1421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 03, 2023, 09:41:08 AM
I tend to believe more and more it's a prank.

* The story is still only on Twitter and not on Mastodon, although it tells everywhere "Mastodon preferred"
* Stealing from the cold storage would be possible only if the user would be more than incredibly sloppy/uncautious.
* I don't think that somebody for so long in Bitcoin would ask for FBI help, and also would not do it on Twitter.
* Luke Dash Jr is (proudly!) asking for donations for his work; was he indeed owning 200 BTC ?!

I *know* that Peter Todd has confirmed the story, but the things still don't add up.

as for the supposed 'coinjoin mixer' scenario luke hints.. strange thing is his raided coins went into the 1YAR address.. but have not moved out.

Yes, that too; I've followed some of those transactions and it looks more a consolidation of funds than anything else.

What can we also do to better ourselves and avoid such situation? Is there anything he could do do avoid this?

Use cold storage safer, i.e. transfer tx via images, not USB stick between cold and hot storage or simply use hardware wallet.
Make sure the private keys have never been and never will be on a computer that will go online, not even for printing them.

This kind of precautions should at least keep the cold storage safe.

The next difficulty adjustment will make it 5.2% easier for miners.

It's already 3.4% and decreasing; I guess that the miners affected by the bad weather are firing their gears up again.

Since Gazeta keeps asking when I make my bet Grin, here we are:

And yes you don’t understand how crypto works, I’ve ask told you multiple times that you can blacklist coins you can only blacklist crypto wallets. It’s a shame that you are on a crypto forum thinking you are right and you csn blacklist coins individually.

So you say that if some coins from Blacklisted address A are sent to address B and then to you they're absolutely fine, because they're not from a blacklisted address/wallet.
You're telling big words, but it looks like it's you who doesn't understand much.

I have received private messages even from legendary users, that are agreeing with me.

This is a good one Cheesy

I would need to connect the cold wallet to the laptop/smartphone & copy+paste the key right?

I am researching it as we speak. Any tips would be greatly and humbly appreciated.

I think that you may be misunderstanding something, so let's make the terms clearer.
Cold wallet or cold storage is usually a wallet software running on a laptop that's always offline.
Hardware wallet is an external device that can create wallet seed and sign transactions; this also needs a wallet software running on a laptop or smartphone, but they can be (should be) connected to the internet.

So, in order to get the master public key from a cold wallet you need either an USB stick, either (better) a camera, since Electrum allows sharing all kind of info, including the master public key, as QR image. If this is the "connect the cold wallet to the laptop/smartphone" you had im mind, then maybe you've used bad terms and I'm too strict.

If you meant hardware wallets... then there's no sharing of keys between the HW and the software wallet from your laptop/smartphone you should do. By connecting the HW to the wallet software the wallet software knows what to do in order to show you the addresses and request signing transactions. In this case, some wallets (Ledger Nano S plus, Trezor T, Trezor one, some others too) work with cable connection, others (Ledger Nano X, Satochip, some others too) work with wireless connection (Bluetooth or NFC) hence don't need physical connection.
1426  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 02, 2023, 10:47:25 AM
What would be the safest and most secure setup for a cold wallet? I am now unsure how to transfer from cold wallet to an online address without compromising security.
Would it be possible to transfer BTC from cold wallet to another cold wallet and then send from that secondary cold wallet to an online address? That way my original cold wallet isn't connecting to the internet or being directly exposed?

Get a hardware wallet. Or a SeedSigner device.
...Or set up both your cold storage and companion watch only hot wallet with Electrum on laptops with cameras, hence allowing you transfer those transactions (unsigned and signed) as QR code images.

If you're adding a secondary cold storage:
* you're doing it wrong
* you've misunderstood something and need to read more

However, this is off topic, if you have more questions please make a new topic with them.

I've just found out that this topic is also discussed on Bitcoin Discussions.
And @tranthidung does have a point: this may not be META material.

...So... maybe we continue there? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5432665.0
1428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 02, 2023, 10:20:24 AM
For example, using USB storage to transfer unsigned and signed transaction could  be exploited by specifically designed malware.

Everything looks more than sloppy for a Bitcoin Developer. Surreal. Hot wallet is possible, but a dev's cold wallet... hmm...

While Peter Todd has confirmed the story, also on Twitter, I find it incredible and I still tend to think that's higher chance both Twitter accounts (Luke-Jr and Peter Todd) are compromised than all this story (including Luke calling on Twitter for FBI, come on...). Even more, no sign of this story on his Mastodon/BitcoinHackers account.
1429  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New to Bitcointalk - Where to safely purchase Bitcoin? on: January 02, 2023, 10:08:11 AM

1. I recommend you consider buying/using a hardware wallet, it's more newbie friendly and you may make less mistakes than with a cold storage.
2. No matter what storage you use (cold storage of HW), consider recovering from seed after the initial setup so you are sure the backup seed you will store (safely, offline, multiple copies) is the correct one.
3. I recommend you withdraw first a smaller amount to verify the process goes on as it should, then the rest, even if this means doubling the withdrawal fee. For 3 BTC no safety measure is too small.

Also the recommendation you've already got to ignore private messages and invitations to Telegram, Discord or whatever is a very good one.

1- If I were to transfer my BTC from a cold wallet to a hot wallet would this weaken the security of the cold wallet or increase my chances of being hacked?

It depends how badly you do it. Keep in mind that cold storage is meant to always stay offline, no matter what. Do you know how to use cold storage to sign a transaction without transforming it in hot wallet? I hope you do.
1430  Local / Română (Romanian) / Re: Concursuri/tombole pe bitcointalk (sau pe aprope) on: January 02, 2023, 09:52:10 AM
Mai stiti discutia asta... Na, concursul a fost pe bune. MJ chiar a castigat. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5427560.msg61511231#msg61511231

Revenind, astazi te simti in stare pentru predictie? Smiley

1431  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator Account may be compromised? on: January 02, 2023, 09:37:35 AM
Excuse me, who is Luke Dash Jr.? Is he one of forum moderators?

I know that he's one of the known Bitcoin Core devs and I know that he's on other projects too and since his PGP key has to be considered compromised, people should be very careful.
About what's his role on this forum... this is his account, I don't know if he's mod on the forum.

And while OP may be wrong on the mod part, the rest is quite concerning (for both sloppiness and the actual fact he got hacked).
1432  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator Account may be compromised? on: January 02, 2023, 07:20:45 AM
According to Peter Todd it's not a Twitter hack and it's for real
https://mobile.twitter.com/peterktodd/status/1609655629903265795

Although I fail to understand that
* everything is lost, even cold storage (come on...)
* he was asking FBI for help

FYI I've confirmed that this is real and not a Twitter hack via a mutual friend.

IIUC he used Gentoo as his desktop and didn't keep different activities separated. So backdoored software is one of many ways this could happen; he may not have been targeted.

Use @QubesOS

1433  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BLOCKCHAIN account- Newbie - how to get one? on: January 01, 2023, 10:22:36 PM
SO - Neurotic.....i went into 'view' and what comes up is a LOAD of 'receiving' ( green colour ) and a few 'yellow' colours. What the...is that!!!!!

SO... TOTALLY CONFUSED.

What are they? i am now worried...i give the dodgy casino a address..which is useless so even if they were geninue...id still not get the monies!!

-  HERES what i was going to do.    Please just tell me, its right.

- I have ( already ) pressed, Receive ( following on from previous instructions from previous email ) , and an addreess comes up, as mentioned 7days...thanks for explaining that....i didnt put the amount in.  That ok>?      SO....i will take this address and give it too casino site ( which as mentioned i tried..and works...in that seems ok...but havent pressed the actual withdraw button ).

THATS IT.  yes? Ignore all those green and yellows addresses! in the View TAB.

All those addresses are yours, don't worry. Get the first green one and you're OK.
Or get the one from the Receive tab and you're most probably OK with that too (that address too is most probably in that big list)
1434  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BLOCKCHAIN account- Newbie - how to get one? on: January 01, 2023, 10:09:30 PM
I have just followed these instructions...easy enough..thanks..BUT....now what? you left off...where does the address i need come up...im just left with an open wallet? DO I NOW GO TO 'RECEIVE' AND in this wallet ( i click  recreate request?   theres an amouint there...but ignoring that...? do i just generate that address then? and then copy and paste it?  DO I NEED TO add amount AND WHAT ABOUT EXPIRES?   whats all that about?

( sigh! )  So- expires..shall i have it a week?  does it matter...say..the casino takes a week to send me the money....what happens?   what about keeping it so it never expires?

Note, i was going to try to withdraw one amount and if that works i would download a final amount..only few hundred as i say...but ..that ok?  i take it..need another line of address for that?  ( but would setup a 'new wallet' using same idea - that 'seed' you mentioned..ok to use that again?   walk before run here...just get 1 withdraw done.... SO, expires?  will i LOSE ANY BITS if it expires? or once in my wallet its there for good?

Easier: Do View->Show Addresses
Go to Addresses tab
Copy (CTRL-C) the first address from there and you're good. (it starts with 1, right?)

PS. In the "receive" area it's not the address that's expiring, it's the "request", and that doesn't matter much. However, working with the addresses tab can be easier for your peace of mind.

1436  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin mining algorithm: improving efficiency? on: January 01, 2023, 09:48:52 PM
a delagated proof of work

Delegating to others means trusting them. Why would one miner or pool trust another miner or pool?! They're fiercely competing each other! Any miner would love to get an edge, even by not playing fair, in order to win the next block. Bitcoin is not meant to need trust in somebody else. That's why it still works.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this looks to me more about not taking into account the human factor (and the high chance some would try to cheat), than about cryptography.
1437  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price, January. $20000 or above possible? on: January 01, 2023, 09:41:03 PM
Is bitcoin getting back to $20000 in January or not?

While it is possible to get over 20k, it's hard to tell whether it will actually happen.
But if we do the math, getting there would be 25% up, if also take into the account the current sentiment, with topics telling with charts and numbers that going down to 9k is also possible, ... I add them up and I would be happy even if we end January at over 18k Wink or at least without going lower than 16k.
1438  Economy / Reputation / Re: 'Bitcointalk forum is going downhill because of dkbit98' - CoinPayCard.net on: January 01, 2023, 09:33:51 PM

I've tried to re-formulate one of your questions when this was in same guy's topic in Service Announcements.
His answer was weak, plus he started threatening that he'll lock the topic, so I didn't pay more attention to that topic.
I see now that he has more topics on his service and still trying to avoid some questions.

On this problem you're right (to pursue the truth) and his behavior is shady.

It's obvious to me that this member has before been registered in bitcointalk forum, maybe with some other failed or scam project.

It can very well be the case. I've seen another user too doing this type of service and spawning new topic one after another as soon as the questions have become difficult.

---
Thanks for bringing this back into attention. I've also edited my initial post there (I usually try to be nice/supportive for new businesses and this one is yet another one not deserving it).
1439  Economy / Reputation / Re: My ignore list got a Christmas cleanup on: January 01, 2023, 09:03:56 PM
Everything else is subjective reflections

This is the point you're completely right and you should never forget that. Whatever people may be telling, subjectivism is an important factor.
While it's hard fact that you were not proven as plagiarist (else your account would be gone), the people did make their own opinion on that matter (whether that's correct and reflecting reality or not, that's another matter).
So, no offense, but imho it won't help anyone to make a big deal of it, since, whether you like or not, in many cases it won't be easy to change that subjective bit. I may be wrong, but I think that this matter is best to remain buried in the past.

However, this is imho off topic and I would appreciate to not continue a/the dispute in here, since the idea of the topic was in Christmas spirit.
