141  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The KRAKEN rises, meaning Kraken vs Dragon vs Lizards! on: June 17, 2022, 06:28:00 AM
It was a Soros coup that actually won (the Presidency).
Soros understood how popular Trump was. That's why he promoted the Jan. 6 thing, just to tarnish Trump's good name.

You don't have to be Soros to understand how popular Trump was. Everyone knows how popular Trump was, he won 232 electoral college votes, so he's definitely fairly popular. No-one is disputing that.
I'd dispute the 'good name' part, though. Unless you mean good in terms of British slang, where I'd agree.

Also if Soros is behind this whole thing, why can't the Kraken find him? Is it because the Kraken lives in the ocean, and Soros (as far as we can determine) lives on dry land? Surely there's some river or canal or something that the Kraken can use to work his way inland? And surely Soros lives for part of the year on a mega-yacht, like all billionnaires? This shouldn't be difficult.

lizard people

But are they working with the Kraken, the Dragon, or the Soros?

When Kyrgios wants to play he can be the best player in the world. But when his mind goes black he will lose instantly and not care about anymore in the match. This happened in his last loss when he lost the first set and didnt care anymore for second against Murray

I have the same feeling like you. When he is the good mood, he can win against the best players in the world but sometimes he just doesn't care. I like to watch him, it is always very entertaining, but betting on Kyrgios is always dangerous as you never know in what mood he is.

Definitely true. With Krygios it is probably better betting on single matches... it's unlikely he'll maintain his mental attitude for a whole tournament, and he often falls apart playing top players when they start to put him under a bit of pressure. His unpredictability makes him exciting, but for betting he's a lot of trouble.

I'm still going to go for a surprise bet anyway for the winner and I'm going to wait for this for 10 more days. The name that is in my mind for now is Tsitsipas Stefanos

Personally Tsitsipas is one I'd stay away from. He'll be a high seed, so probably not very good odds... but his recent performances haven't been as good as his ranking. His record at Wimbledon is his worst of all the slams, and he's only once got past the first round there. He has the ability to do well because he's a great player, but I don't think his recent form or his Wimbledon record work in his favour.
144  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: June 15, 2022, 03:39:22 PM
1. Brazil
2. Spain
3. Argentina

We're still some way out from the tournament, but already I'd probably amend my forecast from a couple of months ago. I think Argentina look stronger than Brazil at the moment, and Messi is back on fire after that 5-goals-in-a-single-game performance recently. I'm also tempted to put Germany up there, they may be under-dogs, but their team is improving all the time and they are always a threat in big tournaments.

Revised prediction:

1. Argentina
2. Brazil
3. Germany

... and I will likely be back here to completely change it again in a few months' time Cheesy
145  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - UEFA Qualifiers on: June 15, 2022, 03:33:49 PM
Interesting mix now we have for the finals in Qatar. Will soon be time to share all early outright!

Wonder what the odds on England will be. A lot of people were considering them amongst the favourites (not outright favourite, but up there with the top teams). However England have had a pretty disastrous couple of weeks, culminating in that astonishingly bad 0-4 home defeat to Hungary the other day. Perhaps this might cause England to be under-rated for the tournament? They still have strong players and a favourable draw... the potential is there if not (currently) the confidence. A couple of goals and a morale-boosting win at the start of the WC could transform them.
146  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Tennis League All Thread on: June 15, 2022, 09:00:33 AM
Berrettini who is growing and growing into the grass court season, definitely one to watch
along with Cilic who plays Bublik tomorrow.

Draper plays Ruusuvuori tomorrow, the commentators on Amazon Prime recon it will be
a very close match there as Ruusuvuori is kind of under rated.

Berrettini definitely has a chance at Wimbledon, but he's fourth favourite, so I'm not sure there's a lot of betting opportunity.
I think there's a danger with Draper after his eye-catching win the other day that the press will start to get carried away and hyping him massively. There may be good opportunities to bet on him at Wimbledon depending on the draw, but this is only for so long as he continues to fly under the radar. It might be better for Wimbledon betting if Draper loses against Ruusuvuori, to lower his profile a bit and dampen expectations.

When anyone believes that a science theory is correct, he has a religion going for himself in that theory... because he doesn't really know it. It's still a theory, a strong educated guess. So we see that ultimately science is based on religion of what people believe, because nobody knows enough about the basics of everything to know what's really going on in science.
Science isn't religion. Consider science to be a synonym for reason and logic.

The scientific method is an empirical method of acquiring knowledge that has characterized the development of science since at least the 17th century (with notable practitioners in previous centuries). It involves careful observation, applying rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation. It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; experimental and measurement-based testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings.
Compare this with religion, which is basically: 'Hey guys, there's this book that some unknown people wrote a couple of thousand years ago, let's believe this instead of facts and stuff!'

nobody really knows what the water, the salt, the electrodes, and the electricity really are basically.
Science has a very detailed understanding of water, look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water
Whereas religion thinks that water is just wet stuff that you can drink, or if you're one particular special guy, you can sometimes walk on.

God created the Heavens and the Earth. Lots of science in that.
I can't see any. To me, it looks like an isolated assertion, unsupported by logic or evidence.

we only need look at the Bible to see that
...to see that people are willing to blindly follow their leaders and believe something that was written down a couple of thousand years ago, despite it having no factual basis, despite no evidence being found even though they've spent two thousand years trying. Religion is simply an ancient method of social control.

Are you trying to say that the videos of the cops ushering the Jan. 6 protesters in, are all fake?

Cool

No, I'm not mentioning it, because it's irrelevant. Police are people. I'd expect some police to want to defend the nation, and some to want the attempted coup to succeed. Just like some police enjoy murdering black people, and some don't. The allegiance of individual police officers one way or the other says nothing, it does not somehow disprove that it was an attempted coup.

-snip

I don't think Isner will get too far.

agree for Isner that it is a long shot by far, and he is old
but, I am practiacally brainstorming whom to put money on, to win the tournament

it is easiest to play Djokovic, but reward is too low
Murray is out from Queens, so basically two weeks are too much for him

still, Norrie losing Dimitrov made me to think about someone else than him, and all are above 10, so all are long shots

Yeah, it's difficult. Two long-shots (at around 80) who might be worth a look are maybe:
Dan Evans, he's British, and has the game to fight with most players... and will be seeded, so will avoid the big players in the first couple of rounds.
Sebastian Korda is up-and-coming and looks quite good on grass, his best ever slam performance was R4 at last year's Wimbledon.

I'm not sure about either of them winning the tournament, but they might be under-rated.

Another outsider (at 100) is Jack Draper, another Brit (20yo), who beat Taylor Fritz pretty comprehensively on grass the other day.
150  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Tennis League All Thread on: June 14, 2022, 11:20:48 AM
it is a specific to play on grass, and good serve can take you to finals, maybe Isner can do it? statistics are not that important on Wimbledon, and we did not see top players so far on grass, first match will be an issue for all of them

I don't think Isner will get too far. Yes his serve is a potent weapon on grass, but it's not enough. When he comes up against someone good, they can usually win enough points on his serve to take the match, and their own serve is usually untroubled.

Here's Isner's full slam record, only once past 3R at Wimbledon. Of course some of that is due to being tired after ridiculously long matches (e.g. the infamous 6–4, 3–6, 6–7(7–9), 7–6(7–3), 70–68 match vs Mahut in 2010)... but he just doesn't have enough beyond his big serve to progress far.

151  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Tennis League All Thread on: June 14, 2022, 08:48:09 AM
What are the odds on Cilic? I have a feeling he will go far this season and if he is on opposite site of Djoković I fully expect him to reach final. Maybe a bit optimistic prediction but there isn't that much good grass players left in the draw. We did not see Djoko on grass this season and Berettini did not look as sharp as last season even though he won the title.

Cilic seems to be similar odds to Murray, with around 10 players being seen as more likely to win. So he's probably under-rated, I'd have him in my top 5 for sure. Cilic certainly has a good chance, and I'd say a better chance than Murray. As you say, a lot depends on the draw, he could end up in the same part as Djokovic, which would be a tough match and leave him tired if he won, and so might make his next round game tough. Or he could end up on the other side and have an easy route through to the final.

No-one's really talking about Alcaraz, he is a bit of an unknown and could do well... but he is down as the second favourite, so it wouldn't exactly surprise anyone.

it would be a shock to see Murray win over Djokovic in this conditions, nevertheless his good form, and Djokovic not being at his best lately

Yeah, you'd still favour Djokovic. I was just making the point really that a refreshed Murray winning a one-off match against Djokovic is probably more likely than Murray winning 7 consecutive best-of-5-set matches within a fortnight.

when He injected the soul into that body.
I can understand that religious people have a different viewpoint to those who follow science, and don't see any evidence for 'souls'. I disagree with you, but understand how you feel that way. However...

we only need look at the Bible to see that way back at the beginning, God:
1. commanded that people multiply on the earth;
2. set up laws that made killing a person in the tummy of a pregnant woman to be murder.
Back in the beginning, though, didn't God also endorse mass murder, rape and general mayhem? The OT is full of that stuff. I don't think this guy should be held up as a role model for ethical behaviour.

Proving once again that an unborn child is, in fact, a child and not just a clump of cells

Yes, an unborn child is an unborn child.

But the image below doesn't show an unborn child. A 'child' emerges slowly, during the process. There is no child at the start, there is a child at the end.
But just because there is no definite instant of transition, we can't simply extrapolate backwards and say it's a child at the end, therefore it's a child all the way through... that would be as absurd as saying it's not a child at the beginning, therefore it's not a child at the end either.

I have absolutely no idea. Are you switching to a different mythical beast because the kraken was a no-show?

The Dragon has risen

155  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "I do not get involved in politics, but then complaint if things do not go well" on: June 13, 2022, 01:31:45 PM
Your friend is right, however, being apolitical or flat out refusing to get into it could also be a sort of political activity where a person is voicing his/her dissapointment with the choices that are presented. So I do think you can chose not to get involved and still have the right to complain.

You're making it sound as if it's someone's (government's? LOL) responsibility to present lemmings with choices. No. People create the choices, people vote, people make them accountable.

And yes, they have the right to complain regardless of the above, but if they complain without doing anything then it's just lemmings complaining with no purpose or consequence.

Yes. If you don't vote and you're never going to vote, then a politician will see you as irrelevant. You can complain all you like, but if it has zero effect on elections, you don't matter.
Not voting is also an easy way out of making an unpalatable choice. If you don't like any of the candidates, then you must certainly dislike some more than others. There's a case to be made for holding your nose and voting for the least bad option. At least that way you can have an influence.

Congratulations to Redbull. Now we can say they are champions. I wouldn't be surprised if Ferrari loses the team 2nd place to Mercedes. Leclerc is having bad luck. They couldn't solve this problem, it's a shame for Leclerc. It looks like Verstappen will easily win his second title at this rate. Ferrari stumbles on updates. They have fast vehicles but they are not durable. Speed doesn't always pay off. The price of mistakes is losing the championship.

Yes:
Ferrari have a fast car.
Mercedes have a reliable car.
Red Bull have a fast and reliable car.

It does look increasingly like Verstappen will win the title. Ferrari are losing points at an incredible rate. Merc are gaining point by at least finishing the races, but have zero chance of catching RB.
It must be difficult being Leclerc at the moment, or even Sainz who has certainly had his own share of bad luck.
157  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [POLL] Shutting down the Global Economy to fight covid a good idea? on: June 13, 2022, 12:27:33 PM
Now that economies are opening back up and trying to return to normal with insane inflation levels, the vaccine was found to be 1% effective, the latest variant found to be non-lethal with a stronger immune response than the vaccine, and the bill for all of this is in at around $12,500,000,000,000, was shutting down the global economy to fight the flu a good idea?  Do you feel like you were safer as a result of the policies put in place?  Do you think this is how we should handle virus outbreaks in the future?  Do you think we are better off as a species now as a result of these actions?  Do you think the government's inability to get everyone vaccinated is part of the reason behind this push to destroy the second amendment?

I'm not sure where the 1% effective data comes from, please can you provide a source? Everything I've found suggests it is hugely effective.

As for whether governments could have handled this better, certainly. In my own country (the UK), it was perfectly evident as soon as outbreaks started in Italy and Spain that it would make its way over here. The biggest mistake the government made was to keep the borders open too long... if you wait until something is a problem, then it's too late to achieve the best outcome. You need to close borders beforehand. That way the internal economy at least can continue.

Mane's decision to leave Liverpool seems certain, so it looks like Mane will move to another team this year. And I'm sure Liverpool don't want
Mane to leave Liverpool for free next season, so Liverpool will definitely sell Mane this year. The latest news that Liverpool are still rejecting
the offer given by Bayern, it is likely because Liverpool have not yet found a replacement for Mane. But having managed to get Darwin Nunez,
I'm sure Liverpool will not impose too high a price for Sadio Mane.

Regarding Mohamed Salah, it looks like Liverpool will not let Salah move to another team, although until now there has been no contract
extension agreement, but I believe before the contract expires next season, Liverpool will extend Salah's contract. After all, Salah still wants
to play longer with Liverpool, so it's not like Mane, Salah decided to stay at Liverpool. With the arrival of Darwin Nunez will indeed strengthen
Liverpool's front line, moreover, Nunez's performance is also extraordinary with Benfica. So I hope Nunez can immediately adapt to Liverpool,
and help Liverpool to win the EPL trophy and the Champions League next season.

I suppose if the player isn't going to command much of a fee though, why not just keep them until their contract expires? They leave for free, but you get another year's worth of performance out of them.

I think Liverpool will still want a large fee, and securing Nunez actually strengthens their hand against Bayern. They know that Bayern are desperate for a striker with Lewandowski leaving, whereas Liverpool, having already secured Nunez, no longer have that same desperation.
159  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "I do not get involved in politics, but then complaint if things do not go well" on: June 13, 2022, 10:54:56 AM
A friend of mine once told me "if you do not do politics, they will do politics to you". Politics are mostly distasteful - arguments, propaganda, politicians creating problems for their own gain and trying to radicalise people to their side. There is probably nothing clean anywhere in the political arena.

However, as disgusting as they are, the option of not getting involved does not really work. You need to defend your interests and make sure that the politicians of your country know that you are watching and that you will hold the to account.

Yes, this is true. I'd also add that a lot of people see democracy purely as a right, when really it's also a responsibility.

If you are voting simply because you can, and have no real knowledge of what you are voting for, because you haven't really looked into it beyond reading a few breathless headlines and hearing a few catchphrases, then really you shouldn't vote.
It's your responsibility as a voter to make sure you are fully informed and that you have reached your own decisions based on the evidence.

it seems that Murray has the last say in the second set and make a great comeback. But it seems he was dominated by Berrettini in the 3rd. I agree, this is something that we didn't expect from Murray

I don't know that it's unexpected. I've been talking about this issue on and off for more than a year, and a few times this last week. A fully-fit and refreshed Murray is a match for almost anyone. But he struggles to recover between matches. He even said as much in his post-match interview yesterday (below). This is why I can't see him winning Wimbledon. I mean, if he drew Djokovic in the first round, it wouldn't be a massive shock to see Murray win that match... and I think this would be easier for him than to beat a bunch of random top 50 players 7 times consecutively in a fortnight over best-of-5-sets.

As soon as Murray had levelled, though, the match was to all intents finished. After an error-strewn opening service game, Murray immediately called the trainer. He was unable to serve at full pace and then in the middle of his service game at 2-4 he underwent another medical timeout. Against one of the biggest servers in the world, a hobbled Murray fought but was unable to make any further impression.
Afterwards, Murray said it was a left ab injury that he sustained in the third set while serving, rather than a left hip injury as initially reported: “It’s a really long time [since] I have played nine matches in 14 days,” said Murray, who also played in Surbiton last week. “I also played Thursday through Saturday last week and then Thursday through to Sunday here. So it is probably normal that I would feel some stuff in my body but I don’t really know the severity of it. I’ll need to get it checked out. Hopefully it is all right.”
