If you feel like you need a break, go ahead! I'm sure it will do you more good than bad. What can you lose by not gambling? An opportunity. But it's an opportunity to win just as it is an opportunity to lose. It's sometimes better to rethink the strategy while doing something else.

I'm wondering why it is that you got bored with poker, especially if you used to be good at it and moved to roulette. Roulette seems to be a much more boring game and a game where you can't influence the odds during the game. It's a bet - roll game, like dice and slots, while poker allows you to adapt along the way.

I wouldn't call gambling a real opportunity though. People who have the mindset that they can use gambling to make money, typically see it as an opportunity.
Sure, it's true that some people actually can reach +EV at certain games, like poker, but on the flip side there are many more people who end up losing more than they gain.

Well, in contrast to poker, roulette offers you an immediate dopamine hit after you've placed your bet.
With poker it's a much more delayed effect, requiring you to sit and wait multiple turns before you get that dopamine hit.
For me, I just wasn't interested in the game anymore, because I felt like I could be spending that time doing something more meaningful.
1442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: UNICEF is now accepting donations in Bitcoin and 8 altcoins on: September 20, 2018, 08:56:10 AM
That's great news! I always wonder why there aren't more NGOs that accept crypto for donations.
Seems easy enough to offer and I would think they want as many people to donate as possible. Makes sense to offer a lot of options.

Since you work there, do you have access to any statistics regarding how much has been donated with crypto?

Just a quick update for the Manna project:

I've received this news via e-mail through their newsletter, but I haven't been able to find any other press release online.

Partnership With Stanford
Code the Change

We are excited to announce that the leaders of the Stanford University chapter of Code the Change have decided to work with us during the 2018-2019 academic year. They are planning to recruit 8 computer science students who will each volunteer 5-10 hours per week to improve Mannabase.com, Manna wallets, and more.

As many of you know, most of the work done on the Manna project has been volunteer based. We are honored to have these talented students working on our project to help make the Manna vision a reality.

Founded at Stanford University, Code the Change gives computer science students the opportunity to work on projects that are creating positive social change. Working with Manna is a perfect fit and we can't wait to get started!

I'm really glad that they're finally going to update the manna wallets. Though I also think it's kinda weird that they have to rely on students to issue updates to the platform.
I think development for Manna is rather slow, so I'm wondering how many actual coders they do have working regularly on the project.
1444  Economy / Economics / Re: We can totally eradicate poverty if we TRULY want to. on: September 19, 2018, 11:39:38 AM
Giving money to the poor can only help in a short amount of time it doesn't improve their lives in the long run because you don't know what are they going to do with the money. This is the risk when helping people so others turn to charities but helping charities has its own risk too because you can't track everything and what they're going to do with the money (lack of transaprency).

Other poor people rely heavily on the government for their needs instead of relying on their own. They've accepted their fate living in a poor lifestyle and doesn't want to change for the better. With that being said we can't eliminate poverty, reducing it is one way to maintain/improve the problem from getting worse.

That's simply not true, there have been experiments that have shown quite the opposite.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/free-money-might-be-the-best-way-to-end-poverty/2013/12/29/679c8344-5ec8-11e3-95c2-13623eb2b0e1_story.html?utm_term=.be4929fcefc1

Quote
In May 2009, a small experiment involving 13 homeless men took off in London. Some of them had slept in the cold for more than 40 years. The presence of these street veterans was far from cheap. Police, legal services, health care: Each cost taxpayers thousands of pounds every year.

That spring, a local charity decided to make the street veterans — sometimes called rough sleepers — the beneficiaries of an innovative social experiment. No more food stamps, food-kitchen dinners or sporadic shelter stays. The 13 would get a drastic bailout, financed by taxpayers. Each would receive 3,000 pounds (about $4,500), in cash, with no strings attached. The men were free to decide what to spend it on.

The only question they had to answer: What do you think is good for you?

“I didn’t have enormous expectations,” an aid worker recalled a year later. Yet the homeless men’s desires turned out to be quite modest. A phone, a passport, a dictionary — each participant had ideas about what would be best for him. None of the men wasted his money on alcohol, drugs or gambling. A year later, 11 of the 13 had roofs over their heads. (Some went to hostels; others to shelters.) They enrolled in classes, learned how to cook, got treatment for drug abuse and made plans for the future. After decades of authorities’ fruitless pushing, pulling, fines and persecution, 11 vagrants moved off the streets.

Something similar in Finland, they are giving free homes to homeless people (unconditionally):
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/apr/12/finland-homelessness-rough-sleepers-britain

Then there's also the idea of giving an unconditional basic income to people, that would completely eradicate poverty if implemented worldwide.
Even now there's a huge number of bullshit jobs that could very well be done by a robot in the future.

We really won't be able to provide jobs for everyone, so I see it as beyond inevitable that some form of benefits or basic income is granted to citizens.
1445  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Your Whitepaper is copied,What do you think about the white paper plagiarism? on: September 19, 2018, 10:38:33 AM
At least it makes it pretty easy to recognize them as scams. Though I think there are still too many people who would fall for that.
The whitepapers you've listed aren't really the best examples of whitepapers though. I think I wouldn't even invest in the original projects they came from.

Update:

Anything that's raised above 50k will be added to the prize pools of future tournaments.
I think this is a very cool feature of this game, you can enter into official tournaments and win prizes in Steem currency.

I've heard in their video that each tournament will have prize pools of around $1000 worth of Steem.

Unfortunately, the website on the link you posted above is not working: "The Steem Monsters website is currently down for maintenance"
But, could you specify what is the core benefit of that game (except just playing for fun)?

The website should work again, there was an issue with the Steem blockchain, so that might have been the cause of the website not loading.

It's a trading card game on the Steem blockchain, you can collect Steem Monster cards and eventually you can battle against each other in tournaments.
Some of the cards already have a really high monetary value, as you can see in that second screenshot in the OP

So, it's kind of an investment, just as Magic the Gathering is an investment for some people.
Cards are actually selling for these high prices, you can check out sales on this website: https://peakmonsters.com/explorer

Lol not a fan of these junk crypto campaigns, sell $100k+ before the game is even released, absolute joke in my opinion.

A huge part of it is already launched and ready for production though, it's not like this is just a proof of concept.
The trading aspect is already fully developed and the gameplay aspects are going to be launched in a month or so.
1447  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Taking a break from gambling on: September 18, 2018, 08:44:25 AM
I may not quit indefinitely, but probably a bit more than just a couple of months yeah.
Not having any issues with it, which probably means that I was not actually addicted or anything Tongue

It may also be more about the time I lost with it, than the money. Getting a lot more things done now it seems.

Curious what kind of games do you play.  Is it sports, ponies, dice, table games, poker, strip poker...?  Grin

Anyway, I get it.  And yeah, you should prolly take a break.  I was into online poker back in the day.  There were sessions when I played nonstop all thru the night...  Sometimes, it would continue into the day time, with me missing my classes.  Lol.

I usually played roulette, not really any particular strategy or anything although I did bet on single numbers most of the time.
Maybe some slots occasionally, but was never really into that.

Haven't played poker in a long time myself, used to be pretty good at it (for an amateur), but I eventually got bored of it.

I'd probably stop my break if I was offered a game of strip poker though Cheesy

This is a very inspiring story about quitting gambling and even starting to earn some money! You are saying it's easy, but I suppose it means that you weren't really addicted to it. From what I read an addicted person is often not even able to admit the presense of a problem. People are gamling because of lacking comfort or some intense emotions in their real life. Computer games seem like a good alternative, but I think that it can also lead to upleasant addiction, so take it easy. Doing sports might be a nice alternative to make one feel excited, while connecting with people can help with loneliness. I found this article very useful on this topic: https://www.helpguide.org/articles/addictions/gambling-addiction-and-problem-gambling.htm.
Let's hope we don't ever become addicted to gambling.
Good luck!

Yeah I don't think I was actually addicted yet, but it could have been the case if I didn't quit now perhaps.

Adding that link to the OP, in case someone needs it. Thanks for adding that!

Doesn't he need his car the next couple of months? Does he have a job or is he just planning to wait until 1 Bitcoin = 500k USD?
Sounds like an extremely stupid idea to spend money that you couldn't do without.

Initially I thought it might be a troll, but there are more unbelievable stories than this one.
People selling all their belongings for Bitcoin or taking out huge loans during ATH.
1450  Economy / Gambling discussion / Taking a break from gambling on: September 17, 2018, 11:16:33 AM
Lately I felt that I've been gambling a bit too much, it evolved into a weekly event where I would spend a little bit more money than I had originally planned for.
I've decided to take a break from gambling for a while, it's been 3 weeks since my last bet.

Just wanted to make this post in case someone else has any problems with this, spending more than intended, I mean.
You just kinda get into the habit without noticing at first, but you should really take immediate action when you do.

For me it was just a couple of hundred euros overspending, maybe for a month or so.
Taking a break was pretty easy, just replaced the gambling with a bit more gaming and writing articles.

Having a bit of extra cash now as well, always comes in handy Smiley

Definitely share your experiences with this, if you have any.

i see most major internet player within a few years starting redistribution of tokenized dividends to user as marketing argument (wouldnt come as a surprise to me if telegram will be one of the first), otherwise other competitors using redistribution will canibalize those major players.

Redistribution of profits would be an interesting concept to witness, but I'm doubtful that major players would want to do that. They already control the majority of the market (Facebook, Google Etc.) without sharing their profits, so they have no incentive to start doing so.

Sure, these companies will probably issue their own tokens in the future and they may share (give away) those tokens with their customers. I just don't think they'll share any actual profit though.

Our new hardware can better handle large amount of bets so we have decide to lower dice speed limit for 30%.

Change starts with 15.9.

That's great! Now I just have to figure out why the fuck Chrome keeps getting those "Snap!" messages every 5 hours or so on your website.
That's strange. I have website opened for almost 24 hours per day without any issues. are you running autobet when you get a "snap" message?

Yes, it's always on autobet. Once every a few hours I get that "Snap!" thing and have to refresh the page.
This is probably not a website issue but the browser caches/indexDb's. Trying refreshing it with CTRL+SHIFT+R (hard refresh) which would delete the cached build files which work most of the time.

I tried that and still have the same problem, I'll try with another browser.

If it keeps happening with Chrome, check all your extensions one by one, by disabling them and trying again.
This issue didn't get solved by clearing your cache, I think it's likely that it's caused by an extension.

An adblocker might be the culprit here, I've had my fair share of issues with some of them.

I have to stop phone browsing almost missed that UBI Gofundme.

Those draws look appealing, especially if the project gets off the ground. I am tempted to get myself some cool shades, but the link to the picture is missing lol.

Watching the trailer it looks like if the goal is reached they will have a polished video. If it is going to help convert naysayers though they will need to focus a portion of the video separating fact from fiction. I'm sure they can find someone to play devils advocate, so that it isn't easily dismissed as propaganda.

Oh lol, I already forgot about that, I was planning to donate at least enough for an entry into the raffle.
I should also do some promotion on my Steemit account, I really hope they reach their target.

I mean, you see crowdfunding for a lot of useless stuff that gets millions, without even having a working product.
Manna is already up and running and they barely reached $4000

They are up and running but still seem to lack a solution for sybil attacks and have also obvious issues with centralisation. i wouldnt buy it but also wonder how low people sell it, i mean they still have a chance to change a lot and recive more trust. Trust will be a main source of value in cryptoubi.

Yeah that's true, I do hope they will find a solution for that, they've indicated on Reddit that this is something they plan to improve in the future.
https://www.reddit.com/r/MannaCurrency/comments/7txwtu/now_available_manna_whitepaper_wallets_and_more/

I can't help thinking that we only need one basic income.  Doesen't having so many different projects make it harder for any one to succeed?

I don't think it makes it harder for other projects to succeed. It would be very very difficult to be able to coordinate one single global basic income.
Not enough research has been done and the whole concept of a crypto-based UBI is completely new.

You'd need many different projects to test out their vision of issuing basic income through cryptocurrency.
Some will fail, some might have some merit to them, but without trial and error we'd not progress at all.

Also, with just one basic income, that's one single point of failure. I'd rather have many different solutions.
1455  Other / Meta / Re: sMerit participants – a worrying descending trend (!/?) on: September 15, 2018, 03:33:04 PM
I've almost run out of sMerit myself, now I kinda wish I hadn't merited a lot of those overview threads or the many historic threads, since they might have received a bit too much.
Especially in cases where the author isn't even active anymore on the forum.

I try to focus more on giving out merit for posts that have helped me personally.
Could be anything really, even if it's just an interesting article someone's posted.
1456  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Steem Monsters Kickstarter is Successful! [First Profit Added!!] on: September 14, 2018, 12:02:23 PM

Steem Monsters, a trading card game in the Steem blockchain, has reached their goal of $50.000 in just under a week after launching their Kickstarter.
They've now raised more than $150.000 in total from the Kickstarter and alpha card pack sales.

They're currently one of the most popular Dapps on the Steem blockchain and people are already selling their cards for thousands of dollars.

1457  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's your Opinion about Airgeadcoin on: September 14, 2018, 11:54:40 AM
Why do they need an ICO for that? Doesn't seem that interesting to me, all I see is that they have a proof of concept, without any sort of working product.
Any investment into this would be considered extremely risky.

They are going to develop a system where you can send them your precious metals and they'll store them for free.
Yeah, I wouldn't want to trust a random company with any sort of valuable items, they have absolutely no experience with this.

In exchange, you'll basically get IOU's and you can then trade those?

No thanks...
1458  Economy / Economics / Re: If the stocks market will crash again like 2008, what will happen to bitcoin on: September 14, 2018, 11:41:33 AM
Bitcoin can't be considered as a good alternative for investments, huge investors don't like huge risks, 1% movement is a lot for them and it happens daily on bitcoin. It can even decrease by 10% or rise the same in one day. Also there are a lot of plans to recover from market crashes but just imagine why will stock holders invest money in bitcoin? It's a question of doubt but I highly believe that won't happen.
Btw if they would invest in bitcoin in 2008 year, it would be a huge success for them.
It's not as bad as you think it is. Investors can and likely will go by allocating 1-5% of their portfolio to Bitcoin in order to hedge risks of the traditional market. It's the best way to move forward, especially in today's world.

The stock market is boiling around all time high levels with insane valuation ratios. Historically, the traditional market doesn't keep going up endlessly. It cycles through various phases and the next one is the correction.

It probably will result in a bear market lasting a year or two at the very least. The stock market is really a ticking time bomb as we speak, and it's waiting for the first institutions to unload billions worth of stocks triggering a domino effect.

Indeed, I do think more investors might start to see cryptocurrency investments as a relative safe haven, if the stock market experiences another severe crash.
With how things are going currently, I wouldn't be too surprised if we witnessed another big crash soon.

Turkey's currency is about to collapse and a lot of European countries rely on a strong Lira.

After that, there will be a domino effect taking more nations with it.
1459  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: My account hacked coins stolen ; any advise on: September 14, 2018, 11:22:49 AM
First of all, try to find out how they got access to your wallet.

Check your system for any malware, trojans in specific that might have access to your clipboard or have a keylogger installed.
Also check your browser history to see if you've ever logged in through a phishing website.

What wallet are you using with Etherscan?  Ethereum Wallet, Parity Wallet, MyCrypto, MyEtherWallet or Metamask?
One of my friends told me that if telegram chat is left open ; hackers can attack using telegram.  Is it true?

No, that doesn't seem like something that would be possible.
Really most hacking is due to user error, logging in through a fake website or downloading software that contains malware.

Another scenario could be installing a malicious browser plugin.
1460  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: MixerList - The Bitcoin mixer list on: September 14, 2018, 11:10:21 AM
LOL I just looked at your mixer submission guidelines and on bullet point 4 you just ask whether the service is a scam or not.

Quote
4. Is scam / is not scam

Isn't it your job to weed out the scams and why would anyone ever want to submit a scam and tell you about it.
There's no point adding scams to your list unless you are going to clearly indicate they're scams.

I just wouldn't list scams at all though.
