I'm trying to find a particular post which explained when a IP is logged. I do believe it was when registering, sending a PM or posting on the forum. I believe there's a log kept for every single one of these, but may be deleted over time. (probably not the initial registered recorded IP)

When the server was compromised back in 2015, the hacker had access to users registered IP, and last used IP. Therefore, I think it's safe to assume that the registration IP is always kept in the database. However, peoples IPs change so it isn't that big of a deal.

Although, I doubt that any country would forbid one for signing up to a discussion forum about Bitcoin. Barring your activities on the site it isn't likely going to go against you if all you've done is participated in discussion.

I really think that theymos  has to be more transparent about how user's sensitive informations are dealt with.
It's not like he's waving it around it public though, and only releases information on a person if he believes they are guilty, and the authorities have provided enough reason to do so. (like any server owner)

Plus, at the moment there hasn't been a database leak since you registered so your IP is currently not public as only admins can see it.
Edit:Especially that when registering with a public proxy from tor or a VPN,you have to pay a fee for it.

The unit of evil system is transparent:
Q: Why is my IP banned? What are those units of evil?
A: Your IP might be banned because it was used by a user that got perma banned. Don't worry - IP bans decay over time if there's not too many of them during a small period. If you register using a banned IP, are using TOR, VPNs or well known proxies, you will have to pay a small fee. This is to prevent spammers while allowing legitimate members to post without many restrictions.

That's included in mpreps stickied Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ theymos has also spoken about it before:
When you register, the IP that you used when you submitted the registration form is used to calculate your evilness. The more frequently this IP or its neighbors were banned, the more evil is associated with your account. The amount of evil associated with an IP decays slowly over time, but the amount of evil associated with an account does not. You must pay or be manually whitelisted to enable posting on one of these "banned" accounts.

Here are some stats:

Evil% new users
053
0-135
1-104.4
10-200.80
20-502.2
50-1001.3
100+2.9

Currently each unit of evil requires a payment of 4023 satoshi. You only need to pay something if you have 1 or more, though.
Only dynamic IP changes not the static one.And the dynamic one can forward to the static one so it's not a big deal.
Meh,since now more and more countries are banning Bitcoin/Cryptocurrency , theymos should atleast give some informations on how bitcointalk deals with these kind of requests if they are ever made by the authorities.

If I put an image in a post in this thread, then I can get a list of the IPs of the people who have viewed the thread. Cross refer a few threads, and I can probably isolate your individual IP.
See? That's what I'm talking about. This kind of glitch shoundn't be there.
662  Other / Meta / Re: How Secure is BitcoinTalk? on: May 15, 2018, 06:36:00 PM
Only administrators can see his IP address unless the data is compromised yes. However, there are some "tricks" if someone wants your IP, but if you are targeted and someone really wants your IP, you just need to not make yourself a target...

If you are really concerned with your IP, buy a  VPS, make your own VPN. You need maybe 30 minutes and can find some cheap deal on LowEndBox for $15 per year

I just wanted to bring this topic back as I have some few other questions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem is,even using a VPN right now,it won't be of any help since the forum has probably recorded my residential IP before (When I registered for example)
I really think that theymos  has to be more transparent about how user's sensitive informations are dealt with.

Edit:Especially that when registering with a public proxy from tor or a VPN,you have to pay a fee for it.

670  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How is this even possible? on: March 09, 2018, 06:25:57 PM
Recently,I check coinmarketcap as I always do every morning and at my big surprise there is an unknown coin ranked 3.
Check it out: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/paccoin/
If you see the chart, the price increased in 1 shot and the marketcap also did a big jump that it got ranked third. How is that possible?

675  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: can bitcoin govern the whole world? on: February 19, 2018, 10:30:09 PM
Nowadays bitcoin reach other countries and it is use in some transactions and very helpful in some country's economic.
What you can say?
Can bitcoin govern the world of business market, govern the world of every payments as it is moving to make it the future money.?
It's hard/impossible.As we all know, you don't pay taxes with cryptocurrency.Governments can't survive without people paying taxes.
In short, cryptocurrency can't be widespreaded worldwide unless somehow governments can start collecting taxes through cryptocurrency which would kill the concept of cryptocurrency being decentralized and not centralized.
That's the reason why governments fear Cryptos and are banning it.
676  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoin Is Too Complicated for Average People! on: February 19, 2018, 10:23:55 PM
Well, I think it is indeed too much complicated and harder to use, you have to have knowledge about how it works on internet. You have to make an account, buy bitcoin from different sites ( which takes 5% to 7% Fees) then transfer to exchanges for trading or to use.

How can a normal people, who usually watch youtube video, use fb or other social media, you expect him/her to know all these things? I seen people give up easily, and think it's too techy.

I believe if Bitcoin sell coins on their official website, with lower fees, such as 1% to 2%, and make  a simple wallet for people to use, more & more people would buy and use it.
What is your opinion on it? discuss..

When you use Bank or Online banking, If you have any problem, you can actually go to branch or call the customer service fix the problem, Bitcoin have no phone number, no branch, no one to contact if anything goes wrong.

The desktop wallet are too complicated to use, it has some weird functionality, such as MEW, every time you login, you have to use key chain, or a file as your private key and password, when you get a get it doesn't not show on your account, you actually have to add custom, which is really confusing sometimes. And i always hear people ger hacked, their balanced is gone. which is really scary after all these security in your wallet? strange!

Bitcoin does not have their own official site, so lots of people visit other junk/spam/hacking site, think it is bitcoin site and can get help.

It's really hard to buy bitcoin in certain country, such as Canada. Yes i know you can buy from coin base, but they do not allow more than $100 bitcoin per week, and we are not allowed to sell. Lots of people other thread offered local bitcoin, but when bitcoin price is $6800, they sell it on $7800, That's $1000 extra plus 5% fees of the amount. Why people have to pay that much money extra to buy bitcoin? why don't they have an official site, where you can buy in current price?

Why most of the exchange does not allow you to buy bitcoin with USD? 99% time you have to transfer money to exchange to do trading or to buy alt coin, which is really a headache. So you tell me, all these problem, why would a normal average people, who doesn't have enough time will invest bitcoin or any other coin? This is rea reason i believe we see the market cap in crypto currency under $200 billion. If it was easy to use, for normal people it would have jump to Trillion dollar.
It's true that people struggle to understand Bitcoin especially in poor countries where they don't care too much about technology and what's going on.
I've been in this situation before where my surrounding is having hard time getting interested in it or simply just give up about it.
Without talking about those who don't have access to internet...
But yeah, there must be services user-friendly for new comers.
677  Local / Débutants / Re: Choisir un VPN on: February 19, 2018, 10:12:08 PM
Bonjour,

Bonne chance!
678  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin Dying as a Payment Option? on: February 19, 2018, 10:03:26 PM
six months ago companies were looking to integrate Bitcoin as a payment system,  in the fast-paced cryptocurrency ecosystem, things have changed dramatically.

Now, there is a host of companies either turning away from Bitcoin or doing a full U-turn. Microsoft recently announced that after almost three years it would stop accepting Bitcoin. However, it did reserve that position after taking its own steps to: “ensure lower Bitcoin amounts would be redeemable by customers.”

Steam, the gaming platform, also canceled its use of Bitcoin as a payment system in early December last year. Their reasons resonated with the general consensus, citing high fees and incredible volatility as the main issues.[1]

Do you think bitcoin will back to be used as Payment Option or digital gold will be used as an investment?

Source : https://cointelegraph.com/news/is-bitcoin-dying-as-a-payment-option

It's true that fees and the fact that transactions are really slow makes Bitcoin die as a payment method, that's because Bitcoin infrastructure wasn't ready for the huge wave of people using Bitcoin December 2017 that what caused Bitcoin being slow/unfunctional.
Campanies decision about canceling Bitcoin as a payment method is correct. But no worries,Bitcoin also evolves and they will be solutions to these obstacles.(Fees are already down to 0.22$)
679  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trading Platforms: Are They Safe? on: February 19, 2018, 09:44:45 PM
Trading Platforms: Are They Safe? Huh
A number of trading platforms have technical failures, insufficient security protection, easy hacking, or weak systems that fail to meet their obligations to users. These failures make them an easy prey for hackers, especially for denial of service (DDoS) attacks. This type of hacking aims to temporarily drop the site, by overloading the site's servers with many orders in a limited time.
More secure is to save all your assets from encrypted currencies in local or hardware, not to leave them on a trading platform that controls them. In the event of any piracy on this platform, your assets can not be harmed if you have a personal system.
"A final order on the level of platform security, users should be sure that there is: binary authentication, and ensure that domain domain is stored in their bookmark, to avoid any impersonation attempts."  Huh
Never keep your coins inside an exchange that's a general rule. You don't own the coins when you have them inside the exchange.
And nowadays DDoS attacks are not that effective especially on popular exchanges because these latter use protections against it.
What I actually fear from exchanges is the "KYC-Know your customer" and stuff like this, exchanges are centralised which makes them killing the concept of cryptocurrency
680  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs Ethereum on: February 19, 2018, 09:38:14 PM
I need help as I want to invest in Ethereum.
What is the best investment for me?
Bitcoin or Ethereum?
And why Huh
The best way to go is 50/50 I noticed that the growth of Bitcoin/Ethereum price is proportional so going for both is safer "Never bet on 1 horse"
Also Bitcoin is the king so it's known that it's price will sooner or later blow up.
Ethereum is known for supporting Smart Contracts tokens etc.. which is a growing industry nowadays so it's also a good investment.
Good luck!
