5721  Other / Meta / Re: Spam from obirum airdrop | 374 accounts to consider nuking. Mods: Nuke'm? on: February 14, 2018, 10:25:42 PM
The problem with manual reporting them is that I need to wait 4 seconds between reports, and I could easily find thousands of insubstantial posts on the altcoin-board.
Deal with one at a time, rather than opening a few in new tabs and then filling in the comment field. Open one in a tab, file the report and then find the next infringement and do the same. I've done this for many months now to avoid the 4 second limit and very rarely run into it since.

I've spoken with mprep in the past about reporting all of the posts in the thread, or reporting one of  them and stating there are many more like it, he said report every single one to make it easier.
5722  Other / Meta / Re: When will WO be enabled again? on: February 14, 2018, 10:09:12 PM
I wouldn't bank on that being available anytime soon. These sort of stats had unnecessary strain on the forum and were presumably targeted when the forum has been DDOSED, and we'll likely only see the most important stats coming back. Can't you just check each profile individually to find out who's online?
5723  Other / Meta / Re: Wasted Merits on: February 14, 2018, 10:05:22 PM
You'll always have users distributing their merit to please other people. Specifically DefaultTrust, campaign managers and bounty managers. They think by giving them merit that they'll see them in a positive light and include them in their business or trust them.

It doesn't work. Something like excluding merit being given in certain sections could prevent this, but believe it or not there's some worthy discussions that go on in the announcement threads. Anyway, these people who are giving bounty managers, campaign managers and DefaultTrust are going to run out of merit sooner rather than later.
5724  Other / Meta / Re: Chances of signature campigns being removed from this forum on: February 14, 2018, 09:59:12 PM
I don't understand how the fact I think signature campaigns are useless as a marketing tool and the fact I'm wearing a signature shows some kind of hypocrisy or inconsistency. I don't have to believe that signature is a good advertisement to wear it. But I have to admit that "useless" is not what I meant to say. I rather think signature campaigns aren't worth money people spend on them. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent to promote dozens ICOs on one particular forum (even the biggest one) - I don't think it's beneficial enough. Personally I know at least two ICOs where devs just don't want to pay for their bounty campaigns (but they probably will have to do that) just because they got almost nothing from them and have to pay a LOT of money.

Nevertheless I try to promote projects I like in the case I'm wrong about all these bounty campaigns so no hypocrisy or inconsistency at all.
They are effective, but not as much as they were a few years ago. The forums become to saturated with adverts that people are simply automatically skipping them in their mind. It happens on websites that you visits and the adverts are there, but you never really read them or take notice. It's one of the reasons why stickies are often ignored in the forums.

A few people claimed a while back that they could live off the referral links that they had in their signatures, but if they were to try that in todays market it likely wouldn't yield the same results.
5725  Other / Meta / Re: Why is the forum a battleground? Is this why Theymos created this forum for? on: February 14, 2018, 09:57:18 PM
The flawed trust system, plus the unregulated presence of scammers, shitposters, and account sales, along with the rift between camps of people sharing differing and often contentious views on all of those things--this is why the forum is a battleground.  And the lack of strong leadership on top of everything.  Ugh, what a mess.
Strong leadership isn't always about banning things out right, and I like the forums approach of trying to find solutions which don't limit legitimate users. Besides, when you have such a diverse amount of people who come to share their opinions about things there's obviously going to be a few clashes here and there.

There's guidelines to keep these sort of arguments and "battles" on topic. The trust system works somewhat in that it prevents a lot of scams from happening. Yes, there's a Default list of people that might not be deserving of that place but, that's why everyones encouraged to make their own trust list rather than blindly trusting DefaultTrust. It's partly the systems fault as well as it's users.
5726  Economy / Speculation / Re: How to spot Whale signs and signs of a coming crash? on: February 13, 2018, 11:10:10 PM
Most whales like to brag about how many coins they have, so you may want to see what they say on Twitter.
This would also bring up a lot of false positives just because a lot of people aren't 100% honest when it comes to their finances and if they do have a lot of coins, then they could be trying to influence the market themselves through their followers causing panic selling/buying.

There's really no definitive way to determine if a whale is going to be dumping is coins or investing.
5727  Other / Meta / Re: ICO/ANN Thread Bumping Multi ID Spammer on: February 13, 2018, 11:04:16 PM
Report all the posts to a moderator they will be handled and do this whenever you see this. It's everywhere in the altcoin section and not enough people are actively reporting this nonsense. Sometimes you'll see in the OP or their websites that they offer bonuses for posting in their thread, in this case report the thread and include in the comment they are offering bonuses to users to post in the thread as this is not allowed per the forum guidelines.
5728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: move wallet.dat from windows to linux on: February 13, 2018, 10:58:03 PM
You should be able to just move it without any issues as long as the backup was made correctly and isn't missing anything, and isn't corrupted. You should check that it works first before moving it over.

It should be fine to just move it into the Linux machine, but I would suggest you keep a backup on a USB or something anyway just to be safe.
5729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Could/should I use a chromebook for wallets on: February 13, 2018, 08:19:01 AM
IIRC you can replace ChromeOS on some models of chromebook with any other OS (usually Linux). I'm not sure I trust Google enough to store Bitcoin on ChromeOS. I might trust it enough to run the ledger chrome app on through, so you could use it to send from a hardware wallet.

I doubt Google would steal any of your Bitcoin, they handle several millions per day. But, they are a concern to someones privacy and if you want privacy when using Bitcoin, and possibly using Tor then that is not possible on a chromebook with the google OS. As mentioned some models can install different distributions of Linux, such as Ubuntu. But, only select models can do this.
5730  Other / Meta / Re: It's time for more "report to moderator" stats! on: February 13, 2018, 12:19:51 AM
That's wishful thinking The Pharmacist. Shitposters will continue shitposting it's what they are best at, but the system does prevent them from progressing and if theymos implements a system to only show merited posts on a topic it might mean those who only want a see the most constructive and relevant points can without shifting through rubbish replies.

It might just be me, but I find reporting posts and contributing that way to be quite therapeutic.
5731  Economy / Reputation / Re: Do you think BiPolarBob is crazy ?? - share with us the help he gave to you on: February 12, 2018, 11:11:13 PM
Most probably it is original BPB who logged in and asked for a loan then disappeared, it suits according to his nature.
This time he logged in after 1+ year, now the question is, will he do the same this time?

Not sure, I saw that a lot of people were looking to give him a loan without even thinking just to get is more than generous repayment. It would be nice if he was a active member here rather than appearing now and then, but I guess that adds to his character more than anything.

I've personally dealt with him in the past and he was extremely nice.
5732  Other / Meta / Re: what is bitcoin signed message on: February 12, 2018, 12:56:31 AM
He never used his bitcoin address here, he only used his MEW address.
They might accept that if he can sign a message with it. It might be worth signing a message with it and sending a message to cyrus/theymos. I believe I've seen hilariousandco say that they accept ETH signatures and as long as MEW follows the same system of signing and verifying they may accept it.
5733  Other / Meta / Re: the anxiety of the beginners because of the merit system on: February 12, 2018, 12:43:37 AM
To prevent spam and account farming, both of these were getting out of hand and many users have been caught trying to create dozens of accounts to enroll in signature campaigns to earn money. Don't worry too much about the system, if you post good quality posts then you'll be rewarded.

Unless the person is very dedicated we should see less farmed accounts.
5734  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk vs other Forums on: February 12, 2018, 12:41:45 AM
This is the most popular forum and therefore you will see a lot of spam. Though, I must say that the moderators do an excellent job on keeping on top of it, but there's simply too much of it going on to deal with them all.

I think it's fairly easy to find out who the most influential members of the forum are, as they are often mentioned.  In theory, if you check the top merited people then you'll likely find some of these people in that list.
5735  Other / Meta / Re: C'mon Moderators clean it up wtf on: February 12, 2018, 12:38:53 AM
I never understood why economics didn't have a dedicated moderator, or politics and society. It seems that boards that are unrelated to Bitcoin directly do not have dedicated moderators. In fact if my memory serves me right the altcoin section didn't have a moderator for awhile either.

I think at the very least a moderator should be dedicated to the economics section as there's a lot going on there and is often related to Bitcoin indirectly.

5736  Other / Meta / Re: what is bitcoin signed message on: February 12, 2018, 12:35:19 AM
You could also sign a message via PGP, but if you don't have any of these then you cannot provide sufficient evidence. I'm sure if you are participating in a Bitcoin forum you would have a Bitcoin address which was posted either publicly or privately via a personal message especially if you've been here for awhile.

No other method is accepted.
5737  Other / New forum software / Re: What is the current status of epochtalk ? on: February 12, 2018, 12:30:27 AM
I read his posts quite often (theymos) and hadn't seen that, OgNasty might be right and he was referring to the current forum. He's likely the only one making changes to the current code. I'll take a look at his posts later on today and see if I can find it as I certainly wasn't aware of it.
5738  Economy / Reputation / Re: Do you think BiPolarBob is crazy ?? - share with us the help he gave to you on: February 12, 2018, 12:27:36 AM
Does this guy come back active on the forum? I heard a lot about him and i wish he is still helping the community.

His account recently resurfaced after a long period of time. But, whether it's actually him remains to be confirmed. He occasionally logs in and requests for a loan and repays it + extra.

I do believe that the one that logged in recently and asked for a loan is the original BPB but, even hasn't logged in since the request.
5739  Other / Meta / Re: It's time for more "report to moderator" stats! on: February 11, 2018, 10:08:56 AM
Hilariousandco handled a lot of the spammers I reported, and I am grateful for that.  It's nice when you suddenly see someone get busted back down to brand new because a mod deleted all of their shitposts.  I've been reporting a lot fewer posts now that we have the merit system--and I feel much less stress these days, too. *Whew*
I'm still reporting the same amount of reports that I was before it was introduced, but the merit system has been effective in a way. It's made the forum overall a better place to browse as there's more users trying to make good posts, though the altcoin section and a few others are still littered with spam.
5740  Other / Meta / Re: Account Ban on: February 11, 2018, 10:02:15 AM
It will tell you if it's a week ban or longer in the message if it just says you are banned then it's permanent. If you include the username here then the staff members can give you the reason why it's banned, or maybe someone from the community if all the messages haven't been removed.

If you don't want to disclose this information publicly send a message to theymos/cyrus.
