1301  Economy / Speculation / Re: I don't want a $2,000 bitcoin by February on: January 05, 2017, 05:24:21 PM
I'm with you bro! I don't care about price I care about continued expansion into new markets and mass adoption. For me this is about something much more important than money.
1302  Economy / Speculation / Re: Huge drop while i am asleep! This is BS on: January 05, 2017, 03:45:08 PM
It's a perfect time to trade in China?
1303  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin showing it can take a big punch on: January 05, 2017, 03:26:13 PM
I agree. We must have a lot of new people here because this is nothing compared to drops we have seen in the past.
1304  Economy / Speculation / Re: Please give me advice, Bitcoin will rise again or go to hell? I'm scared on: January 05, 2017, 03:23:58 PM
Emotions are not your friends when it comes to money. You should address your questions to a calculator instead of people.

1305  Economy / Speculation / Re: Panic selling started ! on: January 05, 2017, 03:07:38 PM
the fact is that this is the only big problem with the crypto industry.  the prices are based on nothing more than the whims of a large group of mindless cows.  i am not saying that it is a bad thing that the price is volatile, just that it is near impossible to get people to accept this as a standard currency as long as four or five guys on a couple chat boards can manipulate the price so easily.  this is the biggest hurdle that must be gotten over.

I don't think that is going on at all. The recent ramp up sent us into silly territory as prices got way ahead of any logical price. It was high time for a correction. I know its brutal out there but this is exactly how a free market operates.  The U.S. stock markets also used to do this. Now there a million controls on the market and it is even shut sown if it drops to fast. That is actual manipulation. What you are seeing in the BTC market today is what happens when there is no ability to control the sell/buy decisions of individuals.
It really comes down to speculation. Many BTC speculators do not give a shit about bitcoin. They are trying to make dollars or Euro. They drive up the price in a frenzy then reality sets in and people realize that the price no longer makes sense. Those speculators then dump their coins and... POP!
It has happed many times before and is going to happen again. All is well.
1306  Economy / Speculation / Re: Panic selling started ! on: January 05, 2017, 02:45:27 PM
Finally. We needed a correction bad. I'm kinda hoping for a drop to say $830. Then we would have a more solid base to work with.
1307  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Accept Bitcoin Donations With A Text link on: January 04, 2017, 08:17:46 PM
If you plan on using a QR code be sure to check periodically to make sure no one has altered your website and put there own QR code in place of yours. It might be difficult to notice that your donations are being siphoned off.
1308  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is BTC going to crash again like in 2014?? on: January 04, 2017, 08:13:20 PM
You mean will it ever go down again? Of course it will. The little squiggly line goes up and goes down. But mostly goes up.  Wink

If the government came out today and declared that Bitcoin cannot be accepted...

How? What government? Tonga republic?

If Amazon was ordered not to accept Bitcoin...
By who? Tonga republic again?

In order for Bitcoin to work in a world that is hostile against it, it needs the anonymity of cash. What happens when that goes away?
How and why would that go away?

1315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin GEOCACHE in Iceland FREE money!! GAME STILL ON!! on: January 01, 2017, 05:04:40 PM
One year left!

As per the note in the geocache I will move the bitcoin if it is unclaimed by 2018, one year from today. I think I will continue to offer a small reward for finding and photographing the cache after 2018. As far as I know the paper wallet is still just sitting there. We can see that the money has not moved anyway. If it goes unclaimed I think I will structure the next game differently. Maybe more small treasures or something fun like multiple wallets with the same private key, so that it is a race to find and move the money.

I guess this needs to be stated every page.  Roll Eyes
In the U.S. You absolutely owe capitol gains tax on any rise in price. No question at all about it.
https://www.irs.gov/uac/ten-important-facts-about-capital-gains-and-losses

And to clarify, the mining fee is payment for service and not a tax. Taxes are levied by governments. Bitcoin is not a government.

It's embarrassing to see how many people understand nothing about taxes. How do they survive in society not understanding their taxation responsibilities and why are more of them not in prison?
I don't get it either? Maybe economics should be mandatory in high school rather than active shooter or diversity training? Those things are fine, but it feels like we are turning out people who are just not equipped to successfully navigate the economy. They participate in financial instruments they don't understand from predatory lending to the retirement schemes. They pay taxes into a pool that is often squandered on waste and fraud. I don't blame them. They are coming into a system that, at least here in the U.S., has become a gamified Rube Goldberg machine.

Instead of hearing about all this in school, children are still taught under the assumption that sitting in rows leads to a factory job, a house,  then a pensioned retirement after 20 years. Yet the economy is nothing like that anymore.
1317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The European Union Wants to Identify Bitcoin Users on: January 01, 2017, 03:38:07 PM
This seems like a hard way to find money launderers. They are getting away with it using PayPal and other services that require all sorts of ID. With bitcoin I think it would be much more difficult.
1318  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2016 compared to other years? on: December 31, 2016, 06:20:55 PM
...
With stocks you see a rapid increase in the first few years as a company gains traction in their respective market. Thousands of percent increases are not uncommon because the value of the shares are going from pennies to large dollar amounts. After the first few years it becomes almost impossible for any stock to give a thousand percent increase because the dollar amount necessary is just too far out of reach. For example, at a starting price of $900 Bitcoin would need to grow to $53,307 to gain another 5923% increase as it did in 2014. That means an individual trading in "shares" of Bitcoin will need to pay $53,307 for just one. Even the most wealthy, and foolhardy, investors will do a double take on that one. While insane gains are no longer realistic smaller gains are still impressive. From this point forward, I fully expect Bitcoin to stay in the normal growth range for a mature stock.
All very good points!
And at the same time the supply is increasing assuming new coins remain available for circulation.
Here is some more fun with math to make your point. It take an ever increasing amount of capitol to move the price up by the same percentage.

Date                           Market cap                 Price                Supply
January 4, 2015    -     $ 3,856,200,918         $ 281.79           13,684,794

So in this year it took  $2,631,749,890 to go up 53% or about $49,655,658 pr percentage point.

January 3, 2016    -     $ 6,487,950,808         $ 431.45           15,037,467

Over about the next year it took $7,627,735,314 to go up 104% or about $73,343,609 per percentage point.

December 25, 2016 - $14,115,686,122    $878.81           16,062,338

Thanks everyone for your kind words, it was not that much work. I'm still most surprised at how unique each year turned out. I expected they would mostly show gains, but they vary so much more than I would have guessed. It really shows the boom and bust cycles. I wonder if it will be more stable with mainstream adoption?
