.
1313  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla Begins PayPal-Style Account Suspensions on: January 25, 2013, 04:18:39 PM
This is a fraud issue.  Now an individual user issue.

It's just too easy for hackers and crackers to opening Dwolla accounts link it to a hacked bank account or open both with false credentials then exchange fiat for bitcoin and poof they are gone.

Large banks can write this stuff off cause they pass the costs it off to merchants and they generate a ton of revenue.

Dowlla as new business with ton's of venture capital has no sustainable revenue, so they have to cut these losses.

This happens regularly with
Paypal
Credit Cards

I'm seen it happen with
Bank Of America
ING Direct

And I'm sure others have seen this too.

Until individuals and business can generate bitcoin through work for goods and services and Bitcoin become the sole medium of echanges  the intersection between fiat and bitcoin will always be bitcoin's Achilles heel.

Care to remind me which
serious web facing business
you operate ?

Rails is awesome, deal with it.

I don't operate a serious web facing business.  Actually most successful webshops start designing their  custom code as they grow.

facebook.com operated on php/js/mysql LAMP stack until it grew into the multi-million users mark.  I believe their back end is now  C++, Java, Python, and Erlang.

Mt. Gox does pretty well on php/mysql

There are dozens of other examples.

I just don't know Rails.  Here is someone's list of top 50 rails sites.

Seems a little light on  financial service site.

But like I said, It not the language as much as it is the dev's knowledge of that language.

So to each his own.

Maybe if you had someone to talk with about it you wouldn't be so angry all the time.
