1861  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 5970 Mhash/s ? on: December 30, 2011, 12:10:17 PM
Possibly. Although if you are using the latest AMD drivers (11.12), that also doesnt help. Try bitminter, see my signature. Its easy to use and among the fastest for radeon 5xx0 cards. You can also try cgminer, but its a bit more hassle to set up.
1862  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 5970 Mhash/s ? on: December 30, 2011, 11:13:06 AM
Around 660 MH/s with cgminer or bitminter I think. There is absolutely no point running the card at 1000 MHz memory though. Clock it as low as it will go, it wont hurt performance (in fact, it may marginally increase performance) and it will save you a fair bit of heat/electricity.
1863  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Putting my hand up to be the unofficial bitcoin marketeer on: December 30, 2011, 10:48:50 AM
Meh, if it's unofficial just do it.

Id only be interested if there was a significant amount of people willing to support and donate some hours to develop some systems/software/sites etc.

Some level of coordination, cooperation and direction will be required.

If you have good idea's, Ill gladly contribute to the realization of them on a per case basis. If I think your idea sucks (like trying to convert a Philippine village to bitcoin), you're on your own. So I dont see the point of pledging anything at this point.  Wanting 100 people to 'vote' for you seems little more than ego tripping, no offense.
1864  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Information on ATI 7xxx Series Dec. 5th! on: December 30, 2011, 09:30:27 AM
Total BS in that article. Most of my 5870s can EASILY get a maximum of 440 Mhash/s when slightly overclocked to 960 MHz.

THG didnt overclock any of those card in that mining test. They got 375MH which is exactly what Im getting from my 5870 at stock speed. 375.3 to be exact.  That I can overclock mine to 1 GHz is irrelevant, THG could also overclock their 7970 to >1.1 GHz. Hashrate scales perfectly with clock.
1865  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who creates the jobs? on: December 30, 2011, 09:17:33 AM
So you are saying that if the average person has enough money he will invest it himself?

If the average person has enough money to finance his desiderata, if and when its needed, someone will invest to provide those. The idea that there isnt enough capital for investment is ludicrous; never in recent history has there been a greater concentration of wealth. That wealth is available to invest, the only thing thats missing is the incentive.. ie, profitability of the investment.
1866  Other / Politics & Society / Re: America Beyond Capitalism on: December 30, 2011, 09:14:31 AM
so this got me thinking,
(I'm assuming you like the idea of democracy)
how does democracy not lead to something like corporate feudalism or an oligarchy or some such bad thing?
I think democracy tends to do that because in bad times it is basically mob rule since a majority of people can often be whipped up into a bad agreement out of fear (for simplicity's  sake an agreement that 'that guy should make the decisions now').
the fear can be manufactured by the people who want to become the oligarchs. and they might be able to manufacture the bad times too.

I dont see how wealth or corporate power enters the picture here. I guess I dont see what your point is?
1867  Other / Politics & Society / Re: America Beyond Capitalism on: December 30, 2011, 09:08:48 AM
I'm sorry if this is not worthy of a response. But I am asking an honest question here. Just link me if it is so dumb.

Didnt mean to imply it was unworthy of anything, its just that Im hardly an anarchist scholar. Still, as I understand, in an anarchist (or if you prefer,  libertarian socalist) society, a distinction is made between property and possession. You wouldnt own the oil under the ground. Something which is not that revolutionary as its already true in many state capitalist societies.  Even in the US, afaik, oil thats found offshore doesnt belong to any individual. Its the state that assumes and then sells mineral rights to that oil.

What if someone does not want to share?

Then they dont. Most libertatian socialists advocate voluntary associations, rather than forcing people in to it. Which kinda makes sense, as by its very nature the movement is opposed to authority and statehood.
1869  Other / Politics & Society / Re: America Beyond Capitalism on: December 29, 2011, 09:49:19 AM
Personally, I support something along the lines of a monarch, where exactly one person is in control, to avoid arguing with themselves, but elected for a short period. No congress, no representatives, no nothing, and the in-charge can run the government however they want. It will make it more efficient and better suited for a changing wolrd

Really? And you think you could elect someone uncorruptable enough that there is no need for checks and balances, and that this despote would actually rule in favor of the people and not himself and his inner circle? And that he wouldnt change the laws so he could be re-"elected" again, over and over? Care to give a historical example, preferably that worked better, than say, Putin?
1870  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC P2P lending sites? on: December 28, 2011, 10:28:49 PM
I did say liquid assets. Diamonds or art are not. Let me rephrase my analogy; why would you give 100 euro in collateral for a 100 dollar loan? Are you then loaning or speculating on currency exchange rates?
1871  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: BitMinter miner (FAST, cool GUI, zero installation, Windows/Linux/Mac) on: December 28, 2011, 10:25:50 PM
AFAIK, Java JRE is written in C. If you dont like installing Oracle software, bitminter works fine on IcedTea on linux.
1872  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC P2P lending sites? on: December 28, 2011, 10:14:44 PM
Well, I pulled that 120% collateral percentage out of the air.  The actual collateral percentage, interest rate and maximum duration of the loan would be based on market forces.

Just who would loan if he has more than the loan's principle in liquid assets? Its like loaning $100 and giving $150 in collateral.
 Huh
1873  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: BitMinter miner (FAST, cool GUI, zero installation, Windows/Linux/Mac) on: December 28, 2011, 06:04:34 PM
You dont have to use it.
I think its a good idea though, to make the process even simpler for facebook newbies, which is one audience that bitminter should attract to. I also dont see the point of making a bitminter only login; whats wrong with myopenid?
1874  Other / Politics & Society / Wilkerson on GOP Race and Ron Paul on: December 28, 2011, 01:01:45 PM
Cant say I always agree with him, but always a pleasure to hear Wilkerson talk:

Lawrence Wilkerson: A shameful pandering to the far right is an embarrassment; Ron Paul's foreign policy cannot coexist in the GOP, he will likely create a third party; Wall St. elite happy with Obama

Perhaps when we speak of capitalism we are not meaning the same thing.  I guess what I would want to know is in Chomksy's or your socialist anarchy would you use force against me to take away my property?

Hu?
1876  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who creates the jobs? on: December 28, 2011, 10:05:38 AM
That's not strictly true, either.  You have to have capital (wealth) to start a business.

There is not exactly a lack of capital. US banks are literally sitting on trillions of dollars, thats not the problem. The problem is the majority of consumers are broke.

Quote
The US government survived just fine without an income tax all the way up until 1913 and since then it's just been one excuse or another to keep raising taxes.  Taking a third of a working person's income seems much much too high in my perspective, especially with the sorts of things I see it spent on (undeclared wars overseas, corporate subsidies, fat wasteful defense contracts, inefficient welfare programs, etc.).

Whether a third is too much or not you can debate, what really matters is what you get for your tax dollars. I actually dont mind paying over a third (in fact I pay about 50%) since I get a lot back for it. Decent infrastructure and public transport, excellent and virtually free healthcare, top notch and virtually free education and a social security system thats good enough to give me peace of mind even in difficult times. If I were to pay all that out of my own pocket Id likely end up paying more for less.

But if people want less of that for less taxes, thats fine. As I see it the major problem in the US is the political system that legalizes corporate bribery. As a result you have a government thats not working in the people's interest, but for special interests and your tax dollars are wasted and further enrich the rich. I can understand that breeds hate for government, but  IMO the solution to that is not so much shrinking the government as fixing campaign financing and "lobbying". If one day you again have a government that is by and for the people, perhaps you may be less inclined to want to abolish it and end up with a Somalia style government-"free" country.
1877  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who creates the jobs? on: December 28, 2011, 09:42:45 AM
So you propose taxing the rich and what?  Giving the money to the poorer people to spend?  Using it on infrastructure?  Government creating jobs?

Or pay down the debt, or lower taxes on the other 99%. Its not up to me to say how US taxpayers money should be spent, whether its on a functional healthcare system, infrastructure, education or something else, but from an economic POV its madness to have an upper 1% who own nearly 40% of the wealth and effectively tax them at lower rates than the bottom 99%. Wealth doesnt create jobs, demand does.
1878  Other / Politics & Society / Re: America Beyond Capitalism on: December 28, 2011, 08:11:53 AM
Why do we need to move "beyond Capitalism"? What's wrong with Capitalism? The problem is crony capitalism and government intervention in the free market. Capitalism is fine. It isn't the problem.

The problem is that wealth gets you power. And power gets you wealth. The system is incompatible with democracy. We are headed towards corporate feudalism.

Chomsky is a socialist who either doesn't fully understand or who deliberately misrepresents capitalism.

If he is a socialist, then its in the original meaning of the word, which one would better call libertarian socialist or anarchist, since the word "socialism" has lost all meaning, after being applied to various totalitarian state regimes that are anything but socialist and almost opposite of what people like Chomsky stand for.

As for Chomsky not understanding capitalism.. yeah right. Maybe he should read a book or something  Roll Eyes
1879  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC P2P lending sites? on: December 28, 2011, 07:57:17 AM
I'm thinking of a variation to this.

This idea is for something similar to a pawn shop, where bitcoins are committed as collateral towards a cash (fiat money) loan.  To borrow $100 USD cash the borrower puts up some amount, say $120 worth of BTCs, for instance

So I borrow $100 for a few months. If BTC price goes down by 20% or more, I just keep the dollars. If it doesnt go down, or not enough, I repay the loan. Bitcoinica is for suckers, your system is far better.
1880  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Will minning bitcoins kill your card? on: December 28, 2011, 12:27:39 AM
IMHO, unless you have FREE or extremely cheap electricity, overvolting or overclocking is pointless because it will cost you so much more on your power bill.

Overclocking actually increases efficiency at a given voltage. Power consumption of the card scales at most linearly with clock, meaning the entire rig's (including CPU, ram, motherboard etc) power scales less than linearly with the gpu clock. Performance does scale linearly, so MH/W improves as you overclock the gpu. Overvolting OTOH is of course not going to increase power efficiency, its going to reduce it quite dramatically.
