3561  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Battery Pandemic on: October 21, 2022, 12:30:43 PM
Looks like I will have to reactivate this topic again because I see increased number of people complaining about ledger nono X devices in last few days.
This is again mostly related with bad batteries, but there are also some glitches when entering PIN codes with cycling numbers.
I don't know if this is some new batch of bad devices and batteries or something else, but it's reminder not to waste money on model X.
Ledger sure has a problem with bad quality control in their factory (village garage).

Hi I have a problem with my new Ledger nano x, pin numbers cycling after plugin usb to computer. When I somehow succeed with pin, then menu is also cycling. I've tried everything what I can find on the internet, but nothing is helping. I have also a case number: Your case id is 528530. I need help.

3562  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New and improved Trezor website on: October 20, 2022, 07:08:29 PM
Trezor has launched a new version of its official website - https://trezor.io/.
It looks very slick if you ask me. The thing I feel is missing is a dark mode. I just hate looking at all the white.
We finally agree on something, my eyes can't stand using website that are all white so I found multiple solutions to combat this problem, and Trezor website is looking great with DarkReader extension.
One more bad thing I see on their website is new price for Trezor One wallet that now cost almost 90 euros, that is way expensive if you ask me, and it's ever worse for Trezor Model T.
On positive side, new feature they recently added in Trezor Suite is buying P2P non-KYC worldwide crypto with HodlHodl.com.
3563  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PIN codes and Hardware Wallets on: October 20, 2022, 06:49:30 PM
Its not a split second delete, which should scare the crap out of users should their device do that!
That's not necessarily the case anymore, though. Nowadays, you can securely (basically, as long as state-of-the-art symmetric cryptography is not broken) 'wipe' a drive quickly, by using full disk encryption and tossing they key.
This is true for SSD drives with encryption, but I am not sure is this is the case with small devices like hardware wallets because they are not using drives but memory.
I never researched if wiping hardware wallet is deleting seed words from memory with or without encryption, but in recent times I prefer devices that deletes everything after power is turned off.
So you are basically doing reset of your wallet every time, and you can quickly import seed words with a QR code, so there is no need to have PIN codes or secure elements.
I mean there are pros and cons for everything, and I am not expecting everyone to stop using PIN codes now Smiley
3564  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: October 20, 2022, 06:34:21 PM
By the way, how are those Wasabi download numbers doing? What about their advertising? They've been pretty quiet for a while.
Maybe they are trying to stay under the radar of regulators Wink
They are active on social media, I think they went to Bitcoin Amsterdam Conference, and they started some blog writing bounty, so they are active.
I see they also added support for new Ledger Nano S plus hardware wallet in their last release, so maybe they plan to one more partnership with them.

The coins are definitely not lost forever. They sit in Gemini. Gemini can either keep them, give them to the authorities, or send it back to you.
They are certainly lost for previous owner.
It's funny how governments can do ''magic tricks'' and turn so called ''tainted'' Bitcoin into clean, and sell them in auctions.
I am sure exchanges are doing something similar in cooperation  with them.
3565  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: October 20, 2022, 06:09:52 PM
Like the OP I'm a crypto-noob living in Melbourne. A little less nooby as I did open a Binance account last year to help my son retrieve profits from some staking he'd done late 2021 when we were in what retired futures traders like moi call a dead cat bounce.
I said before and I will say it again, but first time to you, report this case to police investigators or at least contact some newspaper and tell them to write a story about this.
Maybe you will connect with all the people and look security cameras for idiots who are putting this paper crap around your area.
If this scammers are not stopped they are going to scam more people, and they will again blame Bitcoin for being scammed.  Tongue
You didn't lose a lot of money, but someone can probably send them much more.

Anyhoo, the upshot is I end up with this message on the Paymetic transaction page:
I knew it scammers are using this stupid system they used to scam people in discord for years, and I said the same thing in this topic.
Cheap looking website that imitates exchange and wallet, and domain registered not so long ago, this are all red alerts.

3566  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hodlonaut Trial on: October 20, 2022, 05:41:38 PM
Good news. So what happens to Craig now?
I am sure he is going to continue with his lawsuits with other people in other countries, because this is only related with country Norway.
Judge ruled that is lied and cheated to prove that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, so it's confirmed again he is a fraud.
He won't go in jail for sure (maybe he should) but I am expecting he is going to pay a lot of money to Hodlonaut aka Magnus now  Cheesy

Probably also a bunch of gaslighting to allege that he actually won in Norway.
Let me take a quick look at their propaganda website coingeek...title say ''Granath v Wright Oslo verdict: Hodlonaut not liable for defamation in Norway''.
They claim this is only ''Round One'' and they will continue parallel defamation case in the United Kingdom next year.
CSW can always file an appeal but I think next on line is Peter McCormack, according to them.
3567  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Forget about exchanger search! Use BestChange! on: October 20, 2022, 03:33:25 PM
As for improving the review system, it will not be upgraded soon, not earlier than the new version of the website is released, which is still under development. And light upgraded won’t change the number of displayed claims, it would be strange to expect that. The number of active claims only signals that the majority of them have been solved, and financial obligations are fulfilled.
OK thank you for explaining, at least we finally received a clear answer that new and updated review system won't be coming any time soon (if it ever comes).
I think it would be much better if you make this changes with some beta testing using real people so you can get honest feedback from actual customers.
Some members from bitcointalk forum would probably help and participate in this process.
3568  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] luty.io - Fiat to Bitcoin On-Ramp - No KYC <1000 EUR - Low Fees on: October 20, 2022, 03:11:11 PM
If you are using a VPN/SOCKS proxy/ or Tor, your transaction will be blocked by out fraud controls. You must use a real residential IP and ideally one that is near the address where the card is registered to.
So what's the point of saying you are not asking for KYC if you demand real residential IP to be used?
If that information is connected with details and address from card we can't speak about privacy any more.
I understand if you are trying to prevent abuse of your Referal Scheme, but you can just cancel that for suspicious IP's instead of doing total ban.

Trying to make payments on a French card using an an American IP from a well known VPN provider, will not work
You think it's impossible that someone from France is traveling with his card, and he uses your website from some random city in America?

Competition: makes and sells electric pickup trucks
Elon: tweets about an electric pickup truck that can also be a boat even though no one is planning to use it as a boat
Did you know that water and air reacts with batteries used in this electric cars and it acts almost as fuel for lithium and it created big explosions, you can even test this yourself with opening small lithium batteries and putting them in water inside.
Now you can only imagine what would happen if water from this fake Tesla truck-boat-submarine gets inside this huge battery packs.
Things things are hazard and dangerous for everyone who drives in them, they should not allow kids to be inside.

3570  Economy / Goods / Re: Stainless steel Bitcoin Recovery Seed Plate on: October 20, 2022, 02:39:50 PM
Very nice results, and Jameson Lopp even wrote that your seed plate can be purchased via bitcointalk forum Smiley
It is certainly one of the cheaper metal seed plates tested on his website and now with this discount it's even cheaper.
This would be the best time for anyone who wanted to buy this plate.
3571  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: best virtual debit crypto card? on: October 20, 2022, 10:57:44 AM
bitpay,unbanked,crypto.com/getspendl are all EU/US bounded.
So what crypto debit or prepaid cards there are for Africa/Asia/South america?
I am not going to recommend using centralized exchanges but if you are already doing kyc verification for debit cards, you might as well use some cards that are issued by crypto exchanges like FTX, Binance or Kucoin.
If you want to stay somehow anonymous there are few options of using virtual cards and anon physical cards from websites like coindebit.io, but they won't be active again until November or December this year.
Do your own research before applying for any of this cards, and never hold more money on them than you are willing to lose.

Note that I don't know who's behind this website.
Main person behind this project is Stepan Snigirev and all project is maintained by Specter wallet team.
They are working on open source Specter DIY hardware wallet signing device, Specter desktop wallet, Lightning network, and everything related with Bitcoin.
If you want you can contact him on his email and social media to confirm this information, so you don't have to trust my words Wink
3573  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: What to do if your Ledger key have gone in the washing machine on: October 19, 2022, 06:14:36 PM
I made this little video, on how to put the odds on our side if our ledger keys gone to the washing machine.
I appreciate your effort in making this videos but it could have been made without funny characters, images and clips.
You should also know that after opening ledger devices you are voiding any warranty, but it's still better than throwing them away in garbage.
I am not a fan of ledger devices, but it would be interesting if someone could do water survival test for all hardware wallets.

There is also the battery issue.
Model X battery problems are well known worldwide, even without going into washing machine.
For that much money they could at least provide one small waterproof bag or case for this device, but you could also buy one yourself.

when i got this i had 3 nano x in my pockets....
What are you doing with so many hardware wallets in your pockets?!
I know they look like cheap usb drives, but you should not wear them with yourself all the time with your keys.
3574  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PIN codes and Hardware Wallets on: October 19, 2022, 05:31:42 PM
If you are talking about an attack which can bypass the PIN counter, then whatever the PIN counter is set to is irrelevant.
I can't say it's totally irrelevant, but I don't know how this attack would be performed on Passport device, and if this is even possible.
I remember when hacker and electrical engineer Kingpin aka Joe Grand cracked PIN code for one of his customer Trezor wallet, he was very careful not to spend all wrong PIN attempts.
Original owner spend most of them, so he could only miss a few times with wrong PIN before device would get wiped and erased.
There was an attack on old Coldcard Mk2 device with a laser that recovered PIN Code from this device, but I think this was related with flaws in their old secure element that was later replaced.

3575  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Guides for using Bisq on: October 19, 2022, 05:11:30 PM
It is! Ubuntu = Debian + [bloat].
Fedora looks like a great daily driver to me. Makes sense that it's gaining popularity.
Only problem I see with Fedora is the license stuff that is related with their main Red Hat linux parent distribution, recently there was a lot of fuss around this so cou would need to install RPM Fusion manually.
Regarding Bisq and LinuxOS, I found information from one of their team members that best supporting distribution currently is Debian and most of their derivates like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc.
Most people probably won't have any issues with other distributions, but you can't expect them to fix any potential probelms.
3576  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Creating wallet for physical round on: October 19, 2022, 03:19:57 PM
I want to create a private key via bitaddress and attach to physical round. Any suggestions are welcome. Material to print QR code on? How to place under security seal properly without compromising the private key. If you have done this, I would be open to any advice. This is for personal project. Nothing to market Smiley
I would look for new simplified QR codes that you can easily draw with your own hand, and I saw this being used by some diy hardware signing devices and hardware wallets.
You can easily draw this QR codes on regular paper or even engrave them in stainless steel plates, but adding security seal is mostly a security theater in my oppinion.
Don't use any thermal printers for long term QR codes because ink will fade away fairly quickly.

Instead of generating private key I would consider generating seed words that can later be used for generating more addresses.
Iancoleman website would be a good BIP39 option for this, if done correctly while being offline, or you could just use Electrum wallet.

3577  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Is Bitstamp still trustworthy? on: October 19, 2022, 02:27:32 PM
But recently their trustpilot page got flooded with 1-star reviews accusing them of blocking withdrawals of even KYC'ed accounts and basically stealing the money:
I don't trust trustpilot reviews because they can easily be fake and posted by their competition, but I also don't trust centralized exchanges like Bitstamp.
It's possible that things turned in bad direction after Bitstamp was sold few years ago to some Belgian investment fund, and who knows what happened after that.
I know that original founder team was from Slovenia and lot of people used their exchange for years without any issues, but lot of things changes since than.
3578  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How do coin swap platforms work? on: October 19, 2022, 01:48:10 PM
So I was wondering how does that work. Do they use a centralized exchange like Binance or Coinbase and somehow swap on them in which case they're somewhat of a middleman or do they use some other methods that I'm not aware of?
I would never swap Bitcoin for centralized coins like ethereum, and using any website you always have a risk of them holding/freezing your coins, or they could ask you for kyc verification.
Best way is to use atomic swaps with wallets like AtomicDex, with extension wallet Liquality, or by using Bisq decentralized exchange.
I think that Changenow is just using other centralized exchanges and partners that provide liquidity for them, but that usually means you will have to pay higher fees.
3579  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Forget about exchanger search! Use BestChange! on: October 19, 2022, 09:33:36 AM
How do you deal with a fake review scenario?  Like in this example below.

Oh the irony of this fake comment being shown in public for more than one month, and in the same time we can't see any real negative feedback for most exchanges.
Last time BestChange said they are working on improving feedback system was months ago, and I don't see anything really changed in good direction.
Now I can see only one single negative review for all exchange, and everything else was ''resolved''  Undecided
3580  Other / Meta / Re: Eliminate ban appeals, but change the perma ban at the same time. on: October 19, 2022, 09:22:28 AM
Certain things, like plagiarism and threats could still be perma bans. But, other offenses just get you a 30 or 60 or 90 day vacation and welcome back to being a newbie.
Sorry, but I just don't see the point of doing this and I don't expect anything would be better with this change.
There is already temporary ban in bitcointalk forum, but I wouldn't go so far to remove their rank and allow them to come back as a newbie.
People are going to try to register again after being banned no matter what rules and regulations we have in place, and we saw that many times.
Then you will have the issue with moderators having to deal with all this 30, 60 or 90 day ''vacation'' period for more members, and that means more work for moderators (for nothing).
