501  Economy / Economics / Re: How to buy Chinese Yuan with Bitcoin in America? on: July 23, 2012, 12:42:40 AM
The subject says it all.

Do you think the Yuan will appreciate against the Dollar?

As much as the US government would like that and is constantly pushing the CN government to take steps into that direction, such an appreciation would bring huge implications for the world's 2 largest economies. Such as massive inflation in the US and great unemployment in China which could also potentially make it politically unstable.

That's an interesting discussion, do you guys think the US government really wants this and is prepared (or getting prepared for) such an event? And how about the CN government?

What are your bets? Will this event happen, when it will happen and will it be quick or gradual?

I have my eye on the CAD and the CNY. CAD looks pretty stable at the moment.

What the fuck is a TIMEKOIN?
503  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Interested in exchanging BTC for CAD in USA on: July 23, 2012, 12:11:46 AM
How do I go about doing this? I see that I can do it on MtGox but how do I end up getting the real CAD currency in hand or in a bank?

Sometimes a transaction like this is for speculation -- to hold Canadian currency to speculate on the future exchange rate.  If that is the case, then usually the amount being sought is a larger amount.  Other times, this type of trade is related to travel or for gifts -- where one looks to procure CADs now to have for some future event.  In that instance, the amount is generally not a larger amount.

If the purchase amount you are looking for is not a large amount, then what you might do is try to find an individual trader from Canada who will send cash in the mail.

The #bitcoin-cad IRC channel is one such place you might find someone trusted who will do this.

LocalBitcoins.com is another -- simply search for a canadian location, like Toronto  for instance:

Another method is to find someone locally who does USD/CAD exchange.  Some banks might offer this, or there may be an exchange that caters to travelers which does this (e.g., Travelex).  Then simply cash out your bitcoins to USDs and do the trade that way.

You listed "in a bank" as one method of receiving your CADs, rather than exclusively getting physical currency.  This might be because you were taking advantage of arbitrage opportunities that existed where profits of several percentage points were available by simply buying bitcoins with USDs and then turning around and selling them for CADs.  Other times the reverse trade is profitable.   Right now these two markets are efficient meaning there is nearly no profit from arbitrage possible.

For that purpose though, and for other various uses, a bank in the U.S. with a foreign currency savings account might work for you.  HSBC, for instance, offers this which they target for use by expatriates.   There are high minimum balances though (like $25K US).

You said a mouthful.

In this case I may want to trade OTC but that is kinda risky.

I guess it all ask risk and depending on the level of risk depends on the FEES involved too.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a long reply. The information that you replied will NOT go to WASTE.
504  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Looking for better USB drive wallet solution other than Electrum on: July 23, 2012, 12:08:31 AM
According to this URL it is on one of their updates:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33087/apple-java-for-mac-os-x-10.6/

Java 6 was released Dec 2006 so anything relatively modern should have it (or a later version).

So far so good. Now if I could only figure out why my computer is locking up with the usb drive and why some software is not working and I will be good.

USB drive works fine on other computers. Sad

I really need to get around to just biting the bullet and run nothing but linux
506  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 22, 2012, 10:30:59 PM
What are folds going to protect against?  Someone snapping a picture of the bill and redeeming it?  Why, assuming this were to happen, they could easily splice it back together with Photoshop.  It's not as though the information isn't there for an attacker to redeem the bill, he just has to work a little bit to piece it together.

The stitching would require additional work and could not be AUTO DECRYPTED using built in QR software. So accidental spends would be somewhat avoided.

Think of it as a PIN to a debit card. Requires a little WORK to spend the money.

Unless I am completely off track.

Thoughts Mike?

508  Other / Off-topic / Re: Happy Birthday to ME! on: July 22, 2012, 10:27:12 PM
I got ZERO bitcoin donations on my birthday Sad Got ZERO USD too!
Ponzi.

This is interesting! I'll match BTC to BTC for every donation you received to date provided, of course, that ONLY two more people do the same behind me. If I've done the math correctly, by this time next year you'll be in for a big surprise when you re-open up your wallet.

Who wants to play? Simply state you'll match my match and get this a Ponzi thing a rollin'.

~Both Sigs~

This is not a ponzi!

How can I verify my birth date without releasing vital information? Now this would be a cool trick to pull off. Maybe another way of confirming Of Age verification at porn and gambling sites without the need to scan and email photo IDS and credit card numbers.

Thoughts?

PS. Still no donations Sad BUT! Got one kick ass idea brewing because of it! :-D

Hey Mike Casascius! Any ideas?
509  Other / Off-topic / Re: What USB Flash drive do you all use? on: July 22, 2012, 10:23:32 PM
I use a CooKey from LaCie.com.  They are beautiful flash drives.  They are metal, thin, virtually unbreakable, and don't bulk up my keys.  With 32GB, I have all my important software everywhere I go.  I am appalled that most flash drives on the market don't look like this one.  (link: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10462 )

On top of that, I found that the website MemorySuppliers.com has a knock-off of this drive available for bulk purchase.  So I bought 500 of them and have been giving them away as gifts left and right.  Everyone loves them and puts them on their keychain the moment they get them, yet they cost me under $10 each, including the custom engraving.  I made sure I had them engrave the size on it too - 8 GB - as if someone's going to make a flash drive their "one and only", it better be big enough to hold their stuff.

That said, consumer grade flash drives often contain the worst flash memory in existence.  That's part of why they are so cheap.  Avoid using them for anything irreplaceable, or else, save your important stuff in two places.  When they fail, locking up your computer is generally the symptom, and then you're totally screwed.  It's not like you can open the thing and do surgery on it.

With that being said. Are the knockoffs the same quality or do they just look the same?

At $19.99 for 8GB it sounds like a deal considering my 8GB from Sandisk cost me under $10 including the tax. So now I have to replace it and spend double that or just eat the loss and invest in a LaCie Sad

When it involves bitcoin and ANYTHING that needs to be encrypted and stored securely I need something that is reliable.

With the name of SanDisk, I figured I was getting quality too. Sad

Funny thing is. It doesn't lock up at all in one of my computers but always locks up in another. Pisses me off!

This could change the world!

Has anyone tried to set up a mining rig by renting out ILM's render farm for a few hours to see what would happen? :-D

I wonder if South Park Studios is mining for bitcoin between episodes Tongue
512  Other / Off-topic / What USB Flash drive do you all use? on: July 22, 2012, 08:29:34 PM
I currently have been using an 8 dollar SanDisk Cruzer Glide that I bought from Walmart and for some reason when I stick it in under normal operations all programs i have open are unresponcive. When I take it out things are back to normal.

When I have all my applications closed and use the drive, no problems. This is screwed up! My bitcoin wallet is on this drive along with Electrum.

Another funny thing is that Electrum doesn't connect to servers anymore but with the Linux version it does so I have to reboot into linux to make transactions.

yes I know I should do everything in linux. I probably should because 95 percent of my work I do in Virtual Box.

Just wonder what you all use for a USB drive that doesn't get corriupted.

I have been looking around and found this one http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10501

Little pricey for my tastes and it looks kinda bulky. I ware my USB drive on a lanyard along with my Yubikey.

Before you ask, yes I have backups of everything but that is not the point. I need a USB drive that WORKS RIGHT EVERY TIME.

Thoughts?

Here is the concept in action. Just click the center and you will see what happens.

And another based on the Mad Magazine concept.

515  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 22, 2012, 07:36:18 PM
Redemption concept Number 1

I was thinking about this but this would only work if the edges where cut exactly.

You would cut the bill in half. Turn one half 180 degrees and match up with the other side.

Working on a second concept right now that requires folding.
516  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 22, 2012, 07:21:58 PM
Keep in mind that people are going to have to CUT these things OUT off the printed sheet of paper so be careful of what you put twords the edges.
517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dwolla's SSL certificate has been revoked on: July 22, 2012, 07:20:17 PM
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I believe this is The Powers That Be (TPTB) using their influence at Verisign to interfere with bitcoin.

A few months ago, I have had similar problems with Firefox telling me that the certificates were not valid on the Intersango, Mt Gox, and btc-e.com.

Even today, my android phone will not let me use MtGox Mobile app due to some problem with the certificate.

IMO TPTB use certificates authorities and anti-virus software like Norton to implement a casual form of website blacklisting.

This is why we need to develop the DarkNet real freaking quick.

I haven't read the whole thread, so maybe someone else already suggested this: don't be limited to paper only in the designs. Banknotes could also be printed on transparency film.

That way, QR-codes and privkeys can be broken up into grids of small squares and printed twice onto the banknote. One field contains half the squares, the second field the rest. You then need to fold the node so that the two layers create the complete code again. That way, a quick glance at the QR-code or the privkey isn't useful anymore.

Or print on two completely separate sheets. Store one in your safe, the other one somewhere else. You need both of them to redeem the coins then. Or it can be used as some sort of escrow: hand over sheet 1 and after the deal is done sheet 2 too. When the public code is on both, anybody can change the balance, but only when you have both sheets you can redeem it.

Using such plastic would also allow the user to cover the important codes with a paint that is soluble in water. Black paint covering black toner. You have to wipe it off to scan the redeem code for example.
Mad Magazine has those fold pictures. You could do that with a paper wallet. If you want the code to not be easily seen, you could print with invisible, UV, or infrared ink.

Splitting the private key to front and back would increase security but would increase the rate of printing errors (imagine a single sided printer and multiple bills per page...multiple pages in a print job...you're just begging for mistake).

I still think it is worth a shot.

How much Canadian cash do you need?  How close to the border are you?

I live in Texas and I was thinking of buying CAD a little here and there like I am with Bitcoin.
