2421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Anybody tried running lightning node on bitcoin blockchain? on: January 10, 2018, 06:47:23 PM
I've set up a lightning node on the Bitcoin testnet following this guide: https://medium.com/@jadmubaslat/bitcoin-lightning-network-node-easy-setup-tutorial-for-windows-desktop-users-a-how-to-guide-9937b5a8a669
The author of that article is completely right in saying that it wasn't really hard to set up and you can do so in Windows.

Just took me around 40 minutes to get everything configured right and working.

How do you find the experience (especially without segwit)?
Currently LN software only work when segwit is activated. There is no "without segwit".

Yeah, I was also a bit surprised to see that bit...
2422  Other / Serious discussion / Re: The scaling solution on: January 10, 2018, 06:35:34 PM
As fees are high right now and have been this way for quite some time now, it seems like Bitcoin is becoming very expensive to use for everyday stuff.
My worry is that it will stay this way at least until Bitcoin Core starts fully supporting segwit, which is supposed to be in May in version 0.16, if I am not mistaken?
I want to hear serious objective opinions on this situation, without any finger pointing.

Primarily the issue I am seeing is that very dedicated users who tried to build Bitcoin into a widespread standard currency used in everyday life are now perhaps dependent to some extent on Bitcoin being used for such purposes., as some are selling their products for Bitcoin so they can increase the adoption.
Also some might be buying certain products in Bitcoin exclusively, but they are likely to be able to switch more easily, unlike merchants.

I do like Lightning Network and segwit as solutions for the scaling problem, but it seems to be taking some time and that is probably hurting our most dedicated users. Perhaps having a quick solution that is simple to implement is not that bad. May is still 4 months away and it is always possible for deadlines to increase.

Are you using segwit already? I'm not trying to be passive aggressive or anything, a genuine question...
You can already create a segwit address with the latest versions of Electrum and I'd suggest you do so if you want to pay lower fees.

Change starts with yourself Wink
2423  Other / Serious discussion / Re: How to end the "BTC Civil War" before it gets worse? on: January 10, 2018, 06:32:35 PM
The reason we are in this situation is because the people who claim they are supporting Satoshi vision only care about controlling bitcoin even though they have enough money to simply not care, as soon as BCH came to life, we started to see more useless forks each few weeks. There are a lot of things that currently need development such as Schnorr, TumbleBit, MAST, LN etc. so instead of putting efforts into destroying bitcoin, they could've put their knowledge into something more useful.

If also services such as Coinbase stop saying nonsense like 'our users didn't request SegWit', that would be nice. If they only implement it, It would help the network and also help them save millions of dollars in fees for the long term but they are clearly colluding to bring bitcoin down.

Yeah, the first thing the community should focus on is getting segwit adoption growing...
If everyone started using segwit, the mempool would significantly reduce in size and everyone would benefit from it.

I'm already trying to use my segwit address as much as possible and I definitely notice a difference in how much fees I'm paying.

Schnorr signatures are the next step IMO, together with segwit they would mean a very significant reduction in transaction sizes.
Does anyone know how far along the development of that is? Or where I can follow development?
2424  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Stuck transaction (185 satoshi per byte) for two days on: January 10, 2018, 06:09:14 PM
You can still try to use ViaBTC's free accelerator, but you should pick the right time to try.
Slots are open every hour, so you'd need to find when they are reset, I suppose once every hour.

https://pool.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/

Here's another way to accelerate your transaction with antpool:

FYI, these methods are free.

2425  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Fair online casino? on: January 10, 2018, 04:49:15 PM
The most obvious answers have already been given in this thread.
I.e. Casinos with a long standing good reputation and being established for a long time are really important qualities that you should look for.

Another thing I tend to look for is how transparent they are in with their profit and loss numbers on all the games they offer.
Those numbers should be in line with the house edge, over a long period of time at least.

They also get trusted if they process payments instantly, then there's pretty much no risk that you're going to get scammed.

Crypto-Games has all those features Wink

why Microsoft Removes Bitcoin as Payment Option for Microsoft Storew?
Yeah, I've seen this news in a article in https://cointelegraph.com/news/microsoft-removes-bitcoin-as-payment-option-for-microsoft-store saying that microsoft removed bitcoin as payment due to its volatility. Maybe Bill Gates is right because as we had experienced this last year before new year, bitcoin's price really is volatility as it really goes down, and as a company CEO, Bill Gates cannot afford to take risk particularly in a company.

I had already replied ITT that they have re-enabled Bitcoin payments, but news websites are posting different articles about the outcome.

Have a look:
http://www.news.com.au/finance/business/technology/microsoft-restores-bitcoin-payments-after-working-to-ensure-lower-amounts-would-be-redeemable/news-story/1c875957f470944709497dcfa6ec5fd2 (16 hours ago)

I think they did resume Bitcoin payments in the end. Can anyone confirm this perhaps?

Here's a statement from Microsoft as to why they reinstated Bitcoin payments again:
Quote
In a statement to news.com.au on Wednesday, a Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the suspension but said the service had now been restored.
We’ve restored bitcoin as a payment option in our store after working with our provider to ensure lower bitcoin amounts would be redeemable by customers,” she said
2427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Microsoft Removes Bitcoin on: January 10, 2018, 12:39:19 PM
Huh, I thought they re-enabled Bitcoin payments again? I must admit that they're changing it back and forth so fast that it's a bit difficult to follow...
Just read this article about an hour ago: https://www.coindesk.com/microsoft-resumes-bitcoin-payments-after-halt-over-instability/

I think Microsoft is the last company we want using it as a service. We want these huge companies to stay away

Why? I think it's a good thing that large corporations are beginning to accept Bitcoin. Can't have mass adoption if Bitcoin isn't accepted as a payment method on a large scale.
2428  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why people keep trying new casinos? on: January 10, 2018, 12:26:46 PM
I personally stick to casinos that I already know and trust. Promotions or bonuses aren't enough to convince me to go to another casino, because they usually have rollover requirements that are way too difficult to overcome.

Other people are probably a lot more gullible and they'd switch if a new casino is giving out 'big' sign-up bonuses, which are probably impossible to cash out without depositing first.
Or perhaps they are looking for certain games that are not available in the casino they're currently playing at.

Why would you switch if you're playing in a casino that you already like and know is provably fair etc.?

Is there a timeline for re-opening the investment option to new users?
Currently we don't have plan to re-open investments anytime soon.

Do you have any plans to also close investments to existing users if the bankroll continues to grow to even higher levels?
I can imagine that there might be a few investors that are now taking 'advantage' of this situation by making larger investments than they would have normally...
2430  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: I have only 200€ to invest on: January 09, 2018, 06:04:15 PM
If I were you, I'd definitely be looking into buying some cheaper coins, just so you can diversify a bit more.
Spending everything just on Litecoin and not even being able to buy 1 LTC does,'t sound like a good idea.

Just spend some time looking on Coinmarketcap for coins that are a bit more affordable for you.
I can't really give you any advice on which ones to buy, just do your research on the coin in question.

Thanks!

OP, you've written the exact same article on Medium, you have to be careful with just copy pasting it here. In this case, I don't think you did it with bad intent, since you are the original author.
You should at least add the source and make sure you do add some original comments in the original post.

2432  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Minecraft and cryptocurrencies on: January 09, 2018, 01:18:04 PM
Hey guys, what would you think of building a roleplay minecraft server on top of a Blockchain with a currency. It would be a roleplay server, where you can earn currency by working inside the game, or trading items, building stuff, would be the ingame currency. This currency in a future could be exchanged with bitcoin.

I`m not an expert, but i think that you would have to ask the Minecraft creators for permission ,before implementing such crypto version of that game.Anyway,i`ve always wanted cryptocurrency mining to be more like a game and not just a bunch of complex math calcuation tasks.I like the consept of blockchain+gaming, but we would have to create a genuine game, not Minecraft.

That's completely false, you can implement this by making a mod or server without getting Mojang's permission and it has been done before.
I think there is even a server that's still online that has an in-game economy that's denominated in Bitcoin.

https://www.coindesk.com/kid-friendly-minecraft-server-launches-bitcoin-economy/
http://bitquest.co/ -- still exists

I think it's a great idea OP, but the server itself should be fun to play, without the Bitcoin aspect.

I'm Dutch so I most often sell my bitcoin at bitonic for euro. Smiley

Did it 2 times already.

Belgian here and I usually do the same if I'm pressed for time, their service is excellent and the money is on my bankaccount the same day, because I have the same bank as them.
If I have enough time, I usually go with Kraken because their fees are way lower.

Bitonic does charge a lot of fees and they've also raised their minimum withdraw quite a bit, was at 500 euros at one point in time even, now it's 'just' at 100 euros.

2437  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Decentralized Exchange $ Trading Platform? on: January 08, 2018, 05:20:43 PM
1. Would you try a brand new platform or just pass it up because you're not sure if it's legit or a scam?
That really depends on a lot of factors for me, I mean I pick exchanges because they're trustworthy, have a nice interface to work with and because they have reasonable fees.
Your platform would have to be pretty established before I'd consider using it.

Also, you mention building a decentralized exchange in your title, but your post doesn't seem to indicate this?

2. What other features do you wish was in the existing platforms?
I'm pretty happy with the features in all of the platforms I'm currently using. I'm using Kraken and Bittrex.

3. If you have Tech skills would you be interested in joining in on this venture? ( Will be registered as a LLC )
Sorry, not interested in that.
2438  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sharing my CS:GO bets! [0/0] Profit: +/- on: January 08, 2018, 03:59:02 PM
Counter strike is a big game, alot more then just teenage market.   The game has been around since 1999 so its hardly going to contain just teenage boys, some of them werent alive when it was first made.

I wasn't trying to belittle anyone that plays Counter-Strike or the general demographics of the people it attracts. I was just saying that most people around here, even with 1999 being the original release, are uninterested in computer games or video games at all for that matter. A lot of users find that there is no interest when discussing, selling or offering services surrounding video-games; most are more interested in cryptography or something else that doesn't allow for much free time in terms of pursuing a video-game seriously.  I know plenty of grown adults that are hardworking, bill-paying home-owners that play Counter-Strike and watch the events live.

I actually think that there is a certain demographic here on this forum that does enjoy CS:GO betting, but it's probably just a smaller niche.
Still, I've come across quite a few topics here in the gambling section asking about CS:GO betting with Bitcoin or asking about betting on e-sports in general.

This topic certainly won't have as much interest as regular sportsbetting threads, but I do think OP should post his picks anyway, there's going to be at least some interest.
2439  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: BitcoinWiki.org – online encyclopedia about cryptocurrencies and blockchain on: January 08, 2018, 03:43:21 PM
Website looks nice and up-to-date with newest/upcoming bitcoin technology, but looks like some of the articles comes from https://en.bitcoin.it/ which is similar with your website. Is it mirror of that website?
Regardless, it's good website. But i suggest you to make the source more clear.
Thank you for your opinion! It could be that some paragraphs are similar to those that are published at en.bitcoin.it, because articles on our website are created by real people.
en.bitcoin.it is not a mirror of bitcoinwiki.org. We are completely new project that uses open wiki-markup. The main difference between that project and ours is that we try to edit articles to make them easier to read to ordinary people. Our goal as it was mentioned is educating people, not making another website for geeks Smiley

Also replying to this comment then Wink

It definitely shouldn't be a problem if you copy parts of articles from the Bitcoin.it wiki, as long as you give clear attribution to them and indicate where changes have been made. Their articles are licensed under 'CC BY 3.0' (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/), which is one of the most permissive CC licenses.

I can't really say that I agree with your vision that your project makes articles easier to read for ordinary people.
A wiki isn't really suitable for that, it's always a bit more targeted towards technical or more experienced users. Wouldn't a regular website or blog work better for that purpose?

Anyway, I still think it's a good thing that you're trying to make this information more accessible, just not fully convinced of the method, that's all.
2440  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: BitcoinWiki.org – online encyclopedia about cryptocurrencies and blockchain on: January 08, 2018, 03:12:51 PM
Is there any reason why you decided to start an entirely new Bitcoin wiki, instead of adding to the existing one (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page)?
Not saying that I think it's a bad idea or anything like that... I'm just a bit curious why you decided to build a completely new one Smiley

By the way, the other Bitcoin wiki still has a lot more information than yours, it'll be a while before you catch up to them.
Their pages are also way more in depth, I noticed after reading a few.
