1521  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: nostr - Meet the Bitcoiners on the new "decentralized twitter" on: December 22, 2022, 11:05:54 AM
closed source software specially one that posts stuff on github but doesn't include any source code (has only binaries) since such projects look extra shady.

After going from link to link I've stumbled upon this one, which might be the source code for nostr console app. I don't know Dart and didn't really look into those files, so maybe somebody else can confirm:

Meet the Bitcoiners on the new "decentralized twitter" - nostr

Um... I have a feeling that bitcointalk is just fine for many bitcoiners. So why bother with nostr?
1522  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should your wife or husband know your seed phrase? on: December 22, 2022, 10:48:13 AM
When a man gets married to a woman to become husband and wife, they become one and everyone expects that they can get to share everything with each other. I know of women who have the passwords to their husbands bank cards and they can make withdrawals on his behalf. I will like to ask the Men here if they have shared their seed phrase with their wife's? I will like to ask the women here how they will feel if their husbands refuse telling them their seed phrase?

I think that even more important than knowing the actual seed is knowing where it is and how to retrieve/use it in case of problems.
While my wife is using freely my cards, she is superstitious and avoids the discussions about the backup seed of my Ledger. Luckily she knows the PIN on it too.

But I expect that in many cases the people here have their own bitcoins, in some cases their partners don't even know about those Wink (the equation might be different after marriage though).

....did what, exactly?

Central African Republic has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. I think it was in April.
Of course, 2-3 more words about it could have been nice in the nomination.

While I admire that you've put some effort in creating this, you seem to have forgotten to check if this information is already present.
And from what I know, these two topic already seem to cover that, in a way or another:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5230289.0

However, maybe indeed a topic like this was needed in B&H too after all...

Fiind 1/16 sansele erau chiar bune.

Ce mi-as dori eu cu adevarat, insa, este un exemplar din The Times din 3 ianuarie 2009 Roll Eyes Dupa cum se poate vedea aici, sunt doar vreo 10 disponibile in toata lumea, cu preturi cuprinse intre 250.000$ si 1.200.000$. Am incercat in multe parti sa-l obtin (inclusiv de la The Times -- care, ce crezi?, nu pastreaza arhive; inclusiv la diverse anticariate din Anglia, unde am si platit pentru a verifica in arhive etc.), insa in zadar pana acum...

Wow.

Wink
1526  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is cloud mining profitable in 2022? on: December 22, 2022, 09:20:37 AM
Over the past few years, the crypto world has undergone numerous changes and so has cloud mining. The whole face of cloud mining has changed. Cloud mining will always be the best option to earn profits without the need to pay for equipment and related costs, and 2022 is no exception. Apart from the money making factor, by mining on the cloud platform, the risk is reduced to a great extent. And cloud mining is a profitable mining method.

Cloud mining was in 2022, like in the few past years too, a shiny wrapping over Ponzi scams in order to lure people who don't understand mining into depositing money into their scam.
So:
1. Cloud mining topics have nothing to do with mining, hence no reason to stay in the mining area.
2. So called cloud mining were profitable for the scammers and unprofitable for the rest.

All this being said, did you ever use a cloud mining website in 2022 and managed to withdraw? And if you didn't, what are you talking about?!
1527  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Where to bet in e-sports? on: December 22, 2022, 09:06:45 AM
And what are the best places for that?

The best place is probably the casino you prefer. And nowadays there are options to choose from.
Since I wear Betnomi avatar, I guess that it's not unnatural to show you that Betnomi too offers e-sports betting:

1528  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which kind of situation will force you to sell? on: December 21, 2022, 09:25:40 PM
What kind of situation do you think is enough to pressure you in seeling some of the bitcoins you have been holding. Is family or health challenge enough reason to?

While own or family health issues are probably the cases that fit best in the scenario of selling (especially "no matter what"), not everybody on this forum is on the "never sell" boat.
Not everybody have invested only some of the extra money into Bitcoin. Some even earn bitcoin and sell (some more, some less) to support themselves.

So was your question meant only to the hardcore HODLers or you've missed some of the other cases?

1530  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Figuring out the "actual" price of a token on: December 21, 2022, 05:22:28 PM
NOTE: I am using the Australian Dollar for currency in this example ( something I can not figure out how to display on Coin Market Cap ! )

If you try to use CAD and other non-USD, non-EUR currencies, you will most probably face not only the problems of the token's price, also problems with different quotations for USD-CAD (or other currency).

CMC and CoinGecko get info from various exchanges and various pairs. They may or may not care of your exchange. They may even care about the reported volumes to make certain exchanges' price be more meaningful (weighted average).
Of course, the average between sell and buy price is the basis in all cases.
Then, as I said, depending on what they use for converting to CAD, the differences can get even bigger.

What gives ? These are huge differences if you've got large number of tokens !?

Nothing spectacular. It simply means that with some luck and by looking up the right moment and the right exchange, you may buy cheaper or sell more expensive than you do at your local exchange.
This is what arbitrage is made for - some traders try to even earn money from such differences. But you're at the middle, and if the spread is not too big at your exchange then you're fine.

However, I'd warn that arbitrage is risky - from getting onto unknown exchanges with issues at deposits or withdrawals to slow blocks making the difference disappear by the time your money arrive to the right exchange - so be careful if you go on that path.
1531  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How does instant exchanges work? on: December 21, 2022, 05:00:28 PM
I wondered how they are working, like the process from receiving the payment to exchanging and sending the exchanged crypto.

Let's say you want to exchange between BTC and ETH (the default at changenow).

My guess would be:
* They have in their wallets some BTC and ETH. They also have at a certain (or more than one) exchange some coins - both ETH and BTC.
* When your bitcoins were sent and the required confirmations have passed, their system will:
   1. Exchange that amount (maybe minus some fees) at the exchange
   2. Send you (from their wallets, not from exchange's) the promised amount.

At a later point, they will "equalize" the funds by transferring to/from exchange as needed.

But this is my guess. What they actually do there, I don't know.
1532  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Looking for btc price (by minute/second) website on: December 21, 2022, 03:02:47 PM
As already said, the price may differ from exchange to exchange, there's no global bitcoin price.

If you want historic prices, Kraken offers them, just it's not straightforward to use them - for example the date-time seems to be in Unix format, not in human readable one, plus Q4 2022 is not available yet, however, maybe this helps too. It's basically all the transactions and their timestamp. More accurate than you need. But, again, that's only one exchange.

https://support.kraken.com/hc/en-us/articles/360047543791-Downloadable-historical-market-data-time-and-sales-

I guess that it's the XBT pairs you'll need, in case you go on this path.

So, guys what is your advice about it?

If you want to see if/how can you do this legally, a good direction could be to ask Binance's support about this.
If you want to do this, probably going through VPN or remote desktop to your computer in Turkey would be the solutions... until Binance people figure this out.
1535  Other / Meta / Re: Shall we lock all topics about World Cup 2022 in next 7 or 14 days? on: December 20, 2022, 09:56:42 PM
Please share your thinking.

Learn some patience, they'll die off soon enough; and report them where's the case (duplication or low quality posts).
I am no longer convinced that all these topics in Meta are genuine concerns either. But maybe I start to become too paranoid...
1536  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin's Future: What Happens When the Block Reward is Lower Than Fees? on: December 20, 2022, 09:47:28 PM
What do you think will happen when the block reward subsidy is 1.5625 BTC

The fact bitcoin will be so difficult to earn should make the price go significantly higher.
The fact LN and maybe similar solutions will be used on a larger scale may make tx fees even go lower.

So imho comparing the block reward with the tx fees is useless/counterproductive. I think that block reward + tx fees should be compared with the fiat cost of mining a block, and then we would see how much one Bitcoin worth.
Of course, various modifiers have to be taken into account, from the more performant machines by then to many more using very cheap energy from the sun. Also don't forget the inflation of fiat.
But that's all. I don't understand why you've tried to overcomplicate the equation, but I see no problem with block reward going lower than the tx fees, even though I expect that happen significantly later than your predicted time frame.

1537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Teaching the use of decentralized exchanges on: December 20, 2022, 09:14:19 PM
Most people don't see the risk of storing their coins in an exchange wallet.
Most people disregard the possibility of losing control of their money if there is something will happen to the exchanges they used.
Panic has been growing after the FTX issue come out and people are withdrawing their funds from exchanges.

What happened to FTX gives a lesson to those holders who still using exchanges wallet. And you are right OP, lack of knowledge is one reason why people had lose their money. Therefore, it is an urge to have a huge understanding and invest time learning about the crypto market.

Most people lack the capability to properly take care of their coins. Also they were taught by the banks for so many years to keep their money in others' hands, they can't think it can be done better (plus they don't understand that unlike in the case of EU banks, if a CEX falls nobody will reimburse them).
And most people are too cheap to buy a hardware wallet.
I will add that there are also probably a very big number of day traders that can have a chance to earn only if they do keep money there.

While I do agree that people should get their money into their own custody, it's not an easy task and I don't expect it to happen fast, no matter how many MtGox and FTX happen.

~Do you think it is advisable to use preach the use of decentralized exchanges despite all the risk involved?

The risks are preached mostly by the people who didn't use DEX.
I think that there's a learning curve, I think that people need to be taught, but if you start with "despite the risks" you've already lost them.

~Do you think emphases should be more on teaching tye use of self custody?

I think that the benefits of self custody need to be said a lot more, but also people should become aware that if they are not tech savvy, self custody probably means hardware wallet.
On this topic I'd say that the hardware wallets getting cheaper would probably help.
1538  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoiners kill Bitcoin, and governments are happy, boycott the CEXs on: December 20, 2022, 09:03:51 PM
Are you blind?

It's not about blindness, it's more about greed, lack of understanding properly what they see and also impatience.
People want to get money - fiat money - very fast, as much as possible. They don't understand all these details, they don't even care about them. Heck, they don't understand nor care about bitcoin either! Of course then that way too many want a "bitcoin account", no matter that this means an account in a CEX that may fail tomorrow. All they want is to get fast to a little slice of this pie.

Yes, bitcoiners too make the mistake of using CEX sometimes. But that's a different story and the scale is smaller. There the problems might start with poorer countries and less options available and continue with the (bad) habits and laziness. Still, I think that this happens at a rather small scale.

The less convenient part could also be true when it comes to chains. When I am using binance I can trade so many coins

You've just proven my point. So many coins. Greed*. I am almost sure you don't know well enough most of those. Because if you'd know, you'd notice that those "so many coins" are just a distraction, just a curtain of smoke preventing you see what makes sense to follow and what not. But why do that when you can trade/gamble between a lot of interesting names, hoping to get some easy money?
(* Please don't get offended, everybody is greedy to a certain point; of course, including myself.)
1539  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Slow down if you want to recover your losses on: December 20, 2022, 08:35:23 PM
Actually, the martingale technique doesn't have to always double your bet in every round or spin.

That's correct. There are various variation from the rule. Still the main Martingale is doubling.

There is nothing wrong with any technique, what is wrong is when it is difficult to control our emotions

Actually the fact we try to make one bet more meaningful, the fact we think that at a certain point there's a bigger chance to see high value or low, is imho a mistake. The random generator doesn't care what was the previous number. And all this makes "the technique" wrong. At least this is how I see it.
Am I wrong?
1540  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for an Easy, Non-Custodial Wallet for my parent's friend (who died) on: December 20, 2022, 02:49:17 PM
Online/web wallets can be a pain in the ass. From errors they may have, to phishing and the possibility the wallet becomes malicious itself. I'd avoid them.
There's another problem I see there: you have not only bitcoin, but a mix of coins. For Bitcoin it could have been easier: you generate a (paper?) wallet and you're already good; but 4 (paper?) wallets can become overly confusing.

For BTC, ETH and LTC, one easy and safe way would be a hardware wallet. XMR I don't know which hardware wallet supports it correctly, I had some surprises with XMR and Ledger, but I don't know if it was my lack of knowledge or they've changed too something (luckily I've moved the coins away as advised by somebody, but at recheck after the last XMR fork, my Ledger has returned different address to me).

So without XMR, Ledger + Leger Live is the easiest option. I don't know if you want to also invest in a hardware wallet, so I won't continue; if you want to invest maybe you find something more reputable than Ledger for the job.

If the amounts are not big and you are tech savvy, maybe you configure a bootable USB stick with a Linux on it, with an Electrum, with Monero official wallet configured with a list of live servers, and maybe you find SPV / simple options for ETH and LTC too...

It's not an advise to use it, however, all in one could be Trust wallet. Still not online/web, even more, not even open source, still, it supports multiple coins (I don't know which) and afaik it's self-custody. Keep in mind that it's owned by Binance.
