I'm not much of a camguy, but what about GTalk/Google Hangouts? Does skype even do conferences?

I don't use cams on Skype for group conferencing, only text. Skype functions just like IRC. Right now we're chatting text-only. Also, google products SUCK on mobile/tablets, I'm sorry but it's just true. Skype only kind of sucks on mobile, and mostly iPhone.

I think you meant to say

Why not use imgur.com?
3763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you use Skype, read this thread. on: April 25, 2012, 01:19:43 PM
IRC, have you heard of it?

As an avid and hardcore IRCer from childhood on, I can tell you that the overall experience pales in comparison. Skype doesn't require a constant connection, keeps logs and rejoins you later without losing momentum, allows for video and voice calls, etc.

IRC is so 1990. (Skype is so 2000, but nothing better has come out yet so meh).

Hi. I'm the founder of one of the largest incubators in Bitcoin, the DCAO (Digital Commerce Advancement Organization). Although we use various project management solutions such as JIRA, we mostly communicate over Skype. Currently we have 50+ active members in the organization working busily on the produces and services that you use everyday.

While doing my chores on the Bitcoin Magazine today, I was realizing just how uncomfortable it is to discuss things in forum PMs and how many missed opportunities there are for people sharing ideas here on these forums with the wrong crowd. So completely separate from the DCAO, I'd like to start the first Skype Bitcoin group. The minimum requirements for this group are as follows:

You must either:
  • Love Bitcoin
  • Hate Bitcoin
  • Not yet have an opinion formed on Bitcoin

No Atlas allowed

Please add matthewnealwright to your Skype contacts and make sure to have your friend request say "Because Bitcoin" or else I'll think you're a random creeper and block you.

Thanks!

Matthew

3766  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: BitLasers.com - Handheld Lasers and accessories on: April 25, 2012, 12:30:33 PM
For all the AUS folks I can confirm customs will not return to sender Tongue
I tried to order a laser a few years ago.. they confiscated it and sent a letter telling me it was gone.

Which only proves how awesome lasers are that even customs wants one.
3767  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 04:09:14 PM
I think it's important to mention this:

There are not simply two kinds of suicidal threats (i.e. serious vs call-for-help).  There's a lot of gray area, and a lot of unpredictability.

Take the person I met that drank a cup of bleach.  They will tell you all about it.

If there's one thing I've learned from working in a hospital, it's that every person who threatens suicide is in a world of problems.  You take absolutely every threat seriously because "serious" is not simply limited to the actual act of attempting suicide.

Ordinarily I would agree with this line of thought, but I am right-to-life and I think suicide is everyone's own choice. Furthermore I believe there are far worse fates than death because I do not believe in an afterlife. If I came to the forums threatening suicide, I'd want everyone to tell me to shut the fuck up and stop whining, not rush to my aid. Rushing to my aid would only depress me that everyone is that pathetic and ignorant. Atlas is just testing the fences, and many suicide fakers are too.

It's not a happy circumstance when someone dies, but I stand by my lack of care for suicide as a statement to this generation that they are all fucking pansies when it comes to the concept of death. Death is the most natural thing in the entire world. Bring it on. I'll kill myself tomorrow just to prove a point. Who cares? Life will end for everyone, so choosing when it ends is an awesome empowerment. I salute suicide. That said, if someone is killing themselves because they're sad about something, then that's no different than getting drunk or doing drugs because they're sad about something-- it's escapism and I don't support it.

So to sum up:

Killing yourself because of a calculated decision based on your worth in the world and your lack of interest in continuing the endless torture that is life: Okay.
Killing yourself because you're an emofag who doesn't want to go to school anymore: Not okay.

Atlas isn't either. He's an attention whore who thinks every brain fart of his is a revolution we should all be awestruck by.
3768  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 03:28:12 PM
I think it was the ignore button that pushed him over the edge. As his ignore state got darker, so did his attention seeking.

I see what you did here. You put the blame squarely on theymos.

He's the admin, and the only one who can ban.
3769  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Identity Theft on: April 24, 2012, 03:27:51 PM
Sooooo..

Is this proof that Atlas and Jon, and all the others is indeed Atlas..

So heres the proof of creating new accounts to circumvent bans, and trolling..?

Matthew, were you not looking for this admission of guilt ?

And why is he and all his nicks not banned again ?

Maged has already agreed and seconded all of our confusion. Apparently permaban means "time out".
3770  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 02:39:57 PM
Am I the only one that read the title as "In a few moments, I'll be logging out from this account and never use it again"?

+1
3771  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 02:22:07 PM
Lock this shit.

Seconded. Garbage self-important attention-whoring illegal admitted suicide threat thread is garbage.
3772  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 02:04:33 PM
Oh look this thread again.
I have no sympathy for you Atlas after I tried to help you the last time.
Ditto.
3773  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 12:45:54 PM
When it comes down to it we are all brothers and sisters on thios big rock, and we need each other.

Not to take away from your very serious story, but change "suicide" to "rapist pedophile" and I bet we'd see a different opinion from you.

"All he wants to do is touch little boys. Let him touch little boys, it's therapeutic for him."

Or you could block him and force him to find a non-intrusive way to battle. Atlas is not going to kill himself, that has always been a very clear fact to me. He simply thinks too highly of himself to ever do it, like he is somehow meant to lead the world and in the end say "It was nothing" as we all cheer to him in praise (and orgasm in admiration).

Just ignore him, lock this thread, and the next time you see anything by Jon, click "mark as read" and problem is solved (eventually).
3774  Other / Meta / Re: [Request] New "Potential Scammer" Tag on: April 24, 2012, 12:42:44 PM
If someone is a proven scammer, then they should get the scammer tag right away. They can pay back afterward and have the tag removed. I wasn't willing to scammer-tag shakaru immediately because I felt that he was not a scammer (since his contracts were seemingly broken accidentally and he wasn't refusing to pay back the money). I guess you want the "potential scammer" tag to apply to people who have accidentally broken contracts but haven't paid back yet -- this seems too harsh to me, and likely to cause drama when a high-reputation member is accidentally a few days late on a loan payment.
Actually, that drama already exists, and violently so. The tag would give some relief and calm down the opposition and probably keep them from trolling the issue to death. It would also send a clear signal to all parties that people are paying attention, that things are being investigated, but that nothing has been decided just yet-- pacification if you will.

As for Shakaru, last I heard he had been diagnosed with cancer or something and everyone felt sorry for him. Not it turns out he already knew he didn't get cancer but the doctor's were wrong, but he doesn't bother telling the community that. Seems like he's basically riding out his image of being deathly ill to avoid persecution for a string of ridiculously shady business endeavors.

Don't mean to start a lynch mob or anything but-- why does everyone here always have to be so goddamn shady? It's depressing for everyone, not to mention bitcoin as a whole.
3775  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 12:17:32 PM
Imaginary Jon #0185 sez:

You see, now, the evidence that society is focused on death, charity, and creating the delusion that they're generous, but have no interest in a man's labor or ideas - or any values for that matter. I can post four thought-out ideas every few hours, and I will perhaps get two pages of responses with no more content than personal attacks. Nobody cares while I'm alive, because nobody's a true existentialist. They all pose to keep up their delusion that their life matters. The facade only comes up once they realize they need to commit an act of charity, else be ostracized for not following the "morals of society," which are always reactive, not proactive, because nobody actually believes in them. If anyone really gave a shit, they'd take me seriously while I was alive, not force me to live longer in a life they continually shit on. Instead of letting me kill myself, there are those who would prefer to rape and otherwise torture me for all eternity.

Called it. This is the second time he's called wolf as a self-important social experiment. Why you people take him seriously is beyond me. Going back to dreaming of an Atlas-free world. (Or at least Atlas-free forum)

Todd, what ever happened to the Bitcoin ATM? I remember watching a Youtube video on it and thinking "wow! That'd be cool to use!" but then I never heard anything about it. Why did it fail?
3777  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Win a 50Gh 1 week mining contract worth ~230 BTC - 4 days left! on: April 24, 2012, 06:48:27 AM
Thanks to everyone who has played so far!

There have been 55 orders total and nobody has bought the 30 tickets @ 15% discount yet.  Smiley

We are beyond the halfway point. What are you going to do with ~230 BTC?

Donate it to Yoon Yeonghwa for her summer swimsuit photo shoot.

  • I'd like to be the first nominee for "potential scammer" until I print the magazine so that I can start keeping track of how many times I've absolutely baffled people by not being what they think I am. My guess is that by the 100th documented time, people will start realizing how unstoppable I am.
Sorry, but you wouldn't currently even qualify for this. That's how little I want the system changed.

I agree it would be nice if the scammer tags all included a link to how it happened, but I don't know what is technically possible there, so I will have to defer that to theymos.

It doesn't have to be a separate library of functions etc. It could be as simple as an unlisted thread with posts to evidence etc that only the mods can post to but everyone can read, and the person's profile would have a link to that thread to see their "dispute history".

Maged, some points:

  • Thank you for doing this. It has been long overdue.
  • Myself and everyone in the DCAO supports this (so 50+ votes)
  • One small modification is that each "scammer" and "potential scammer" tag should carry with it a record of why they got the tag in the first place. Removing tags doesn't change previous situations. Having someone say "Matthew got this scammer tag a long time ago" doesn't help me, it only hurts me. It might as well never have been removed in the first place. Having a history of why it was removed though, helps people to have a better idea of the character of the person and draw a better conclusion on how they handle situations, what they will likely do in the future, etc.
