361  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Poloniex's taking money from its customers to cover its loss on: June 07, 2019, 11:08:44 AM
Another nail in the coffin for Poloniex. Circle must be really kicking themselves now for this acquisition.

It's a bit troubling they are hanging lenders out to dry like this. I'm surprised to be honest. Other exchanges have covered much bigger losses in flash crash situations. It really doesn't bode well for future market liquidity. Aren't lenders going to leave en masse?

I will. I have accounts at all exchanges, but I will stop doing business with Poloniex.

I've kept my Binance account when they've been hacked, because that can happen to everybody, I've also kept my Bitfinex account, because they were the victim of a shady partner (Crypto Capital), but I blame Poloniex here. And Circle which is behind. They should cover the loss. Bitfinex has lost $850 millions, but their customers haven't lost a cent.

I blame Poloniex their software, and their judgement. So does Yahoo:

362  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Poloniex's taking money from its customers to cover its loss on: June 07, 2019, 02:49:39 AM
I see Poloniex as fully responsible. I blame their software.

We live in an age of superfast trading by bots, and there's a protection built-in with margin trading operations. As soon as the loss reaches the sum of money traded to begin with, the software should have terminated the trade in a second. It should be instant. Poloniex's blaming the lack of liquidity in the Clam market, that is a problem they should have been aware of, and lenders aren't responsible for it.

Scary. I used to think lending money on Poloniex or Biftinex was safe. Not anymore.

Today, we recognized the generalized loss across lenders in the BTC margin lending pool. As a result, the principal of all active BTC loans as of 14:00 UTC today has been reduced by 16.202%.

So, if you were lending money on Poloniex, you've lost 16.202% of it... Man, that hurts!
364  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How to not care what the society thinks? on: June 06, 2019, 10:48:07 PM
Just move to a bigger city.
If you live in New York, you can do whatever you want and nobody will care. There are so many freaks and weirdos out there...
365  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: LocalBitcoins Cash-in-person trades removed? on: June 06, 2019, 10:41:20 PM
I believe Hodl Hodl is their best successor, but they have very, very few trades... Anyone suggests another service? I live in Europe and my interest is limited to Cash-in-person trades.

there was a pretty comprehensive list mentioned earlier in the thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/b2wj6k/p2p_exchanges_eg_localbitcoins_bisq_hodlhodl/

nothing compares to localbitcoins though, not even close. the next biggest service offering in-person cash listings seems to be paxful. im in the USA and there's less than 10 listings (to sell for cash in person) across the entire country! a few more have popped since localbitcoins removed the option, but still......

Yes, I've seen that list, just wanted to know what others were thinking.

I've looked at Paxful, and when it comes to cash in person offers, it has only 4 of them in the whole of Europe... And they're not cheap!

I guess there's an opportunity. If I were sedentary living in a big city, I would become a trader, there are customers waiting.
366  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: LocalBitcoins Cash-in-person trades removed? on: June 05, 2019, 11:31:28 PM
This is suicide.

I haven't been using LocalBitcoins much, but only to make Cash-in-person trades. If it's no longer possible, I won't use LocalBitcoins any more.

I believe Hodl Hodl is their best successor, but they have very, very few trades... Anyone suggests another service? I live in Europe and my interest is limited to Cash-in-person trades.
367  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US visa application now requires submission of social media information on: June 03, 2019, 09:42:56 PM

I wonder if it will apply to 'dual nationals'?

No, because when you have 2 passports, it's forbidden to use the non American one to enter the US. Also immigration services don't know you have another citizenship.
368  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: ~ How Much Money Would you Need to Make to Stop Using Paid Sig Offers? on: May 28, 2019, 10:26:25 PM
Hmm... I don't remember.

I know I used to have an ad for a blender but it was very, very little money. I stopped it some 2 years ago, and I'm not missing it at all.

I am not sure if you are aware, but Elwar was located in international waters that no country has claim to.

Thai authorities say that it's their economic zone where they are allowed to fish and such. It's strange that no country is against Thailand performing military operations in international waters. They sent a warship to dismantle the seastead and move it within its borders, so they stole a property that neighboring countries like Malaysia could have equal claims to, but obviously nobody cares.

It's not that nobody cares, it's the contrary. All countries support Thailand. All countries would have reacted exactly the same way, and Elwar was naive to think he was safe being just behind the 12 miles limit. Try to build a seastead 13 miles off the coast of Florida, you'll get Marines assaulting you within days.
370  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: April 30, 2019, 10:25:38 AM
you can't run an exchange without following proper KYC laws...

Customers' integrity isn't the issue here, we're talking about the integrity of the exchange (or the people managing the exchange).

I wish you could buy and sell BTC at a bank, or in some good old-fashioned brick and mortar store.
371  Economy / Exchanges / Re: NY Attorney General sues Bitfinex on: April 30, 2019, 10:17:13 AM
So it's possible Bitfinex hasn't done anything wrong, with Crypto Capital the only culprit? Hmmm...

Bitfinex does not currently have access to $850M worth of USD. Some of this money is customer deposits, and bitfinex did not disclose this to the public until the NYAG disclosed this fact for them.

The failing to disclose the missing USD is probably something most of their customers will frown upon.

Their saying that they will get the money back within a few weeks is also overpromising.
372  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thailand files complaint against Bitcoin Seasteader on: April 28, 2019, 11:47:39 PM
The WSJ published an article today online.

According to the article, Elwar was *only* living in the seastead, did not own it, nor choose the location. He apparently was planning on investing in the company that sells them, but that never materialized. The Thai government also towed the seastead back to land early last week.

I searched for his facebook, and Elwar posted that he and his wife are safe, and is avoiding social media to avoid making a mistake that will reveal his location.

Well, Elwar's getting famous, the WSJ is writing about him! He can be proud of that. Actually, I believe he was lucky, and that Thailand has been nice. It would have been much worse if he had chosen to seastead near the US, Russia or China.

I wonder if Thailand has issued a search warrant against him (a local lawyer could check that). Then, he would be in real trouble.

So it's possible Bitfinex hasn't done anything wrong, with Crypto Capital the only culprit? Hmmm...

I hope that would be the case, but we were talking of 850 millions, and there's only 370 which may have been seized in Poland, so what about the remaining 480 millions?

If Bitfinex wants to stay in business, it has a lot to explain. With all details given to the court in NY, so it will take more than a blog post...
374  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Exchanges and trades should not mix on: April 28, 2019, 11:20:09 PM
I'm not confused at all. I know that today, on Bitfinex, you can sell your cryptos for cash and request a bank wire. Then all exchanges also offer the so called "stable coins". They have extended their business, but I think this was bad idea. I say it was much better, and safer for all, including the trading services, when you had to buy cryptos on another service, with trading services only offering cryptos to cryptos trading (and without any stable coins).

Look at the mess Bitfinex is in. It's all because of that Tether thing, and fiat conversion services. You could make a parallel with retail and investment banking. Exchanges are retail, and trading services are investments.

Trading commissions on cryptos alone shall make a decent income.
375  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thailand files complaint against Bitcoin Seasteader on: April 28, 2019, 11:56:08 AM
Unfortunately, this was expected. There were just too close to the coast. Seasteading can only be considered safe if you're more than 200 miles from any country. I guess Elwar must relocate to the middle of the Pacific...
376  Economy / Exchanges / Exchanges and trades should not mix on: April 28, 2019, 11:45:56 AM
I've been thinking that for years, and the Bitfinex affair just shows I was right.

I'm a trader, trading cryptocurrencies with other cryptocurrencies, and sometimes, I'm also using exchanges, to convert cryptocurrencies to fiat currencies. I want to use trading services which do not offer exchange services, and I want to use exchange services which do make trades between cryptocurrencies.

And I don't want any stablecoins. Bitfinex was a great service, it's that Tether thing which may sink them.
377  Economy / Exchanges / Re: NY Attorney General sues Bitfinex on: April 28, 2019, 11:36:12 AM
Yes, Bitfinex isn't saying enough, or isn't saying the truth. It says 850 millions have been seized, and that is certainly possible, but in that case, it means there are legal proceedings which could prove the seizure. Only thieves seize money without traces.
378  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How do you imagine ideal society? on: April 23, 2019, 06:03:32 PM
Ideal society would be no society. Where there would be no sense of belonging. There would be no countries and no citizenship. No people, just men and women.
379  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Notre Dame destroyed by fire on: April 18, 2019, 07:38:11 PM
Very, very sad. I hope this was an accident, but I wonder how this could happen. Notre Dame has always been crowded when I was there, alarm should have been raised within minutes after the fire started. I'm also thinking that wood which is several centuries old should be very difficult to ignite. I hope the truth will be known, finally, I'm very sad for all Catholics. This happening just before Easter, it's terrible.
380  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin (BTC) Hits 400 Million Transactions on: April 18, 2019, 07:32:35 PM
This clearly shows that BTC can improve, and is effectively improving. 2,500 transactions per block isn't a problem, transactions are fast and cheap. The future looks bright!
