less then 1 GHash = prospecting

1 GHash - 999GHash = mining

1THash+ = strip mining

10 THash = thermonuclear mining
1322  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Nitinol - A New Free Energy System on: March 11, 2013, 03:41:19 AM
For the last bloody time, NO SUCH THING  CURRENTLY IN EXISTENCE AS FREE ENERGY!

Just because it doesn't cost any money doesn't mean it won't cost resources, what's good about these ideas is that they are decentralised and don't rely on an infrastructure to operate.

The OP title is really bad.  Nitinol is not new it is from the 80's or even before and it is not free energy it is a waste heat recovery system.  Maybe more like "Nitinol: waste heat recovery system"

With the advent of ASIC's this is not going to be anything of special interest to bitcoin miners but it could be used like two other technologies (peltier & stirling engines) to get some electricity back from the waste heat of mining.

1323  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Netflix will be the next one on: March 11, 2013, 02:21:16 AM
I thought they were on big growth curve. What is the reason do you think?

Netflix' collection is shrinking as content owners revoke their permissions and seek to monetize their libraries by cutting deals directly with ISPs or using their own distribution channels (for example "HBO To Go"). Netflix has become a glorified middle man and now that digital downloads are displacing physically mailed DVDs, they no longer have a market advantage.

Netflix will go the way of BlockBuster.

Correct.  The big content cartels have attempted to increase the fees collected from netflix by a factor of 4 or more.  When all of the multi year deals end they will either have to offer less or charge much more.  They have already started to make their own content but also cut back greatly.

They may not die but it is going to be hard for them going forward.

1325  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: BUYING BFL SINGLE SC! on: March 10, 2013, 06:07:06 AM
come on guys.. with those kind of attitudes you would have us folk rooting for you to lose all your money on the BFL "scam"..
at 200 btc at current levels is anyone willing to return all the btc if BFL is a scam? or delays their orders?...
everyone just trying to make a quick buck
Hey I'm not rooting for anyone to get scammed anywhere!

And I'm sorry if the exchange rate has devalued your offer, but when dealing with a piece of hardware that mines Bitcoins (not USD), I look for what I can sell it for in Bitcoins (not USD). If this thing can generate 100BTC in one month, why would I sell it for a fraction of that? It has to make sense for both of us.

Right now it would do about 200 BTC a month.  The question is how long for delivery.  Difficulty is rising but this next jump does not look too bad.  Two 20% jumps from now and it still 77 btc for two weeks and 61 btc for two weeks after that give it 49 btc for the 5'th and 6'th weeks.  Total BTC is 187.  It will still generate after that a good amount.
1326  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: BUYING BFL SINGLE SC! on: March 10, 2013, 04:48:52 AM
I would sell my BFL Single SC pre-order if the price was right.
1327  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new name for mining on: March 09, 2013, 05:00:09 PM
Why not just call it "processing"?

Like this hypothetical statement: "I just got my ASIC bitcoin processor in the mail the other day, now it is processing away at 2 Ths. I like being a processor because it helps the network, plus I get the 25 bitcoin processing reward when I hit a block."

Seems to work for me, thoughts?

I agree.  I am fine with mining because it is so ingrained into bitcoin but while boring "transaction processing" fits the bill and gives no false illusions of easy profit.
1328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL]Are SatoshiDice transactions hurting or helping Bitcoin? on: March 09, 2013, 03:59:17 PM
Why not create a proper poll?  Have options that are positive vs negative and neutral only.

"Satoshi Dice is great, it is stress testing bitcoin"
"I don't play it but respect other peoples rights to do so"
"Satoshi Dice creates demand for bitcoin"
1329  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info Colluding with SatoshiDICE to spam the network? on: March 09, 2013, 06:57:32 AM
Now that Blockchain.info has been down, the network transaction rate is down by a factor of 66%. And yet the Bitcoin price is completely stable. This is evidence that SatoshiDICE's influence on the Bitcoin price is a lot less than often claimed.

But we can also see that Blockchain.info is the main driver of traffic to SatoshiDICE! This is because they provide direct links to gamble your wallet coins on SatoshIDICE. Since Blockchain.info has been down we see the true impact of this (paid?) advertising.

If Blockchain.info / piuk wanted to do the right thing they could just remove the SatoshiDICE direct gambling links from http://www.blockchain.info until Erik Voorhees fixes the transaction spam using one of the three methods I suggested, or implements his own method that is more network friendly.

How many anti Satoshi dice threads are you going to open?

Really, you are the one filling our computers and screens with spam/fud/crap more then those you accuse.
1330  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB In Hand Avalon Asic on: March 08, 2013, 05:11:40 AM
And you can't forget that we don't know if the price is going higher.

BTC price going up is uncertain, but difficulty going up is certain.

It might be, but you are talking about an IN HAND unit.  We know what the difficulty is now and we can estimate reasonably accurately what it is in the next cycle.
1331  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think SatoshiDice is blockchain spam? Drop their TX's - Solution inside on: March 08, 2013, 05:09:15 AM
You want to use p2p technology, but don't want to contribute resources?

That should be being asked of SD, not of me. I give more resources to the network than I take. SD pays the miners and the winners of their game but takes more from the network than it gives overall.
Every time you or I broadcast a transaction for our own reasons, we use exactly the same resources and pay same fees as anyone sending an SD transaction. After all the noise here, I still fail to see the difference and a problem.

Difference is quantity.
And why should I care about fees on the transactions? I'm not a miner.
So, for these 2 reasons SD tx's aren't the same as others.

Now for some critical thinking: So some of you guys say that SD is just exploiting a "flaw" in the Bitcoin protocol design that allows them to leech resources from us for their own profit and that it's alright to do it, right?
Well, I'm exploiting a flaw on SD "protocol"(them always using the same addresses) and that should also be alright.
After all the noise here, I still fail to see the difference and a problem.

On top of all of the points why transaction censorship is a bad idea, your solution only starts a cat and mouse game and will even take down legitimate transactions.  Satoshi dice can first make the bet addresses random but published.  Then they can change them once a week.  Are you going to keep playing this silly game?

Also the chance of a 1dice transaction having nothing to do with SD randomly are low but real.  Even casascius had a random transaction that was 1fake.
1332  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think SatoshiDice is blockchain spam? Drop their TX's - Solution inside on: March 08, 2013, 03:42:51 AM
The blockchain needs to grow to be able to handle these so-called "spam" transactions that are following the rules of the protocol, even if you disagree with them from a moral/sensibility perspective.

Bitcoin is all about open access and anti-censorship. It is kind of grating to hear people say "these stupid gamblers are ruining BTC, we need to block all SD transactions!!". Go somewhere else to create your own anti-spam/anti-gambling currency. Oh and in case you are wondering, I have never used any BTC gambling site. But I believe no one should have the power to control how one utilizes his or her resources.
you're arguing that your computer resources should be used to relay gambling/spam/drug dealing/whatever activities you don't agree with just because it's "censorship"

Bitcointalk user 100x is hereby sentenced to run a Tor exit node without his approval, given that it's not a problem for him to relay stuff and it could be seen as censhorship by closed minded persons as, well, 100x.

No, your analogy would be better if I was already running a Tor exit node, and you were recommending that I block traffic to certain sites (which would be impossible, due to encryption at each step, if I recall properly).

But I'm not recommending anyone to do anything. I'm showing them they have the option, and it's something which is very possible to do. The only persons trying to convince anyone of their "righteous" view points are you guys who don't agree with this hack.
I know you guys would prefer a SD/BTC doomsday thread where I tried to convince everyone this is the right thing to do, but this one isn't it.

I even made a call to action in the thread title for the users who thought SD is blockchain spam, but you guys all flocked here en masse, not really sure why, if the message wasn't intended for you...

It seems like you fail to understand how a forum works.
1333  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Rand Paul (KY) Fillibuster for Freedom on: March 08, 2013, 03:08:32 AM

Funny title though.  It is NOT a Fillibuster for Freedom though.  It is a Fillibuster for Due Process.
1334  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Max block size limit - why I'm not worried about miner centralization or attacks on: March 08, 2013, 03:00:05 AM
Eliminating the block size ceiling is asking for a network (D)DoS.

That is few people are thinking about elimination.  Maybe 4x to 10x the current space.  Combine with an intelligent fee structure and blockchain spam will pay for itself.
1335  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think SatoshiDice is blockchain spam? Drop their TX's - Solution inside on: March 08, 2013, 02:54:03 AM
I understand you. But you, being a miner, are being rewarded for those transactions. Me, being just a regular node and a non-miner, I'm being ripped of my resources with no reward whatsoever.
In fact all I have are disadvantages: Higher fees, delayed transactions and resource hogging.
Not wanting to hurt them, only wanting them not to hurt me.

Again, not saying you do not have the right to do this but it is pretty dumb.

You DO get something from relaying those transactions.  You get others relaying YOUR transactions without discrimination.  You are working to break that part of bitcoin.  Just like using bittorrent and LEACHING only is in your short term interest, it saves bandwidth too.  It is not in your long term interest, well at least if you want to continue using an UNCENSORED BITCOIN.

Cut the slack Littleshop, everyone is free to do as they please, miners and users included. Nobody is censoring anybody, is just having the choice to "ignore". The transaction will still get into the blockchain if miners include them anyways, but users that don't want to waste CPU cycles and bandwidth are free to do so. So your point is?

I have said exactly what you have said.  Everyone is free to do as they please.  And everyone is free to criticize someone for doing something stupid.

Dropping transactions from a specific person IS censorship.  Just like VISA/MC do.  So go ahead... be like them.
1336  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think SatoshiDice is blockchain spam? Drop their TX's - Solution inside on: March 08, 2013, 02:51:57 AM
You are working to break that part of bitcoin.

Are miners doing the same when they ignore transactions because it will cost them money or its not worth it? Bitcoin is a market as well as a currency and a network. If a part of the market says, "I choose not to consent to the use of my time and resources in these kinds of transactions", why should anyone care?

Ignoring transactions because they do contain or do not contain fees is part of the free market.

I am talking about SPECIFICALLY dropping transactions from a specific person REGARDLESS OF FEES.

Sure you can do whatever you want, but asking others to do the same is stupid.

For the last time: I'm not asking anyone to do anything. I'm informing. People will have to make up their own minds and act accordingly. Deal with it!

If you guys wish to discuss the validity of this solution, there are already threads to do that. This is an informative thread with a solution to a known problem.

I agree.  You have a right to speak and inform.  Others have a right to say why it is a bad idea.

I personally will include SD transactions with my miners.  If my pool says they will SPECIFICALLY omit them I will leave the pool.  If my pool decides to set a fee structure or rules (limits) that reduces them or collects a reasonable free I am fine with that.
1339  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: March 08, 2013, 01:06:55 AM
Hello, my name is Steven and I use satoshidice often with my coinbase account. However, yesterday in the morning I made a bet using MTGOX which I won around 20 BTC which is shown here:
http://satoshidice.com/full.php?tx=b36e960a0336c4ba1f262658b3fb9a11ea65708351fb4469f4d8c8f9f1bdc5c2
However, I have not received my payment yet.

I contacted MTGOX support yesterday.
http://imgur.com/TMu3mqx
In short, they told me that the send address is changed every time I send thus my payment seems to be unredeemed of some sorts according to these websites.
I have sent in a couple more support tickets but they keep asking me to message satoshidice but I do not know how.

My winning coins seem to stuck in an address that I don't know how to access.
http://blockchain.info/tx-index/58730665/7e05a89f9eb883fb680b29d9fca4df2c76a12f0d16affbdffa8fb0ccad2908db
http://blockexplorer.com/tx/7e05a89f9eb883fb680b29d9fca4df2c76a12f0d16affbdffa8fb0ccad2908db#o0

I tried to prove to them through a history.crv file of my transactions : http://imgur.com/y1CAqDP, that the transaction that took place was at the EXACT same time, Same satoshidice address, same amount as the satoshi dice transaction which won me my BTC. I do not know how else I can make my argument.

Now I admit I have made a mistake. I should have continued using Coinbase as my base of operations for satoshidice, tried and true method. However, I will continue to keep messaging mtgox because I am a newbie and don't understand exactly where my BTC is currently residing. Has it just disappeared? I do not have much value and this is quite a lot of money to me. I just want this to be resolved and know for sure whether it is just gone forever or redeemable because it seems the coins are just sitting somewhere and I want to know what I must do...

Best,
   Steven

Gox does have the private key but they just are most probably not willing to go through the effort.
1340  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB In Hand Avalon Asic on: March 07, 2013, 11:02:21 PM

Too low, that is only $250 BTC @ ($40/usd).  They went for BTC100 at the time so you are only offering a $4,000 dollar premium over their cost.  I think you will find with where Bitcoins are going, you will need to offer more, like $15-20K.

The difficulty should skyrocket when the bulk of the orders ship. Also is your math off or is it me?

Well in two weeks an IN HAND A.A. will produce $4400.  In two more weeks it might do $3500.  Two weeks after that maybe $2500.  You are only offering around six weeks revenue.  Most people are going to want more then that.
