721  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To what extent are Russians capable of storing their riches in Bitcoin? on: March 01, 2022, 12:21:14 PM
Quite capable, but the Russians need to be careful as their government doesn't want them to use Bitcoin. Putin has been wanting them to sell all their mined bitcoin to their central bank, and now more than ever. He even ordered Russian companies to buy rubles (80% of their capital for those handling foreign currencies). You can imagine the panic this has caused, pretty sure its the cause of the sudden bitcoin price surge.
722  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Overclock S9i with OEM Bitman Firmware on: March 01, 2022, 12:16:27 PM
Multi option makes more sense than fixed frequencies. The chips themselves are not the same, and precisely because the manufacturer started mixing them to reduce loses from low yield chips they introduced the "auto" (tuning) firmware.

You can easily have one single chip unable to go past 650MHz holding all the others down. In reality, it tends to be more than one...

Fixed frequency is useful for the opposite, to use low fixed frequencies when you are repairing a hashboard, which is why you can disable the autotuner in Braiins OS+.
723  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Will the real Vnish please step up. on: March 01, 2022, 12:03:40 PM
Of course it does, the whole issue was the bad quality unleaded tin used by Bitmain between the chips and the heatsinks, and replacing the whole of them does the trick. I cannot say if everyone doing the mod is using good tin (with lead), but in principle, resoldering all heatsinks would do the fix. In addition, this mod uses screws against the PCB. So far from the reports i have gotten, they work as good as the S19.

The factory flaw with the S17 family is the unleaded tin that develops something that makes it expand over time and loses adhesion causing chip overheat and silent death, unless its one of the only two chips connected to temp which is hardly ever the case.

Its no coincidence the S19 screws the plates against the pcb as well. Do you know if they still use soldering tin or are they back to thermal glue from chip to plate?
724  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is Putin Threatening or Serious on: February 28, 2022, 10:18:54 PM
I'm like 70/30 on the side that Putin will not do a major invasion. The costs are just too high for Russia. He'll probably do something, but it'll probably be something that won't be clear enough to unify all NATO members. Something like sending only medical units into the Donbas to provide humanitarian aid. I think that this whole thing is most likely to be more of a mind game against NATO than anything.

But I'm far from certain of that. I could also see Putin wanting to really cement his place in Russian history before he dies by trying to achieve a conquest the likes of which the world hasn't seen in a long time. In my very-inexpert opinion, a likely path here would be a false flag attack which makes it look like Ukraine is attacking Belarus, which can then be used as an excuse to engage in a decapitation strike against Kyiv in order to protect Russia's ally.

My heart goes out to all of the innocent people put in danger for the sake of this stupid geopolitical game.

Say theymos, I have the feeling that you underestimated Vladimir Putin...
And interestingly, not only did he unite NATO, its even bringing traditionally neutral countries like the Swiss!
There is a world outrage going on... In some cases, the people are pushing their politicians to act.

Bitcoin is being used for Ukraine, while Putin wanted to ban it in Russia and force miners to sell it all to their central bank. Now the ruble is going the way fiat money always goes.

I guess you were correct in that "conquest before he goes" thing... But look what he has done now. Belarus is actually shooting medium range missiles against Ukraine, and the armed forces are trying to encircle Kyiv. Meanwhile, Putin removed his Chief of the General Staff, was he angry from the current situation? Did they underestimate the Ukranian resistance and thought they would be walking in a park or something?

Unfortunately like you predicted, there is a lot of blood (and fire), even Russian soldiers who were told they were doing a military exercise... Conquest indeed.

Those of you using Braiins OS+ can dedicate a % of your hashrate, simply add a second group! Like this:

  • Go to Configuration > Pools > Pool Groups

  • Add a New Group with any name you wish, i used "Another" in this example

  • Use a Fixed Share Ratio to specify a % as decimals. The rest will go to the first group, no need to change it.

In this example, 12% of the hashrate will be sent to the second group which has the pools you define.
726  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What is the possibility that US will join the war between Russia and Ukraine? on: February 28, 2022, 02:19:46 AM
Putin said he will attack the weapon shipments, if he does it while this is still in one of the NATO countries, article 5 activates.

I suppose he could just focus fire within the Ukraine national border, but then his threat would be pointless. And some of the shipments include flying aircraft.

Now he is adding "nuclear alerts" and conveniently Belarus is no longer a nuclear weapon free country... Belarus in addition to sending troops had fired medium range missiles from their soil into Ukraine, clearly signaling the world that they are a proper vassal ally State to Russia which is exactly the kind of relationship Putin wants with all his neighbors.
727  Other / Politics & Society / Re: First SWIFT, then Bitcoin? on: February 28, 2022, 02:08:36 AM
They cannot ban bitcoin, and bitcoin is already being used to fund the Ukrainian cause, even their gov is directly receiving donations, and others thru different organizations are helping channel efforts using bitcoin. More than 150 BTC has already been donated and even more is on the way.

On the other hand, Putin has been trying to ban bitcoin, and forcing miners to sell it all to the Russian central bank. So he isolated his country by himself. No one beyond them will accept digital or physical rubles, this is even more of a reason centralized State backed altcoins are utter garbage.

730  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS & Braiins OS+ custom ASIC firmware: optimize performance & efficiency on: February 22, 2022, 04:14:23 PM
Which is why you just disable the detection of those fans. The detection works with common fans, but some random brands do that.

Setting a fan to 1% is no reason for the fan to stop talking, but well, at least it didn't go to full RPM like some other random brands do...
731  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Will the real Vnish please step up. on: February 19, 2022, 05:14:55 PM
With the x17 family, plugging a miner runs risk of failure, period. Only people doing immersion seem to be able mitigate this.

The bad soldering issue to the heatsinks is no joke. There is now a popular mod going on where they replace those single heatsinks with large plates screwed to the pcb. This was a design/manufacturing mistake, but they just "quietly" killed this line.

I remember someone in this forum recommending to use them horizontally with the larger heatsinks pointing up, in an attempt to use gravity to mitigate this somewhat. If you didn't know the reason these miners were so cheap compared to the others, this is why.

Used miners most likely have already damaged chips on them, it is a "silent killer", see, the manufacturer didn't bother to connect all the chip temp sensors, just two of them, so when any of the other chips start losing adhesion they start getting overheated without any warnings (maybe errors and chip retuning) until it finally dies, the fw may or may not compensate for this, being serial and "domain" based with the voltage regulated at a single point in the psu (not each hashboard or chip) makes this even more difficult.

But fear not, the manufacturer decided that putting chip sensors was a waste so the x19 no longer has any, yay? Just trust your now 4 pcb temp sensors there Smiley

Rather than more, think of less, in case you still want to gamble it and not do the fix (or hope that somehow your batch was better). A lower hashrate tends to improve efficiency anyway, and you want some longevity, tho if adhesion losing develops in one of your chips (doesn't necessarily needs for the heatsink to fall off right away, it can slowly develop and you would need something like an IR camera to catch it) you won't notice until its too late, and the repair will most likely require replacing that chip.

TL;DR: If you haven't fixed the bad soldering heatsink issue, do it before its too late.
Risk it? Horizontal placement with large heatsinks up, lower the power usage to improve efficiency and longevity.

733  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador has become the first country to make #Bitcoin legal tender! 🇸🇻 on: February 15, 2022, 03:53:09 PM
This is so typical, phishers will never rest.

A "survey" that asks for your pin/password/credentials is no survey, just theft. Unfortunately not everyone is tech savvy enough to discern it.

But this is NOT Bitcoin's or El Salvador fault. In fact it has been ongoing non stop since the beginning.
734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin War on: February 15, 2022, 03:43:44 PM
Not a war, but the pro Bitcoin countries will see increased wealth, such as El Salvador.
If there comes a world crisis, product of the collapse of the USD and other FIATs, this might become more evident. Could it cause some jealously enough to warrant war? I doubt it, but who knows.
735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Russian Ministry wants to legalize Bitcoin mining in specific areas on: February 15, 2022, 03:38:04 PM
It seems that the government wants to make private small farms stay in the shadows, it will be beneficial for the big miners, which are likely to be owned by those close to the government.

Exactly like Venezuela. They imposed rules which were made to ilegalize small miners, of course there is a group of large companies getting all the benefits, no doubt close to the gov. Those two govs are close "friends" after all...

There's no lies there. I repeated things I heard from others about kaboomracks, not from kaboomracks.
So you just repeat lies like a parrot from "others"...

And yet again, you ignore the facts. Your sole purpose here is to seed FUD is it?
Did i not tell you that there are no added fees at all? YOU seem to have reading difficulties.
So, are you going to ignore the facts? Your lie will stand because you say so? Ask THEM who they deal with and don't involve others in your delusions.

What say you?

Yes, and after that, you did work for Bitmain, you must be proud.

Slushpool or braiins has a history of stealing from it's customers  Shocked
Says the fake account made with the sole purpose of promoting GPL infringement. You must be laughing at Kano as usual...

Yeah it’s dogshit firmware.   Fucking thing couldn’t even figure out it had one fan down and sat there tuning for 3 days and cooked 3 more hash boards.   Fancy interface though if you don’t mind feeding it hash boards!
There is Dangerous Temperature, Hot Temperature, and Minimum required fans. Unless you tampered with those or switched temperature control to disabled, this cannot happen. x17 fail on their own when a heatsink loses adhesion due to manufacturing defects (poor quality soldering tin used in the heatsinks), no firmware can save you from that.

As i have said countless times in this thread, Braiins OS can be used straight from the SD card without ever installing it. Read the docs.
It is your sole responsibility to use it, nobody is forcing you to. Installing to NAND is OPTIONAL, again, nobody is forcing you to.

If you installed to NAND, after testing plenty while running from SD, affirming twice your intention but still decide to remove it later, use the bos-toolbox to uninstall. If you messed the NAND by incorrectly trying other sd "recovery" methods, then you have to install Braiins OS from SD again and then use bos-toolbox uninstall.
738  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What does PCB stand for in miner operating temperature range? on: February 05, 2022, 03:03:48 PM
Yes, that's what they published in their specifications for the original S9, for the modern miners like the S19 they lowered the max ambient temp to 35°C.

What you need to do in summer is move that air. 200~250CFM for S9s and 400~500CFM for the others. And when i mean move, it means fresh air from the outside, into the miners, and then to outside again, without mixing. You can (and should) take advantage of the typical wind direction in your place.

I have seen the S9s work with 40°C ambient temp just fine. Hundreds of them.
739  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9J Hashboard not showed up on: February 05, 2022, 02:44:22 PM
The red led in each hashboard is supposed to be on when its working, and off when its not. This led can sometimes fail for various reasons with the hashboard still hashing fine.

The red led in front of the miner can indicate various things, check the logs. If it works don't mind it.
740  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS & Braiins OS+ custom ASIC firmware: optimize performance & efficiency on: February 05, 2022, 02:30:03 PM
The best known current efficiency records (reported by users) using Braiins OS+ are:

With the S9: 12TH @ 70 J/TH (Bas Laurier)
With the S17+: 53TH @ 29 J/TH (Bas Laurier)
With the S19 Pro: 110TH @ 26.6 J/TH (Jeremy)*
All cases measured at the wall.

Efficiency, is what produces more long term profits, not brute speed. Its not just electricity price, it is the environmental managing (noise/heat) and the increase of downtime from stressing more the components.

The reason why an S19 is better than an S17, or an M30S better than a M20S, is that, efficiency. The amount of watts each TH/s needs. And the more machines you have, the more it weights.

Those who go crazy with speed, end losing. If they overclock their S19, making them perform worse than the S17, then anyone could by buying two S17 and making them efficient, produce more TH/s, use less electricity and pay less in machine costs (because 2 S17 cost less than 1 S19).

The excuse that "my electricity is free" is invalid, because even if they may not pay (which by the way would be very dubious, someone pays, always) this isn't going to save them from not being able to make use of the full capacity of the load to the max, or from frequent downtime due to maintenance and repairs.

"Less (power) is more (profit)".

*S19 family support is in early access and is a work in progress, expect further improvements in later versions.
