ive never panic sold btc but, like you, ive sorta "panic bought" things, which is basically the same. of course in 2011-2013 or so there was a lot less confidence in btc so the ability to turn majick internetz money into real stuff was an easy sell.
ive looked up my prev mining addys when i gpu mined btc as i wanted to sign messages saying those addys were mine for various purposes if needed. cringworthy is an understatement as to the amount btc that i mined. ive got a small fraction left, and thats all that matters. its a win in my book. no regerts.
TL;DR: HODL is the best stratagy.
I guess you and Searing share the factor that you were earning some of your income in BTC rather than in fiat, so one thing that puts any BTC earner in the lead of a fiat earner is that s/he is forced to consider his/her HODL strategy ... or allocation regarding what is the ratio of BTC to fiat. So, there is an implied knowledge of BTC, and a likely conscious measure regarding how much of that value needs to be treated like a longer term investment versus used for daily living expenses. it is a different mindset. i had a strategy for mining that worked for my situation as far as how much was long term vs play btc. but also consider at that time i wasnt in in for the long term value that may or may not moon/crater at any moment. it was for fun and belief in the tech. i wanted to use it. not just collect it. i still have that respect of course. but with the 50 thousand percent increase in value (or whatever it is) now greed factors in

[...] every BTC I've ever spent has come back to haunt my ass. Panic'd like a small 9-year-old girl (with screams) when I sold 13 BTC last year on 12/24/19 when BTC was $3,965.00 USD. Groan! I managed to thru dumb luck equipment sales and such to get back 4 BTC from such. But it really sucks. So yeah, its a gift, my ability to sell at the wrong time or get 'dubious' ASIC equipment. The above wallet is NOT my hoard however, just what was emptied to add to such Hoard in 1 address. [...] shriek like a 9-year-old yet again). Rinse/Wash/Repeat. As you can see my 'strategy' is very sophisticated, don't ya know. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) So like 5 out of 5 selling BTC at the wrong time and never to recover vs HODL mode (soothing). So yeah, I got 'issues' with BTC your merciless bitch! heh yeah the 1st time panic mode kicks in.. welcome to the show. ive never panic sold btc but, like you, ive sorta "panic bought" things, which is basically the same. of course in 2011-2013 or so there was a lot less confidence in btc so the ability to turn majick internetz money into real stuff was an easy sell. ive looked up my prev mining addys when i gpu mined btc as i wanted to sign messages saying those addys were mine for various purposes if needed. cringworthy is an understatement as to the amount btc that i mined. ive got a small fraction left, and thats all that matters. its a win in my book. no regerts. cant stress this enough when sweeping paper wallets. sweep the ENTIRE balance in one shot. i almost got burned as habit made me sweep a fraction of the paper wallets value as a test transaction (something i regularly do when sending coin to a new wallet or whatever). luckily the wallet i swept to sent the change back to the papers address.
soon as i clicked i realized my mistake.. and i had a VERY uncomfortable wait until i could verify the change was at the original addy.
it was not fun sitting there sweating bullets wondering if i had just blown 99% of the amount in the paper wallet by sending it to a black hole or for the mining fee. rated that experience about a 2 out of 10. would not do again.

been a while and my memory has never fired on all cylinders anyway but..
i know i 1st heard about bitcoin in an anandtech forum post. probably just used a search engine after that.
EDIT: in 2011 (before forks and drama and such) a search for "bitcoin forum" only gave one result IIRC

i know what an idiot i am. thus, like a squirrel who buries nuts all over the place, i count on at least finding one good backup somewhere.
in all seriousness though the rule of 3s (i think its called) 3 backups on 2 different media, one of which is offsite. and i dont count "the cloud" as any of those.
i do rolling backups so they go back quiet a ways.
Forgive me if I've droned on about it in this thread before, but one time I had a laptop stolen with wallets for anywhere between $15k and $40k worth of coins. This was in 2015. During the peak of the bull run it was closer to $200k. I did make a backup indeed; however, my backup was on a USB stick contained in the laptop case, which was also stolen. ![Roll Eyes](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif) I can look up my coin addresses in their respective block explorers, and see my balances just sitting there, laughing at me. I guess the moral of the story is, don't keep your backups all in one place, and yes, the offsite idea is a good one. There's no shame in burying your nuts in different places. oh man that is The Suck ![Sad](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/sad.gif) another thing i do is keep several (at least) old versions of important files offline and dont discard them as you never know if any particular file has become corrupt and backing up that corrupt file replacing the non corrupt one sucks a lot too. ive build my latest nas with ECC memory (that scubs daily) and the ZFS filesystem that scubs the filesystem (timing varies on the pool). it also keeps old versions of any changed file for a period of time, again varies on the pool. the nas is of course backed up regularly and the backups are kept offline. the 3-2-1 rule is no joke. i learned my lesson way back. i theory this protects against ransomware are well as idiot users like myself.

(I know backing up is for coward pussies but still I beg to differ)

im out of btc miners entirely for that reason: anything that might be profitable is not usable in my house. too loud (not that big a deal to a point), too power hungry - needs to be configurable to some figure, say, 500 watts or so. this figure would allow spacing rigs out in ones home too, both to spread waste heat out to manageable levels (no need for industrial fans and large scale heat management when 500 watts per room is all that needs to be dissipated) and no need for dedicated 120/240v line for every miner. hey i loved mining on gpu/early FPGA/early ASICs. donated to both -ck and kano for their work on cgminer. but now? i mine shitcoins with gpu/FPGA to exchange for btc. which does nothing to secure the network ![Sad](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/sad.gif) yes, i realize that btc mining now is vastly different and its for the "big boys" now. fine. but to run even ONE decent btc miner at home now? probably have to run another dedicated electric line and build some sort of special space with soundproofing and ventilation/ducting. lower noise, lower power units that can be spread around the home.. is it that hard to do? genuine question. i would love to have a home friendly btc miner back in the home. mining shitcoins just seems... dirty heh.

The difficult solution: Add some codes that deny access to these permissions.
how would that work? any links or such?
|
|
|
ive preserved my local history. as in i have saved countless screen shots of the pools i mined at (logs, hashrates, miner payouts), exchanges, receipts of mining hardware, pictures of my gear. printed a lot of that out too.
did it mainly to prove where and when i got my btc. in this heavily KYCd country (USA) one will surely need to prove where that btc came from. and where the money to buy miners and btc came from too.
so, i did it mainly for myself in case i ever need to prove where my sats came from.

Yeah, that's exactly the problem. The grace period makes it difficult to really know if I a post has been edited right after being posted.
It seems no one really knows how to detect it.
as soon as the person posts here have archive.org capture it? and use the archive shot as proof of unaltered post? EDIT: meh could just send several i guess, and link the one they want.

you have no fear that CSWs insane mind will finish its decent into lunacy and utterly destroying whatever you think bsv is?
No. Users are not forced to accept new versions of SW. Anyone is free to continue using the previously existing version. This nullifies any threat. Of course, it is likely that nChain is a significant miner, which does lead to some exposure in this regard. But Craig does not hold exclusive chains of power in that organization, and others there are not suicidal. So, somewhat mitigated. does csw know about this? he would most likely sue them and take his own devs to court if they ignore his decisions. or split from bsv if they dont listen. just extrapolating this on observed past behavior. anyway as you say they dont have to follow so it will be intersting as to how long bsv puts up with him.

heh yeah ive never used airport or hotel charger ports, i always bring my own battery banks and cable (for on the go) and bring my own wall powered usb chargers, usually just need quality extrnally powered hub as most support hi speed charging protocols on some/all ports.
with supply chain attacks happening more and more sooner or later compromised cables will be out in the wild, if not there already. i never use cable that come with hardware wallets any more; they go into the trash (overly paranoid? you bet!). im sure theyre fine, but my philosophy is you cant be too prepared, especially in security.
i plan on whipping up a bunch of self built usb 2,(whatever) cables purely for my own peace of mind.

yes, trezor and other hardware wallets that you confirm addys and amounts are the same as the computer displays prevent most attacks.
i also lump in "badusb" type stuff that may not target the wallet, but want to inject malware to that machine, hoping to get other data. should of been more clear, my bad.
i have looked into just buying bulk usb cable and connectors. probably make some just for piece of mind.
EDIT: nice site, bookmarked.

of course. i tested all setting before the wife used it. hint: do not use Turbo unless you really, REALLY mean it.

I spent some time in Japan recently and learned that most toilets come with drinking fountains. This is truly ingenious. ![](https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FCruBK2z.jpg&t=663&c=0U28AZN0FktxVQ) you would NOT want to drink from any toilet i use. actually you wouldnt want to drink water anywhere within 30 feet or so. rough estimate that, i may give a safer minimum distance later also, as a side remark, our bidets main controls are on remotes. the controls on the bidet itself are just a basic backup (wash/dry)

There is only one reason why the changes BSV is undergoing are bringing it closer to Satoshi's "original protocol". CSW will pay Kleiman Estate in BSV claiming these are kind of bitcoins he and Dave Kleiman mined using Satoshi's original protocol.
An even better conspiracy theory I heard on Twitter is that Craig is positioning himself to convince the BSV miner crowd to fork over control of all Satoshi-mined coins to himself. I mean, hey, he's Satoshi to them after all, so why wouldn't they? like what the genesis upgrade is a step toward? i saw a bit in the spec about special rules on utxo over a certain age. although i cant code for jack, this sounds like a great way to assign any bsv he wants to himself.
|
|
|
It is irrelevant whether or not CSW is Satoshi precisely because the changes BSV is undergoing are bringing it closer to Satoshi's original protocol. We don't need Craig to dictate the direction because the whitepaper exists and because bitcoind 0.1 exists. We can read.
you have no fear that CSWs insane mind will finish its decent into lunacy and utterly destroying whatever you think bsv is? he will take it over and corrupt it at some point (some say even now); his fragile ego will demand it. if that clown were gone at least people would concentrate on its technical merits, if any.
