1981  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Thomas Edison predicted the need for Bitcoin... kind of. on: December 07, 2013, 03:38:49 AM
Oh, click to pause it. Thank god.. I was about to start wondering if I could make it through the whole thing.

Did I mention this video is long?

I'm going to continue it in a bit!

EDIT: Annnndd.. I'm at the end and realize it is for sure selling something. LOL. At least it was somewhat of a good video on Bitcoin at first. I liked how it tied Bitcoin into history at the start of it. I never realized Thomas Edison was such a proponent for Bitcoin well before it was ever started. Smiley
1982  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Thomas Edison predicted the need for Bitcoin... kind of. (infomercial) on: December 07, 2013, 03:30:54 AM
Note.. this is a very long video and you cannot pause it. Only watch it if you have a lot of time.

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere.

http://moneymorning.com/ext/bitcoin/videos/video-bitcoin.php?src=gmail&ad=cpa&pub_id=401328

This is a good video to send to people that are new to Bitcoin. It is quite long winded, but informative for new users too learn all about it. Smiley

I'm not sure if they're trying to sell something or what.. I'm still watching it. However, they are doing a good job of explaining Bitcoin thus far.
1983  Economy / Collectibles / Re: CryptoVest Physical Litecoins (Metal Alloy)- Accepting orders on: December 07, 2013, 01:49:11 AM
Does anyone have recommendations for coin holders for these?  I'm going to give some away, and I don't want to pass them out naked.
I'd try something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-DIRECT-FIT-COIN-CAPSULES-PLASTIC-HOLDER-ONE-OUNCE-SILVER-ROUNDS-39MM-/130867893295?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e7855942f

or these look nicer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/25-Airtite-Coin-Capsules-Holders-with-White-Rings-for-1oz-Silver-Rounds-39mm-/141082405076?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20d92aa8d4

Perhaps I should buy some and offer them for sale in the store. Thanks for your order. Smiley
1984  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Innovative Alternative Crypto Currencies on: December 07, 2013, 01:08:54 AM
I added Peercoin for their work on PoS. I will add the first merge mined Scrypt coin USC & Namecoin as well.

It is up to me who makes it on the list and who doesn't, but thank you all for your suggestions. I will look into them when I have time. I'm on the fence whether to add coins that just change the hashing algorithms on the list.. this includes YAC, Quark, SecureCoin, et al. PrimeCoin also did this, but its PoW solves real life math problems to contribute something to society. If you want one of these added, please explain to me how it was innovative. I honestly haven't had much time to compare them. Smiley

Sorry if I take a long time adding a coin to the list.. just because I don't add it now, doesn't mean I won't add it later. I might reassess it at a later date, or perhaps I just don't have time to look it through. To help me in that regards, please post a description of the coin you're proposing, links to its thread/website, etc... it will help me out a lot. If you have any other links for coins already in the OP, please share them and I will add them (or tell me if a link is broken).
1985  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Quark the new FTC on: December 07, 2013, 12:27:02 AM
+1

What's going to happen once all the quarks are mined?  Won't the miners stop mining therefore halting the blockchain and transfer of coins?

LOL i mean quark pretty much shot itself in the foot. Grin

It never stops being mined. Apparently someone can't read.

The reward will drop dramatically. It means that to keep the network secure from a botnet you must keep miners mining. How ?
Nobody will keep mining if the electricity cost will be higher than the reward.
And even if the reward will be higher than cost it will be far lower than what miners can get from mining other altcoins.
That's why Satoshi came up with a halving idea over long periods of time, to allow transactions to grow in numbers and replace the block rewards, and it was a good one.

1. Anyone with an opposing view point is automatically a hater, or has a huge stash of some other coin (which I don't.)

2. The thread title is ironic because you guys all sound like the FTC guys right up until they got dumped on, and they all slithered away to their own forums. I understand Quark is not Feathercoin. Quark was (somewhat) innovative in using multiple random hashing algorithms (other coins have used similar methods before Quark), but the economic model was poorly thought out IMO. Only the people that mine in the first 6 months are going to be the ones trying to support and develop this coin. Bitcoin and Litecoin are popular because of their fair release and slow reduction in block reward.

Lets say you hear about Scrypt mining 6 months after the release of Quark coin and you're looking at what you want to mine. If you decided to mine Quark coin, even with 100% of the network hash rate, it would take you 247 YEARS to mine what you could of mined with the first 6 MONTHS of 100% the hash rate (note: the 1million/0.5% anually seems off, is it on a logarithmic or lineal scale?)... Who in the heck is going to sign up for that? Good luck protecting your network from botnets... they have a lot of CPU power.. less so GPU power. Custom hardware like ASICs are a good thing, because they force Botnets out.
1986  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [VMC] Official Virtual Mining Corporation Discussion on: December 07, 2013, 12:24:12 AM
I believe the shipping thread was a hoax. Maybe just a stock holder that wanted to pump prices while cashing out... I have not received any shipping information. Perhaps we should start a list on another thread.. I am something like #5xx.

I'd also like to point our kslaughters last direct post directly to me.. even if they are a bit late (which they aren't until January 1.) For now I am taking him at his word on this:

To: kslaughter / whomever it may concern

ROI is looking quite dismal. Is there any chance the delivered equipment will run faster than advertised? Or is there any other way you can make it up to your customers somehow by delivering extra units or something? I spent over $10,000 with you guys and would appreciate it if you allow me to at least break even on my purchase. If not, do not expect me to be a repeat customer.

Thanks for your time,

Ch

This is very important to us.  This is our moto: "If You Make Your Customers Successful, You Will Be Successful".  Now that being said we have no control over the difficulty, so we are working on R & D to make our machines run faster.  Now, here is our promise to our customers, if at anytime before we ship the machine to our customer and the machine will not return a positive ROI within the first year, we will at their option refund 100% of the purchase price of the machine.
1987  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Quark the new FTC on: December 06, 2013, 11:19:28 AM
This is why Quark is a scam coin:

"* 2048 QRK per block (halving every 60480 blocks ~ 3 weeks)
* Block reward will never drop below 1 QRK
* Total of 247 million QRK will be mined in ~ 6 months, after that ~ 1 million QRK p.a. (~ 0.5% p.a inflation)"

.... 247 million mined in the first 6 months.  Roll Eyes

It's a shame they had to ruin a good idea with an unfair 6 month instamine.
1988  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Innovative Alternative Crypto Currencies on: December 06, 2013, 08:25:17 AM
This list is really useful in filtering out useless clones. Thanks!

Yes, that is the point. No problem! Smiley

PPCoin POS is innovative since the past to present and future

I've been thinking about adding Peer Coin. I agree PoS was innovative, I wish more new coins would implement it and save some electricity!

I don't mean for this list to be the "end all be all" list of innovative alt coins.. I hardly have time to update it as is. Feel free to make suggestions, or even write up a small description of the coin you suggest to make my job easier. Smiley

1990  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Building the Next Generation of Crypto-Currency (developers required) on: December 06, 2013, 05:41:05 AM
Is this project still under development? No updates since August 27, 2013 Cry

I gave up on trying to form a team of developers and instead set up a bounty:

[BOUNTY] $20,000 Mini-Blockchain Implementation

I heard rumors that some people were working on an implementation but the bounty is still unclaimed so far.

Thanks for the update! I'm glad to see you made a bounty for this, how selfless of you. I hope someone comes through and claims this bounty. Block chain bloat is something I think will become a problem in the future.
1991  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [LTC] Changing the litecoin Proof of Work function to avoid ASIC mining? on: December 06, 2013, 05:31:29 AM
Also.. any poll held on this is going to be pretty biased IMO because of the number of GPU miners that frequent this subforum. Of course most of them will vote Yes.

As far as a PoW that will be more ASIC resistant. What about Momentum PoW.. what Protoshares is using: http://invictus-innovations.com/s/MomentumProofOfWork.pdf

EDIT: After thinking about if for a bit, the Momentum PoW would not work as it would effectively cut out current GPU miners. Any change of the PoW must allow everyone that is already participating in mining Litecoin to continue to do so.

I admit gmaxwell, there very may well be a way to make a coin ASIC proof, but I'm not really sure how it could be done.
1992  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Innovative Alternative Crypto Currencies on: December 06, 2013, 05:29:22 AM
I updated all coins in the OP just now. I will be adding some new coins tonight as well.

Cheers,

Ch

EDIT: I updated the update Smiley

It seems the mini-block chain project is still going along, there is a bounty thread here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=286536.0
1993  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2 ("Netcoin"): A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: December 06, 2013, 05:11:25 AM
Lots of attention and potential. Can we expect an announcement from taco soon?

I'm hoping I won't be posting in this thread again except to announce that options to crowdfund will be available through trusted partners here on bitcointalk.

Sorry, but for the next while until launch I think there will be a lot of radio silence from me.

I'm looking forward to next year.

I'm going through and updating my list of innovative ALTs to be on the look out for. I'm glad to see this is still under development! Some of the projects I've been checking in on have seemed to have died. Sad

Good job Taco, keep the dream alive, and good luck on the crowdfunding!

No updates since August 11, 2013.  Angry
1996  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [LTC] Changing the litecoin Proof of Work function to avoid ASIC mining? on: December 06, 2013, 04:45:05 AM
My vote is on NO.

For the most secure network possible, ASICs are needed. Nothing is ASIC proof, changing the PoW is just delaying the inevitable. ASICs will come to Litecoin if they are economically feasible, no matter what PoW is implemented.

Not to mention the electricity that will be saved is a good thing for planet Earth! Grin

GPUs are incredibly inefficient compared to ASICs and waste a lot of electricity.

If ASIC uses 1% of the electricity as a gpu people will just use 100times as many... saves nothing.

now PoS could be a solution to the resources thing.

You have a point. PoS is the only solution to energy savings thus far I agree. I will retract the statement about energy efficiency. Smiley

I think my first point though is very valid.

1998  Economy / Collectibles / Re: CryptoVest Physical Litecoins (Metal Alloy)- Accepting orders on: December 06, 2013, 04:06:21 AM
I got my coins in the mail today.  They look really nice.  They are a little larger than I expected from the pictures. which isn't bad at all.  I like the feel.  I wish the hologram had an id number of some sort on it so I could store each coins address along with the number in case I wanted to give it to somebody and show them the value.  (in addition to general record keeping)  I'm also tempted to load more than 1 LTC on these, but without any numbers on them, I'd be afraid I'd lose track of which one is which.  (maybe that's intentional)  I also would really like higher denominations.  Even with the increase in value of litecoins, 1 LTC is not very much.  Maybe it will be some day, but it seems like 10 LTC coins would be closer to the sweet spot for me.

Good norman, thanks for the review & the suggestions! I admit if I could go back and do a couple things differently, I would. This is a learning experience for me so all suggestions are much appreciated.

I have some holograms with windows of the same design, and am planning on using them on the 1000 loaded coins of the same design. I wanted them to be easily distinguishable from unloaded/customer assembled coins. Along with having the holograms with windows, I am developing different tamper evident techniques in an effort to thwart the hypodermic needle attack (and by coincidence, potentially help against other attacks as well.) I plan on basically combining every tamper evident method I can think of- using more than holograms to protect the private keys. Even still I'm sure as new technologies are developed these tamper evident techniques will be broken as well. But, I think in the near term future they will be fairly secure.

With current regulatory issues, I'm not sure I will even be able to make the loaded coins. They might end up being sold unloaded, but with windows and extra security features. I'm not really sure and I'm waiting to see how that plays out. I feel like what I'm doing now by selling unloaded coins with no precious metals is within the law and not considered money transmission. Selling loaded coins might put me on the other side of that fine line of regulatory status. We shall see...

Thanks for your order norman!

Not to defend fontas, but that is definitely not him talking.  There are a bunch of fontas copies on twitter and one of them speaks shitty english as well.  This is fake.  Fontas is articulate.

I apologize, I will remove the link to the image.
