I think this experiment was a complete success in proving that you can achieve dissensus without too much effort. Wink

1322  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Why do people use faucets? on: August 29, 2015, 03:09:59 PM
Yes, faucets are meant for newbies to get some bitcoins for free and get the feel for using them. They can then transfer them to a wallet, see how the fees work, maybe accumulate a few more and try gambling etc. I do not think anyone using a faucet expects to get rich off of them, but it is a good way for someone new to bitcoin and maybe a bit leery on how it works to get experience before risking their own funds.
1323  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNOFFICIAL] VNL | Vanillacoin 0.3.2 | DarkPP/MinerPP/CoinPP | ZeroTime BETA! on: August 27, 2015, 12:51:52 AM

Thanks.
I'm in the top 100 but Jesus, some people have a fuck-ton of  coins :O

Nice, but I see it takes a solid 15k, almost 16k VNL to break into the top 100. Even at these lower prices that's a good amount for an alt, about 4.5 BTC worth.

Funny how the top 25 control more than the 101+ group. This just shows no matter what wealth is held by only the top 1%, assuming there are least 2,500 unique VNL users with some amount.
1324  Other / Bitcoin Wiki / Re: Wireless Service Paid w/ Bitcoin on: August 26, 2015, 08:28:03 PM
It is nice that they accept bitcoin, but after looking at the plan rates it didn't really seem all that competitive. I just do not understand this bitcoin premium phenomenon going on at all the places who accept it are usually higher than their cc only competition, even though bitcoin is cheaper in fees so they make more in the end.
1325  Other / Off-topic / Re: 2016, The Year of Bitcoin? on: August 26, 2015, 08:17:17 PM
Every since the high in 2013 it have been like this:

Just wait until 2014, bitcoin will be $1,000 + again.

Just wait until 2015, bitcoin will be $1,000 + again.

Just wait until 2016, bitcoin will be $1,000 + again.

I hope you are right, but it is humorous if you step back and look at the larger picture: if my predictions do not come true this year, maybe next!

1326  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: btc atm now in LA- North Hollywood on: August 26, 2015, 08:16:08 PM
Do you know what the mark up? Spot + 5%?

It's 8% buy, 5% sell
More details about limits and verification procedures for this ATM http://coinatmradar.com/bitcoin_atm/605/bitcoin-atm-bitaccess-los-angeles-the-bitcoin-spot/

Ouch, 8% buy is pretty rough! I suppose they need to make up for low volume with higher fees, but 8% premiums is not much of an argument against CC fees when that is supposedly one of Bitcoins strengths.
1327  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Experiment - Achieving consensus where there is disagreement on: August 26, 2015, 07:59:52 PM
did anyone vote anything other then 75% and isn't trolling?

why? please lets hear your thoughts.

I voted higher than 75% as I was thinking about bitcoin and think majority consent should be set to a higher standard for more serious discussions. While 75% may seem like a good majority I think too many people go with the crowd, so it might not represent their true feelings.

I know plenty of people even in real life elections are influenced by polls and vote for the candidate in the lead as they "Don't want to waste their vote on a losing candidate" which if they would step back they would realize their vote is wasted by not voting for who they feel would do the best job, regardless of outcome. Since so many people do this, their beliefs become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Thus why I think 75% is too low to represent a true consensus, as at least a third of that 75% are too easily influenced in their views. In other words I believe only a fraction of the majority really understand and have a deep commitment to their view, or a follow the herd mentality.

As far as to the accuracy of this poll, I feel along with the above statements, that there will simply be people to try and disrupt your poll for the fun of it (trolling).

I came here at the recommendation of a friend who believes this forum is still the main source of information for not only Bitcoin, but most Alt coins as well.

Obviusly webmaster didn't configured his httpd vhost for https. There is a diferent web than vanillacoin if you access through https.

Anyone else having trouble downloading the latest wallet? I click on the wallet links at http://vanillacoin.net/wallets.php and keep getting an error page.

Also, if I go to https://vanillacoin.net/ I end up on a page for Tealc's WebShop, is the site hacked?

huh... are you sure you're entering everything right and don't have any adware or anything?  Maybe try clearing your cookies, search vanillacoin on google, and then click the www.vanillacoin.net link

I get the same thing if I use https. That's strange, that can't be proper behavior right?

That is a possibility now that I have confirmed it is not just something on my end. Look's like this oversight might help give us another clue to John's true identity. Smiley

Looking at the google spreadsheet it seems under the calculation tab the payment address got moved down a couple of rows from the people they should be associated with, at least in my case it is. The payment address is still correct under the enrollment tab.

1334  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos. the reason ?? on: August 23, 2015, 01:06:56 AM
What's the problem here? He moved an altcoin discussion thread to altcoin discussion board.
Do you see a problem ? theymos should be careful not with their opinion but with them forum rules,Can not someone say bitcoin xt is an altcoin I would like to know if the majority adopted bitcoin xt what will happen to the forum probably the only bitcointalk visitors will be use this forum only for altcoin discussion..

The answer to your question was already linked in the reply above by unamis76, it is regarding reddit but it would apply to this forum as well:

Quote
/r/Bitcoin exists to serve Bitcoin. XT will, if/when its hardfork is activated, diverge from Bitcoin and create a separate network/currency. Therefore, it and services that support it should not be allowed on /r/Bitcoin. In the extremely unlikely event that the vast majority of the Bitcoin economy switches to XT and there is a strong perception that XT is the true Bitcoin, then the situation will flip and we should allow only submissions related to XT. In that case, the definition of "Bitcoin" will have changed. It doesn't make sense to support two incompatible networks/currencies -- there's only one Bitcoin, and /r/Bitcoin serves only Bitcoin.

So if the majority of people adopted bitcoin xt then that would "flip" the situation and would mean the "definition of 'Bitcoin' will have changed", which means the forum would then be talking about XT, which at that point in time would just be called Bitcoin.
1335  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoin Index Fund on: August 23, 2015, 12:25:06 AM
Yes, CoinoIndex (INDEX) has been available for trading on Poloniex for some time. https://poloniex.com/exchange#btc_index

The CoinoIndex tracks the top twenty alternative cryptocurrencies ranked by largest capitalization.

More information on the Altcoin Index Fund (Coinoindex) can be found at their website: http://coinoindex.com/ or also a brief overview can be found here: http://www.alternativecoin.com/altcoin-index-fund-coinoindex-now-available/

They also have a thread on this forum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1129646.0

Hello,

I think the Bitcoin addresses start with 3,is a multi signature Bitcoin address.
This type of address is used by escrows and business partners.

That is correct, per the wiki article linked by Lutpin:
Quote
Addresses can be created that require a combination of multiple private keys. Since these take advantage of newer features, they begin with the newer prefix of 3 instead of the older 1

1337  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Good websites to Invest My Bitcoins? on: August 22, 2015, 11:02:08 PM
You could invest your 0.1 BTC by depositing them on an exchange that allows you to lend them out, such as Poloniex. You won't get rich, but the current rates are ~0.1 - 0.2 % daily, which would work out to around 36.5-73% yearly. Of course this is simple interest and does not include compounding, so your actual return would be a bit higher.

I should also add that the rate can vary quite a bit over time, so while it is passive income in a sense, as you can set your offers to auto renewal, you would want to keep some eye on it as rates do change often. An recent example was with the Ethereum launch, interest rates were over 1% daily for awhile as speculators went long.

Bitfinex also allows lending, but except for USD their returns are somewhat lower than Poloniex.

As recently proposed by Core developer Sergio Lerner, is to hold onto the 1 megabyte limit, but speed up the block interval. If 1 megabyte blocks are found every five minutes instead of 10, that would allow for double the amount of transactions on the network while also decreasing confirmation times.

Under this model would we still have reward halvings every 210,000 blocks? If so, the coin distribution phase will be doubled where the last coin will be mined in ~50 years instead of ~100 years which could be very bad. We would have to reduce the rewards in half as well if blocks were found every 5 minutes.  To me that sounds much more drastic than lifting the blocksize.
There's also those miners that are not validating previous blocks because it takes 10 seconds away where they could be hashing. If we reduced the blocktime to 5 minutes, that will take an even larger percentage out of their hashing times where we can almost guarantee miners won't be validating newly found blocks.

These were also my thoughts when reading about Sergio's proposal. I think your last point about the miners not validating previous blocks nails the reason this proposal would be a bad idea square on the head. To me everyone seems to be ignoring this problem in that even with an increase in blocksize, what is the incentive to miners to fill up a block, as if they are worried in doing so they could end up with an orphan. I believe this is the worry of Chinese miners as they already have borderline network connectivity problems.
