501  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Best Mining Setup with Free Electricity and $1500 Budget on: September 13, 2014, 09:26:57 PM
I have free electricity (well, mostly free - it's solar power - so extremely inexpensive most of the time) as well as a $1500 budget.

I'm interested in mining bitcoin or any other crypto currency.  What would be the most profitable way to do this?  I know the difficulty of bitcoin is continuing to rise, so would I be better off mining another type of coin and then converting to btc?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

You should try to sell your solar power instead of using it to for mining. profit is better..

Sadly, this is the most accurate statement in this thread.  Especially if your government offers subsidy for green energy.  I know here in Ontario I was exploring this idea a few years ago, and the gov was offering up to $.70 or $.80/KWh to encourage independents to get into it. Wish I would've got my application in before the rates started dropping, they are now halved.

That would be true if you're in an area where the utilities aren't all monopolies.  In Southern California the PUC has ruled that typical home customers cannot have a net income from energy generation.  If you make 5000KWH but only use 3000KWH during the year you get nothing - apparently it's illegal to compete with the monopolistic energy companies.

In such cases it would be better to run a colocation center or your own little cloud and sell that hash.

Much like miners, I would suggest going as value-driven as possible on PSU's.  I have 5 (and 4 more on the way) of the DPS 800 GB A PSU's, some using gigampz boards (you can also "hotwire" them by soldering a couple wires if you are so inclined to save the $40 for the breakout board).

If you have 240V service, you can get 1000 Watts out of them (vs 850 Watts on 120V), which allows you to run one of the AsicMiner Tubes on each, even clocked to 290 MHz and producing 875-900 GH/s (what I am running right now).  DPS 800 GB A's can be had for $20-25, the gigampz breakout boards are $40, and then some PCI cables gives you a 1000W PSU for about half price. Don't pay more than you have to, the extra few percent of power efficiency will never make up the difference in purchase price (I have read they are equivalent to 80 plus bronze ratings)

The AM tubes are the best value for equipment at this time as Phillip mentioned.  Another alternative if you have enough power to run quite a few of them, are the old Antminer S1's.  Their efficiency isn't great, but they are selling for ~$.25/GH/s. I know here in Canada even at my home with prices around $0.09/Kwh they will still produce a profit for the next few months, and offset some heating bills coming up.   Alternatively,  if power is your limiting factor The Antminer S3's are another good solution with better power/hash efficiency, but cost a bit more per GH/s than the Tubes (they use newer, more efficient 28nm chips)  Anything else on the market is essentially over-priced, under-performing, or more for status or data center hosting than for profitability.

As far as difficulty rising, IMO we have reached/passed the pinnacle in rate of growth from a hardware and network hashrate point of view.  The ASIC chips today are using very near the most current processing technology as in other devices, and the rate of hashing power should not increase proportionately to the cost of newer technology. Not to mention, many of the large farms that have decided to invest in mining have likely most all come online by now.  With the declining exchange it wouldn't make sense for many companies to decide to invest in farms in the near future.

Unlike many others on this board, I think now is a great time to be getting involved with mining.  Equipment is being priced with the expectation to ROI with high estimates of difficulty increases as has been historical, but I just don't see the difficulty increasing at the rate it has for this past year.  Anyone that tells you otherwise is trying to keep a bigger piece of the pie for themselves Smiley

If you are running a small operation of have free cooling via use of fresh ambient air then more efficient GOLD PSUs may not be worth it.  For people mining with small farms in enclosed areas each watt of wasted electricity is another watt they not only need to pay for but also need to dissipate the heat for via AC/fans.  10% more efficiency on a 1200W PSU is 120W - that's 1/3 of an S3 right there.

Hello
1, i want to start with GAWminers.com but after i read some topics i don´t know if GAWminers.com is a scam or not.
2,Is cloud mining at GAWminers.com profitable?
3,If i buy http://gawminers.com/pages/hashlet#choose-my-hashlet for 10$ for how long i will have 10GH/s?

Sorry if i post stupid questions but I´m new.

Pajamac

My friend GAW miners are legit. This is one of the most reputable companies on the cryptocurrency market. You can't go wrong with them. Probability that you will be scammed by them is less than zero.

So what Hazir is saying is that if you do get scammed by GAWminers Hazir will personally refund your loss out of his own pocket  Roll Eyes

Less than zero?  Seriously?

I honestly don't know anything about them but I don't make up stupid statements and talk out of my backside.

I'm going to contact GAW and see if they'll provide me some corporate info.
505  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: can i mine with a regular laptop? on: September 12, 2014, 08:55:32 PM
If the laptop is your only computer do not even think of mining as you'll be out a PC during RMA downtime.

If you're still in the warranty period you can try mining a CPU based coin but you're looking at making somewhere between 1 and 10 cents a day at the most.  May be good for learning about mining an altcoin but definitely not worth the risk considering the minimal rewards.

I like making kids. (Even better is trying to make them without succeeding.)

I've got two. The 2 year old is a nihilist; he destroys everything in sight. The 1 year old is just quietly planning her rampage when she turns 2.

I swear my youngest is trying to kill me.  I often wake up to her covering my face with a pillow and giggling.

The oldest sent me to the ER before - kicked me in the nuts so hard that after 2 days I couldn't walk straight and thought I had a testicular torsion.

But I love 'em.

It's FUD currently but yes if the Sun decides to have a bad moment of indigestion we're basically putting the Earth through a giant MRI and everything would arc and toast.  At the point I don't care about my Bitcoin but rather how many rounds and water bottles I have.

Most of the successful traders are both lucky and disciplined.  You need to be watching at the right time (bots don't work) and you need to have rules set - don't let emotions get in the way.

Coins prices are easily manipulated on an exchange and unless you're doing the manipulation you could get tricked.
510  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what Best Way to Earn btc? on: September 12, 2014, 08:01:39 AM
Work.  Plain and simple.  Get paid in bitcoin or get paid in fiat and buy the bitcoins on an exchange or through localbitcoins.  That is the best way.

Faucets should only be used to test wallets and learn how to send/receive.  They're the equivalent of testing out a bank account by depositing a penny.

Forgot to mention, if you're thinking about giving money to a cloud mining site please make sure it is a company and some dude running a ponzi.  Read this:

512  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Initial Investment for Cloud Mining on: September 12, 2014, 07:56:28 AM
In my opinion currently cloud mining will be a loss because of the estimated difficulty increases.

For $50 you can buy more than 0.1BTC currently.  The best cloud mining site is projected to earn you no more than 0.08BTC unless difficulty stops going up (that's about as likely as you getting only green lights for the rest of your life.

Move the money to an exchange and buy the coins if you truly want to invest.

If you like staring at nice charts while losing money then pick whatever site you like the look of the best.

This is exactly what happens when political correctness gets out of control. I am sure that none of the perpetrators will be punished. On the other hand, the victims will be told that it was all their fault and they are racist. Has there been a single incident in the United States, where black individuals were prosecuted for racism against whites? No. Not even during the murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. (one perpetrator in that incident is due to be released from prison on December 17, 2014).

Racism against whites?  There's no such thing.  That would be like water on fire.  Jumbo shrimp.  Non-hypocritical Al Sharpton.

The day Holder prosecutes those Black Panthers is the day he no longer thinks he's Malcom X

515  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Why Mine ? on: September 12, 2014, 12:51:39 AM
not sure if s1 was priced low.  it was going for $2-3k initially.  hell it was over 3btc when value was 1K.  i agree, s3 has a sleek design, more thought into this miner.  it looks finished, unlike the s1 which looked like a prototype.  BFL did have an awesome design too, i think all their engineering went into aesthetics, the internals were blowing up all over the place, poor soldering, poor components placements (components and metal touch each other).

cloud mining looks to be the natural transition for the small-time miners (such as myself).

I never bought any Bitmain products prior to my S3 and I was so enraged over BFL's handling of the Singles that I decided to sit out of the race.  Several people have reported that their S1s were able to BTC ROI.  Even if they cost $3k back then which would be 3BTC, if they mined 4BTC you still came out ahead.  Very few ASICs actually has positive BTC ROI.
516  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What to do with one full bitcoin? on: September 12, 2014, 12:48:11 AM
you can get started with cloud mining, you can get paid daily and rapid ROI of approximately 2.5 months

Either blatantly telling lies or spouting advice without having any basic understanding of the crypto economy.

He was probably talking about the HYIP in his sig space, and it seems he did believe it was really getting 3% to 4.5% daily return from mining. Wink

Pirate promised 7% return per week and we saw how that went.  I wonder how long a 5% daily return will survive.
517  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Advice for new users regarding CLOUD MINING on: September 11, 2014, 08:05:04 AM
Well CEX/Ghash is killing me with the fees.

I try to buy GHs as soon as ENOUGH btc is availlable to trade, but I go in a negative balance, for a couple of hours, constantly, when they start mining Alt coins, instead of btc. They say, Alt coin mining has no fees, but I still find, btc maintenance fees, are subtracted, after a few hours of Alt coin mining. {So it is slipped in their, anyways}

I threw in a few coins, to test profitability and to gain knowledge on the subject matter. {And to see if ROI can be possible}

The CEX/Ghash "cloud mining" fees, are huge. {Profit margin for miners, are tiny}

I will continue this experiment, in the hope, that the rise in btc price, would equal my investment. {And I guess, that is what every miner are hoping for}

My best bet, would be to sell GHs at a higher price, than what I paid for it.  Sad

Unless you just bought the hashing power that's not going to happen.  Just sell all the hash today.  You can try to time it for the best price in the next 48 hours but if you look at the price for the last 10 months it is obvious it will head to 0.
518  Other / Off-topic / Re: Fulfilling signature campaign post quota on: September 11, 2014, 07:33:54 AM
The point of the signature campaign is to collect some spare change while advertising for Bitcoin based businesses. It's not to be relied on as a source of income.  If you honestly have nothing worthwhile to say they perhaps move to a different area.  There are many sections of the forum that I visit and spend hours reading but don't post a single thing.  Almost 1/2 my posts are in the mining sections since that's what I'm familiar with and I help new miners (or at least I think I do).

If it becomes that forced for you to post perhaps you be better off working a hobby and using that income to buy coins.

The batch 1 S3s got jipped a little with the decreased stats but they were rewarded with 2 consecutive minimal increases (as well as coupons or refunds).  I got a couple days out of my S3 and then saw a 21% bump followed by a 15% bump on my S3 B6.  Antminer didn't drop the price with B3-B6 to keep a linear cost compared to difficulty.
