1481  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] Avalon Lancelot on: February 09, 2013, 05:48:21 PM
Want to buy one working Lancelot, original documentation & accessories.
1482  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Just lost 190 bitcoins through Mt. Gox on: February 09, 2013, 04:59:12 AM
MtGox really should increase their security policy. Since they are so crucial to the Bitcoin economy I consider them as one of the greatest vulnerabilities of the whole system.

Two-factor authentication should be required for every withdrawal over 1000 USD in 24 hours or the equivalent in BTC. Also, like the Blockchain wallet, they should add sms authentication. They should mail you a warning whenever someone logs in from a previously unused IP-adress and withdrawals should be restricted from this address for 24 hours.

For now I would recommend using Blockchain to store your Bitcoins. A paper wallet is fine as well, though slightly more inconvenient.

I was looking over my MtGox account, and I don't see how to turn on 2 factor authentication.  Can someone walk through the process really slowly?
1483  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Just lost 190 bitcoins through Mt. Gox on: February 09, 2013, 02:49:12 AM
This really sucks. It is to hard to use, get, trust, and secure bitcoin transactions. Another black eye for bitcoin.

No, it's not a black eye for Bitcoin at all. This had absolutely nothing to do with Bitcoin, neither the protocol nor the client.

It kinda is. Look at asic ppl wanting a refund. Cc payers got it. Bitcoin users just cry.
It might not be the client or protocol... But it is def bitcoin's irreversible nature. A victim has no chance in the world to figure out where their money went. That is a big problem for most people.

I am surprised no one mentioned inside job. An employee just slowly milks an account here and there for profit.

Isn't there a trail for the address the money went to?
1484  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: addr.txt on: February 08, 2013, 03:33:53 PM
Shouldn't your switch be onlynet="IPv6"?

Dia

I checked this.  Bitcoin-qt will not start if the quotes are included.

1485  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 07, 2013, 07:14:02 PM
Chip's power consumption is <6.6W/Ghs

ATX power loses(82%), DC/DC power loses(87%), Fan(5~20w), etc…

So…

650W * 0.82 * 0.87 - 20W = 443W, About right.

This is a business opportunity to make a high efficiency wall to dc converter.
Making a very focused product, well specified load and voltage, can allow the efficiency to be much higher.

1486  Bitcoin / Hardware / Request clarification on Trade in for 2nd owner Avalon FPGA on: February 07, 2013, 06:34:12 PM
I respectfully request clarification from Avalon whether I can trade in an FPGA unit for an ASIC purchase if I am the 2nd owner.

1487  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: February 07, 2013, 04:11:50 PM
So wtf is going on?
Here it says "Product not in stock"
Here it has the batch#1 price and says "There are no products matching the selection."
And here was the trade in option and now it is gone...Huh

Please BitSyncom post some updates on your scam,... I meant product! Smiley

If you do believe it is a scam, I will buy your unit.  Post your transaction number, I'll gather matching Bitcoin.

I'm not sure if the parameters are supposed to be quoted or not.  I do like to be careful about such things, so after I get things minimally working I will read through from the beginning again.

However, it does work without the quotes.  I have only IPv6 addresses in debug.log.

It seems that IPv6 is pretty well established in the Bitcoin world.
1489  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Icarus on: February 06, 2013, 11:21:56 PM
I have BTC https://blockchain.info/address/1AbyGdzm4wg6nX5upHXSJ3y26uEMaPUukqand and want a working Icarus with all of its ancillary stuff.

Let the fun begin.

You probably need to correct the url you gave above - blockchain says its not a valid address...

Let's try again.
I can hand write HTML.  It doesn't help here.

1491  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Reduced final-state blk0001.dat (with pruned index) on: February 06, 2013, 04:39:01 PM
Perhaps relevant to your interests:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=130066.msg1400898#msg1400898

blk0002.dat is height 210964.

I am new, and reading and assimilating...

I have run bitcoin-qt for a week, and it is now synchronized through block 219926.

I have three files,
blk0001.dat 2,097,361,271 bytes,
blk0002.dat 2,097,295,438 bytes, and
blk0003.dat 1,249,842,320 bytes.

Are these three files the same for everyone?  Or a crisper question might be, are blk001.dat and blk002.dat the same for everyone who is synchronized?

1492  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / addr.txt on: February 06, 2013, 04:25:12 PM
I started the Satoshi client, bitcoin-qt.  The file bitcoin.conf contains the line onlynet=IPv6.

It ran for almost a week, and as of this morning it is synchronized.  This is significantly longer than the times I am hearing from other people.

I am running XP (SP3)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 3.50 GB of RAM

What I would like to do next is to use addr.txt to pre-load some peer addresses.

I can write my own code to harvest addresses from debug.log and stuff them into mySQL, and with more time I can read the source and read peers.dat, but it seems that some of the developers would already be able to make addr.txt.  Actually, it seems that bitcoin-qt should be able to produce this file, as a symmetric operation to being able to read it.

Can I get a copy of a windows binary (preferred) or a pointer to the source for Ubuntu 12.04 (less preferred)

Thanks.
1493  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Lancelot on: February 06, 2013, 04:15:53 AM

It could deter potential bidders from bidding simply because they're not prepared to crack open their cold wallets during the bidding process. I must admit that this is quite a novel way of submitting bids, but due to the 'fees' involved it could be counterproductive.

I had to think a while to figure out what I think cold wallets are.  That is a point that I did not think of.  What I do is to have two wallets, one is very accessible, but doesn't have much in it.  The other has all the big money in it, and is treated with much more ritual.

I am worried about the turning off potential sellers, and it is unexpected for a seller to put up money to be able to sell.  This will be too weird for a lot of people before the idea catches on.  It may even be fatal.  I hope not.

1494  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Lancelot on: February 06, 2013, 04:08:52 AM
yes i did read it afterwards, the question remains: why dont u send the coins back if auctioning is done?
it bugs me cause bidding on an auction dosnt cost you anything, only if you win the auction.
if you want to keep em as "fees", then pls edit ur OP accordingly Smiley

I have edited the original language.

I attended auctions regularly in Texas for several years.
It does occasionally happen that there is a registration fee.
It often happens that there is a letter of credit required from a bank.
At almost every auction there is some sort of ruckus at the checkout table.

I simply wrote the procedure that I thought mimicked the actual auctions that I have attended.

The registration fee is embodied in the procedure I have set up.  This is overloading the additional use as the bid indicator, and overloading is usually bad coding practice, but there you are.
A letter of credit indicates that the funds are available.  I have paid into a reserved address to show that, for the moment, I have the funds.  These funds have been publicly and significantly restricted.  A letter of credit also does some other things that are not captured in my procedure.
The removal of my funds from currency trading costs me more than the fee or escrow that the bidders are paying.  This merits respect.

The no-return policy comes out of a blend of the following two things.  1)I don't feel a need to have a lot of different bids from the same person.  It bugs me on eBay when I see the same person re-bidding over and over.  I don't like to read it in the summary, and 2) I sure don't want to spend a hour doing tedious returns for inconsequential amounts of money.  It is an opportunity for mistakes and drama.  I think they should just bid what they want.  I'd be happy with an auction with the winning bid and no other.

1495  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Lancelot on: February 05, 2013, 11:15:08 PM
Just bid here. The method you use is clunky and unfair to the bidders.

It does feel clunky, doesn't it.  However ... it is a technical test run of a process for a GUI based auction tool.

Without requiring additional overhead, it is self documenting, transparent, irrevocable, archived, and uses the strengths of BTC.

In addition, the bidder's BTC pay address can be unique for this auction, and the bidder can transfer the bid funds through a mixer and remain anonymous.  Comments can be added to the bid payments.

Your participation in this auction will permanently identify you as a participant in the event that any auction software does materialize.

This method documents that I have 13.9710038 BTC on hand, in the account BTC address for the auction.

Perhaps you would like to give your  2¢ worth regarding the amount of the fee.  I wonder what rate you would accept.  Perhaps 0.001 (2¢), or 0.000 1, or 0.000 01.  We can survey and vote here and now.  Make a payment to 1AjRvwoChLFY7m76Yx6gxeU39gakrEDT8o in the amount of BTC that corresponds to the fraction that you would like to receive on any auctions where you are the buyer.

Nothing stops discussion of the bid amounts or any other drama between participants in this thread.

I am curious how many call-outs that the receipt of 2¢ is a scam will come forward.
so this will be a scam auction software? why not sending back the failed bids? do you want to call this "fees"?

Are you still thinking that I am going to hold onto 15 BTC per bidder, as you did in your first post?  That is not what my post says, and I invite you to read it again, especially this next part.
Quote
To place bid, pay 0.01 X your price to 1PRLQuMjk7rR2zW1X3X8kCWHofmkStGzT4
For example, to bid 15 BTC, pay 0.15 BTC ($3.00 or so)

If I call these "fees" will you stop calling the process a scam?

It seems pretty clear that this bugs you, but I don't understand why.  Nothing is hidden.  Everything has a structural purpose.  The amounts of money involved are not profitable to me and they are not burdensome to you.  This format makes it easy to automate the process.

1496  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: February 05, 2013, 07:50:20 PM
So how many people pre-ordered a batch #2 and probably loses their money?

Well you mean because of difficulty increasing enough to make the machines never break even or turn a profit long term?

It's not a scam. The fact that 2 or 3 exist is proof enough, if they can build a few they can build hundreds, or thousands. The chinese are masters of reproduction.
The real question is, is Avalon team financially sound enough to make it happen and turn a profit somehow to keep the investors and customers happy? If they wanted to run a full scam they wouldn't make batches, it would be open season and they'd just take orders they couldn't fullfill for months like BFL has done.

Right now they have a goose than can lay golden eggs, they just need to get them out the door faster. And they need to talk more. If it's one thing BFL does better its communication, even if its trolling and blowing smoke up peoples asses.

Chinese don`t like communication, only like show the things they do. Grin

sorry for my english.

I have some Chinese students in my classes.  Everything I am hearing seems to ring true.

pure scam, can u tag em accordingly mods? Smiley
?
if someone bids 14 BTC and i bid 15 BTC, the other guy just lost 14 BTC to you, serious scam...

I think the process is pretty good and fair to everyone.  If not, please help me see how it is not good, from either side.

Walk through it again for me.  I think the winning bid in your scenario is 14 BTC, and that you would pay 0.15 BTC in bid placement fees.

1499  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB In Hand Avalon Asic on: February 05, 2013, 09:20:04 AM
Transaction would go something like this:

1) Buyer shows up
2) Seller shows up
3) Both exchange handshakes and oddly suspicious looks
4) Buyer demands to see the hardware
5) Seller presents hardware
6) Seller gets a baseball bat to the head when he least suspects it
7) "Buyer" and accomplice walk away
Cool Profit!
