1121  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: {BFL} Here's a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK at your Monarch! on: July 27, 2014, 06:07:43 AM
I've been watching this trainwreck for a while wondering why you people don't collaborate on chapter 7 proceedings against bfl or take direct legal action. Posting on a forum will get youu nowhere.

my .02

it has all been tried done..;people won in small claims court could not collect so they went to class action suit..someone posted that if they go thru all the steps to a trial it would start in jan of 2016.....FTC/BBB/county attorney/etc ..all in my experience went no place (so far)

so basically BFL is getting away with it....I still expect them to go bankrupt and slip out with their EMC pool and personal assets/miners intact....
the BFL corp will go bankrupt with fines or settle class action...BFL imho is circling the wagons

but yeah no enforcement of regulations in the USA anymore...Gov't just wants to settle for cash...and the company in question does so by being
allowed to admit no wrongdoing (look at us banks all officers got off no one went to jail) and same with class action suit 1/2 will go to law firm
so they imho will settle long before trial....

anyway another corp win 1 people users lose 0... so it goes

Searing

From the angle of someone not involved i have learned a lot on this thread. bcp has been alluding to something that he/she knows you people need to take on bfl before its too late. looks to me like their exit strategy is close

Their exit strategy happened last week back in March 2013 when they kept saying they would have the miners shipping "next week" - not the infamous two weeks.  They continued to get orders even though they kept promising to ship, and then they started a very slow trickle of miners.  I think they were surprised at what they were able to get away with and then went for the Prestige - the Monarch.  Again I am amazed that place has not seen some form of attack considering all the angry mobs.
1122  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Who's still CPU mining? on: July 27, 2014, 06:01:13 AM
So just curious anybody out there still CPU mining protoshares.  Is it still profitable?

While protoshares may individually worth a lot they are damn near impossible to mine unless you have a botnet or some 500 machine farm.  I used my wife's office computers for a month (i5s) and I think 8 of them made less than $4 - about a penny a day per CPU.  A botnet owner could make money with it, but most botnets could find a more lucrative source of income like hired DDoS - botnets and DDoS are both illegal activities BTW.
1123  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: EMC mining a block for 6 days 117,834,421,879 shares biggest ever? on: July 27, 2014, 05:57:23 AM
Is this the most shares anybody's ever seen or have there been larger?

It may be the biggest ever but that is kind of meaningless is the difficulty is expecting to keep increasing for the next year.  It may very well be near 100 billion next year and the solve you noted would be commonplace.  The question is how many times difficulty did it peak.  I think I have seen some blocks that were nearly 11x difficulty before last year back when we were still in the millions.
1124  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: investing in cex.io on: July 27, 2014, 05:17:24 AM
Is that just me, but investing in cloud mining is dead, unless you are hosting and selling those gh/s by yourself ?
Not only you. It is either they charge the price of the GH too high or the maintainence fees too high. There isn't any reason for them to sell GH if they can actually mine themselves and profit.

The bolded part is true, but say they make 5BTC for every 100GHash they own over the reasonable lifetime of their miner.  If they can sell that 100GH/s for 7 or 8BTC then they have a guaranteed profit of 2-3BTC for every 100GH/s.  Then they just need to keep the farms powered to live up to their end of the bargain.  The end user might make a profit is difficulty drops, but the end user has certainly handed their profit over to the cloud mining company when they "overpaid" the extra 2-3BTC.

This is basically why small miners are squeezed out - the can't get the deals the million dollar companies are getting.
1125  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dell : Possible plans to enter mining sector on: July 27, 2014, 05:06:21 AM
The budget for all the ASIC companies that have seen the light of day so far has been in the millions.  I'm sure KNC's total budget for the original Jupiter/Saturn development was less than $50 million.  Large US companies regularly do upgrade contracts with Dell for $50-$100 million.

Where there is $ and even the slightest interest there is a way.  Dell has the financial means to get into the scene.  The question is what would be in it for them and as smoothie noted if they jumped in they would stay hush.
1126  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: btc guild unlucky of late? on: July 27, 2014, 04:55:16 AM
This link is a good comparison of BTC Guild and other pools over the last several months. (Note that they are comparing p2pool NOT p2pool.org)

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=416933.0

That's the point of what I was saying about load balancing.  If you spread the hashrate over multiple pools you can decrease your variance - in that example you would be mining at P2Pool, Eligius and BTC Guild all at once.
1127  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Who's still CPU mining? on: July 27, 2014, 04:51:36 AM

Well some people have access to idled extra rows of cabinets old servers in a noc, free power and hardware equals time to get creative with mining low diff alt coins.

 Grin

This is pretty much the only case for CPU mining.  Finding some random altcoin that everybody has lost interest in and consequently the difficulty has dropped.  Of course at that point the coin is to be considered dead and won't even be listed on an exchange.  Those are dead coins, zombiecoins.  Examples would be Kittehcoin and Lottocoin which are now worth less than a Satoshi each.  You could CPU mine those dead things and hope for a revival if the dev puts time into it - basically gambling.

But if you have that much free time, I would make my own scam coin, premine 80% of it like BCN, and then promote the hell out the scam.  Is it immoral - yes.  Is it what almost all the scammy altcoins are doing - yes.

Some urine.  Gotta keep checking these patients for diabetes until we get some modern technology to check for that.  Oh man this one has a hair...
I'm going to assume this ISN'T a dirty response. Wink It's just not dirty enough to ruin our counter:
Days without a dirty response 161

Sorry I didn't see the dirty counter.  I am a man of science.  Dr. Quinn Medicine woman taught me how to check for diabetes mellitis by tasting the urine for lost glucose.

In an update to m previous taste, I just had some mango & passionfruit juice - same color as the urine just tastes a heck of a lot better  Grin
1129  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to follow up with ebay/paypal CHARGEBACK? on: July 26, 2014, 07:43:30 AM
What Paypal does to you if they can't take back funds from you is send you to collections.  So you should demand Paypal rightfully put a lien on this guys property and send him to collections.  If they refuse to do that you could sue them but good luck with that.  Your only hope would be to use a private eye here on the forums and try to get more info to send him to collections directly - that could be dangerous though.  People will kill you for $10 these days.
1130  Other / Off-topic / Re: Funny: Toddler crashes Jeep, runs home to watch cartoons on: July 26, 2014, 07:40:09 AM
plus most of the world have things called handbreaks which are much more child proof than the americans stick on a wheel. not calling americans lazy but they choose automatics then they can live with it. manual rules

What are you talking about? Is your bigotry blinding you?

Every vehicle with an automatic transmission that I've ever been in requires the key in the ignition and turned to "on" in order to move the gear selector from "park" to anything else, including "neutral".

Vehicles with automatic transmissions also do have "hand" brakes or "emergency" brakes (you don't always engage them with your hand).

So... you are suggesting this toddler got into an automatic transmission Jeep, put the key into the ignition, turned it to on, then moved the gear selector to neutral.

OR

It was a manual transmission Jeep without the emergency brake engaged, and the kid climbed into the vehicle and bumped the gear selector (which is on the floor) placing it into neutral.

It's far easier to put a manual transmission into neutral as you do not need the key.

While most American vehicles do this currently GM and Chrysler/Jeep have been having issues of where the gearbox could change even without a key (it's in their current recalls).  My old 1986 Ford Taurus could shift into gear (auto) without a key in the ignition.

I'm going to guess somebody left it neutral or maybe the engine was running and in park - now that would be scary.
1131  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Everyone of my friends says the same: "How do I get Bitcoins?" on: July 26, 2014, 07:34:01 AM
Here is my suggestion for anyone that wants free bitcoins:

Go out to a street corner and beg for money. Then use the money you receive to buy bitcoins.

That's how you get bitcoins for free. I guarantee that you will get more bitcoins that way than you will get from begging online or by visiting faucets.

Do you pay beggars in Sunnyvale? I doubt it...

I'm pretty sure if your ass is living in Sunnyvale you don't need to be begging in the first place.

Now if somebody in say Burma or Tibet needed Bitcoin begging would be a reasonable approach as compared to faucets  Cheesy
1132  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why so many planes crashing/disappearing recently? on: July 26, 2014, 07:01:09 AM
This crash may not have been pilot error past the point where he got the plane airborne as the crash seems to have occurred more or less right after takeoff.  If the engines sucked in then they would lose thrust and probably have engine failure.  That may explain why the plane seems to have crashes at such a steep angle.

On this episode of cops "The diaper wasn't dirty but this crime scene reeked of of hit and waddle".  Can you imagine the opening to COPS showing this toddler getting cuffed and put in the back of a cop car with a rear facing carseat  Cheesy
1135  Other / Off-topic / Re: Fuck Summer! on: July 26, 2014, 03:57:27 AM
I wonder how many people replying in this thread stating they like summer live in a location where summer could actually be deadly?  Admittedly I love winter but here in Southern California we had 1 day with 97F this past winter.  The coldest it got was 34F overnight low - not even freezing.

About 100 miles from me is Death Valley which has the hottest recorded temps on Earth.

For those who claim they like summer, what kind of summer are you talking about?

Exactly.  These people who say they love summer probably live in winter hell and summer must mean they see 50 or 60F highs.  At least we don't have too much humidity here in SoCal but when we get that Gulf moisture and Santa Anas it can get nasty with 100+ temps and near 100% humidity.  This is only July.  I fear the 110s coming in August/September - this has been the hottest summer ever recorded out west US.
1136  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to follow up with ebay/paypal CHARGEBACK? on: July 26, 2014, 03:49:05 AM
Been there, done that.  Having sold over $50K worth of stuff in the last 20 years I can gladly say I've been eBay free for over 7 years.  For this specific event I can offer no solution other than to see if your local postmaster would suggest opening a mail fraud investigation if you shipped via USPS.  Mail fraud is hard to prosecute but if you are convicted the fines and jailtime are insane.  Contact the buyer and state you will be filiing a complaint of mail fraud with both the post master and the police (police most likely won't file a report unless you receive an item back and got scammed with a brick or something).
1137  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 5th Mass extintion on: July 26, 2014, 03:43:48 AM
That seems unlikely. I think that there has been so much time since the beginning of the universe that allows for life similar to what exists here to appear, that encountering species at close to our technological level is very, very unlikely. I mean, there could be species literally billions of years old around, and chances are they would have little to no interest in contacting us, which might explain why there seems to be no evidence for alien life - no need to assume everyone has taken the route humanity is taking.

I doubt that; since the universe had a beginning, and since all matter has had the same rules placed on it since that beginning, the speed at which planet Earth formed into an ideal place for life to begin is going to be about the same speed as any other planet, meaning those planets, perfect for life as is ours, had creatures evolving at about the same rate and in similar ways considering they've experienced a similar environment as ours, meaning they're roughly in the same spot that we are now: intelligent beings, sentient or otherwise, duking it out for resources, with little time to focus on developing the technology and gathering the resources necessary to travel at lightspeed for decades, if not centuries (not to mention being able to live that long, or to reproduce in-between), just to see more of the same.

The universe is only about 13 billion years old, with our planet having circled the sun about 4 and a half billion years ago (that means about 8-9 billion years are spent just trying to bring order to the chaos.)  Within those 4 1/2 billion years, only the last billion has been spent with multi-cellular life forms, and only the last 200k years spent with your modern day man.  Unless this sentient lifeform managed to find a way to evolve several magnitudes faster than the species of our planet, or those planets formed way faster than all the others, it's safe to say that, while we're not alone, there's little room to precede us in technological advancement, and even if there was, the universe is a huge place and if you have the technology to travel around like that, there's probably something much more interesting locally to that lifeform.  Needless to say, there's no society that can be billions of years old, and no aliens are aware we exist aside from a mutual understanding that the odds of them being the only sentient species in the universe are zilch.

You're missing the potential that an M class planet may have formed around another star perhaps a billion years earlier than our Earth and if that planet developed life it would be a billion years ahead of our planet.

Our planet after all is made from heavy elements that came from the death of other stars and perhaps previous planets that may have held life.  We could all be recycled from ancient civilization that failed to escape their sun's death.
