no one is saying that Russell brand should become the next UK prime minister or anything to equal power of government leader, but if anyone had the fame to grab the media's attention with just one single tweet or a single statement said into a microphone, that 'joe public' would atleast want to hear, can you think of many others.

for instance arnold Schwarzenegger he has alot of friends in politics still he would be a good motivator for the US revolution, brand as the UK motivator. by this i mean these guys would motivate and organise protests but not become the countries leaders.

now if there was one guy that was to shout out to media "visit this government petition website and if we get X million signatures, then the government has to change"

who can you think of that could get that much publicity, and belief that the campaign is real in such a small timescale?
27942  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Bitcoins should be renamed to burying. on: November 01, 2013, 02:38:21 PM
well talking about carbon waste.. im not wasting carbon. in the UK it is getting cold and so usually i would have my electric heaters on. each heater is 1000W. my avalon miners are only 600W, yet im sat here nice and comfortable without having my electric heaters on.

so i am saving carbon compared to last year by using less electric to heat my place. and i am making money to pay for all my bills.. this is better then solar power for me, especially as we dont get much sun.
27943  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best way to store and forget btc? on: November 01, 2013, 02:30:08 PM
etch the private key into a piece of metal.. EG like dog tags. then store them safely.

paper doesnt have to burn, it only needs to become sooted, brown or crumble to dust which can happen at lower temperatures then a direct flame

going with the gold scenario of the old west..
gold miners would never sell the average amount of gold they get per day for anything less then a day's works costs + a little extra for pleasure costs
EG if they only get 1gram of gold a day then they would price that gold at enough to cover their days worth of food, drink, materials etc. and would never sell less then that price. if they ever did, they might aswell give up..
so true value prices (the LOW price) will always be around the minimal cost of living and working on creating gold/bitcoin.
at the moment the last 6 months have shown $70 is the low point in july and with new asics causing miners to get less coins, means its costing them more to mine, which has caused the LOW of september being $109..
anyone willing to sell less then $109 in september is either not a miner and would sell for anything in a panic.. or more simply, dont care about bitcoins in the first place.
they key when trying to track true value is to always look at the monthly LOW's. anything else is just speculation and profiteering

Your argument assumes that the only people selling bitcoins/gold are the miners. That is not the case, so fewer miners does not mean less gold/bitcoin for sale, and whether miners can make a profit or not has no effect on the price.

my argument assumes there is a tail off of a large amount of people willing to sell, and then there are smaller amount of people that would sell cheaper because to them they dont see bitcoin as having a cost value to them, the way a miner would.. and so theses non miners would still sell at a silly lower then average price, purely due to panic.

but due to the majority having the smarts to know the average miner costs etc, they collectively refuse to sell lower.. thus the price didnt tank to 2c in the last year..

Side-stepping the opinions of Brand, or any other person for that matter.  The nice thing about bitcoin is it doesn't matter who likes it, supports it, promotes it, etc...  Bitcoin is a function of utility, and it becomes more secure, and valuable with more people using it.  If Brand promotes bitcoin, it would be no different than him promoting Mercedes, except the upside potential affects bitcoin users, not a corporation.

If Brands million+ fans decide to hop on board with bitcoin, does it matter who the spokesman is?  It's part of gaining mass adoption, and it's necessary if you want things like bitcoin to succeed.  And when I say succeed, I mean, become wildly successful.  Right now most of the conversation is centered around technically inclined people, and outright nerds (I being the latter).  That doesn't cut it among the masses.  Take Linux for example.  Great software, horrible marketing.
+1

its not all about promoting it, its also about getting it to be useful. most mindsets are about promoting people to just buy bitcoin for the sake of raising the price. i prefer the promoting side where it gets USED by the people after they have bought in.. i know it only takes at the moment nearly 12 million people to deposit £$1000 ever in their life, to lift the market cap to a £$1000 per bitcoin price. but then what.. will these 12 million people be able to buy a coffee at starbucks instantly.. will a forgeign worker be able to send money home to his grandparents and they understand it enough and know a sleek method of converting bitcoins back to pay their own rent and electric bills?? or better yet, convince their landlord to accept bitcoin direct?

promoting bitcoins through songs and media is not enough, there has to be some footwork done. like getting these third world banks to no longer rely on a centralised database designed by microsoft access and modified operating systems to secure the digital numbers it holds.. but to get them to use the block chain and learn how they dont have to rely on corporations or charities to aid running their banks.

now back to the russell brand subject.. name me 3 other people that are internationally recognised as being:
involved with activist stuff EG not afraid to attend protests
involved in politics EG speaking up for stuff happening relating to G-20, the third-world, warzones, etc
what comes out of their mouth is atleast more honest then any government leader would dare say on TV

would you prefer a politician that pretends he has no sexual desires in his veins, brains and DNA, a politician that denies inhaling drugs, a politician that just talks about what people want to hear, knowing after its said nothing changes
while later it comes to light he is a recovering drug addict and a womaniser.

or would you prefer a person that actually speaks his mind openly, that doesn't hide behind what nanny states call inappropriate and doesnt have its hands tied to 50 other politicians before a single speech or decision can be made.

i would love it if bush, clinton, or obama showed their human side.. by simply pointing at their wives and say 'i tap that, every night' we all know they do it, so why be against a human being that is not afraid to admit his previous failings with drugs and women.. i think honestly is the best policy.. and NOT policy without honesty is best

Huh?

How about neither? You seem to be stuck in the mainstream media mind of things.

On one side you have people like Clinton and Obama. On the other we have way coooool Russell Brand.... not.

Sorry mate, turn off the telly and tune out of that hogwash. Brand is a tool.

You want someone to bring positive attention to Bitcoin?

Winklevoss twins are a good start. Have the news cover the Chinese investing all their money in Bitcoin instead of US dollars.

Heck, just get some rappers to put Bitcoin in their songs, that will probably help the most, LOL.

get some rapper to make a song about bitcoin is your response to changing government or beginning a revolution?Huh

unlike eminem or other rappers that would just make a song and thats it.. who would you have in mind. and how would that actually change things long term.

now getting back to my statement, having someone the public recognise that when they say something, its atleast honest and a better step in the right direction. and then having the passion and desire to want change is the next step. russell brand isnt just saying words, he honestly does want to create change. he has alot of activism history and getting his nose into matters such as the G-20, iran and other issues..

what has marshall mathers done.. handed some food to a food bank as a promotion for his foundation, which is now a tax dodge.

as for the winklevoss twins.. they are not selling or promoting bitcoin, they are selling personal shares into their own company which they value at X amount of bitcoins.. its their attempt to cash in on the bitcoin hype, as they missed doing it with the gold or platinum hype of decades gone.

27948  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open letter to Russell Brand, asking him to join the bitcoin revolution on: October 30, 2013, 06:21:47 PM
Brand's interview was babbling idiocy. A revolutionary who has absolutely no idea how to do anything to accomplish his goals other than 'a new system.' Well gee, asshole, what makes your system any better and not worse than the system we have?

There already exist political parties who want to tax the rich more and give it to the poor, and who want to pass more laws protecting the environment.

Exactly. He is a total idiot, and I use that word sparingly.

If you ever seen his show on TV in the USA (might already be canceled), you would see what a stooge he is.

The one time I saw it he was basically asking the female guest all sexual questions when the topic being discussed, terrorism, was serious.

And the fact he dated Katy Perry, -1.

Bad taste all around.

27949  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Here is how i deal with users who steal my bitcoins on: October 30, 2013, 05:49:21 PM
It would be good if we can find a way to lower the barrier to entry for depositing actual coin some how.

The key is to keep them playing - same rule for every casino in the world. People have a funny habit of only remembering the wins, so when they see themselves taking those 3000 satoshis and gambling them all the way up to 10x the initial value they remember that, rather than the 20 times they lost it. Then, after a while of playing with the free coins, they start to think how easy it would be to do the same with their own coins - that is where you want to be as a site owner.

Keep them playing, for as long as possible.

What do you think about doing a video tutorial?

maybe. but maybe something like what you get when you play the first couple levels of a facebook game. where it has arrows or colourful flashing buttons/ borders to indicate what needs to be pressed so that its an interactive demo/tutorial so that it keeps true gamblers enjoying the game. and during this tutorial period they get their 50 minimal value bets. which the winnings don't instantly get added to a balance that is withdrawable. but the winnings are placed into a bonus pot once the trial is over and then get added into withdrawable funds once they played X amount of real bitcoin games.

thats one idea but basically if it takes atleast 2 hours of playing and risking peoples own money just to withdraw $1 dust winnings will deter the 'dust salary earners' but for genuine gamblers, knowing they have an extra bonus pot is an achievement they can aim for using real funds.

the other idea which is a totally different aproach is to have an advertisement between every bet of the tutorial stage, that kind of self funds the bet. thus your not losing any funds and the genuine gambler can move onto 'play for real' to get advantages like placing bigger bets because he is using own funds this time, and not having annoying adverts..

there are many ways to make it annoying for the dust gatherers. but i hope the idea's a few of us have given, inspire you

the list is filling up, is anyone also passing on this list to someone that can easily edit coinmaps and the other business listing pages.

it seems brighton is getting highly involved in bitcoin by the looks of it Cheesy
27951  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Here is how i deal with users who steal my bitcoins on: October 30, 2013, 03:16:50 AM
Have you considered doing what PrimeDice does? They give users 3000 satoishis which users are allowed to claim once per minute (up to a limit of 5000 satoshis). The withdrawal limit is 50,000 satoshis (0.0005 BTC) so in order to actually be able to withdraw, users need to gamble those initial fee satoshis to 16.666 times their initial value.

This event has such a low probability (less than 6%) that the maths protects them from big losses due to this giveaway, which is why they are able to offer this once per minute (obviously, they need a captcha to prevent bots from running riot on it).

Cheers, Paul.

I tried their faucet, but 3000 Satoshi but I think thats too little and I hate doing captchas. We are giving out 500,000 satoshis in for clicking a follow button, and you can actually gamble hundreds of rounds to enjoy it. Personally I don't think the people who would spend their time doing captcha for 3000 satoshis is our target customer anyway.

your target customer base should not be:
*the "dust for salary" earners, so avoid withdrawable giveaways for little/no work,(captcha/follow me/like button/subscribe button)
*those that signup just to get givaway, so making it a tutorial, lengthy 'free- play" to waste their time, as they are HIGHLY unlikely going to deposit any/much into the games anyway.
those that truly want to gamble and will return time and time again like to see a easy sign-up and a nice free-play/tutorial so they can have some fun on so a free play round tutorial games would hook more people in. plus the word of mouth spreads around better that your system is fun and slightly better odds as ur not having to reduce the odds just to cover givaways

there is no point having 20,000 'likes' if it only, in reality means that 100 people can make 200 clone accounts which never go viral to actual people

theres been too many sob stories from internet strangers these days so id reccommend she will get more results by putting it onto her facebook with 472 friends, that total will get hit fast.

doing a garage sale or a bake-off in the garden, while also having the donation jar as a top up along side the sales, would help them the most

most internet stranger campaigns only really work when its helping out big causes with multiple victims involved.

27953  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open letter to Russell Brand, asking him to join the bitcoin revolution on: October 29, 2013, 05:03:47 PM
More people would use altcoins if it was as simple as any other transaction these days, like swiping a card. It's not quite that simple for a lot of the non-techs out there. Some folks to this day avoid paypal even, and that's among the easiest systems out there.

If you could make a front end system for the 'general masses' which was super-dumbified-down, then you'd have a rush of people getting into at least using it for transactions.

totally agree, although there are App's in the works, after thinking about it, the 'silver' generation (granny) still prefer paper or plastic
27954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open letter to Russell Brand, asking him to join the bitcoin revolution on: October 29, 2013, 04:42:58 PM

Why doesn't Russell Brand start this revolution by donating his multimillion pound fortune towards erasing wealth disparity?

Oh yeah, because he's a hypocritical moron.

donating his fortune towards erasing the wealth disparity...... that sentance  made me laugh, here is why

even if 1 trillion government bank notes flew out of the rooftops of offices and rained down onto the public streets for anyone to pick up. the majority would still end up going to the rich.
even if 1 trillion government bank notes were equally divided and put into bank accounts of only the people that had less then a months salary at minimum wage saved up. it would eventually all flow back to the rich.

put short if only 500, million people were poor thats like £$2000 for each person instantly appearing in their bank. what happens, firstly social security/government benefits wil see the person has received an income and stop the benefits for a few weeks, thats maybe £$200-£$400  of food, bills and rent costs that the 'poor' person has to deduct from the win-fall. then they most likey think what can they spend the other £$1600 on that they havnt in a while.. a vacation..

so now the money is back in government hands (government housing) its in the elite richlists hands (walmart)(richard branson(virgin holidays).

now the second part of what made me laugh.

during RB's non sober days he use to not pay taxes and instead put his money into local bars (helping local economy/business) and other 'on the street' places which were not all part of the elite richlist.. so not so hypocritical, if you actually knew much about the guy.. and yes he use to party alot giving friends and family money as i he didnt care about it. helping them out

when was the last time anyone reading this blew £$100,000 on their family and friends in one night?
27955  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How much would I make if... on: October 29, 2013, 12:10:46 PM
60Ghz this week earns me 0.09 per 24 hours(actual earnings, no calculations) which is about 1.44BTC a day if it were 1 Thash

now comes the maths part

that works out that if you didnt spend any and put all of your earnings into buying more GHash, you would be putting in 14Ghash a day (196GHash every 2 weeks(under 20%)) back into the cloud

which does not cover the 30-50% difficulty change. this means it is NOT worth you endlessly buying up GHash just to TRY keep to a similar income. because you wont achieve it, your'll always be on a losing battle. unless the price per Ghash dropped significantly

id recommend you take that 1.44BTC a day (20BTC a fortnight)
then take the 0.9BTC a day (12BTC a fortnight)
and in under a year you will have ROI and hopefully something bigger and cheaper to invest in will pop up and give you better returns
27956  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Here is how i deal with users who steal my bitcoins on: October 29, 2013, 10:48:22 AM
0.005btc, dang your giving away $1 per customer, of course it will get abused. mining on a 60Ghash avalon would take a couple hours to earn $1

there are people out there that have programmed an app to sign up to some easy sign up mail service and all that is required of them is to do the captcha manually (taking 2 seconds per account).  so lets say that they can make 15 twitter accounts and follow each other in 15 minutes then that is the equivalent to a 500Ghash unit.(60$ an hour). for something of this 'reward' you will always get scammers,

instead of giving out BTC, it would be better to offer 'free rolls' not using blockchain coins.. which will reduce the withdrawals without plays, but still getting people to use your service.

make it like a tutorial/fun section, get them to play the game and learn how to use it. and once its done they qualify for 'play for real' feature where they would go back to a 0 balance and deposit their own funds.

another addition could be that if after X wins on 'play for real' they have a chance to get their 'fun/tutorial' winnings added to their 'play for real' pot, but thats something that you would have to work out

my main aim was to ask what is the update on the whole case, is it truly already over, is there an upcoming visit to court coming soon, ??

meandering off topic slightly
i used the photo's as they were taken directly from ashley shavers public FB profile with FB dating them this month. showing trendon out and about, which got me wondering what was the latest in the case?

no one uses the hidden metadata of files as gospel.. my phone still says its 1997 due to my battery going flat before i get to recharge it and/or having to swap simcards which requires removing the battery entirely. and that meta data if beleived places them in a fastfood venue at 3 in the morning... hmmm maybe not.

but anyways lets not investigate the picture as thats just meandering off topic.. what is the update on the whole case?

most giftcard for bitcoin sites are for the Yanks.. not the Brits.. so in my case its still not useful, and i know kids that prefer something in hand as a direct reward for chores. and not the whole go on computer play around with a couple websites to print out a voucher / get code sent to phone ..

family i have love seeing pennies in their little purses .. and the funniest thing.. if i gave them £1 in pennies (100 coins) they think they are receiving more then if i gave them a £1 coin. well they are all under 6yo so i cant blame them..
27960  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What my daughter thinks of Bitcoin on: October 28, 2013, 02:48:38 AM
you know what the best way is to teach her right? start paying her for chores around the house in bitcoin instead of fiat.

thats not gonna work, kids instantly cry or stop doing chores once they realise they cant instantly buy "hello kitty" socks or chocolate at walmart.
