2361  Economy / Economics / Re: SEC charges Kim Kardashian for unlawfully touting crypto on: October 04, 2022, 06:56:05 AM
There could be a twist to this case. If I remember correctly ethereum, upon which ethereum max was built, as an ERC-20 token. Wasn't classified a security until after it adopted proof of stake recently. Kim Kardashian promoted ETH max before the transition to proof of stake.

From what I know, some years ago the crypto coins were considered commodities, but the tokens were already seen as securities.
Also, since she agreed with this fine, there will be no lawsuit on the matter, which could touch this problem.

What I find more interesting is that, from what I've read, she was telling "it's not a financial advice" in that advert, still, it looks like that part was somehow ignored/downplayed, which is imho concerning.
2362  Economy / Economics / Re: Africa with so much endowed natural resources but remains the poorest. Solutions on: October 03, 2022, 10:32:48 AM
It's not only the West exploiting your natural resources. You also have China setting up debt traps and your politicians wholly accepting it for their own personal gain. The youth needs to stand up against your corrupt politicians and start making moves to remove these guys from the office. Africans are selling Africa to other nations, let's face it. The colonial powers and China are extracting every resource they can from your continent because your leaders allow them to do so. If you want Africa to prosper, stop choosing the same people and putting them in the office then maybe you'll have a head start.

The selling of resources is a fake problem. The real problem is the lack of education. If education would be at high levels then there would be more factories and enterprises that would help selling everything with a significant added value.
There are too few countries that improve their citizens' life for real with money from selling the resources. On the other hand, if a certain level of education is reached, people can earn better and can also elect smarter government.
2363  Economy / Economics / Re: SO MANY BLACK SWANS FOR ONE YEAR on: October 03, 2022, 10:10:35 AM
It can be said that the war between Russia and Ukraine has not caused as much impact as what covid has caused us (human and economic losses).

COVID should no longer produce significant loses.

On the other hand, the loses caused by the energy war (derived from the Russia vs Ukraine war) may be still in a rather early phase and we will see after many more months how long is this going to go (I expect years to adjust infrastructure and prices) and how many companies will have to close doors at least for the winter.

I expect the war's full impact, especially as coming after COVID, will be exponentially bigger.

2365  Economy / Economics / Re: Take shelter, a storm is coming in October. on: October 03, 2022, 08:07:23 AM
1. You've come with quite a number of topics. While it can be indeed the big picture on the recession that may be about to start, it can attract a lot of trolls, especially on the last point.

2. Indeed, Twitter is full "Credit Suisse is about to fall" and some unsettling news on China too. And the "perfect storm" needs more points to start from. However, while you added the war as an important point, the energy war that's also going on seems to be missing, although it's most probably the main cause for some of the problems listed.

3. The energy war that came after the COVID crisis made the inflation go over the roof. Well, the politicians' actions as answer to those events/threats has created the inflation, but this is where we stand now. BoE is just one of the many that will have to step in and do something while they still can; I don't see it as part of the recession, I see it part of the patching that's going on everywhere in a desperate attempt to prevent what's worse.
2366  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: 12 Word Recovery Phrase - a security weakness? My (free and simple!) solution(s) on: October 03, 2022, 07:51:19 AM
You can mitigate your chances of losing access to the particular version of the book by choosing a book that will likely continue being published, like the bible.
The Bible is probably one of the worst possible choices, actually. There are literally hundreds of different versions, with each version having dozens of editions, and even the same edition of the same version being different due to having multiple publishers and/or printers. Even something as simply as line spacing being slightly different or page size being slightly different and your page/line/word schematic is rendered completely useless and your coins completely inaccessible.

Any translated book has this problem. If one wants to have a good chance for this, he should pick a widely published writing that was originally written in English.
Of course, if you have 100 books in your (non-EN) mother tongue and one in English, that may pretty much stand out...
2367  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Noob needs help connecting to node on: October 03, 2022, 07:46:11 AM
My goal is to write a small POC app for aggregating metrics like:
- count of new wallets created within a particular time range
- count of wallets within a particular time range with balances > X
and many more metrics like this for the purpose of gauging global interest/activity in Bitcoin at any given time.

The reason I didn't wan't to run a full node on my local machine is because it doesn't stay up and I wanted a node w/reliable uptime so I could get more up-to-date chain data.

My advice is to start with reading much more about bitcoin. No offense, but you seem to need that.
As said, the blockchain doesn't tell anything about wallets, also a "new" address is not registered anywhere, so nobody knows (except the owner) that it's created.

And if you have missed this, I expect you'd be missing other info too, getting you into various mistakes or even paying big money for a cloud service that won't help you.
So: learn more, it may save you money.
2368  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is there any hardware wallet which has option to import single private keys? on: October 03, 2022, 07:21:27 AM
I just want to move funds from software wallet (on PC which is always offline) whithout going online (if possible).

I don't know if you'll find a HW that allows importing private key, I've never heard of such behavior for them (but you can give time, maybe others know).

I recommend you take a look onto Tails OS. It's an OS you can easily install onto an USB stick, it contains Electrum (and since you'll take care to always use it offline it should be OK, or you can download Electrum AppImage if you want to be extra sure). It's not a HW, it's a cold storage, you may need to give it some time to learn it, but it should be just fine for your needs.
2369  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How can a thief benefit from his thefts? on: October 03, 2022, 07:13:14 AM
If it is difficult to take advantage of the tokens after discovering the hacking process and informing the sites of the address that was used to be put under surveillance, what are the chances of the success of the tokens hacking process if it can be traced? And are there mixers that hackers can use to complete the theft process without revealing his identity?

I expect that many of the hackers don't think that far. They hope they'll be able to sell before "the world" figures it out and start tracking them.
Or some may even do this to prove their skills and don't expect to get such big money, hence they have no idea/plan what to do next (and may never sell).

After the tracking is on, yep, P2P and DEX are their main choices, although I expect some smaller crypto-to-crypto exchanges may also not be strict in KYC requirements.
2370  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: October 03, 2022, 06:57:20 AM
And this is a joke.

The last time happened was with Vettel in 2010 or 2012 and he got a driver through for a total penalty of 28 seconds.

2 hours to take the not decision because giving to him the minimum amount without letting him lose a single position is like a no-decision.

Well, at least Russell has deserved a penalty too, tbh. And if Leclerc would have been to deserve victory, he should have been overtake Checo. He was close, but was unable to do the step.
So, it could have been different, but Checo did deserve the win.
2371  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: 12 Word Recovery Phrase - a security weakness? My (free and simple!) solution(s) on: October 03, 2022, 06:43:15 AM
Solution

While it's nice to provide various solutions like this I will throw some ideas:
1. There's no universal solution. Some will prefer to "scramble" the words in a way or another, some will keep them as they are. Keep in mind that you're complicating an existing solution and this can easily get the funds lost.
2. Keep in mind that if we can read and find inspiration in your solution(s), the potential thieves also can do so.
3.
3.1. The index-in-a-book solution is not original, it's present even in novels and movies (last one I've seen was a Sherlock movie).
3.2. The git solution is imho overly complicated. Encryption with a long password and upload to cloud under an inoffensive name would not be significantly different: it's only you who knows the logic of retrieval.

I would avoid this kind of solution. Indeed, this makes the words hidden from thieves, but it also makes them hidden from friends and family. If an accident/trauma or a disease gets a bitcoiner into memory loss, he will no longer be able to recover his money, and nobody close to him would also be able to do so. For some this is a real problem, some choose to not care. Again, it depends from person to person.
2372  Economy / Services / Re: IF YOU FROM HUNGARY... on: October 03, 2022, 06:31:15 AM
What kind of weird offer is this? I'm sorry, but I don't think this is going to work out
If you're really serious, why don't you tell us what it is you really want, then maybe we can get down to business, and maybe I'll tell you if I'm from Hungary or not.

I'd guess that if he tells more he will end up with some more negative feedback...
This way he keeps an air of secrecy and maybe some fool jumps in.
2373  Economy / Reputation / Re: jerry0 case on: October 03, 2022, 05:27:00 AM
I hope I'm not giving them ideas...

While it has occurred to me in the past that this kind of shenanigans may be happening, I'd be expecting somebody would do this for himself (for another account of himself), not as service. But yep, never say never.
However, I'd expect such people be lazy, hence won't make such long, and complicated posts many don't even know what's being asked and how to answer. Plus, there are other, more generic topics (like the never old QC) they can pull, not such specific, mostly Ledger related topics.

Avem un concurs nou!

Interesant!!

Multumesc, danke, thank you!
2375  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Wallet can't connect to Electrum Personal Server @ localhost:50002 on: October 01, 2022, 04:23:50 PM
I appreciate your suggestion NeuroticFish. I actually did read about trying the non-secure 50001 port but ended up with the same result, which I'm now realizing is strange since certs shouldn't be utilized over a non-secure port.

I also tired your suggestion to change localhost:50002:t to 50002:s without success, although I admit that I don't know what the S vs. T specification does.

You can go to this page and search for 50002.
Shortly, T means TCP, S means TLS. The thing is that TCP is by default on 50001 and TLS is by default on 50002.
However, from what I see in your other answer I think that EPS may not actually be running or may not be expecting connections, and that's what you have to fix first in order to be abler to connect.

Lastly, I'm not sure how to configure SSL for EPS. If you know of a good guide or have a suggestion, I'd gladly try that.

Sorry, I don't know how to do that. I tried working with EPS and found out to be too restrictive for my liking and gave it up.
I remember that I've also tried to use it with Sparrow wallet and that one gave better hints/error messages (than Electrum).
What I have installed was Electrs, even made a full tutorial for it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5367296
But on EPS, sorry, my knowledge is rather limited. Maybe others give you better hints.

2377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [LAUNCHED] Bitcoincleanup.com: a website to stop Greenpeace's bitcoin FUD. on: September 30, 2022, 08:37:52 PM
Playing devil's advocate here: to me, this doesn't prove Bitcoin doesn't consume a lot of energy. If anything, the same energy consumption as about 200 million refrigerators is a lot (and the average American refrigerator is a lot bigger than they are in my country).
[~snip~]
The numbers are no doubt true, but it doesn't mean anything. You can't use transmission losses to power a Bitcoin miner, and you can't avoid the losses either. It's a trade off between power line thickness and power losses.

This is not meant to tell Bitcoin doesn't consume. It does. This was meant to compare with things closer to the American "average Joe", so it doesn't look as scarily huge like <insert country name here>'s total consumption (where industry consumption may or may not have a major role).
Of course, you are not wrong, but there is the volume comparison and there is the utility comparison. It looked interesting to me as volume (while you've discussed the utility). However, if this is not useful, no biggie.

PS. The consumption per transaction is a bullshit metric and maybe that should be debunked/explained too (but not to me and in terms a non-bitcoiner can understand).
2378  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [LAUNCHED] Bitcoincleanup.com: a website to stop Greenpeace's bitcoin FUD. on: September 30, 2022, 09:45:29 AM
I've read today something that may be of help.
It's a comparison between Bitcoin consumption and others' (US fridges, US electricity transmission/distribution loses). It can help to show Bitcoin doesn't consume that much electricity.

The University of Cambridge currently reports that the Bitcoin network currently consumes 94 terawatt hours (TWh) per year. To put this into context, all of the refrigerators in the United States alone consume more than the entire BTC network at 104 TWh per year.

Furthermore, transmission and distribution electricity losses in the U.S. alone are 206 TWh per year, which could power the Bitcoin network 2.2 times over. Cambridge also reports that the Bitcoin network power demand has decreased by 28% since mid-June. This is likely due to miner capitulations during the bear market and more efficient mining hardware being adopted.
2379  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Interview: Amir Taaki on the Early Days of Bitcoin on: September 30, 2022, 08:24:30 AM
Can you prove that you are the writer who conducted the interview? Or add your account in the forum on the article?

He tells at start of interview "I'm Vlad from Bitcoin Takeover", the website is BTCTKVR, the article is signed by Vlad and bitcointalk username (Vlad BTCTKVR) is older than the article. It looks good enough to me.

I've just published an interview with early Bitcoin developer Amir Taaki and I decided to also write an article about it.

While I was not convinced by the article (sorry), I've been listening to some parts of the interview (will probably listen to all of it later today) and I can say that although I don't agree with everything he says, it was very interesting. The actual interview is at https://youtu.be/9mdTS_Gyg7o
2380  Economy / Economics / Re: SO MANY BLACK SWANS FOR ONE YEAR on: September 30, 2022, 07:05:02 AM
So what can be the next black swan?.

There are plenty of options, although if I'm thinking they are possible they're not really black swans.

* WW3
* official recession in USA and/or Eurozone
* financial problems in China and possible contagion to EU/US
* outbreak of yet another disease (cholera in UKR or RU? polio in UK?)
* civil war in Iran

Plus, in crypto world, I would not rule out:
* yet another DeFi hack or bankruptcy
* legal problems for Tether or Ripple

PS. ETH price falling as a result of going PoS is not a black swan. The only unexpected part was long ago, when they agreed they go PoS.
