381  Economy / Currency exchange / Bitstamp in the UK? on: October 01, 2014, 09:10:44 PM
Does Bitstamp send cash out to UK bank accounts?

If not, what is the best way to sell bitcoins in the UK?

I think we should get our own IRC channel and maybe a Ventrilo/voice server.

For some reason this post just reminded me I have access to aminorex.com! I will add a link to your most recent posts there. Smiley (Let me know if you want the text changed or don't want the link for some reason... just doing this for fun Wink)
383  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Outdoor Balcony mining? on: September 27, 2014, 12:59:28 AM
I used to run my GPUs on the balcony. Smiley I'll never forget how nervous I was the first time it rained. But the tarp held up. Good memories!
384  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Projected Minimum Cost per BTC over the next year on: September 26, 2014, 12:33:22 AM
Based on the hashrate increase and how consumers are still buying over priced miners, I now think that overall mining will go negative ROI for a while until people realize that they are losing money. Home miners don't think like business miners and may not realize they are losing $ in small bits here and there.

So while the max hashrate/BTC calculations have value, I don't think many individuals will actually shut down if they already have the equipment.

Gonna be a rough ride for a while.

I agree with this. I also believe the typical home miner is more likely to hold onto his/her bitcoin.

But I couldn't imagine the big mining farms selling at a loss. They are at the top of the bitcoin food chain.
Yes, but I imagine that now home miners are a small percentage of the overall mining market. Does anyone have a guess at how sizable they are now?

Looks like the current difficult bump a few hours from now is about to be about 15.7%.

Edit: Can we update the table based on this data? It would be cool to have this on a website where the data is brought up to date in live time. Smiley
Something like bitcoinclock.com but better.
386  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Statistical analysis of Bitcoin public key distribution on: September 25, 2014, 12:32:07 AM
That's funny, I was just wondering about this myself. I'd be interested to see the results of both address distribution and public key distribution.
387  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 17, 2014, 10:49:30 PM
Hmmm... I work up there a bit, but it's a close call.  I think 'no' will be the result - but the unintended consequences of a 'yes' vote will have ramifications for the UK. Speaking from another part of the UK - it will not do me much good, personally - but it does fascinate me.

I can't see a Bitcoin benefit anytime soon, though - that is a little fanciful.  They will just keep the pound (whether England likes it or not) for now, perhaps for a long time to come.

'Yes' will be a bombshell for the UK and its place in the world will be questioned and a 'yes' will be also be more exciting to see - but I just don't see it (quite).
I just arrived in Scotland an hour ago with a colleague. We're going to be meeting with Labor at 6am to take part in the campaign during the day and then watch the votes come in at night. I don't really have a strong opinion. It does look like the vote will be 'No', so anything else will be a real shocker. The look of the woman at the front desk of our hostel was priceless when she heard that an Australian and an American had just arrived in town to campaign on the 'No' side.

If anyone is in Glasgow from now until Monday, send me a PM.

Monkey thinks you are clever.  Monkey has been very dreary for a very long time.  Now monkey says two weeks to lift-off.

You can't keep a good coin down.
389  Economy / Speculation / Re: rpietila Wall Observer - the Quality TA Thread ;) on: September 03, 2014, 10:28:56 PM
My best estimate of a desirable target date for the issuers (assuming SEC does not seek to delay it unreasonably) is November 8th, 2014, which is the 10th anniversary of the issuance of GLD.   I do not have expert data required to form a mechanism-based timing estimate.
Just for fun...

EQUITY GOLD TRUST filed their S-1 on 13 May 2003. 1 year, 5 months, 3 weeks, 5 days later GLD was issued.

The S-1 for COIN was 1 July 2013. So that would put us on the 27th of December 2014.

Until and unless ZC can evolve so that it no longer requires a trusted mint,  I do not think it can succeed.  The overhanging risk of the mint defecting, and secretly issuing unlimited amounts of the currency, is just too great.

Assuming the value would be in moving in and out of ZC to clean bitcoins, why would it be a bad thing if the mint issued unlimited amounts of the currency? Wealth could be kept in BTC and ZC could be held for short amounts of time to clean the BTC.

Hey aminorex,

I follow your posts as they are a very high quality. We were just talking about them at Malla and everyone feels this way.

IIRC you were saying that you wouldn't trust something like zerocoin as if the initial accumulator values are not destroyed it breaks the anonymity set. It turns out that with zerocash, the initial values, if not destroyed, would only allow someone to create more of the coin rather than break the anonymity of the users.

I've been playing with simplewallet.exe. Sometimes when I try to transfer monero from one wallet to another the client complains that the transaction is too large. When I try again it works. Is the transaction building logic not deterministic? I guess this comes down to the RNG? Why not try a few more in the event of the transaction being too large?
393  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 07, 2014, 06:17:16 AM
When I first started my wallet, I didn't encrypt it. How can I encrypt it now? I'm using simple wallet.

Another question: How does the Monero wallet decide what other signatures to use to sign a transaction when I say to use n signatures? Does it select them randomly from the blockchain?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's encrypted - always. There's no ability to create an unencrypted wallet.
Yea but I can spend from my wallet without typing a password. So it must not be encrypted.

My guess is that your password is empty.  That doesn't make it plaintext, it just makes it trivial to guess the password.

Just looking at the code... I think it is possible that there is no PW set.

    if(!command_line::has_arg(vm, arg_password) )
    {
      LOG_ERROR("Wallet password not set.");
      return 1;
    }

Not the best code to prove it but it's 2am and I need to sleep. Smiley Best to use additional encryption anyway - or generate a new wallet w/ a password and send to there. The wallet software is still evolving though as the PW doesn't seem changeable.

      crypto::generate_ring_signature(tx_prefix_hash, boost::get<txin_to_key>(tx.vin).k_image, keys_ptrs, in_contexts.in_ephemeral.sec, src_entr.real_output, sigs.data());

Are the unlinkable transactions similar to bitcoin stealth addresses?

399  Economy / Speculation / Re: CryptoWaves - Elliott Wave Analysis Blog on: April 22, 2014, 09:09:51 PM
just wait till the stock market fib triggers and hundreds of trillions of USD needs a new home. where will it go? USD, gold, and a very small fraction (say half a billion) bitcoin.

How long would you estimate?

Yes, of course, I waiting for it. But it will happen not NOW.
First we will deflate the bitcoin bubble, and then the stock and fiat bubble will burst and the new money will go to bitcoin. Be patient. Everything takes time.

Why not just short on BitFinex?
For ideological reasons I can never short the coin. Smiley
