2361  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: November 11, 2011, 02:03:34 PM
Its not difficult to understand. Its only difficult if you  pretend you do not see the difference.

One last time: as long as you have not actually sent the coins, to inaba or any other broker, you have not committed to anything and you can always back out with lame excuses when for instance butterfly labs says they accept your bet. You will lose internet connection for weeks, claim some theft or your wallet or whatever excuse. If you have already sent them, then you can not back out and then and only then do you actually risk losing the money rather than losing only face. And you would back out. I got 10 coins that say so Smiley.

So despite all the bold claims, you are not willing to put up that kind of money. You only want to make lots of noise and see if anyone would take you up on your bet. The only bet you are taking is small change and betting your face on the fact no one will bet 1000's worth of BTC against you. Since you dont seem to have much of a reputation, thats hardly very brave.
2362  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: November 11, 2011, 12:06:27 PM
IOW, you are still only risking small change and hinging your reputation on the assumption no one will bet you for 1000s of BTCs. But you are not actually taking the risk by sending 1000.
Q.E.D.

Butterfly Labs, please step forward and bet this man 1000BTC so we can see what his word is worth. Im betting 10 BTC he wont take the bet Smiley.

Is there a donation option somewhere now that Ive missed? Since it seems you are not charging any fees, Im beginning to feel guilty.

There is no such thing as free electricity; someone pays for it. If you want to make money off whoever for pays it, obviously you have to keep mining.
2365  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: November 11, 2011, 08:58:25 AM
Yes, I said 10, Ive just sent 10.
Are you going to send 10000 or just 1000 to inaba or are you willing to only risk small change and your face, but not that kind of money?
2366  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5970 VRM Cooling Solutions on: November 10, 2011, 08:48:50 PM
I have a thermal take VRM R5 to cool the VRMs of my 5870. Im not sure its compatible with the 5970, but if it is, get one, its incredible. VRM temps dont exceed 55C no matter what (down from 110+ with the stock cooler). For good measure I added a spitfire cooler for the GPU itself, and now those temps dont exceed 50C. Actually, at this very moment..  as its cooling outside (the rig is in the shed, ambient temps inside around 15C) a stunning 38.5C @900 Mhz.

GPU 0 is the 5870. The other one is a 5850.
Well, a spitfire wont work on a 5970, but the VRM cooler might. Here is a pic:

http://s8.postimage.org/paa2d2ef7/SDC10725.jpg

The VRM cooler is the "small" one with the old orange fan. Fan is completely unnecessary btw.

And maybe i know how to make BTC's into more BTC's that you don't. Trade secrets and all Tongue I'm underneth the iceburg Wink

I actually do know a way to double your bitcoin income, that you apparently havent discovered yet. Ill even share it with you. For free!

Turn off your miners and spend the money you saved on electricity to buy more bitcoins on exchanges. You will get twice as many! Clever huh?

Best of all, it wont hurt the bitcon cause at all and it even helps save the planet as your hashrate will be replaced by more efficient mining rigs that spend less on electricity.  If you spend those bitcoins in the economy, it will even help bitcoin rather than helping your utility provider.

Quote
Guessed figures and got just below breaking even.

LOL. You guessed wrong. Currently no one makes a profit with your electricity rates using those GPU's. Particularly not when overclocked and overvolted. And not even with downclocked memory. Seriously?  Next you will tell me you have overclocked quad core CPUs in there too and 70% efficiency PSUs. Tell me, how long have you been mining bitcoins? Because now you make me wonder, perhaps you havent received your first utility bill yet? Sure would explain why you havent killed any cards yet. Or maybe you will only get your revised bill when you leave for India. Hey, that would explain.

Thats fine with me. I havnt worked for 4 years, It's a mugs game. Posh word for slavery. Just do what you need to do and look after your nearest and dearest Wink Not offence but fuck the powers that be and what evertyone else says, Only thing you can be sure about is your actions and how you deal with them. I've found mine and im very happy Tongue

Perhaps you want to explore alternative hobbies like shredding pound bills or making Papier-mβchι castles with them Cheesy

Life a gamble/risk

Perhaps, but mining isnt. Its 1st grade math. All you need is a power meter and a calculator. If you plan on actually paying your bills that is.
2368  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What flags should I use for 5830s? on: November 10, 2011, 08:03:31 PM
On ubuntu you wont be able to clock that card so high, unless you play around with a bios editor. i dont think there is a linux program that lets you exceed the hardcoded "safe" catalyst speeds. Not sure what those are for a 5830, but for a 5850 that means 775 MHz tops.
Other than that, there is very little difference.

cgminer windows 7 5850 @900 MHz = 366 MH/s
cgminer ubuntu      5850 @775 MHz = 316.8 MH/s

So on windows I get 0.4066 MH/Mh (heh, megahash per megahertz) on Linux I get 0.40877

Keeping in mind I use the windows machine for browsing and working, Id call that a wash.
2369  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What flags should I use for 5830s? on: November 10, 2011, 07:35:54 PM
Ive tried them all I think. On a 5850, but I suspect the results apply equally to a 5830. CGminer is fastest. Bitminter is very close. Close enough that I probably wouldnt care. If you want a nice looking flashy GUI miner that launches from a website,  go bitminter. If you prefer a more powerful CLI app, with pool failover, fan control and everything, cgminer is it. No need to look elsewhere.

Where you not the one claiming that I was not really willing to bet? I will have to reread the thread when I have time.

Yes and by putting up 20 BTC you are hardly disproving me.
If you are indeed willing to bet what you say you are (reminder: *I* never made any claims about my willingness to bet) and you trust inaba with your money, you would send him those $10.000 and wait and see who, if anyone,  picks up the gauntlet, even for even odds. THAT would disprove me. THAT would be putting your money were your mouth is. And THAT is what I say you will not do. Prove me wrong.

Dont wait for people to post here that they will accept, because the moment they do for any non trivial amount of money, you can just weasel out. All you risk is your face, but not your money.  Send only 1000 BTC to inaba for anyone to bet against at even odds, even if no one has pledged to match it, and I will take those words back. Until then you are just shouting and making meaningless noises.

Quote
I will match any ones bet on 2 to 1 odds assuming they support what BF labs says is true.  Just give me 48 hours as from time to time I am involved in extreme work. I am helping the Thai government manage the flooding right now and honestly access to internet constantly is well hopeful.

Good luck with that.
2372  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: November 10, 2011, 04:50:32 PM
You can bet as many as you want here:
http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=141
With better odds!

BTW, no need for this attitude. you are the only doing all the shouting and bragging, Ive never even taken a position on wether BFL is legit or not, because I dont know; whatever I am willing to bet is my business. Why dont you put your money where you mouth is, and send 10.000 BTC to Inaba for anyone willing to bet against? Including Butterfly labs if they want to.

2373  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: November 10, 2011, 04:19:26 PM
There already is a nice betting pool, I even bet some coins there but for some reason goat doesnt want to use it.
Sorry to get you dragged in to this Smiley

Ill send them as soon as you publish the address.

oh and for my part, feel free to collect a small fee for your trouble.

Inaba, do I send my 10 coins to the same address ? 1CzKrTnncqVuviR9iyBBL5KBJkHUtv4Sjp ?

Thanks, after downloading the complete block chain in Bitcoin Client, the transaction between Deepbit Pool and my Bitcoin Address was reflecting.

However, I noticed that right after this, Bitcoin Client generated a new address which was displayed at top. So, do I have to update the address on Deepbit after every transaction as well?

You can generate as many addresses as you like, both for sending and receiving; its the only way to keep track of transactions since you dont see the sender. For instance you could make one for deepbit (*), one to put in your signature begging for some coins, one to deposit your poker profits to etc. Just click on the address book button, and label them as you see fit.
Quote
@P4man: That sounds like a good idea. I have configured deepbit account with the Tradehill Deposit Address. One question here, where in the Tradehill site can I see that how many bitcoins do I have?

I have checked the Account Settings page, but there's no section which displays this information.

Cant help you there, I dont have a tradehill account.

(*) I dont understand why people mine on deepbit. Have you seen their rates?  It so much better for bitcoin if people used smaller pools so no single pool "owns" such a large share of the network. Its usually also better for you as a miner, as smaller pools tend to have lower fees. And higher variability which I think is nice if you are a "small" miner. Roll the dice a bit, and get lucky once in a while.

4870s sell for the same price here, sometimes a bit more. Considering I paid my 5850s second hand for about twice that, devaluation isnt a big concern. If I sell in 2 years or so, I will probably have lost ~$50 on each. Morale: dont buy dual GPU Cheesy

Yup and it is slow and steady.

It only appears slow and steady if the electromigration is affecting transistors or via's in the critical path; ie, those that affect maximum stable clock speed. That way you can notice it, as the "red line" as you call it decreases. But electromigration may affect any transistor or via on the chip, like caches, PLLs, whatever else outside the critical path. You wouldnt notice, but one day one it will simply no longer function and your card is dead or unstable or whatever - "out of the blue".

The "effective lifespan" of a card may be much shorter than its tecnical lifespan.  As an example FPGA are only going to get more competitive.  That will put downward pressure on the price:difficulty ratio.  Entirely possible that a card bought today will be obsolete in 2-3 years simply because you can't run it without free power due to more efficient FPGA affecting the market.

As long as you dont fry it, GPUs will retain a fair resale value because you can game on them. Or fold Smiley If you fry them, well, people tend to pay considerably less for them Smiley. As for FPGAs, going to be a lot harder to sell them if they become obsolete for bitcoin mining (due to faster asics or bitcoin value approaching zero or whatever). Will be interesting to see how that pans out.

2378  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Mined 3 BTC, now how to cash out? on: November 10, 2011, 01:44:25 PM
why withdraw to your own wallet ? On Tradehill just note your deposit address. Then in your pool, configure that same address as your payout address. Your coins will be sent straight from the pool to the exchange, then you can sell them there if you want. No need to make things more complicated or pay transaction fees twice.

Let me guess : watercooling ?

LOL? Did you not see the picture above? No water cooling, just a Thermal right Spitfire (and VRM R5). Here it is from a different angle:

And yes, those mounting bracket support thingies come with it and are needed as its insanely heavy.
2380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OKPAY accepting bitcoin as a deposit method on: November 10, 2011, 01:21:08 PM
OKpay is apparently the same company as this:
http://www.essentialdatatools.com

A Russian backup-software company with a claimed 10 people working for it.

Thats not to say its per se fraudulent, I suppose Paypal also had only 10 employees at one point, but this isnt huge guys. And its potentially risky:

Wouldnt switch my life savings to there just yet!
