LESSONS LEARNED:

Under promise, over deliver - NOT the other way around. Someone send a note to all those new startups now please.

Nope, over promise, under deliver, then jack up the price massively for the second gen product while all the people with the first gen products masturbate on their blogs with it

Aaaaaand, finally, we have a succinct summary of BFL's business practices.

I was describing Apple, actually.

Now, William Hung can't sing either, but look what he did with what he had.  He had a good attitude, most people loved him, and he got to be in the spotlight for a shortwhile.  He was happy and he made others happy.

That's an excellent point, but it has nothing to do with singing. What you're describing is him being a good performer, which I also disagree with, but I think the performance of him and "Chocolate rain" fall in the same self-deprecating popularity areas where the worse your performance is, the more popular you become. There's nothing wrong with it-- it's how Bush was elected, no?

I am speaking as a singer only. If she was asking people on her performance, then I'd say "droll". Doesn't mean I wouldn't be friends with her, or give her a MtGox T-Shirt care of Bruno. I'd just never ask her to sing at a show, and I wouldn't support her and lie to her if she asks for my opinion for example.

Another interesting story:

One thing BitScalper did claim was that he is Italian, as did CoinExchanger.

He also claimed to have a wife, as did CoinExchanger.

He also used a fake name (twice, changing it in mid persona to tell us his "real" identity) just like CoinExchanger.

His identity also has a background on internet forums as a currency trader, just like CoinExchanger.

He also used a similar Google-style burner in the same area as CoinExchanger.

He is also obsessed with his anonymity like CoinExchanger.

He also uses Tor to connect to the forums, just like CoinExchanger.

He also only shows up publicly once in a long blue moon, just like CoinExchanger.

He also claims he is in Italy, but has his Skype country set to the USA and has suspicious routing to NYC, just like CoinExchanger.

He also has the same way of treating people (shady and sociopathically) as CoinExchanger.

He also talks in PM just like CoinExchanger, elipses and idioms and all.

He also switches from poor language to fluency randomly, just like CoinExchanger.

Interestingly enough, whenever I have called CoinExchanger "BitScalper", he has never once corrected me or seemed surprised, nor defended himself.

Also interestingly enough, when CoinExchanger first contacted me on Skype because I was trolling him, he talked to me like we had already known each other very well and said that he liked me a lot but wanted me to stop bothering his source of income.

I know correlation does not imply causation, but still-- as a hacker myself, something smells funny about both of those identities and I'm going to get to the bottom of it.

4407  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitscalper back to business on: March 13, 2012, 03:28:57 PM
as long as bitscalper comes here promoting his "new arbitrage bot" without returning peoples money everyone has the right to warn potential victims. So calling him a scammer is the least that can be done.

He already has the Scammer tag under his username. People are warned even without 7 pages of trolling.
If he didn't had the Scammer tag I would be all for it. Wink

And Matthew, your explanation was more reasonable than I thought it would be. You know there are no hard feelings Smiley

Of course.

EDIT: I edited my previous post and added some more information because I think it's relevant.

EDIT2: I edited it again to provide more information. Again. Again again.

The people posting about her appearance are just as bad as the ones supporting her. She can't sing and that's why she deserves a thumbs down, not other reason.

If the video said "I am beautiful", then it would be a different story.

Judging singers on looks is a pet peve of mine. Korean pop stars aren't singers, they're makeup-laden plastic models who do a bit of dancing while pantomiming and it kills me that society accepts them as "talent".

I don't want to live in this world anymore.

I like Matthew. I believe Matthew. I trust Matthew so much that I PM him my last name so that he would have it on record, knowing that he would only give it out if he deemed it totally necessary for the the community at large to have it. Just like I have Matthew's phone number, but would only give it out as a last resort. I also rib Matthew. I only do that to try to match his humor. Perhaps I'm competing in that respect, although I can't match his education level, but he can't match my life experiences, for I'm about twice his age.

God Speed, Matthew

~Cackling Bear~ (still damning Matthew for giving me this moniker)

Matthew, only morons haven't understood by now that your only butthurt because bitscalper told you and your DCAO buddies a big "GTFO" when you wanted to know more than he wanted to reveal.
Not butthurt. Same story with CoinExchanger- threatened. Not butthurt. Threatened.

I broke up with him, he didn't break up with me.  Cry

You guys are just a bunch of jealous freaks who couldn't stand someone else having the script to make money and you wanted a piece of the pie also
Umm, I honestly don't remember if I mentioned this publicly or not, but BitScalper was trying to make me a partner and wanted to start an exchange with me. Why would I turn that down for any reason other than feeling like I was being conned by a sociopath?

Do you know he keeps dropping this guy's name who sold the .cc TLD (who he says is a millionaire philanthropist) and saying they are personal buddies and that all his funding comes from him? He kept saying "You can meet him tomorrow!" everyday for 2 weeks, along with "I will show you the code tomorrow!" everyday for 2 weeks. The only thing he ever showed me was a desktop capture of a live Mtgox ticker feed and a cell phone number (Google) that he never answered.

He also changed his promises every single time we talked, pushing back dates, giving excuses (good ones too!) which made me truly think he was not just a scammer, but a sociopath who actually believes he is as important as he was constantly bragging about. He talked about Zhou Tong like he was a "moron" and "didn't know his shit", and yet he would lose access to KalyHost for an entire week and have no backup, crying to me that he had 30,000BTC in a wallet on that VPS in Germany and no backups to his site OR the wallet.  Roll Eyes

He's got all the signs of a scammer and I've got all the signs of someone who is far too trusting, so I eventually caved into the already active voices who have experience building trade bots asking me flat out "Why would someone who makes profits based off of exclusivity like arbitrage trading give away access to it? It's just giving away profit. It's an obvious ponzi". This, and that regardless of his constant claims of "mad skillz" he was making amateur mistakes like not backing up his wallet, constantly pushing back appointments that were vital to build trust in him despite his complete anonymity, etc.

The only reason I posted here to not trust him was because things weren't adding up about him. And I mean, SERIOUSLY not adding up about him. I also made it clear that I did not think he was a scammer at first, that I just wanted the community to know that my personal dealings with him give me no reason to work with him under a completely anonymous setting that he demands to maintain, and every security professional I work with has backed me up stating simply "It's a no brainer. 100% anonymous means 100% risk. Only an idiot would deposit with him".

After a while though, even though I wanted to to stay cordial with him, he has disappeared several times, failed every benchmark, lost wallets, lost deposits, and still hasn't returned people's bitcoins.

I will go even further and say that a piece of the pie wasn't enough and you wanted to keep it ALL to yourself instead of letting other people deposit funds and be rewarded for it.
Even bitscalper knows this is bullshit. Our DCAO already has arbitrage bot trade developers and businessmen already using them, which is why we knew so much about what he was doing from day 1 (and why we picked up on his bluffs and inaccuracies from the first week). Even bitscalper will admit that I personally was just there to help him make as much money and get as big of a reward as possible for himself-- back when I thought he was a starving developer and not a scammer, that is.

We originally had approached him to see if he wanted to either work with us on a new project or to sell his bot, but after finding out that he didn't know anything about what he was doing and was smelling like a sociopath, we decided it was a waste of time, and everyone who was curious just became judgmental. I was the only one in the DCAO not calling him a scammer at this point, and they will all back me up on this, so much to the point they were losing faith in me because they said it was "blatant" and "obvious", and I kept wanting to believe and give him more than enough chances.

And that I did. Too many chances. He has never kept a single one of his promises, I have told him flat out what my needs are for trusting him, and he has always come close to fulfilling requirements to work with me (which he opted to do because he wanted to work with me personally and I wanted to work with him) but then would constantly become either emotional and claim it was not worth the risk on his point and "How dare" I ask him for anything related to his personal ID, or he would create constant streams of excuses. We're talking about blatantly ridiculous excuses here, like: "I promise I will give you code proving this is not a ponzi scheme on Wednesday" and then contacting me on Friday and telling me he's not comfortable giving anything to me, etc, and then discussing things as if they were on track (sociopath). It got to the point that I basically said "call me when you're ready to talk", but he would PM me whenever he had a problem with his site instead. We had an uneven and unhealthy relationship at that point and it was becoming obvious that he was a sociopath and most likely a scammer.

Also, what you said about me not wanting others to be rewarded, I'm sorry, is one of the most ignorant non-points in all of your statements. The only reason we met up in the first place is because I thought it was awesome to include the community (I was involved in Bitcoinica too!) in investments etc, and even talked to him about joining together to make a bigger investment based site (which is what he is trying to build right now on his own). You've read me wrong, because I troll a lot, and you've taken my trolling as being unnecessarily aggressive because I am "angry", instead of just being addicted to dopamine, having ADHD, and being easily amused at scammers wriggling.

Notice: I'm not defending him, and I said a few(7?) pages back that he must return everyones money.
But you are not helping...

I see this as being the result of one too many annoying trolling posts and I apologize. I have always respect your opinion and voice on things, and if you think I've crossed a line, I'll check myself. Really though... at this point, it would take a miracle to convince me he's not just Tom William 2.0, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the DCAO-- it's basic arbitrage common sense for profit sharing. Why would he do it? There is no logical reason.
4412  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: I'm refunding the victims of my terrible scam on: March 13, 2012, 12:48:07 PM
Yeah, I admit, it was Googlish... I didn't know how to put down "totally," as in "I would totally buy you a beer. " But then I ended up taking it out anyway and since I don't have a hangul keyboard, cut and paste is easier about 10 billion time easier. Smiley

hehe. For the record, the equivelant slang would probably just be "seriously" instead of "totally", so throw 정말 in there.

4413  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs - Bitforce Single and Rig Box on: March 13, 2012, 11:29:40 AM
I find it strange to advertise products, that don't exist.

On that note, I announced the Bitcoin Magazine before we even had the flatplan figured out. Is that dishonest or just over-zealous?

I'm actually asking. I personally think Butterfly Labs was over-zealous and they've already learned their lesson (as have we btw).

I am not sure if you have previous experience with publishing a magazine (not just editing or writing a story or two). If you had, you'd probably added a bit of buffer here and there, or would have vaguely stated "coming in 2012" with the option of releasing it much earlier. Or having no competition at all, you may even have opted to not announce it until you were sure things are properly in place and only a few weeks away.

Lets stick with your business as example to draw parallels to the "matter on hand". If you would have competition, I could see why you would want to claim it's coming in a few weeks. If you wouldn't have money to finance printing and editorial staff, I could also see why you would want your customers to send you money in believe it's coming in a few weeks. If you would have to convince a printing company or other supplier in the background that you are a trustworthy company and hence print or deliver with payment terms (or deliver at all), I would also understand why you would create a web site with "imaginative" products and claim to have a lot of experience and customers in the "scientific" field. And if you would see this all as big stunt that may or may not work out, I can also see why you would hide your identity from the public and not take a personal risk. I'd definitely not want to send you more than a few Bitcoins (as I did, as a matter of fact).

I honestly haven't followed -every- detail. Did they hide their information? (I seem to remember some idiot asking for a bounty for a photo of their ID or something)

4415  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: March 13, 2012, 11:06:11 AM
Thanks for this quick reply !
It wasn't agreed on by the team, that's for sure, and I'll probably get heat for it since it's an unprofessional announcement, but I felt personally responsible, saw your comment, and was online, so fuck it. ^_^

It's good to know you're still taking this seriously.
This magazine was, is and will always be my baby. Sure it isn't covered in placental womb juice, but that doesn't mean I don't think of it as highly. Too many people in the Bitcoin community (Disclaimer: speech coming) are too busy obsessing about short term profits, people's intentions and agendas, and basically are just easily obsessed and blinded. (That's actually the reason I troll so much, to teach them a goddamn lesson Wink)

This magazine bridges the gap of information that no other entity or group in the Bitcoin community has been able to even come close to doing, and I'll tell you why. Everyone in our community to date, even the loudest mouths, have all preached about Bitcoin with a libertarian spin. Unfortunately, that doesn't just mean that non-libertarians will tune out, it means that non-libertarians become anti-Bitcoin.

The magazine is neutral. We will report the facts, even if it was that our magazine sucked. In fact, I'll be the first to write an article about myself if I had done the Linode hack (it'd be good publicity for the magazine in fact). When people see neutrality, they come to trust it. When people see extremists and conspiracy theorists, they put up their guard.

So in a sense, we're here to rescue Bitcoin, and not just with the magazine, but with numerous larger projects in the DCAO. The magazine is just one arm in the media direction. You guys will hear plenty about the other projects when it's time. I've done enough damage announcing the magazine 3 months before it was time and still haven't heard the end of it from our marketing director. This is how he greets me these days. "Hey Matthew. How's prematurely announcing things going?".  Cry

I have a few more questions if I may :
. I might be wrong, but as time goes on, the global cost of the project must be growing too, isn't it ? Unless you're working as volunteer for this (I don't think so ) !
It was all on me in the beginning. I was doing all the designs, all the ads, all the layouts, etc. Fuck, it was my shower-induced brain fart to even start the magazine in the first place (I wasn't satisfied with the exposure or limitations of bittalk.tv). That's obviously not scalable and my team got hungry too, so we restructured the workload (some big setbacks were involved with that too and we lost some time honestly). As for working for profit, I don't really personally care about the profitability of the magazine, I care about the reach and quality of it. The profits will handle themselves. That's why I bring in talented people who know when to tell me to stop talking, so that we don't lose money. In fact, I better get off here before they see me.  Grin

As for costs, I've been blessed enough to have backers for everything I have done since 13. For some reason people like to put their faith in the burning balls of energy that exist in the shape of human beings and can produce talented results at a rapid rate. Imagine that! All kidding aside, we're happy to eat losses while this thing takes off, but have no misconceptions of us going bankrupt. That does not give anyone license to stop supporting us though!  Wink

. Have you reached the 2,000 customers yet ? I would understand if you want to keep this info private, as business is business...
As much as I'd love to tell you exact figures and such, we simply don't have them yet, and even if we did, people seem to think just because I'm the face and even the founder, that I'm the only shareholder. Shareholders have meetings on things, create non-disclosure agreements, corporate operating agreement, revision policies, financial policies, budgets, privacy and disclosure policies, etc. Basically, I don't think I can say things like that on a forum even if I knew because someone in our faculty might have something planned. It might even be a surprise. Never know, and better be safe than sorry.

Maybe you should weekly update this thread with fresh news, to calm potentially paranoid people (like me !) Smiley

It's been discussed before, but frankly speaking not one of our dozens of colleagues are interested in posting every move we make on a forum hosted by our competition. If someone wants to know how we're doing (and in doing so, support us), they can always visit the site (which has an updated blog) at http://bitcoinmagazine.co.uk.

Consider this thread a "major update" and "discussion" thread only. I wouldn't leave everyone in the dark of course, but I am probably never going to do a giant post like this one again. This is a special case that I think the supporters deserved a response, basically.

Any news about the Magazine ?
Articles are all written, copyedited etc.
Layouts skeletons are long done.
Advertising space is all filled.
Cover is finished.
Flatplan is done.
Marketing strategy is set.
Publishing agreement is under way.
Printers are standing by.

We're waiting on our illustrator and our layout designer to finish coordinating the finishing touches between each other (that's why my hands are tied atm).

My apologies on the lateness. I took this project on alone with an audience, and then listened to the cry to make it more of a team effort. The sudden switch in responsibilities kind of slowed things down quite a bit while everyone caught up to their duties and we're picking up steam again.

The previous illustrations weren't up to a level of quality I would ever want my name attached to so that took the longest time to square away and we have been down this road for 2 weeks, and 2 different designers. I'd like to remind everyone (And I remind this to my furious colleagues on a daily basis): It's okay to be late on the first issue-- it's not okay to be late on every other issue-- so long as the content was worth the wait.

What I mean to say is, this is about building a system that can successfully produce quality content on a monthly basis, not just getting it all done quickly by whatever broken means possible to appease the forum members. (I know that sounds rude to the people who have purchased an issue, but I'm mostly speaking to the people who understand how business works, and if anything, this should allow you to believe in our work ethic and the magazine's quality moreso, not scare you away because of a delay).

Have you found a printer to work with ?
I did that before I even started organizing the contents.

Everyone saw Matthew taking his time arguing about other people unprofessionnal business around here, and I think he should have other priorities, regarding his Editor status.
I've said it from day one-- Jack of all trades, master of none. It'll be a few issues before I can sufficiently kick ass at this, and by that time I'll probably have already brought in a professional editor from a major magazine to assist me anyway.

The February issue may be changed to March after all !
It may be changed to April! And it won't matter in the slightest. I don't mean to sound unapologetic (I'm actually quite bothered, annoyed, stressed, etc at this entire lateness issue and emphatically sorry) but we can only ever have a first issue once, and as the biggest troll on the forums, would you expect me to settle for lower standards on my own work in exchange for making some loud people quiet again?

Sorry. I just don't work that way. I value the quality and impact of the work I do much more than pleasing a few people who don't understand just how ridiculous the impact this magazine will have on the world at large in respect to Bitcoin adoption.

Sorry if I missed the info, which may be lost in the troll part of this thread

It's alright. I wouldn't call it trolling though, people are just letting off steam at their disappointment in the missed timelines-- myself too. Make no mistake about it though, I wake up at 6:30am now to Skype calls and irate colleagues tossing issues, assessments, etc at me (I live in Korea so the time difference is a bitch). I will go gray because of this magazine, but when it's all said and done, I hope it was worth it and I hope everyone can appreciate the effort (and more important the time, since it's more important than money) that we've put into it just for this little currency in our own backyard.

Bam!

i invested about 1.27BTC in bitscalper's idea.

what was your investement ?
let us make a estimation of the payback...

8BTC here, made 3BTC, pulled out as soon as I made the decision to stop supporting anonymous shady businesses that can't explain why they don't even backup their own 'financial service' websites.

I imagine the 3BTC I made was sucked out of someone's deposits somewhere. Feels bad, man. Feels bad.

Matt, 제가 한국에 있었다면 난 당신에게 맥주 한잔을 살 것이다.

I really need to get over there sometime soon.

Strange grammar. Suspiciously googlish.

  • When I get to Korea, I'll buy you a round. - 제가 한국에도착하면 꼭 맥주 한장사줄겁니다!
  • If I ever get to Korea, I'll buy you a round. - 만약에 한국으로 가면 꼭 맥주 한장사줄겁니다!
  • If I was in Korea, I'd buy you a round. - 제가 한국에있었으면 꾹 맥주 한장사줄겠습니다!

And the most important point of all:

술안먹꺼든! ㅋㅋㅋ

I don't drink. Get a pack of Martenelli's Sparkling Apple Cider and you're on.

I think this whole new system is silly and only highlights those people that throw themselves out there to state an opinion on an issue. Pussys don’t need to worry about their ignore color because they don’t have an opinion on anything.

Who said anything about worrying. I want to see how many people ignore me so I can know if I'm over the top or if I'm doing my job correctly. When half the forum ignores me, that's a bit over the top and I should tone it down. When 1/4th ignores me, I'm doing my job.
