2281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is no anonimity a clue for getting mainstream? on: July 31, 2011, 01:07:31 PM
I understand that an enormous part of this actual comunity wants an untraceable paying method

I'm ok with 'less traceable' and I suspect the general public will like where bitcoin fits in too..
ie It's traceability lies somewhere in between that of cash and creditcards.

That a government can use sophisticated correlation methods combined with a few subpoenas and cooperation with other governments, ISPs and bitcoin intermediaries to eventually track down the worst cases is probably going to be seen by many as a good thing.

Unless what you're doing is so serious that it warrants a decent amount of government resources to investigate - then the existing level of anonymity available is probably just fine for the average privacy-conscious individual.

It does seem that the media picks up on the semi-anonymity as if that's a flaw. That is probably because there have been many lazy descriptions of bitcoin as 'completely anonymous', even by community members who should know better.

It's plausible, but I'm not convinced that 'an enormous part of this actual community wants an untraceable paying method'.
When/if large bitcoin service providers (such as mybitcoin.com?) disappear with community members bitcoins - I bet many will be happy for there to be some trail for law enforcement to follow.
2282  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will reach 5-6 dollars within 1-2 months on: July 31, 2011, 12:37:19 PM
I think the mybitcoin.com situation might be spooking some people.

I haven't seen much in the media about their disappearance.. but it's potentially another bit of bad publicity.

CNN's recent bitcoin story showed a screenshot of mybitcoin on someone's phone so I suspect rather a lot of people used it.. especially those who are less techie.
Bitcoin-related companies burning new investors like this can't be good for the price.

Why the bitcoin is no substitute for credit cards
http://blog.instabill.com/index.php/2011/07/29/bitcoin-no-substitute-for-credit-cards

(
Instabill pimping themselves over bitcoin by pushing some tired old misinformation regarding the mtgox flash crash, as well as this FUD gem:

"Because bitcoins are computer-generated, it is possible to create counterfeit coins."

BTC  =  BEGUELIN & Co S.A. DAMAS Tramelan

Swiss watch movement manufacturer

Sorry to spoil the fun Wink

Incorrect. The movement is manufactured by ETA a company owned by The Swatch Group. These are the same movements used in many of the major luxury brands. Very few watch companies make their own movements.

Apparently they did use "BTC" - but the Beguelin company has probably been out of business for many decades now!
My apologies for implying you were joking.

Perhaps in many years time the 'BTC' will confuse some watch collectors too.

Recently I've noticed a few Chinese articles popping up in my searches for bitcoin articles.
I've used google translate to check out some of them..  so far they've been fairly short and basic rehashes of other news.

Here's one which seems a little more in depth - describing how to mine them and comparing them to the Chinese virtual currency 'Q coin' (a centralized system run by Tencent QQ)

As you can see from the title - google translate does a sterling job of translating Chinese into... 'Chinglish'.. but that's to be expected I guess!

I've no idea how much press bitcoin is getting in the Chinese language media overall and whether it's generally positive/negative - perhaps someone who can actually read Chinese can clue us in.

2290  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Most Secure wallet ever Guide!!! on: July 28, 2011, 01:22:25 AM
That's all you need Its called limited bandwidth security. (LBS)

Otherwise known as - lame and ineffective.

(quite how a 10baseT NIC, which at 10Mbps is faster than most people's available upload bandwidth anyway is 'limited' I don't know)

You do realize that an attacker doesn't need to suck down the entire 1TB of noise you've generated to steal money don't you?

I guess it might stop a basic attack which simply tries to grab the entire wallet... but if anyone actually believed this was 'most secure' - a script which was smarter about grabbing only the private keys which correspond to some coinage would soon evolve.

Confused still? Me too! I say pick the box that you want to fit in...

we're a bunch of serious court cases away from an answer.

Bitcoin's lack of centralization (read: deep pockets) is both a blessing and a curse.

a blessing, because there's nobody and nothing for the government to attack.

a curse, because it's unlikely that the folks who will need lawyers the worst to defend themselves against the government will have the money to do so.

Actually it could be argued that the bitcoin community has very 'wide' pockets.  The sheer ease of donation to a cause via bitcoin may mean that a large number of contributors will choose to assist.

2293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Google+Bitcoin vs. Facebook+FB Credits on: July 26, 2011, 09:28:11 PM
I actually hope google is a latecomer to the bitcoin ecosystem.
It's a giant squid of a thing with tentacles in too many pies.
It can afford to subsidize operations in one market with profits from another - destroying profitability for other innovators.

2296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / khanacademy gearing up for bitcoin lesson? on: July 26, 2011, 08:21:10 AM
(Well this is the speculation section..  I assume I don't need much more than a twinge in my big toe as evidence)

Sal Khan of khanacademy.org has been doing some videos on inflation, deflation, velocity of money, banking etc over the past weeks.

e.g http://www.khanacademy.org/video/deflationary-spiral?playlist=Finance

I feel sure* he's winding up for a big bitcoin exposé  any time now...  let's hope it's a positive one!
(or at least nicely balanced and neutral as his stuff generally appears to be)

Oh what a joy it would be ... people arriving on these forums already economically literate! Wink

*for some extremely speculative value of 'sure'

Hi, could someone confirm this one: Metro.co.uk of 25/07/2011 ?
I read it in a comment on slashdot.

It's slightly hidden as a flash presentation behind an email-address snaffler

Thanks for good promotion initiative. But prize money are not so high to really motivate people. Probably, you may try to appeal for donations to support this project Wink.

By the time he has to pay out..  who knows how high 10 BTC may be!?
