Jace is correct in his assumption and statement. The NSA uses SHA256 hashes in its suite B protocols http://www.nsa.gov/ia/programs/suiteb_cryptography/ that are used for secure communications for other government agencies. It would be a terrible idea for any government agency to transmit information from a protocol that is known to be broken. I am not aware of a good hash collision attack for SHA256 nor any work that introduces a significant flaw in the scheme.

Here is some useful advice. Whenever you see charleshoskinson write anything at all, and I mean ANYTHING, it's going to be about Charles Hoskinson. Unfortunately his persona is unable to function unless it acts as a self-advertising spambot so you're going to see a lot of information about how charleshoskinson is Charles Hoskinson. The subject matter is irrelevant, it is all about how internet recognition adds 3 inches to your thirdleggitry. Could a mod please delete this post? It is both off topic and a personal attack.

How about clipper then? Actually with DES the story is quite telling and pretty much in line with "store for now, crack later" point.
When IBM and NSA negotiated about "backdoor" into DES IBM wanted 64 bit key, NSA wanted 48 bit, in the end they agreed on 56 bit. Reportedly NSA could not break it just yet but fully expected to be able to do so a few years down the road. This is the modus operandi. That was my point, thank you Vlad.

And no one remembered to mention DES? Shame on you for your limited historical scope.

Never disclose what kind of security clearance you have nor the level of your clearance except in an interview. Check Do not list your right-to-work or security clearance on any resume you plan to post in an online database. There are several public entries already released from Galois thus the dragnet already knows. The National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual Never read this book. It's a mess. If anyone is interested: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/522022m.pdf There is actually a job role called a clearence compliance officer who is suppose to be the guru on this stuff. You are correct to embrace the notion that the less information the better. I decided to reveal this information because I'm head of BEP and thus eventually someone would discover it and could assert a conflict of interest. The work of BEP, its agents and its mission are in no way affiliated with the United States Government directly or indirectly.

As one of the few members here with an actual security clearance let me explain what the CIA is going to do. Bitcoin is a relatively new technology and most classified documents will not be released or acknowledged to exist unless one of the follow criterion has been met: - An executive order is received to declassify said documents
- The minimum amount of time required by congress has passed to begin the document sanitization process (redactions of names, certain dates and other pieces of info)
- The entities responsible for the document have made a decision that the contents no longer constitute a national security risk if released
- The documents have been leaked and are now part of a criminal investigation
There are other criterion, but generally speaking if the CIA drafted documents on Bitcoin (which they likely did after Gavin's 2011 visit), then they will not be available for a FOIA release until 2021 at a minimum. Likely, the CIA is going to use Bitcoin for activities with the NCS and joint operations with other agencies abroad thus I really wouldn't expect any document to be released until 2030.

I noticed it when I was listening. Derek has had some audio problems with his software and mic. I may be able to clean it up in the next version. Worst case, I'll buy him a new mic.

Remember they are in beta and Derek worked really hard on them. Any feedback, advice or changes would be greatly appreciated. We have a lot more coming soon.

I'd like to give everyone an update on the core lecture series (CLS). We've received now over 450 emails and comments about the course. The feedback has been tremendously helpful in structuring a redesign of the core lecture series. Thus far here are some major changes: - All the lectures will be reduced in size to roughly 20 minutes each
- More graphics, charts, and pictures will be added
- Each lecture will be accompanied by a vocabulary sheet and a comprehension quiz
- Minor technical errors will be corrected and certain concepts (such as the economics of Bitcoin) will be greatly expanded
- We will go into greater depth about transactions
- There will be a lecture on cryptography added to the core lecture series
- Mining will be discussed in more detail
- An FAQ containing the 15 most common questions narrated by Let's Talk Bitcoin's Adam Levine will be added to the CLS
- A terminology lecture will be added by eMansipater including the new mBitcoin standard
We will build the lectures sequentially and release them here in Bitcointalk as betas. I will offer a 1 bitcoin per lecture bounty for the best suggestion for improvements and changes. Once the core lecture series has been completely rebuilt, we have acquired the ability to release them in Spanish, Italian and Mandarin Chinese. We will also begin heavy advertising of the course to population groups outside of the Bitcoin ecosystem. There are also several new sections being added to the course. We are adding an Alt Coin Boutique with lectures on some upcoming new alt coins as well as feathercoin and litecoin. We have a series on Bitmessage coming alongside one on Open Transaction by Fellow Traveler. Jeff Tucker will be spearheading our economics series for the course. Requests for additional content are always welcome. Feel free to post here or to send me a PM. You can also check out our newly launched website (btcedproject.org). I'd also like to remind everyone that we are fundraising to keep our project alive and vibrant. Our goal is to raise 100 bitcoins in 30 days: http://btcedproject.org/?page_id=200It will help us greatly with the Bitcoin Business Course and the Bitcoin for Computer Scientists Course that are scheduled for launch in late Summer. Thanks everyone
