581  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-11-02 economicpolicyjournal.com - The European Central Bank on Bitcoins on: November 03, 2012, 01:37:24 AM
I don't think the anonymity is gonna be the winning point... at least not on paper.

I think it will be the security to online transactions and international boundarilessness.

Just my two bits.

It was the potential globality and ability to reach the 'unbanked' which initially excited me and drew me to Bitcoin.

The anonymity/pseudonymity does strike me as an equally important feature though - even though for the bulk of my transactions its not much of a consideration.
That the option is available seems nonetheless important to me - even if only as a hedge against certain emergency situations.
(not necessarily for myself - but for it to be useful under certain regimes)
i.e I don't necessarily see it as the *main* 'drawcard' attracting people to Bitcoin - but it's still a required attribute in terms of global utility.

The European Central Bank on Bitcoins

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2012/11/the-european-central-bank-on-bitcoins.html

I have finally had a chance to read in full the unsigned report by the European Central Bank that I mentioned earlier this week. The report is quite impressive.
...
The anonymity feature  of Bitcoin is the feature that I believe could be the driving feature behind the potential success of Bitcoin. As world governments attempt to get in the middle of more and more private transaction, more and more buyers and sellers will seek anonymity. (I discussed this during my interview with Trace Mayer).

In this controversial 28 minute interview, Trace talks about his book, where QE to Infinity fits in with his views of the macroeconomic situation, if all assets are deflating against Gold, and then he lays out a very extensive argument for why Bitcoin could be safer than Gold and many Austro-Libertarians/Anarcho-Capitalists should strongly consider transacting and buying and holding some Bitcoin.

COINS, CURRENCY,, checks and credit cards — marvels of portable value that have stood the test of time — are eminently replaceable by new technologies
...
Still, we are talking about cards. The good news for banks is that they dominate today’s card business and profit regardless of how transactions take place. But money is becoming more virtual.
...
Banks are making some moves that indicate they don’t want to let the mobility trend get away from them.
...
Meanwhile, there’s another new form of money: virtual cash for Internet transactions. The most prominent brand, Bitcoin, was launched three years ago by an anonymous programmer, and the value of virtual coins on the network exceeds $100 million. Although it fits the digital money definition, Bitcoin has grown virally, outside official banking and regulatory channels, and its core supporters in the fiercely libertarian cypherpunk movement prefer to keep it that way.

I see also they say that 'currently' there are around 6.5 Million Bitcoins in existence... so perhaps this video is actually over a year old?

Not a great intro to Bitcoin IMHO!

Heh, well it doesn't say here's an overview of Bitcoin, it specifically says: "Here's what you should know about the not-so legal side of Bitcoins":
Well the blackboard says "Here's what you should know about Bitcoins" - even though the audio says "Here's what you should know about the not-so legal side of Bitcoins"
It certainly comes across to me that it's intended as some sort of Intro/overview regarding bitcoins.

Buying stolen art?   Has there even been a rumor that this has occurred yet?
I haven't heard of it.

I'm also suspicious of their insinuation that the silk road has relaxed their policy regarding selling harmful products like firearms and stolen credit cards.
Has this policy really been relaxed?

This sounds very unilateral. Poorly done indeed.
I thank bitnumus for the warning. (even if he was a 'nuisance' on IRC)
This doesn't sound like the sort of exchange I would like to use.

Ouch.. according to One Minute MBA - 'What you need to know about Bitcoins'
This video manages to ignore most interesting aspects of Bitcoin and focus on the 'not-so-legal side', in a way that superficially appears to be giving an 'overview' of Bitcoin. Truly awful.

Bitcoins: The Currency of the Darknet
Bitcoins are an online currency with no ties to a government or central bank. Since their inception in 2009, it has become a medium for all kinds of black market activities online. Here’s what you need to know about the not-so-legal side of Bitcoins

One Minute MBA

edit: well, I guess some people will be happy to see Bitcoin described as good for black market purposes - but the problem I have with the video is that it seems to be being used as a more general explanation - and as such, doesn't even tell half the story.
I first found it via http://pulse2.com/2012/11/01/watch-how-bitcoins-work/
where the poster states " I like how the video gives a quick and concise explanation of how Bitcoins work since I do not know much about the currency."
Not a great intro to Bitcoin IMHO!

I ordered from rs-online - and have been waiting over a month.
A friend ordered from element 14, a few weeks after me - got his within 5 days.

Seems to me rs-online are taking money and waiting til they get enough to order in bulk.
Annoyed.

ZeroAccess is also involved in Bitcoin mining for a profit. Bitcoin, a virtual currency, is managed via peer-to-peer networks. Bitcoin miners perform the cryptographic calculations that verify Bitcoin transactions on the network, and they are rewarded in Bitcoin currency that can be converted to real cash. Half of ZeroAccess bots are in the Bitcoin mining pool, Kindsight said.
Sophos estimated that ZeroAccess could be earning as much as $2.7 million annually via Bitcoin mining.

Just another mention of Bitcoin in relation to malware/botnets etc  - but interesting because it puts an estimate on the earnings specific to the botnet's Bitcoin mining activities.
(This figure of $2.7M would seem to imply that it has nearly 10% of the entire mining capacity if we assume an exchange rate of somewhere around $10USD)

Bitcoin Likely to Grow, Poses Benefits and Risks: ECB Report

The ECB cites a decision by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in July 2011 to discontinue accepting donations in bitcoins, citing the currency's legal status. "Bitcoin raises untested legal concerns related to securities law, the Stamp Payments Act, tax evasion, consumer protection and money laundering, among others," Cindy Cohn, the group's legal director, wrote in a blog post that explained the decision.

The ECB report notes that some of the same concerns can arise with cash.

Bitcoin Friday has attracted a number of merchants so far, including — of course — Coinabul, major Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox and BitInstant. There are a number of niche providers: BitPantry, a seller of baked goods, StompRomp, which sells guitars, BitBrew, a coffee and tea merchant. A Berlin restaurant and a photographer are also among the participants.

23 merchants appear to have signed up at this stage, but more are said to come soon.

Tried running 2.9.0 against my icarus boards but it says
"Detected scrypt algorithm"
and then just spits out 'invalid nonce -HW error' messages
This means the pool you have configured is a scrypt pool.

That makes no sense to me. I thought scrypt was something to do with litecoin?
I haven't changed the pool - currently BTC Guild via stratum proxy.

Why do I need to care about scrypt/litecoin and what should I be reading?

At least 25 retailers that accept the virtual tender are planning a sale slated for Nov. 9 that they've dubbed Bitcoin Friday.
...
"I believe this sale will expose how much cheaper it is to transact in Bitcoin than in U.S. dollars," says Jon Holmquist, head of marketing for Coinabul, an online market where customers can exchange bitcoins for sliver and gold. "The end goal is to convince consumers in the U.S. that using Bitcoin can save them money."

2.8.2 was working fine.

The readme mentions --scrypt  option - but I can't seem to find a way to turn it off.

Is it just that the windows binary is compiled for scrypt and I need to compile without it?

A new research and development company created by the group called Liberty Laboratories is being incorporated in Texas and will be responsible for printing, testing and firing the guns. The group plans to start a third company for raising and protecting its private assets.

It’s not hard to see why. An early attempt at fundraising over Indiegogo was blocked until the group raised $20,000 over the online currency network Bitcoin. But the amount raised so far is fairly limited, and Wilson says the move is necessary to raise private capital.

*Australian* news station...  and a crappy one at that.

Clearly these are not sophisticated fakes designed to fool investors. They sound like trinkets - and no doubt weigh nowhere near what an ounce of gold would.

I'm sure it upsets the Perth Mint from a branding perspective and would contravene some copyright laws in Australia which they will somehow try to get enforced via 'harmonization' agreements with China.. but this is a far cry from the serious tungsten-filled gold fraud, and a quality news station would have made the distinction clear.

That said - they possibly have the potential to fool some *really* naive people - probably just the sort who like watching Channel 7 news Tongue

But the project has been in the works for months, and is clearly important to the group. Anonymous believes it to be unique as a disclosure platform, because “It will not be deployed on a static server. TYLER will be P2P encrypted software, in which every function of a disclosure platform will be handled and shared by everyone who downloads and deploys the software. In theory, this makes it sort of like BitCoin or other P2P platforms in that there is virtually no way to attack it or shut it down. It would also obviously be thoroughly decentralized.”
