Of course, convincing the rich to adopt such a system will be difficult, as there is no benefit to them and significant costs.

Difficult to convince the rich??   Try convincing the poor who don't have a regular income.
I recall my absolute fury at bank fees eating up my very small account when I wasn't earning.
It'd floor me if this freicoin gained any traction.

Actually, you have been TAUGHT that deflation is a bad and frigtening thing...

Yes... and perhaps in the case of deflation in an environment where your smallest unit of change can buy more than 1 loaf of bread - it may be a bad thing.
However - the experiment of using a deflationary currency that is also incredibly divisible hasn't really been run.

Bitcoin isn't just deflationary - it's inflationary and highly divisible. I think that makes a huge difference.

When you have a problem with your US Dollar, SOMEONE is responsible.
When you have a problem with your Bitcoin, NO ONE is responsible.
...

Nice try..  but to repair your flawed comparison, it'd need to be something more like:

Quote
When you have a problem with your US Dollar *in cash*, SOMEONE NO ONE is responsible.
When you have a problem with your Bitcoin, NO ONE is responsible.
..and to both of those you could add:
Quote
... unless you choose to utilize(or establish) a trusted intermediary

And that's charitably assuming you're not conflating macro problems with USD/Bitcoin vs an individual's problems with handling the stuff (but it rather seems you are).

Bitcoin can be reasonably considered a protocol or a 'base' upon which layers of protections can be built and optionally used.
Just like the physical cash of the USD offers no direct protection and has a complex centralized electronic infrastructure which does in some circumstances offer merchant and/or consumer protections; if the Bitcoin system needs such protections to move into certain niches, then it seems likely the market will produce offerings on top of it to achieve that.

If you're talking about more macroscopic issues.. well the 'responsibility' is different for sure, but in some ways comparable.
Theoretically - you influence those who direct US Dollar policy through your vote...  and theoretically with bitcoin, the network's users/miners influence the various client/library developers (and thus which is the surviving blockchain) by 'voting with their feet' so to speak.

1031  Other / Off-topic / Re: BitForce SC - release notes on: June 25, 2012, 01:30:05 AM
My solution:

Open up a pre–order list from Monday till mid–july, then close it.

This will give everyone ample time to order

Make an inventory of what has been ordered and start producing exactly that amount

When all the pre–Orders have been produced, pack them and ship them off at the same day in october, be it jalapenos, singles or rigs.

That way everone will receive their products around the same time

+ ... ship non-North-American orders 2 days earlier.

i think he got himself some bitcoin

once you get yourself some bitcoin.... you get yourself some more bitcoin!   Cheesy

lol.. Unfortunately I get from this that his position on Bitcoin is that it's currently an irrelevancy... but hey.. at least he's acknowledging that it's being traded.
1033  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Jim Cramer - 'peso-bitcoin trade' on: June 23, 2012, 01:01:11 AM

Anyone got any insight into what he's talking about? I'm guessing it's basically a joke.. sort of to say he's not really paying attention to either?

Supposedly entering production early next year at the $10-$25 mark. I can't imagine too many people here who wouldn't buy one at that price point...

At that price I'd be picking up about 10.

Thanks for the explanation Krakonos.
I'm still unclear on whether the existing shares I've contributed really will increase in reward over time, or if it's just that in theory my 'luck' will get closer to the pink area in the end.

Well, current shares would not (I think). But future shares would have higher value to compensate. Unfortunately I don't remember the correct math with extra credit, so I can't be sure.

You can see this when we hit more blocks in row, that your reward per share is significantly higher than expected with average luck. That's the pool repaying you extra credit :-).

(The Edit is because my browser decided to post in mid-sentece.)

hmm.. so I have to keep mining with Eligius in order to get back to expected return. I'm not particularly well versed in the mathematics of probability.. but isn't this a bit like the gambler's fallacy?  ie  just because I've tossed a run of 10 tails in a row doesn't mean I'm more likely to get a run of heads.  Does the maths really say It'll come good for me?
