521  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: An alternate "51% attack" possible? on: December 27, 2012, 02:59:16 AM
Just modifying a single transaction and "mining" a hash that matches the target difficulty will cause all the clients to reject it since the hash doesn't match the previous_hash in the next block.

wouldn't this just cause the client to reject the next block, not the current one? (because it's 'previous_hash' is incorrect)
522  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: laundering Bitcoins on: December 26, 2012, 01:46:26 AM
how about if one provides fake information when creating a mtgox account, then logs in via a proxy, deposits and immediately withdraws bitcoins?

that's called "donating to mt gox"

(i.e. you won't be able to withdraw)

Should I consolidate them at some point and what's the best way to do that?

they will automatically get consolidated once you spend them.

if you want them consolidated in your own wallet (why?), you'll have to spend them to one of your own addresses, and most likely pay a fee.

you guys need to clarify what your limits are.

i just successfully submitted an order for 200,000 BTC where the total came up as $2.8m.

i'm skeptical that if i deposited $2.8m you could gather 200,000 BTC without moving the market.

Our maximum order size is $5,000 AUD per person per day.  We have no mimimum order size. This information is mentioned during the order process, and also on our FAQ page.

okay sure, but not limited by the form processor. thanks for the info.

^ this increases the importance of regularly backing up your wallet; so that the newly-generated change addresses get included in your backups.
527  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitcoinCAPTCHA - Free Bitcoin CATPCHA Tool on: December 24, 2012, 01:47:28 AM
But it is just one of many side project that we develop, when there is nothing else to do. You all know by now, that I hate to sit still.

there are still no bitcoin wallets in existence that cater to 'subscription-based' services, that do an automatic push of funds to merchants  periodically. top-up or auto-expire the subscription, etc. 3-day trial, followed by 30-day rollover... so much potential for customization.

nice captcha thingy though, by the way.

Yes there is, I have just not been very good at promoting it.

https://walletbit.com/docs/subscriptions

well, wow, that one did indeed fly under the radar.

Let me guess, during those types of transition periods you'd be against gov't support?

Now, before you get all high and mighty, I live in Quebec. Have a look at the platform of the most popular up and coming party:

http://www.quebecsolidaire.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/QS-Plateforme-2012-anglais-.pdf

I don't like retarded regulations. I don't like that pretty much half my salary goes up in taxes. But if you think that I can conceive for a second that welfare needs to be pulled wall to wall, just wow.

sorry i was off-topic, talking about minimum-wage laws, not welfare.

My daughter handles job applications for a company. She told me at the last opening there was ($10/hr, 40/week, benefits) there was over 500 applications.

in other words, the true market price of labor in your area is much lower than $10/hr.

probably held artificially high by regulators.

There ain't a girl hot enough for me who's panties I'd buy to smell.

537  Economy / Goods / Re: How much would you pay for the domain: buywithbtc.com ? on: December 19, 2012, 12:42:19 AM
I own the site buywithbtc.com and am just running a kind of experiment with it to see if in the future it would generate significant enough revenue. Although, I bought the name with the intention of selling it. If you guys could please say what you think its worth-what someone who has an idea of what kind of site they would create w/it I would really appreciate it. I can already see the smartass answers so please keep them to a minimum, they're not that funny.

I would not pay anything for it. I'd go register a new name for almost nothing instead of paying you for this one.

amazon.com - rubbish domain name, hugely successful. They never paid for books.com
ebay.com - rubbish domain name, hugely successful. They never paid for auctions.com
google.com - rubbish domain name, hugely successful. They never paid for search.com
Facebook.com - OK domain name, hugely successful. They never paid for friends.com or anything less silly sounding.
Wikipedia.com - Awkward domain name, hugely successful. They never paid for encyclopedia.com
paypal.com - This company owns x.com but doesn't even use it.
sex.com - The center of a huge legal battle for years because it's such a 'cool' name. If it's so cool how come it's not used for anything noticeable right now?

You obviously have no idea how website rankings and seo work.

If you're searching for monster trucks and you go to google.com and type in monster trucks would your first choice be to go to the listed www.monstertrucks.com or bigmanstantruckandshop.com

Or if you go to google and search what can I buy with btc, and you see a domain that's www.coolgadgetstobuy.com and they accept bitcoins, are you going there or a site thats www.buywithbtc.com? Probably buywithbtc.com

i think you should let amazon know they have failed in the SEO department.
538  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [1 BTC bounty] Recursive PHP function [CLOSED] on: December 18, 2012, 12:24:47 PM
closed... figured it out:

Code:
docalc($height, $depth, $target);

function docalc($height, $depth, $target, $arr = array())
{
if (count($arr) == $depth)
{
$total = 0;

foreach ($arr as $element)
{
$total += $element;
}

if ($total == $target)
{
echo implode(' ', $arr) . '<br/>';
}
}
else
{
for ($a = $height; $a > 0; $a--)
{
docalc($a, $depth, $target, array_merge($arr, array($a)));
}
}

}
539  Bitcoin / Project Development / [1 BTC bounty] Recursive PHP function [CLOSED] on: December 18, 2012, 11:35:47 AM
1 BTC going to whoever successfully translates this into a recursive function. i'm almost there but can't quite get the brain to give me the last steps.

it is a function that returns "combinations of the numbers 1 through height that add up to target, where combinations must contain exactly depth elements".

there are no duplicate combinations, and they are sorted in order from highest to lowest, eg. 3 3 1 comes before 3 2 2

Code:
$height = 6;
$depth = 4; //this is currently only represented below by the number of 'for' loops, but should feature as part of the recursive function.
$target = 21;

$results = array();

for ($a[0] = $height; $a[0] > 0; $a[0]--)
{
for ($a[1] = $a[0]; $a[1] > 0; $a[1]--)
{
for ($a[2] = $a[1]; $a[2] > 0; $a[2]--)
{
for ($a[3] = $a[2]; $a[3] > 0; $a[3]--)
{
if ($a[0] + $a[1] + $a[2] + $a[3] == $target)
{
$results[] = array($a[0], $a[1], $a[2], $a[3]);
}
}
}
}
}

example ins/outs:
Code:
$height = 3;
$depth = 4;
$target = 6;

Array
(
    [0] => Array
        (
            [0] => 3
            [1] => 1
            [2] => 1
            [3] => 1
        )

    [1] => Array
        (
            [0] => 2
            [1] => 2
            [2] => 1
            [3] => 1
        )

)

$height = 4;
$depth = 4;
$target = 12;

Array
(
    [0] => Array
        (
            [0] => 4
            [1] => 4
            [2] => 3
            [3] => 1
        )

    [1] => Array
        (
            [0] => 4
            [1] => 4
            [2] => 2
            [3] => 2
        )

    [2] => Array
        (
            [0] => 4
            [1] => 3
            [2] => 3
            [3] => 2
        )

    [3] => Array
        (
            [0] => 3
            [1] => 3
            [2] => 3
            [3] => 3
        )

)

i'll see how this goes, and see if i can work it out myself too, or maybe up the bounty later if it drags out.

cheers.

p.s. unfortunately all attempts to search for combination-calculating code on the web actually return mis-named results for permutations instead.

question: have you ever bought a domain before with the intention of reselling it, and made a profit? (i.e. are you a professional domain trader, or a hobbyist?)
